In all due respect, Super Mario Kart on the SNES is more similar to Mario Kart Super Circuit on the GBA. They have similar graphical limitations which required the Mode 7 technology for that racing feel to stay in effect. Everything else from N64 and GameCube lives on in later versions of Mario Kart.

So many memories tied to “Time Trials” & “Battle Mode” & our small neighborhood sharing ONE Cart between like 2-3 different houses.
You have to give Nintendo credit for their system naming convention and marketing during the Super NES and N64 eras. All you had to do was add "Super" or "64" to the name to tell what system it is to an existing franchise. There was one fatality though: SNK/Neo Geo. A lot of people got confused with Samurai Shodown 64.
Great video, and Mario Kart 64 was such a wonderful game. But - objectively speaking - there's no way to say it's the best Mario Kart game without some serious nostalgia glasses on. It's always amusing to think about how Mario Kart 64 is the title I have the least memories of growing up. The original was ingrained in my brain due to a mix of Nintendo Power and a neighbor who would get practically every notable title on the SNES when they came out. When it came to 64 I had already moved onto Playstation (had to follow my RPG obsession) but would play occasionally at parties and the like. The future titles however, Double Dash on, I would play a ton of with friends and family. I think the last time I played Mario Kart 64 was about a decade ago after a night of bar hopping, crashed with a group of people at someone's house and it devolved into a night of playing N64 titles. This was yet another great look at an incredibly influential game! My first day of vacation and this very much hit the spot.
It’s strange to me too because no doubt the PlayStation migration is something we all remember but MK is the one game that moved a lot of 64s. Imagine the world without it?!
This could be your best video yet - I absolutely adore MK64. Got the Japanese version with 2 tone black/grey controller on day 1 just before Christmas ‘96. Quite possibly the best Christmas ever, having played through SM64, Pilotwings 64 and Wave Race 64 just before. What a year that was for gaming…. Are you planning a similar video for the development of SM64?

Fun look back on Mario Kart 64. I don't remember the L button turning off the music, that's pretty cool! One thing I'll add is that DK was originally going to be replaced with Kamek the magikoopa. There is an old Nintendo Power screenshot with him in the roster. I was so disappointed that they cut Kamek out, I skipped the game on launch day lol
I never owned the original Mario Kart, but I did play it when I rented the SNES when I had to stay home...but Mario 64 was amazing for its timed boost starts and like the things you talked about here. It was amazing to see at that time.
I think it's time for Nintendo Kart. 8 deluxe feels like a goodbye to fans and will be very hard to top. Saying that I will always play 64 before anything else.
I first played Mario Kart 64 in a hospital while I was recovering from surgery. I was 6 or 7 at the time, and while Super Mario 64 felt confusing and directionless (I eventually learned to love it on the DS), Mario Kart was pretty good, you know, for a Mario game. I was a Sonic fan, what can I say? The first Mario Kart I owned myself was Super Circuit for the GBA, which in my opinion is a wonderful evolution of the original Super Mario Kart, bringing in a few touches from 64 where it can (the cast, the items, and having all the courses be unique). It even has all the courses from the SNES game included! I picked up 64 for myself when it came out on the Wii Virtual Console, and it's still a blast to play even today.
So i saw your thingy about Spiderman, and gawd damn i had to stop listening bc i was so awe struck in both astonishment and laughter by how INSANE the new story for spidermans origins were. I feel like there was some time era when Japan was so obssessed with aliens, and beings from other planets in their media. I didnt mind the twisty spin on spiderman, and found it refreshing really bc it was just something new and original, at least it seemed that way to me, when we live in an era, where stories and originality have never been so lacking. I honestly enjoy these Japanese perspectives on American comics, like for example, i recently discovered there is a Hulk manga, where instead of gamma radiation, it goes the more serious route, similar to Godzilla with Bruce Banner being transformed via a nuclear bomb. I look forward to more of your stuff ! 😄👍
My nostalgia is for SMK, but my favorites are MKDS (multiplayer) & MKDD (single-player). Still, MK64 is the most iconic iteration, it's what comes to mind when I hear "Mario Kart".
24:32 I remember seeing articles about Mario Kart R in Nintendo Power, and wondering why it was called R. I do prefer it being renamed Mario Kart 64. Speaking of Nintendo Power, I also remember a contest where if you could beat certain times on certain tracks, you could win a gold N64 controller. I tried so hard, but I just couldn't, beat the qualifying times.
A lot can be forgiven about Mario Kart SNES being the first outing, establishing the brand and concept and the basics. Though there is no doubt, Mario Kart 64 was an improvement on every level. It's just a more playable and accessible game, and the computer controlled characters aren't complete cheating bastards like in the SNES version. It's just a more fun game overall. And of course, Wario's there. You can't beat that.
i was with you until i sensed the biased... the cpu in mk64 was more cheap. lol be real about it! constant rubberband always behind you. unless you cheat back with shortcuts. in og snes mario kart you had the skill and you can get ahead and keep a good distance from the cpu racers.
Starfox 64, F Zero X, Pilot Wings 64, and of course Mario Kart 64 all are vastly surperior to their Super Nintendo originals and have aged so much better...Mario Kart Super Circuit is a much better redux of the original game.
Man i love the sound of a Japanese man excitedly speaking Japanese haha Thoroughly enjoyed the n64, its only failure is the joystick. Everyone had a worn out controller.
I don't really agree with all your nitpicks of the snes game. Coins are still used as speed cap increases. I think the game plays fine. I played a ton of f zero so maybe it's that but I really didn't have any issues with the game.
I liked F Zero a lot. It’s funny nobody is criticizing that I said pilot wings “wasn’t really a game” 🤣 I guess you don’t know what chord you strike until you try.
My only wish for Mariokart games is to be able to choose the number of laps (up to maybe 20) and have the option to turn rubberbanding on or off. Ive always hated being stuck with only 3 laps with mandatory rubberbanding.
Sometimes the jump from one stage of concept to the next version is so large it gets difficult to go back. That certainly is the case for Mario Kart 64 as it eclipses the SNES original on every level. Another example of this is Super Smash Bros. While the N64 original was great and so much fun back in the day. When Melee came outon the Gamecube it made going back to the original difficult. I also like how point out the coins. I never liked the concept of coins to increase speed. It's already bad that you got hit by something and stopped dead in your tracks but now you also lost coins which makes getting up to topspeed difficult again. I was excited when I saw the announcement for Mario Kart Wii but when I saw the coins I skipped it. To me personal the best Mario Kart is DS. If I have to mention a home console version it would be double dash on the gamecube. But DS is pretty much perfect if you ask me.
Honestly, almost all the things you’re complaining about in Super Mario Kart are what I love about it. One of my favorite things about SMK was the fact the map and all the racers were on the bottom screen.
Played all the Mario Karts ever since the SNES original and sure had tons of fun with all of them. I honestly think that Mario Kart Wii and 8 Deluxe are the definitive entries in the series, however what you said during the video about improvements made with MK64 holds true. That splitscreen map annoyed me even as a kid, especially since F-ZERO utilities the whole screen and has a map too. And Super Mario Kart's A.I. cheated brutally. Mario Kart 64 got rid of those issues and despite having its own share of problems (4P mode ran at half the frame rate and had no music for instance), the courses and battle mode were just so much more fun. Sure SMK couldn't do much beyond what was possible at the time with the Super Famicom and mode7 feels slippery especially these days when coming from newer games, but it was nonetheless a fun milestone for what's to come and that was basically two continuations of the SNES (PS1 and N64) and SEGA pushing for low priced arcade experiences at home (Saturn). Overall, the 90's were a crazy fun ride for videogames, going from 16bit to 128 in just 10 years.
What I mean to say is there are many games where the series didn’t take shape until the second game. I don’t get why people don’t see that but that’s fine.
This game is just endlessly appealing. It's not the first game I played technically but the first I ever got into. Nintendo at that point was still putting out these simple, fun games you can play over and over with no conclusion during a time games were starting to become more like movies -- just because their gameplay paradigms are so amusing and satisfying. None of the other MK games come close. The only reason I would buy the latest MK is because I was hoping it'd be like 64 in some way. I miss it, want this approach to return -- and I want the blue shells, coins and superficial gimmicks to burn in hell.
On one hand I never played Yoshi's Story, so I don't know about its quality. On the other hand, I get burned out going for 100 points in every level in Yoshi's Island, even though it feels like that's how you're supposed to play it. In spite of that, it does feel like a classic game.
It’s just that a lot of 16 bit games at the end were impressive but not even 3 years later were out of date. These games all changed the format just a little bit too. But I’ll fire up YI this weekend to see if I’m wrong 😑
@@GTV-Japan I don't think there's such a thing as a perfect game, but YI is top 5 easy for me for snes. I just have never heard of anyone liking yoshis story better. It's just so unconventional. But I'll fire up the ol 64 and give it another run. Maybe read a guide this time.
13:09 - 13:17 😆😆😆 I agree! WHO WOULD? This is coming from someone who Recorded Videogame Themes as A Capellas for Years but the Option is there if you want it!
@@GTV-Japan I dont know. Germany were back then against violence against humans in videogames. For example: they switched the marines for robots in half life. But in a "cartoonish" game like mario kart...?
I bought the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe add on pack sight unseen assuming they'd re-do more N64 tracks. sadly that didn't happen. and its version of N64 Rainbow Road was fun but waaaay too short. Should have been 3 laps. Didn't like how they insisted on having almost all the tracks being roughly the same length.
I actually prefer super mario kart :P It has more focus on the driving and skills at cornering rather than weapons focus that later mario karts focus on. Much different tone and atmosphere in it that I prefer and have more fun with.
20:31 funfact, Luigi's japanese voice is done by Julien Bardakoff, the french translator of Ocarina of Time and Pokémon

Hey! Thanks for sticking around!! The next video which is already cut is hopefully going to be a good one too. See ya then
@@GTV-Japan😄
My nostalgia is for SMK, but my favorites are MKDS (multiplayer) & MKDD (single-player). Still, MK64 is the most iconic iteration, it's what comes to mind when I hear "Mario Kart".
I like double dash too maybe that’s next up someday
24:32 I remember seeing articles about Mario Kart R in Nintendo Power, and wondering why it was called R. I do prefer it being renamed Mario Kart 64.
Speaking of Nintendo Power, I also remember a contest where if you could beat certain times on certain tracks, you could win a gold N64 controller. I tried so hard, but I just couldn't, beat the qualifying times.
That’s cool! I think R means rendered. I think the gold controller was sold with goldeneye later
You can't beat that.
i was with you until i sensed the biased... the cpu in mk64 was more cheap. lol be real about it!
constant rubberband always behind you. unless you cheat back with shortcuts.
in og snes mario kart you had the skill and you can get ahead and keep
a good distance from the cpu racers.
The best game❤
Starfox 64, F Zero X, Pilot Wings 64, and of course Mario Kart 64 all are vastly surperior to their Super Nintendo originals and have aged so much better...Mario Kart Super Circuit is a much better redux of the original game.
Bro left out the most nostalgic part. "Velcome to Marioo kart!....sElect your player!"
But I told ya! It’s a bunch of kids screaming Maaaaaaariiioooooo kaaaaaaaa-toooooooo
Easily the 2nd best mascot kart racer sipnoff of a Nntendo franchise on the N64.
“Timeless N64 Classic”
But GameSpot disagrees. They gave that game a 6.5/10!
GameSpot 9 times out of 10 can’t review a video game to save their lives!
Well, lemme just go kill myself then, because Gamepots has totally owned me here!
@@GTV-Japan don’t do that! You’re more creditable than they ever hoped, and you have so much to live for!
@Gecko1993HogheadIncOfficial yeah! I must live long enough to be the last channel standing!
@@GTV-Japan that’s the spirit! And to quote a certain fisherman, “it is why you should believe in achieving your goal! NEVER GIVE UP!”
I always liked the pre-rendered graphics. They look more artistic than polygons.
Yeah especially in the early days. I liked how they kind of looked like toys in this and other games
@@GTV-Japanagreed!
Man i love the sound of a Japanese man excitedly speaking Japanese haha
Thoroughly enjoyed the n64, its only failure is the joystick.
Thanks for sharing and honest and well thought out perspective!!
Honestly, almost all the things you’re complaining about in Super Mario Kart are what I love about it.
One of my favorite things about SMK was the fact the map and all the racers were on the bottom screen.
That’s fine! But certainly in the next gen that was out of date! If you liked it, sorry it never came back. 🍺
I liked the novelty of it in SMK. Didn’t complain it wasn’t in MK64.
I think Double Dash on GameCube was/is the best Mario Kart, but they are all great!
wooooooah dude i was with you all the way until you mentioned yoshi's story being better than island? cant agree -- but fantastic work as always!
What I mean to say is there are many games where the series didn’t take shape until the second game. I don’t get why people don’t see that but that’s fine.
Love your work. Take the subscribe!
Thank you 🍺
One sec... This mah jam.
Oh block fort! We do love you!!!!!!!!!!
Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, San Francisco RUSH.
And Cruuuuusiiiaaannnnnn Cruisin USA!!! Yeah!!!!!!👍
Mario Kart DS gotta be next.
That yoshis story line is a hot take
On one hand I never played Yoshi's Story, so I don't know about its quality. On the other hand, I get burned out going for 100 points in every level in Yoshi's Island, even though it feels like that's how you're supposed to play it. In spite of that, it does feel like a classic game.
@@GTV-Japan unsubscribed lol
@@lhfirex I've gone for the 100% and had a bad time. Just give it an any % playthrough and you'll have a great time
It’s just that a lot of 16 bit games at the end were impressive but not even 3 years later were out of date.
Exactly! This ain’t an Atari game!!
I loved double dash! GameCube had so many good games!
So I’ve heard. I might have to try one out and see why it’s so popular 💿
Dude Mario Kart super circuit for the game boy advance was the first Mario Kart game to feature retro tracks
In Germany at the end ceremony the 4th place isn't chased by a bomb, instead you see him standing alone in the background
Wow! Why? Is it too violent for kids or something?
@@GTV-Japan I dont know. Germany were back then against violence against humans in videogames. For example: they switched the marines for robots in half life. But in a "cartoonish" game like mario kart...?
@flaviapunktexe6924 I also heard pro wrestling was heavily censored 🤬 unfortunately
Very nice video!
Just one note. Mario Kart is the second best selling N64 game.
Goldeneye is the third.
Yesss butttt if you include the goldeneye bundle then the order is reversed! Basically tied. Thanks for watching!! 🚗 ⚡️
Australia had the wackiest N64 TV ads! 😂😂😂
Koopa Troopa is my favorite Racer.
One of MP kings on N64.
Well done
Yesss! New video !!!
GTV has the BEST Nintendos video 🔥 )m(The other videos are 🔥 too tho 😅)
The next video is a Sega one. It’s going to be hot too! 🏈
I hope MK 9 will just have every track ever.
am i the only one that likes doubledash the best? and mk8 the least?
I still prefer Mario Kart 64 over MK8. MK8 is great, of course, but sometimes I find it too chaotic to really matter if you drive good or not
15:28 - Is that the voice of video-game-enthusiast/ actor/ golfer “Brian Doyle Murray?
I thought it was Ken Hudson Campbell, who was kinda up there in the mid 90s.
I looked him up; I think you’re right. I know him best from Groundhog Day, as the “Good Morning!” espouser.
15:14 The announcer sounds like that one dude from Herman's Head.
...
Anyone?
It’s him!! I thought the same thing!! He was also in Down Periscope
@@GTV-Japan I actually went on his IMDB page wondering if I'd find the commercial, haha.

I actually prefer super mario kart :P
It has more focus on the driving and skills at cornering rather than weapons focus that later mario karts focus on.
Much different tone and atmosphere in it that I prefer and have more fun with.
Yes. It certainly is a very different game
I don't think it was ever confirmed that jr grew up to be dk in country.
Also Mario kart arcade is objectively the best one.
He wasn’t? I thought Kranky was the original DK and Jr. grew up!
@@GTV-Japan it's somewhat implied that happened with kranky the Kong family tree isn't clear.
