Yes, he is a hero for running up into that tower, but then he disgraced himself by perpetuating a false version ever since of what happened up there for his own aggrandizement. I don't critricize Martinez one bit for missing every shot....the adrenaline was pumping. But to falsely claim he was hitting Whitman and "got the S.O.B." is pure baloney. Says McCoy "finally" fired his shotgun (as if he had to prompt McCoy to shoot). It doesn't dawn on him that besides the fact that McCoy was the first to actually hit Whitman with gunfire, the fact that McCoy followed Martinez' all 6 missed revolver shots with the fatal blast to Whitman's face probably also saved Martinez' butt, because he now was standing there with an empty revolver after firing 6 shots missed shots and was then helpless, that it would take some amount of time to reload (there were no revolver speedloaders in 1966). Ever thank Houston McCoy for saving your butt, Martinez? Nope.

What an amazing story. The movie "Tower" from 2016 does an excellent job of humanizing the various victims, heroes, and survivors of the incident.
