    Hmmm I think you might have left a few points on the table. The age appeal - the introductory nature of the game and the types of threats - could make it harder to enjoy or harder to get to the table outside of a family setting. Language editions could be a thing down the road, tough choice for some backers to go for the English version now or to wait. The luxurious production values can be off-putting for value seekers. Especially pre-painted minis of uncertain quality/low detail which are divisive, with some loving that choice and others pondering how much of a PITA it might be to repaint or to proxy them.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great points here - especially the language editions which someone else brought up recently as well. And yeah, I guess it could all really go south if the pre painted doesn't turn out as well as expected. Really great things to consider - my fervour was too strong to think about them haha

    One of the cool things they've shown in the live Q&A was that the monster miniatures are hidden in an advent calendar type box behind perforated doors. This seems like a much better idea than individual boxes as the box contains a full vacuum formed storage solution for the miniatures afterwards. And just the excitement of opening another numbered door.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Richard, why are you doing this to me?! That DOES seem really cool and keeps with their great storage solution... oh no... I was coming down off the ledge!

    Got recommended here by Quakalope and really glad I was! Always cool to find a new board game channel to follow. Great video and a good effort in dissuading me. It won't work in this case unfortunately (from my wallets perspective at least). Like you, pretty much every mechanic/game concept really sings to me and I can't turn this one down. Hopefully, I have another 30-40 years to finish all these campaigns 😉

      Hahah, it's easy to get them confused though - there was a time I was so unsure which channel I was watching because clearly they were both releasing a batch of content that they tested together. Alex is a standup guy, and thanks for stopping by!

      @@RoomandBoardReviews I think it's because I was just watching them do the Isofarian Guards unboxing together and had them conflated in my head! That's another one I'm excited for. Still a bit of a way off but I can't believe how big a game it's become. Backed it a long while back now, so I may have forgotten, but I don't remember thinking it was going to be such a behemoth. They reckon the box will fill a whole Kallax cube.

    Thanks for doing this! For me, #3 is the most problematic (Time) and it's expensive (but I can justify a bit with the content and miniatures, just a bit). I'm really happy you brought the PC game reason, I often think about that Since a lot of person complains for an 79.99$ Game (i.e. Cyberpunk). And then, you have these games 300$+ CND. But what I love from board games is that quality off-screen time.

    I'll grab a few old card sleeves, put the XP cards in them, and use permanent markers on the sleeves. At the end of the campaign I can toss the old sleeve away or flip it over and use the other side.
    I think there will always be a bit of a discussion over analogue v digital, for me digital is something I can do while alone where as analogue for me is much more of a group experience. All in all, this looks like a fun game to share with friends.

    Reason 1: Not that expensive compared to other hobbies or other game pledges
    Reason 2: I love Xia, I want more... I will definitely give Cody's next game a go
    Reason 3: Yes, I do have too many, they are the type of game I like
    Reason 4: I work on the computer all day, I am looking for reasons not to be on the computer
    Reason 5: I love RPGs and long running multi year campaigns
    I think you just gave 5 reasons to back Arydia

  • @freakgib
    @freakgib 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oke i am going to destroy your Points
    1) The price Wel 165-190 Ex shipping and Vat where applicable is a lot, but if you compare it to other games Like Iss Vanguard or The Witcher
    with Arydia you get everything for 165 and only 1 extra option for an optional expansion
    Most other competitors have a lower starting Box but then the horror starts and you can buy endless upgrades More mini's painted mini's more expansions you name it.
    Some Games go way over 1000+ dollars.
    Here you Pay 190 Dollars ex Shipping and Vat and that's it you have everything there is for the game.
    40+ gameplay Green Legacy so you can reset everything even sell it after that and Painted mini's
    2) The comparison with XIA Wel I have Xia and what I think Cody did use from Xia is the D20 and how to mitigate the Luck factor of the D20 by giving you upgrades in your weapons
    Engines and shields.
    Something has been done in Arydia with the weapons some weapons give the best results when you roll a 20 but still do damage if you roll a 3 or a 10+
    And some weapons have a DEX WIS check so if your DEX is say 3 and you need to roll a 15 to get the best damage you only need a 12.
    And if you do some Role-Playing you can get an additional 3+ points you can use when attacking or for other stuff in the game.
    Then the skills in Xia the Ships have 2 skill cards you can choose from but you can't change it at the start only if you upgrade to a new ship you can select 1 of the new 2 skill and put it next to the one from your first ship.
    Then the Galaxy in Xia is completely Random every time you play the game your Galaxy will look completely different.
    And your trade routes could be useless or very profitable same for the missions that are random.
    In Arydia It is more linear where you start on the World map as far as I know and after your first quest on the starting place you get some options/directions on the World map to explore and from there on you will get more and more options who you can do in different ways so that brings some randomness, also the characters play different wherein XIA the ships look different and some are bigger and have more room for upgrades they all use the same weapons and engines and shield you have 3 versions from each.
    So I think Cody has looked at Xia and did take the good things from Xia and put it may be a bit adjusted in Arydia
    But I think he did also looked at Kingdom Death Monsters where he looked at the Dice you use to determine where you get hit and upgraded it to a better version I think 4 different Dice for different types of Monsters, and he surely has looked at other game design I am sure.
    3) Campain Games you have too many of them and don't get them on the table that often, well for me, the reason I for example don't get Gloomhaven on the table that often is
    it takes a lot of time to put on the table Also it is not truly 100% Solo where you can play with 1 character.
    And the legacy part where you unlock things and sort of destroy them is maybe a point you don't like or hesitate to do.
    Where in Arydia it is been designed to get very quickly on the table.
    Maybe the first time it takes a bit longer because you have to choose a character and a path you want to play
    but next to that everything is put in boxes and the game tells you from what box you have to get cards and stuff kinda as in The 7th Continent ( yes I think he did look at that game also)
    even the monsters are all hidden behind doors so first time playing you don't know how they will look
    And he did put in a quick save option for if you have to stop playing because you use the same table to have your dinner.
    4) Compare it to a Video Game Really?
    Oke if you purely play Solo then Skyrim, The witcher, and lots of other adventure games are cheaper.
    But Boardgames you don't play only Solo you can also play it Co-op and then your options are getting a bit smaller if you compare it to Video games.
    Yes Destiny but with all expansions is more expensive.
    I think for a good Co-op you go in the direction of MMORPG games where you have to pay a monthly subscription.
    So is it really more expensive, they say you have 40+ hours of gameplay and I expect some nice way cheaper expansions in the future Cody told that he had sort of story's for 6-8 different regions for this game so let's see what the future brings us.
    5) You don't like RPG games well then maybe this isn't the game for you, BUT I think Arydia is not a very heavy game the rules are easy the Role Playing part in the game is sort of optional
    And i think the RPG part in the game is also really streamlined and not very complicated.
    So my opinion Take IT :)

    Who are you trying to convince! Clearly not you and certainly not me! 😜
    Seriously, I really like this serie of videos where you try to calm down the FOMO and hype around some crowdfunding campaign. It's really done in a smart way walking the thin line between why people should or shouldn't back it.
    I was trying to convince myself in the Chronicles of Drunagor campaign I didn't need another campaign game with the help of your video. I sadly failed and backed it. 😉
    So for this one, I'm not even trying to resist. The way Cody is leading this campaign is so refreshing with real funding goal and no cheap marketing fomo Strategy. Even if the price is high here in Canada with currency exchange, I'm lucky because I can afford it. And it really looks awesome! If you finally decide to jump in, let us know because it looks like it's not going to be easy for you to stay away from this one! Take care!

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, it really doesn't seem like I'm convincing myself 😂 I feel the pull and I don't mind one bit.
      I'm glad it's landing so well, thanks! Yeah Drunagor was so much easier to resist for me. And in essence that's what it's about, making sure I'm/you're backing because of the excitement the game brings you. Backing it and being pumped about it rather than backing just because others are saying it's good is such an important distinction for me

    • @Nickmc1980
      @Nickmc1980 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RoomandBoardReviews I managed to resist Drunagor too, mainly because, as cool as it looks, I have a lot of those types of games. There really aren't that many world scale, outdoor exploration games with rpg elements. Folklore is the obvious comparison for me, which I also own, but this looks to be leaning into the RP even more. I don't have a RP group so this is the next best thing, as I can play it with my partner and leave it set up.

    Arydia is one of the fewest new kickstarter games that are really worth, not because of components, but because of gameplay. The games feel unique in the way it mixes overwolrd exploration/adventuring with dungeon crawler tactical combat. Nowadays it seems that all other dungeon crawler and adventure games are not really that different from what we already have seen in the past 5 to 10 years, they all do the same thing, but Arydia is an exception.

    Great video, Chris! Love the thoughtfulness of considering the counterpoints realistically. As for the video game point, I don't feel that any video game replicates the kind of experience that you get from a board game like this. The tactile factor and pace of play, I think, are precisely the things that make such beautiful games so amazing to experience in physical form. I love video games, but I adore awesome board games like Arydia will be, in a way that no video game ever quite duplicates. There are the factors of time and getting these massive games to the table that are potential negatives, but damn if all of that isn't 1000% worth it to experience an awesome tabletop game. Games like Gloomhaven and so many others quite literally feel like playing out a video game in slow motion, which is not for everyone, but I personally get much deeper gratification out of this experience. These are all great points, however, none of them are going to stop me from backing this highly anticipated work of art.... Except the money factor lmao

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm with you there, that tactile nature is a huge difference. Plus I wouldn't call many board games a work of art, but I am 100% on board with this description - at least so far with everything we've been presented with.

    I was initially excited about Arydia because of Xia and Cody Miller. I love story and exploration in games. The price is high, but I think it is completely justified. The reason I decided to *not* back is that I'm really not in the market for DnD in a box. Everything in it seems very clever and even better than any of the old Ameri-trash games already in my collection, but if I'm going to get another really big and involved game I can't have any doubts. Arydia is one where I have some doubts and I'm also quite certain that there will be a second Kickstarter for it in a couple years so the FOMO isn't nearly as strong as it could be.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point, it really does feel like there should be that second Kickstarter down the road. Dnd in a box is 100% a great way to describe it. But yeah, normally I do shy away from the high prices and never feel like you're getting the value but I see all the components and stuff and it really does feel like the price is justified, it's just a matter of being able to afford that high entry point.

      @@RoomandBoardReviews I decided against. I don't know whether they add to your list (half-hearted as it was, because clearly you want this game!), but: (1) I don't like the legacy aspect - it seems you can reset it but probably needs careful tracking to do that. (2) I play solo and it looks like it is better with at least one more player to make the best of the RPG Q&A passages. (3) The quality of the components will need to be spot on or all the little things you have to dig out of recesses on the boards are going to look scruffy pretty quickly.
      All that said, hope you land a copy - and like it!

      @@danderson5084 Hahah, it really was pretty halfhearted XD hopefully the other half was half-headed!
      Yeah, that solo aspect I think is such a solid point. This one for sure seems like it will shine with more than 1, for exactly why you said. I think the legacy aspect won't be too bad, my main concern would be the levelling up and crossing out stats on that one card, but someone suggested using a card sleeve instead of needing to laminate which I thought was a great idea. I anticipate someone on BGG will compile a list of what to all put back where at some point, haha.

    I am backing Arydia! Do I have the space for another Gloomhaven sized box? No, not at all. I'm really hoping this will replace Gloomhaven for me. Don't get me wrong, GH is a good game, but the setup is painful that is scares me away.
    Arydia has a lot going for it. The fact that I can customize my own character is a huge bonus to me! Prepainted minins? Yes please! Full color map tiles! Roleplay
    Yeah, this maybe could have been a video game. I do love video game RPG's. In fact there are some out there that Arydia really remind me of. But in order to play those games with my friends, they'd need PC's, and they cost a bit more than the price of this game. So, in a way I can share my love of video game RPG's with my friends! I get to interact with my friends, and I know most of my friends love table top RPGs and we love to RP. So I feel this will be a hit at my table! I hope it is on yours!

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah Gloomhaven is practically unplayable if you don't make some sort of storage system for it. I found the Y.A.S.S. (yet another storage solution) with gloomhaven was pretty decent, and has made that setup time significantly less scary for me, but even doing it on the cheap still cost like 20 bucks for the Plano cases. The app is such a lifesaver too, to not have to set up the monsters.
      Hope it does replace it for you, get that gloomhaven box outta there! Haha

    I've decided to back at $1 for now, mainly because last month was a bit more pricey than I would like. I love the boards, combat, upgrade system, and the campaign has been really simple and open. I still don't like the pre-painted miniatures and will probably just end up subbing out for other miniatures for the player characters. It has promise, but I am a bit concerned I'm approaching fantasy burnout with the amount of games I've got with similar themes. That said, I'll most likely be upping the pledge in the pledge manager at some point.

      Yeah I feel that for sure. I definitely appreciate the painted minis though since I have so many that aren't yet painted it's a bit of a relief.

    @tylerlamb4108 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My main issue with is yes great the minis are in color, but they are low quality... hoping that just the preproduction models and the finished ones will be to par... but if they are being printed in color(3dprinter) then this is likely the best they are gonna look...
    so would you rather have good quality or color ?

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think this is a great point especially if you have the capacity as a painter to make them better. I do think a lot of people will trade the time it takes to paint all the minis for a slightly lower quality though.

    Thank you for the information. I going to pass as well. I like the over all concept and the details, pre-painted mini, storage solution, art and mechanics, etc. However, I have 6 days to decide and it won't be delivered for a year and half. I rather check out the other sci-fi game as that is available now. I only use RP aspect as a way to progress my PC, I really only like the dungeon crawl in fantasy games, and the ship/jaeger/mech vs. ship/jaeger/mech fight in sci-fi games. I.E. I like rollin' dice and killin'/destroyin' enemies. Exploring is okay, but keep that resource gathering to a minimum. And don't even think about using meeples... Sorry, off on a tangent rant...
    Anyway, There are other games that fill my wants in a game. And while I have money to burn on expensive games, I want to see exactly what I'm buying. (I bought Gloomhaven and I absolutely hate the combat system.)
    Bottom line is, I'll wait for it to be available in stores and only consider buying after I see some play-though video.
    Now what was the other game? xayah, zaya?

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Xia: Legends of a Drift System - it came out in 2017 so should be available somewhere (I know in Toronto they have it at Board Game Bliss).
      And for sure, for this price it has to be something you're going to love love love. I'm still on the fence, mainly a space issue for me.

    The problem with realistic funding goals, is that many people hang, and don't back till a project is funded. They feel that their has to be a problem with a campaign because it didn't fund day one. I think Arydia really got the notice out their and explained why that funding goal was realistic. That being said the game didn't really interest me despite being the type of game I would like, and honestly this vid wanted to give me give it a secound look to see if I missed something. Still didn't back it.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, there's such a perception of that. Or even for Kickstarter to promote you or whatever, that day one funded status is so important, it's so much more of an uphill battle if you don't. But I also think people are used to seeing such low funding goals that explaining it outright is for sure the reason that Arydia got so much positive feedback on this - so many people I know have commented that they love the funding goal, even though it's so high.
      And hey, if it doesn't interest you, I think that's a great thing and your wallet will thank you, haha. The whole world and combat system are what's drawing me in a lot, but my main concern is that it'll be too overproduced like someone mentioned in the comments.

  • @cath_paluc701
    @cath_paluc701 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are not helping! :) I am not getting Arydia (keeps repeating to self).
    I am using your #1 & #3 to keep from getting this. At this point, I have too many games, and too many coming. My dining room table is covered while I try to organize the overflow that is already here. Due to that overflow, I would have to put Arydia on credit. Sure, I could 'pay it off', but that would mean something else, like the expenses for my recent move, wouldn't be payed off. I will probably look at getting this in the future, when I have already played the games I have, when shipping isn't such a mess, and if I pay a premium, it will equal out in interest that I haven't payed and investments I can make as my money isn't tied up in Arydia. When you cave and get this, I expect an unboxing and showcase when it comes.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahah, I knowww, there's too much excitement mixed in with the reasons :) But that sounds exactly like the right choice. There's absolutely going to be a chance to get it down the line, especially when people are finished running through it, I'm sure you'll be able to pick up a bunch of them on the second hand market in pristine condition.
      Haha, when I cave I'll absolutely do an unboxing. I enjoy watching unboxings and am happy I have a few ones on the way that I can share when they get here!

    Already backed it, but I enjoy your counterpoint breakdowns. The video gaming point I think is good...but I feel like there aren't too many real coop options in the genre. MMOs IMO have poor repetitive design with slow progression (that relates also to Gloomhaven, but I think Arydia seems more focused). Divinity Original sin is the closest to this style of game which really delivers. I'm waiting on that studios Baulder Gate to be done to play with friends. That said, in this current age of less to do public I truly value in person time more with friends anyways.

    I'm sure it'd be good but it's so overproduced. There's a point where a boardgame should just be a video game. Arydia is very clever with it's wound mechanism and their realism but it isn't just adding to the game it's adding to the upkeep

    • @RoomandBoardReviews

    I am currently backing for 1$, but I sure have a few things that might save me. 1.) No German translation in KS, for a game that would be wonderful to play with me nephews… 2.) The Company handeling of the criticism on that. No direct response, let their fans and superbackers speak and diss demands for a German version. 3.) The Company’s handeling of not translating Xia and even not cooperating to make a Fanbased translation possible 4.) The Cult about Cody (the designer), so many backers wanted his face, somewhere in the Game, as some kind of Easter egg, I don’t understand why I should want this, especially in a phantasy Middle Age World? And him always telling private stories what he did on the weekend with his kids, showing pictures from their latest Trip, I don’t get why this supposed to have my attention? But all in all, iam not sure, if this keeps me from backing. See it this way, would I not buy (if I could afford it) a Tesla, if it had, the Steering Wheel on the right British side, or if a small picture of Elon Musk would be shown in the display? Or if I would have to listen to a podcast where Elon always tells how great his kids are and what they experienced, every first minutes when I turned on the engine. I doubt that.

    • @RoomandBoardReviews
      @RoomandBoardReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that German translation is a big one - especially with what I imagine will be a pretty text heavy game. I didn't hear about people being negative towards the translation though, that's not great. But in fairness to Far Off Games, there are tons and tons of comments, and may not have seen them? I don't know how prevalent they were, but I know even with this small channel I'm starting have a little trouble keeping up with all the comments.
