    With 250 $ after shipping and VAT to europe I'm out unfortunally. Setting does not really draw me in, but pre-painted is cool and there a a lot of innovative ideas. I hope they do well, looks like a great addition to the genre no matter if I get it or not.

    Normally I really enjoy your “should you back it” videos but I found this one even more insightful than usual. I really appreciated the discussion on the unique nature of the game and how that makes it tougher to compare to typical ones, as well as your thoughts on the difference between the preview vids and what those people are saying on social media. Keep up the amazing work and thanks!

    I was going back and forth between this and Drunagor and have decided on Arydia.
    While Drunagor looks great and has good reviews, the fact that the campaign is broken up into so many pieces and expansions and add-ons turned me off. Arydia (so far) seems to have a nice, easy campaign with just a few pledge levels. It makes the agonizing over what add-on's to get (without spending almost $600 USD) a non-factor which I really appreciate.

      @@radip He probably was too shy to go EZ PAY. I took a risk back then with CoD 1.0 and I am glad I did. I do the same now with Arydia, not without getting all in again on CoD.

    • @JeffRimer
      @JeffRimer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was pledged for CoD for a good portion of the campaign. Personally, I just don't really get into those kinds of campaigns that unlock goals and announce expansions over and over. I like to pledge for my game and wait for it to come out, not check back every day for something new.
      I agree that Arydia isn't proven yet, but the history of the designers is very strong which is enough for me.

    You know isofarian guard which is also an open world adventure game was only 80 bucks. Yes this game has pre painted minis and lots of cool cardboard but content to price wise I feel like isofarian guard is the winner. Im getting both but I feel like the days of 100 dollar core pledge will be behind us soon with rising costs and companies upping the production value.

    • @Dodoran
      @Dodoran 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. That was my opinion too. I do not understand why Alex saw that you do not back isofarian guard at a price point that is really cheap compared to other games. I think it was really unfair. He compared the with Trudvang. When I see Trudvang at the moment it is a mess and isofarian guard is so good in the development. The designer are so enthusiastic and the game gets better every month with every update.

    • @agnestoth2023
      @agnestoth2023 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that is one of the thing what hold me back too. They don't feel similar, the emphasis is on different things, especially when it comes to narrative (for me Isofarian Guard is most similar to Dragon Age, especially the gathering, looting, buying, selling, crafting system with customization and the skill tree for the characters, plus the base building) but really one of that is 79 usd, the other is 165 usd, I just can't justify to pay double as much then I did for Isofarian Guard when both seems similarly awesome quality.

    • @CheddahSlammer
      @CheddahSlammer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the price point is accurate based on it having pre-painted minis. If we look a Tanarus Adventures it also had options for pre-painted mini's. You had non-painted pledge at 168$, and the same pledge but painted at 242$. That's 74$ to get your pledge painted. I also want to throw in that this pledge didn't have everything painted just bosses in the pledge. So assuming your correct if this game is worth 80$, and your actually paying 160$, its really the painting that's doubling the price. Throwing in that its all the characters and monsters painted for 80$, while Tanarus Adventures only had bosses painted for 74$, its actually a good deal.

    Thanks for your insight. Dove deep into all the content and discussion available on Arydia late last night and decided to back it. As somebody commented, the very nature (judged by the content available) of the game does seem fairly unique by giving you a near-RPG open world experience in a box.

    Thank you for this video, I actually asked you if you'd be covering it yesterday and you were very quick to respond, which I highly appreciate. This video was exactly what I needed to realize this game wasn't for me. This seems about as close to an RPG video game as you can get in board game form. But with all that's going on, and for the price tag, I think I'd much rather play an actual video game. I think it's tough to get the idea of Arydia across to gamers. It's expensive for sure, but it's not simply a board game, but rather a TTRPG in a box without the need for a DM. If you compare that to some of the D&D adventure kits that have come out for similar prices (with pre painted minis), then I think it's an easier pill to swallow. You still need to be sure that a TTRPG is what your gaming group is looking for.
    A lot of people are comparing this to other miniature heavy projects in the past or currently funding and that's not a fair comparison. Arydia only has 50 miniatures, for one.

    Great vid/info, much thanks. I don't really back games, but recently decided to back ISS Vanguard because it looks to play amazing, and now, I decided to back Arydia because the mechanics and gameplay also looks to be amazing. My only somewhat critical comment from what I've seen (and yes, I realize this is at prototype level), is of the artwork and design. Aside from the card artwork which looks really good, much of the landscape maps looks garish and just not realistically illustrated enough, and all of the player boards have so much white space, it's just not all that pleasing to the eye. I hope they create artwork and design for these elements a little better.

    I wish more games included at least an option for pre-painted miniatures. It is THE barrier to entry for these types of games to me. I suspect it is mainly an issue of price, but if this publisher can consistently include them, why not others? I have ZERO interest in painting miniatures, and ALL miniatures games look ridiculous to me unpainted.

    • @mandorrandom117
      @mandorrandom117 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Prepainted miniatures are very expensive... and it takes a large print run to get the cost down to very expensive. Few backers are interested in paying a lot more for prepainted miniatures so it's not worth it for creators to offer the option.

    • @wrightknight5508
      @wrightknight5508 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mandorrandom117 So many miniatures games have gigantic print runs and generate so much funding, it’s hard to believe that these games couldn’t be produced with pre-painted minis. Marvel United for instance, or any given Awaken Realms game. It’s just silly for people to invest so much additional labor and materials to have minis that end up looking either exactly as they would pre-painted or worse. It’s fine for the people who enjoy it, but I don’t need a hobby for my hobby, and I’m sure the same money would still be there for these campaigns with fully-realized components.

      @mandorrandom117 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wrightknight5508 For Marvel United, a great comparison is the first Arcadia Quest Kickstarter from 2014. Look at the cost of the prepainted miniatures option and how few people chose to get it. CMON was stuck with Warpaint sets in their warehouse, despite trying to sell it at conventions every year, until they closed their warehouse last year.
      Sundrop has is the replacement option. Much more economical and much more popular with backers.

    • @wrightknight5508
      @wrightknight5508 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mandorrandom117 At least the Arcadia Quest campaign tried, back in 2014. If they ended-up producing more than they anticipated demand for, perhaps that is something to learn from and adapt to instead of just eliminating. Set a minimum number of backers for the painted option, raise the funding goal for the campaign to compensate for additional expense (instead of the b.s. funding goals frequently used), or god forbid, maybe actually let a campaign not fund and try again? These are things that crowdfunding is for, instead of a massive pre-order system.
      And I appreciate that sundrop is at least offered as an option by AR, I just believe there are still other avenues available to explore, especially with the continued growth of the hobby. Arydia is an example.

    Thanks for the video Alex. I'm intrigued whether you'll back it yourself. For me it's a no, but that's simply for it being a genre I'm not at all into. I've looked into it simply because I like Xia and was intrigued about what they'd deliver with this.
    My gut feel is it's potentially an even grander experience than Xia and I'd also expect the same high standards of support / engagement from Cody and Ira et al that they've given on Xia. I think this game is best compared to everyhing in the core game experiences such as frosthaven and eclipse (good comparison by the way) in that it seems like a high base cost but the core genuinely is all you need. I think the price is pretty reasonable given the component quality : 50+ prepainted minis, over 20 multi layered boards, 300 map tiles. The expansion provides a very nominal amount of content and seems like a way finanically support a small but dedicated developer rather than necessary purchase. With subsidised shipping it seems pretty reasonable to me

    I am extremely interested in this game. However, I knew I had Arydia and Chronicles of Drunagor and could only afford to back one. I went through them both in details and decided Chronicles of Drunagor was more for me, some because it does have the great reviews. And really, I think either are going to be hard to find besides on crowdfunding so this is really the chance to get it.

    I like Arydia but so tired of the character class tropes (Elf ranger, dwarf brawler, halfling rogue)I realize they are tried and true and familiar to everyone but I wish they switched up a bit. That’s why I was so attracted to Stormsunder. I feel like Stormsunder puts a good spin on the typical trope classes. Other than that, I do like what the game offers.

    In terms of aftermarket value, Arydia is going to sell for a ton, based on how many painted minis you're getting alone. Add into that the hype & pedigree of the Xia designers, I can see this game selling for $250-$300 CAD.

      @@dextersamson8286 I believe it, and I'm not knocking the designer or the game, I'm just curious about the $720,000 goal. I just have trouble believing it's all manufacturing costs. If they're including salaries and sunk costs, that's fine, I'm just curious. If the game ACTUALLY costed $720,000 to make, they would be insane to do it. That's just way too much in manufacturing costs. But I'm sure there's lots of other costs built in there

    • @stevekozlowski5963
      @stevekozlowski5963 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TrueflightsI'm actually fairly familiar with manufacturing costs, we are developing our first project as we speak. Each mold can indeed cost up to $10k, but each mold can also hold around six miniatures, probably more for small minis like this game seems to have. So that would be around $60k for molds, roughly. Obviously they have interchangeable heads and are pre-painted, so I have no idea how much that inflates the cost because we didn't explore those options.
      Again, I'm not knocking the creator or the game, I'm just curious what all was included in that funding goal. Currently this game is over $600k. There's are many, many games that have tons of miniatures and components that never hit $600k in their entire campaign and still got made.
      Again, I'm not criticizing the game or the company at all, I'm just curious from a fellow developer angle what all they put into that goal. I'm sure the shipping subsidy they're offering is part of it

    • @Joshua_Tymchyn
      @Joshua_Tymchyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say a game like Bardsung is more of a dungeon crawler with nearly 99% combat encounters. It looks like Arydia is D&D in a box and will have more than simple enemy encounters. There will be exploring, roleplaying, etc. as well. We should compare it to the D&D adventure kits that average around $150.

I've spent the past 2 years saying nothing but nice things about him, despite his general attacking of everyone and everything in the industry, and then despite that, despite me trying to actively convince my audience he's not that bad....he goes ahead and puts out a video trying to call me out. As well as other good people in this industry while intentionally showing a worse picture. I will try to be nice to a lot of people, but don't treat me like a target and expect me to treat you as a friend.
      Keep in mind, this is after knowing full well that in his discord he's said plenty of things about me behind my back....but I was willing to ignore it as long as it was done "in private".
      Edit: adding an edit to say that I genuinely like his content, and I wish him all the best, but you can't take potshots at every single person in the industry and then be surprised when you have a certain reputation.
