  • Charles Whitman went on a shooting spree at the University of Texas in 1966 ending up killing a total of 16 people before being shot dead by police. How and why could a young married man commit such atrocious acts? In this video, we go to the location of the shootings as well as Charles' mother's house.

For those of you who are new to my channel, I attempted to make a few videos like this several years before I decided to do crime videos as my main videos. So in other words, this video could have been done a lot better than my newer ones. So keep that in mind but I hope you enjoy.

Charles lived in a nice house, even by today's standards. I watched 👀 the shooting on the late news that very night. I remember the puffs of smokes from the gun shots, I'll never forget it either. The next day I told my brother about this, that I had seen it on TV, but for some reason he didn't believe me. Back then, these types of shootings never happened; this was the first one. I became interested in these types of events then and still am today. How time flies! Nice video 📹 👍

From what I've learned about this case is that he was shooting just below that large clock, from the front, straight down at people. He would kind of go back and forth shooting as he moved left to right. I don't believe he went around to the rear. He stayed mainly in the front. Terrible tragedy. He was very intelligent. He just couldn't overcome his inner demons.

If you ever needed a reason to change those dumb laws in America, the motive for the tragedy was suicide, crazy incidents, couldn't cope with life, although it occurred years ago, this should remind us that there is something wrong with society, terrible sadness for all those affected, some mental issues blamed, don't let these sick people wipe humanity out🌎🌋🏛🧭

Charles Whitman was a former Marine sharpshooter who, in 1966, targeted and killed random civilians at the University of Texas before being stopped by police.Charles Whitman served as a Marine before enrolling in the University of Texas, eventually studying architecture. Suffering from mental illness and acute fits of anger, Whitman killed his mother and wife and on August 1, 1966, went atop a 300-foot tower, targeting people in the vicinity. He ultimately murdered 16 people in total and injured many others before he was killed by police, who stormed the tower.Mass murderer Charles Joseph Whitman was born on June 24, 1941, in Lake Worth, Florida. Taught at an early age to handle guns, Whitman was a good student and Eagle Scout who left home to join the Marines immediately after his eighteenth birthday in 1959. He had grown up with a perfectionist, demanding father who had a violent temper and thus needed an escape. Whitman underwent boot camp in South Carolina, earning a sharpshooter ranking, and served at Cuba's Guantanamo Navy Base for more than a year. Via a special military program, he later entered the University of Texas, where he met his future wife, Kathryn Leissner. (They married in 1962.)After being called back to active service because of poor academic performance, Whitman returned to the Marine Corps in 1963. By mid-decade, he was honorably discharged. Whitman went back to the University of Texas at Austin in the spring of 1965. He originally took up mechanical engineering but later switched to architecture.By 1966, Whitman was suffering from severe headaches and consulted a therapist at the university to discuss concerns he had over his mental health. The doctor recommended Whitman attend another session the following week, but he never returned. In 1966, Whitman's mother finally left his father after suffering years of abuse. She got an apartment in Austin, not far from her son. This move would prove fatal for her. Sometime on the evening of July 31, Whitman went to his mother's home and stabbed and shot her. In a note left with her body, Whitman explained that he was "truly sorry that this was the only way I could see to relieve her sufferings but I think it was best."After killing his mother, Whitman went home. Sometime after his wife went to sleep, he stabbed her to death. He typed a note before her death, stating that he was going to kill her. He said that "I love her dearly. . . . I cannot rationally pinpoint any specific reason for doing this." He thought it might have been his own selfishness or his desire to spare her from facing embarrassment over his actions. On August 1, 1966, Whitman, along with an assortment of weapons and supplies stored in a trunk, entered the University of Texas tower, wearing overalls. He headed up to the observation deck, fatally injuring a receptionist and killing two others along the way. Once he reached the deck, he began shooting at the people below. The rampage lasted less than two hours, with most of the deaths and injuries occurring in the first 15 to 20 minutes.Whitman shot most of his victims near or in the heart. In total, he murdered 14 people and wounded 32 more on the campus before being shot and killed by two police officers, with a wide range of civilians assisting authorities during the crisis. In one of his writings, Whitman stated that he wanted his brain examined after his death to check for signs of physical cause of mental illness. His request was granted in the form of a police autopsy, which showed that he had a brain tumor. But medical experts disagreed over whether it had any influence on Whitman's behavior. With the tower observation deck also becoming the site of several suicides, the school closed the area in the mid-1970s. The deck was reopened in 1999 in a special ceremony.he also killed a unborn child !

A little info for ya hun. He had a chaotic life. He was going to be court martialed in the marines, he couldn’t hold a job and he was a wife beater, just like his father. The attack lasted 1hr and 36min. He killed 17 and wounded 31. He was seeing a psychiatrist and was taking Dexedrine for ADHD, which personally I believe it affected him. He told his psychiatrist he was having violent dreams (day and night) and violent outbursts. The pecan sized tumor found in his brain is believed by forensic investigators to have been pressing on his amygdala, which causes the fight or flight reaction. All things considered, things would have ended badly for him.

I also see many in the comments who don't remember what/who this was, but maybe they'd recognize it from the scene in Full Metal Jacket when R. I know what you mean about a weird feeling being somewhere that you know something like that happened. There's a place here that I pass every time I go in to town and I get some kind of weird feeling about it. From what I understand, back in 1974 or 1975, someone murdered several ppl there on that property....they found bodies in the house as well as in the block building that's on the property. All of that is still there AND someone is living there...That's the story that I can't find anything about on it. When I was doing family research and being a historian, some old timers told me about that. It's really eerie to see it...

I know how you feel. There is a house just north out of town here that several people were murdered at several years back. A man killed his wife, kids, dogs and himself there. I used to work with a guy who actually worked there after the killings, getting it cleaned up and ready to sell. He told me about the bullet holes and blood he seen. People are living there now. Everytime I go past there, I have to look. I always get really weird feeling.

@@toxic44talks35 I finished drywall forl 25 years. From time to time, I worked in houses where the owner had died. Mainly from natural causes. But a few were suicides and one at one house I'll always remember, an older ladies house caught fire and she died from the smoke. The creepiest though, was a house where a guy had died and wasn't found for several days. The house had a real funky smell. And the place on the floor where he died, had a section cut out and a new square of wood was installed there because he had started to rot before he was found. And I've got a good ghost story that happened to me while doing a job if you believe in stuff like that.

Yes, indeed. Unfortunately most people who have severe, mental issues dont know they have those issues. They think everyone else is crazy. The first step would be for them to recognize that they have mental issues and them proceed from there. I have no idea how to even begin to help people like that but I would definitely be willing to learn and try to help them.

I'm so so sorry for all lives loss. Just another senseless massacre. He killed his wife and his own mother along with all those other people that's just plain evil. I hope they're all R.I.P. there had to be something seriously wrong with him like you mentioned the possibility of a tumor maybe but we will never know what set him off like that just sad all around!
