I’ve been playing Mario games since Donkey Kong was brand new (45 year old here). The one thing I’ve always been able to count on is the consistency of the quality and my enjoyment of them. As I get older and think I’m on the cusp of outgrowing Nintendo or games in general… the latest Mario game comes out and I end up enjoying it with the same awe and wonder and mental joy today as I did back in the mid 1980s. I’m finding that once again as I make my way through Wonder. it feels uncanny, there’s almost nothing else in life that I still enjoy the same way as I did when I was 6 years old, I don’t enjoy the same music, tv shows, or other childish things from when I was 6, but Mario… that’s a different story. I still feel the same giddy excitement, joy, and wonder with each new Mario game as I did as a young child. I never grow out of it!
I was on the cusp of sticking into the retro games, and maybe giving up on games altogether because I don’t like the direction that both Microsoft and Sonia are taking PlayStation and Xbox with the live service rubbish, and then I got my Nintendo switch and it made me fall back in love with gaming again Nintendo have a back of that to me for all the years probably since the N64 for me the Mario games I’ve kept free coming back to Nintendo years. I’ve realised I’ve had more Nintendo systems done any other systems, even if it’s mostly the handheld systems and four of their home systems in the NES, SNES, N64, Nintendo Wii I’m currently the Nintendo switch.
My 40lb 3 year old finally pulled my back real good, so I’ve been laid up for three days watching Nintendo retrospectives on my phone. I’ve watched a ton of your retrospectives these past 48 hours your passion for this stuff is always contagious. My whole family loved to play 3D world together rather guiltily my favorite thing to do was always to throw my wife or daughter off a cliff….neither of them want to go hiking with me anymore no idea why!
I’m sorry to hear you’re laid up. Take care. Thanks for watching so many videos to pass the time. I think 3D world is a great party game too if you play it like you said 😺😺
@@GTV-Japan oh real good party game tossing family and loved ones off ledges and cliffs Jack Nickleson would be proud. Very powerful what you said about nostalgia at the end of the video.
I love Mario 3d Land and especially World too! It's weird to be nostalgic for a game that came out when I was an adult and things that are so clear in my memory but I'm right there with you on them.
These bite sized levels especially for 3d land were absolutely perfect for me back in the day. They didn't feel as linear as the standard 2D titles and it rekindled my love of nintendo and video games that's for sure. Not knowing there was extra content after finishing it in 2012 was a blessing!
I got 3D Land back in the 8th grade. I was sick at home with Strep and had a high fever. My Mom comes home and says she got my medicine. It was a copy of Super Mario 3D Land and a copy of the strategy guide. I fully beat the first 8 world's that night, and as I thought it was over, I found an extra 8 world's and a final hard level that pushed me to my limits of 3D Land's friendly but ever changing knowledge barrier. 3D Land will always be special to me. It got me through a time where I was incredibly sick and struggling with school. Easily a 10 out of 10 game in every regard Thank you for this video GTV, I'll have to give this a full watch as soon as possible
Very sweet story, love hearing about people's personal connection to a title. I still remember getting my copy from my girlfriend for Christmas that year, it's been quite awhile but we're still together and she still gets me incredible gifts.
You always make the most enjoyable and informative videos no matter what the game. Thank you for doing what you do good sir. Your content is top tier at all times and i love seeing the old adverts from around the world. Keep up the good work GTV. I wish you the best and continual success in your future endeavors.
Hey man, I just want to tell you I sincerely thank you for all that you do. I’ve been rather depressed the past few days and weeks and your content always brings me a good level of comfort. I hope you’re well and things are going good for you.
I'm in my early-20s. I grew up playing a Gameboy Advance as early as I could remember. Early on, my brain was wired for the short, tight, arcade-y experiences offered by 16 and 32-bit games. Sure, I had a Wii (and loved it dearly), but most 3D exploration-style games simply didn't hold my attention the same way Mario Advance or New Super Mario had. When the Wii U launched and 3D World dropped soon after, I was over the moon! It was the exact type of gameplay I loved, with the gorgeous visuals of a home console game. The Wii U, despite most of my peers then and now bemoaning it as emblematic of everything wrong with Nintendo, held my attention like few consoles had or have since. This video had me grinning from ear-to-ear, it's great to know I'm not totally alone in my feelings.
I'm a bit of a younger gamer, but it took a while before I was introduced into the Mario series. Super Mario 3D Land was one of the first ever platforming Mario game that I'd ever played, and ever since then I've been hooked on both new and older titles. I can hardly believe that 3D World is 10 years old already! I'm surprised that you made a video on something so recently, yet at the same time it can be considered old? The music choice is excellent too, fitting the flow of the video. Both games are fantastic and I hold a lot of special memories about them. Thank you for making a video on these games.
Hey James I’m glad you liked the video! I’ll be making a few videos on things 10 and 15 years old in the future. Maybe someday I’ll be making videos on things from 2023! 😮
Another excellent documentary from GTV! I started with Nintendo when I was 4 or 5 and I saw a donkey Kong Junior arcade machine. It was the first Nintendo game I ever played.
When you mentioned about the gap between 2D Mario and 3D Mario games I remembered a flash game called "Super Mario 63" which is the total opposite of Super Mario 3D Land, a 2D collectaton with a mix of Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy, something that Nintendo would never do because it can cause confusion around players.
I sat comfortably on both sides, the 2D Mario games that I played at my friends houses when I was too young to save up and afford my own Nintendo consoles, to the N64 when I became a teenager and saved up for my own consoles. So I was able to experience Mario games from both 2D and 3D gameplay.
Sounds good. I mean did too, I just didn't like it. Maybe I played it up for the cameras, but I did not take to Mario 64, it looked great but, eh. I wanted to use the Dpad! Mario Kart 64 though, thats a different story Thanks for watching 😸
When you mentioned the fans that felt betrayed when the 3d mario games came out, I could sympathize. Like, don't get me wrong, I like 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. But, when I look at the 2D games, I always feel like, compared to them, they are games from different franchises. This is why I always hated when people said Mario had a good transition to 3D, I would always be like: "No, nothing from the 2D games made the cut, except for an italian plumber jumping around". So you can guess my excitement when 3D Land is announced. Now we have a true transition to 3D.
I also grew with the NES and SMB, and played every Mario entry in every console since then, and 3D Land and World are some of my absolute favorites, i still replay World from time to time but now with my sons.
I was a "first played Nintendo games on the Atari 2600" Gen-X kid who never left. Loved my N64. Never owned a PS1. To this day I love both 2D and 3D Mario. And Mario 64 was even at the time considered to be a colossal achievement in 3-d gaming. And since it was the first 3D Mario game, those people praising the game weren't the kids who grew up with 3D Mario. I think you're over-simplifying and over-exaggerating with the claims in Act 1.
You'll need to take a wild guess as to why, as a logical fact of life, I have less time now than before. But I got it done on time! Thanks for watching as always! Now it's on to the next 😸
Both these games hold special meaning to me. The 3DS is the system that brought me back to video games after almost a decade away...and 3D Land brings back some fond memories of that journey into, at the time, Nintendo's latest offerings. I never played the GBA or NDS, so Super Mario 64 was my last 'Mario' experience. 3D World made me realize how much of an affinity I had for Nintendo, after seeing their games in high definition for the first time. The colour, graphics and overall experience of playing SMB U and 3D World solidified that I knew I would always be a 'Nintendo fan boy' and I'm more than okay with that. Thanks for sharing. Great story.
Brother I can’t tell you how many comments are just like this and I think we’re the same age. It’s hard to believe we all had this same kind of track😺😺
@@GTV-Japan There's something special about "the big N" that resonates with so many of us. That first big connection to the hobby. Hard to explain, yet so many people understand. Thanks again!
This is one of the best retrospectives I've seen on TH-cam in a long time. Thank you very much for the quality work you always put out. To me, Mario never got better than Super Mario Bros. 3. I liked Super Mario World and the New Super Mario games, but none of them surpassed the perfection that was SMB3. I didn't like Super Mario 64 when it was launched, and I never gave Sunshine a fair chance at the time. But then Super Mario Galaxy came and blew my mind, and it motivated me to go back to Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, and now I really like both of those games a lot. And then 3D Land and 3D World came out and hooked me immediately. Both are amazing games, and they feel a lot different from other Mario games. I also loved Odyssey and Wonder. Super Mario Bros. 3 will, however, always be the peak of the Mario gaming universe and probably the best platform game ever made.
@@GTV-Japan Oh, Galaxy is not my favorite 3D Mario. That would actually be 3D World, but Galaxy was the game that made me finally like 3D Mario. Up to that point I was a 2D Mario only guy.
Very nice video. Your closing hit me pretty hard. I too had the DS and later a 3DS, to Wii and then Wii U to now a Switch. When I do boot up my 3DS and play some old games like Mario and Luigi, or even farther back and play some Super Stars Super Saga, there is a wave of emotion and memories that comeback. Given I stayed playing my systems up until life events stopped me, and like you I packed up my Wii U because I got a Switch, but hearing about the history of some of these old games still bring back the memories. Seeing a screen it pulls my back like "oh, I remember I was doing this time at this event when I finished this level..." etc. I don't know how to finish this... I'll just say good job. These little retrospectives and documentaries accomplish some nostalgia.
I grew up on 2d Mario (World is my favourite)and think Mario 64 is one of the best games ever, landmark title and didn’t find the N64 controller confusing at all. I also don’t find 3d land/world as fun as galaxy or odyssey 🤷🏻♂️
This is an excellent, much-needed video. These games are masterpieces, as those review scores reflected, so they deserved this in-depth retrospective. Yeah, it would be great to have a Switch port of 3D Land, but the 3DS will always be an essential console to have no matter what, because it has a ton of fantastic games that are stuck on it.
Yeah I forgot how fun it was. And I loved the street pass thing and trading minis and collecting puzzles etc. it was always a different surprise every day. I went to the used store and saw all the 3ds games were only 500 yen so I got a bunch of them. Great deals 😺😺have a good weekend
I've been looking forward to this video since you mentioned it to me in a reply three weeks ago, and it didn't disappoint. Your retrospectives deserve an award of some kind. I can't believe Mario Maker is gonna be ten in just two years now too. I'm now looking forward to the Mario Maker retrospective haha. jk. But it was cool hearing you talk about how much you liked 3D world. I know top 10 list videos are lame and "so 2014", but I think a GTV's 10 ten games of all time would be real interesting.
Well, I'm one of those old school gamers who embraced the 3D gameplay and had no trouble getting the hang of it. I didn't feel alienated when I played Mario 64.
already loving this precisely BECAUSE i am not in your age group. love hearing perspectives from those a little older than me who were turned off by 3d
I'm going to out myself as being on the younger side but I can't resist because the 3D land game holds some meaning. Back in 2012 one day, in my hometown, I saw a new strip of stores being constructed in a wal-mart plaza. I'll never forget, I saw one of the retail spaces on the end was a hibachi Japanese restaurant, but a mini one called "miyabi Jr." I went inside even though it was still under construction and these Japanese people were there. Surprisingly, they were really nice and liked how I was dressed because I was wearing a tucked in Polo which must have made a good impression. One of them was an owner and the other had practically just gotten off the plane from Japan, brought there to manage the new location. They sat me down and gave me the job with the opening crew. First job I ever had and with the first paycheck, I went next door to the gamestop and bought a red 3DS and new mario bros. 2. I was so torn between that one and 3d Land. I beat it easily and bought 3D Land next. The experience of that is more fun to look back on the game itself. It was a novelty that I enjoyed, nothing more. I associate the game with the first experience of earning something. I was a child in the gamecube days and played N64 as well as Gameboy and NES in an aunt's basement during summer visits. Am a modern Nintendo fan or older?? Maybe somewhere in the middle.. What am I??
You’re a fan! That’s all that matters! And yes a right a proper young man should always tuck his shirt in! The head nun at my school would wrap your knuckles if you weren’t in presentable shape at all times. Since then I’ve refused to dress like a slob! I never blew a job interview and never walked around looking like in rolled out of bed either! Thanks for sharing your story 😺😺😺
Great video, actually discovered this before I discovered you from the RC discord. Loved it, and especially enjoyed the details about "athletics" in Japan. I didn't quite know that until watching this. Super Mario 3D World was my dream Mario game since childhood for a variety of reasons. The way they translated the 3D to be more like the 2D games (which I actually think makes exploration more interesting and rewarding), being able to use multiple characters and with multiplayer. I'd have dreamed of that game as a child. 3D Land was great too.
3D World is such a good game and I seem to love it more every time I play it. I've only ever played it on the Wii U though. I'm old too and 3D World and Link Between Worlds on 3DS came out the same day in the US and I actually went to a store and bought them both. It was exciting and made me feel like a kid again. I'm a pretty normal guy with a normal life but it was a lot of fun 10 years ago. I like Mario Wonder, but I do hope Nintendo is secretly working on another big and unforgettable Mario game like 3D world. Thanks for the video
Mario 3 will always be my favourite, but I had a lot of fun with 3D Land and 3D World. Super Mario Dimension sounds great, but let's go 11D with Super Mario String Theory!
another great video by GTV Japan, i love your retrospectives, i actually am 28 years old and was raised on the N64 and Gamecube, but i also had a Famiclone! which was a pirate machine that could use famicon style cartridges to play those 300 games in 1 with mostly NES and exclusive Famicom games and thats where i played the original Super Mario Bros and i loved how hard it was, it was weird when my sisters who actually owned an NES told me it was an old game! Then i had a Wii and it came with the virtual console and thats how i played classics like Castlevania and Mega man which somehow werent on my Famiclone but i fell in love with that era and game design. I also just played 3D Land and 3D World this year and let me say they are masterpieces so i agree with all your points, but still for me Super Mario 64 is king! Also if you wonder why i had a famiclone, i was a kid in the early 2000s in Mexico and those were really popular in Latin America on those years... google Poly Station so you can have a laugh!
My father brought home an NES Action Set in 1988 with the Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cartridge included for my 3rd birthday. It was the first video game I ever played and one of the earliest memories that I can clearly recall. It's amazing that Mario has been there for every console generation since and the games are nearly always masterpieces that pretty much never disappoint.
I was never let down for Super Mario 1 2 3 Land World, New, New 2, New Wii, New U, 3D Land, 3D World, and Odyssey. Well except for that part about collecting moons over and over again.
@@GTV-Japan - Same here except by the time New Super Mario Bros U launched I started feeling like the "new" series was getting a little tired but I also had played them all which isn't the same for everyone. It was still better than many other games on the market though which shows how consistently high Nintendo has kept the quality.
Like how Super Mario 3D world uses a lot of things from Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. Such as the touch blocks and clone cherry puzzles. And Bowser's Furry took cat Mario and 3D World to the next level. Great games.
I really got my start with 2D Mario games with Super Mario Land on my aunt's GameBoy. Then started with Super Mario 64 for the 3D mario games. But when my brother got 3D land on 3ds, I played it & fell in love with it. Then I eventually bought 3D World after buying the WiiU 32gb bundle. It was a wonderful game & sequel to 3D Land. But often I find myself wanting to go back to 3D Land more. I've never figure out why exactly though.
It blew over my head for a long time. Then I was walking through the park one day years ago and I heard some kids screaming (in Japanese) “hey took an athletic! Let’s play on the athletic” and I was like huh? Then it clicked. There’s like a thousand moments like that I’ve had where just observing daily life solved every confusing thing in a video game I saw growing up. These are the basis for many videos I’ve done 😺
I was born in 85 and landed right in the middle of genX and Y gaming. Since 88. Mario 3d world was the best mario since the 90s . i was no stranger to the games that did come before me as well. I still play retro stuff. I like both formats of mario. Mario wonder nailed it too. Nintendo has done the same w zelda having big 3d games and smaller old school ish
Very much reminded of my initial reaction to Super Mario 64, being turned off and confused. It took an hour or two before it clicked and I started loving it but part of me missed and feared the classic style might be forever lost. Thankfully that wasn't the case and even to this day Nintendo puts out some incredible Mario titles that bring me back to my childhood in the best way possible. And even the expansion on the formula, and topic of this video, is a really incredible expansion giving a great happy medium between the two styles. Thank you once again for yet another great look at a part of gaming history.
Thank you! I knew I wasn’t crazy! Also some people take every single word spoken on TH-cam as literal gospel truth! Can there be no commentary? No opinion? No characters? 😺😺😺
Love both games immensely. One of my earliest gaming memories was playing the OG Mario games on my Parents old Nes. Same duck hunt cartridge and all. Never fell out of the series loved 64 when I got it for Christmas. There's something special about the curated obstacle courses that I think the Galaxy and these games capture so well. However I think if Nintendo were to remake or re-release a Mario game that hasnt been done yet Galaxy 2 is going to take precedent over 3D Land.
11:17 "The ability to turn into an invincible statue was split from the super leaf" The leaf never let you turn into a statue. The tanooki suit was always a separate powerup from the racoon leaf. If you play the first level of Super Mario Bros 3, you can try out the leaf power. It's pretty fun.
I loved the Wii U, and Super Mario 3D World was such a wonderful game. I don't usually bother doing everything in games, generally just content finishing them once and maybe replaying them again later if I really enjoyed them, but something about 3D World made me complete it 100%, even getting all the stickers. For year I've felt Mario game design has split between "complete the level" style of older 2D games and "find stuff" of the more non-linear 3D games, with Galaxy being more of a hybrid, and 3D Land and 3D World imagining what Mario games would be if the 2D games got a proper sequel, but in 3D. I enjoy pretty much all of the games, but I definitely like the "beat the level" structure more, and didn't quite vibe with SM64 or Sunshine. Odyssey was amazing, tho. Super Mario Wonder this year was an absolute delight, and the indirect shared co-operation of the online play with strangers was a wonderful addition.
Growing up with both 2d and 3d mario, and falling in love with the 3DS this game was amazing as it continued from The New Super Mario Bros. This is a newer game for your channel and to be honest I like it. But of course natsukashi games are always good too!!
I will eventually run out of 8 bit topics and these "new" games are actually getting old, so why not? Otherwise I'll be a sad husk of a man reviewing Family Matters and other TV shows someone else writes for me. when I have time that is 😸
I bought my Wii U at launch, bought every decent looking game that was released and I've ended up with 67 games for that thing 😅 I was close to packing it up, however since the e-shop closed I decided to MOD it and now it's my go to for basically anything Nintendo prior to 3ds and switch. I'm still hopeful someone much smarter than me is working on a 3ds emulator for Wii U that console is the only one around that could do the 3ds right.....excluding the "3d" of course! Great video as always, glad it popped up on my feed when it's not 1:30 am lol. Thanks for the content!
I've always said you can tell what era a Mario gamer based on either if they call them Princess Toadstool and King Koopa or Peach and Bowser. Mainly due to the merchandising and outside media (comics, cartoons) at the time. Always found it fascinating that it was always one of them with their Japanese name, and the other their American name.
@@GTV-Japan I think that's why they transitioned it with SM64, using her American name and then having her sign her letter at the beginning of the game as Peach. I combine the two, Princess Peach Toadstool, King Bowser Koopa. Anyway, you want a real throwback, I remember when Peach was a Red Head. I kinda miss that.
People seem to have forgotten the days of "King Koopa", "Princess Toadstool", and "Magikoopa". I say Peach now, but still say the rest. Weird that Nintendo of America decided to change one character's name back to the original used in Japan, but then not change the one that English speakers already called by his original name. The alliterations sound better too.
I feel like my life as a gamer is oddly different even within the country I grew up in. I lived during the era of the PS1 and N64 but didn't grow up with Mario or Spyro or Crash or Zelda. I grew up with weird budget games and locally made indie games. So most of my experience of the early era of these games comes from hearing about other people's stories of them and thus my experience is osmotic. It's fascinating to me to see how people look back on childhood games whose legacies continue to today.
I am right in between the two groups you created. I grew up in the 4th gen, with the Super Nintendo. Super Mario World was the first video game I've ever seen or played, and it was all I ever played when I first got my Super Nintendo. I was quite young, so my mind got blown when I learned the system could play other games! (I saw someone play final fight, and was so confused that the SNES was playing something different.) After that, I played the Super Mario All Stars, and then Mario Land 1, 2 & 3, Super Mario World 2, and finished my formative Mario experience with Mario 64. (Although I did like Banjo Kazooie more than Mario 64)
Thanks for sharing your experience and opinions! Much appreciated! I did kind of combine 8 and 16 bit together. Maybe they should be separated! But certainly the start of 3D is a clear dividing line
I find myself somewhere between the the modern and classic Mario camps probably because I was raised with exposure to the NES, SNES and N64 in a pretty close time frame. Nowadays, I gravitate more towards the 2D-style games; I find them easier understand and feel that there's more room for clever ideas and action in a linear space. I could definitely get behind the idea of Super Mario 3D World being the best Mario game. Another fascinating or mysterious little secret in Mario 3D World that I haven't seen many people mention, is that not only can you use the Wii U Gamepad to freeze enemies in their tracks, but you can also rub or scratch a lot of enemies and friendly characters (like Plessie or Sprixies) and they'll drop coins! The friendly characters even make happy noises and have animations when you "pet" them. It's kind of a weird feature that the developers put in, but it does kind of add to the cat theme in the game. (I'm also not sure if this is in the Switch version. I only had the Wii U release to test it with.) I'm not sure if you're interested or allow links in your comments, but I made a silly video about this "petting feature" on my other TH-cam channel about a year ago documenting what I found.
I was many Years absent from Nintendo Stuff, than i got a 3DS and i really liked the System, so that i bought a Wii U and felt in love with that Console. It had Fun with it since i hadn't since the Super Nintendo. 3D World in that Way really was my secon "Super Mario World", as i can't describe how it felt at that Time. I somehow can't get so much into the Nintendo Games on the Switch.
@@GTV-Japan Or it was as you said in the Video, a good Time for People in their ~30s to rediscover Nintendo Games, guess it was near enough to what People experienced in the 90s :D
I’ve been playing since 1989 and Super Mario Galaxy 1 is in my top 5 and I enjoyed Super Mario 3D Land as well. I’ve always thought 3D world looked good but I never had a Wii U, But I recently bought 3D World for Switch and look forward to getting into it one day.
I loved the 3DS. I remember as a kid I had to undergo vision therapy to make my eyes work together properly. As a result, as an adult, I never had the complaints others had about stereoscopic 3D movies, and when the 3DS came along with its 3D screen I was surprised to hear people say they immediately turned that 3D slider to off and never touched it again. I could play 3DS games with the 3D on all day if I had the time (not anymore due to neuropathy in my hands) without any of those headaches people complain of (and I am quite prone to headaches and migraines). Ah, how I miss new stereoscopic gaming experiences, but I'm glad I had that therapy as a kid, even if it was a pain at the time. I also never stopped playing those 8 and 16-bit games even as the industry moved forward. New N64 games were expensive, but I could go to a yard sale and get NES and SNES games for cheap at the time, and later similarly discovered emulation. I also have fond memories of Jumping Flash on Playstation.
Fantastic video as always! And it hasn't been 10 whole years since 3D World came out right? We're not that old right? BTW @ 37:00 the 3DS and Switch both used ARM CPUs but in different configurations. A lot of 3DS games have been remade for Switch because of this relationship, and maybe someday 3D Land could come back!
As someone who purchased Odyssey along with the Switch in 2017, I didn't know until now that the Mario Amiibo unlocks Rainbow Road music 👀 Anyway, I actually really enjoy both 3D Land and 3D Wörld a lot. Completed those multiple times too. For now I hope Wonder brings me the same joy but overall I am really happy to have had the chance to play these games.
23:49 This was called the Mega Mushroom in New SMB1/2/Wii/U/U Deluxe; the "Super Mushroom" was what they renamed what was once called the Magic Mushroom back in the day. 3D Land: Soooooo that whole thing about King Koopa tryna use Mario's power ups against him? It's probably unlikely, but it seems like it draws inspiration from an episode of DiC Entertainment's "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3", where King Koopa stole a bunch of power ups to try using against Mario.
I remember playing my first Mario game SMW on my cousins SNES when I was 3 or 4. I wish there was an official remake of SMW in the style 3D World engine.
Speaking of the Wii U 3D World Soundtrack, I had a European club Nintendo account, and somehow managed to scrounge enough points together to get that Soundtrack as a physical reward as well, so it was available to EU Club Nintendo members as well.
Very nice I had no idea! So that’s great you could do it. Some soundtracks were for points in Japan but this Mario kart 8 and smash brothers were all given away by mail for day onners
0:00 to 6:07 is spoken like someone who knows _absolutely nothing_ about Gen Y... and _it shows._ Sure, Mario 64 and Sunshine weren't complete 1-to-1 translations of the original games (In fact, they really are a complete reinvention of Mario), but Gen Y was not un-familiar with 2D Mario. *Mario Bros, SMB1, 2, 3, and World all were ported to the GBA and Wii.* We were WELL aware of what 2D Mario was like long before New SMB on DS rolled around.
40 year old here and my first console was the Sega Master System at 4 or 5 years old. So for me I didn't get an NES until Christmas of 1990 at 7 years old but I got to play all 3 versions of Mario at the same time especially Mario 3 since it had just come out. Now I did get to play Mario 64 at 13 years old when they had it on display at Best Buy a few months before the system even came out. That and Pilotwings 64 was what drove me into buying the N64 but I'll be honest in that when I rented the game I was so disappointed that for the first time I decided not to buy a Mario game for the first time ever. That carried over into the Gamecube era when I saw Mario Sunshine and by pictures alone I refused to even try it let alone by it. For a while I felt bitter and betrayed by Nintendo releasing classic mario games on their handhelds but not on their mainline systems. After the gamecube died I passed on the Wii for several years until New SMB came out where finally after damn there 2 decades we got a proper mainline console version of a mario game and that motivated me to buying the Wii, the Wii U for New SMB U. I didn't begin to start liking the 3D mario games until Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World. Figured I'd share my own anecdote as a Mario fan. 😎
Really we kind of follow the same path. There have been some comments saying I am literally insane for not praising Mario 64 as the greatest game of all time, but I knew there were others out there who weren’t taken by it. I looked at Sunshine and thought “Mario? Is he still around?” The ps1 and 2 were so white hot there was no other reason to buy anything else. But I remember in 2006 a friend told me about new super Mario and my jaw dropped I had to have a DS and it was so fun! So just know you’re not alone out there my man!
Oh and I should add I bought an N64 day one. More for my brother than me but I was able to snag one because I didn’t have school! Just took the day off work and went to the airport babbages where three units were just sitting there. No one thought to look there while everywhere else was sold out basically until 97.
Us "younger gamers" enjoyed NSMB. We also had Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on GBC and the Super Mario Advance series to catch us up on all of the prior Super Mario games. Animal Crossing included NES emulation and with Action Replay and GBA (whose best-selling game was Super Mario Bros. from the NES Classics line) made sure us kids born 10 years after the NES' North American release could easily get access to "trial and error" games.
Oh that’s interesting! Well all I can say is all my nephews hated those games and had no patience for them. I’ve heard stories of kids not knowing how to play stage 1-1 as well😺
Super Mario 3D World is a masterpiece of game design and the soundtrack is just sublime. P.S. I still suffer from Champion's Road flashbacks...that just might be the hardest Mario Bros. level of all to 100%. P.P.S. Super Mario World is still the king of all video games.
Firstly, 3D World is my favorite as well. As I near 40, I value its fun and amazing music the most. Second, how did you not get hit by that spiky swing in your Champion’s Road run?!?! Third, my favorite memory of the game is the first time I beat CR. My wife, my friend and I were trying it over and over. The first run we ever made it to the end we were running low on time. I knew it would be close. I ran up and grab the stamp and got the top of the flag pole. To my surprise the clock read zeros but I completed the stage. I always valued having that “best time 500”.
Wow! You just made it!! I remember the first time I beat the championship road. That thing is hardddddd I had 4 controllers and 3 characters in bubbles ready incase I fell off. It still took like 9 million times. But now if you pace yourself you realize it’s a recreation of every challenge in the game. Once you think of that it gets a little easier
For a certain group of people. I was not one of them. Many of us went to PlayStation and loved it. You’ll find a few comments here that echo my feelings. It all depends on how you were and what you expected out of games! It’s funny because I had a friend who bought me ocarina of time for Christmas in 1998 and I did say thank you nicely but never played it. Just gave it to my brothers and they liked it. The only n64 game I really remember was crusin USA which I did enjoy a lot. But I was basically mister PlayStation from the beginning
I think we can expect the next big 3D Mario well before 2027-28, as you suggested. Switch 2 is probably going to be out in 2024-25, and Odyssey was so long ago now.
You ever tried walking up mahnt warshintun in the snow after the incline is closed! My babushka used to do it twice a week to get her pierogis from the Orthodox Church dahn south side.
3:38 "Nintendo never says you lost a life" - They don't have to say it. Mario's body contracts with the agonized spasms of death, and his body falls away into the underworld. But they never actually say that jumping into lava is harmful, right?

Sounds good! To keep that "old time retro feel" I only get new games on Christmas day, so in about 6 weeks I will finally know! 😸
@@GTV-JapanThat's really cool!
I appreciate the n64 now but man you nailed the exact experience of getting a PlayStation.
You don't have to grow out of it, Mario is not synonym with child, Mario is for all ages.
@@JustinMBaileybeen there done that. I never knew I could lie on the couch and play for days, and I love the fact that my kids understand
I love Mario 3d Land and especially World too! It's weird to be nostalgic for a game that came out when I was an adult and things that are so clear in my memory but I'm right there with you on them.
Great to hear that I’m not the only one
My very first NES game was Super Mario 3, and I still play it to this day.
These bite sized levels especially for 3d land were absolutely perfect for me back in the day. They didn't feel as linear as the standard 2D titles and it rekindled my love of nintendo and video games that's for sure. Not knowing there was extra content after finishing it in 2012 was a blessing!
That’s true! These days you’d have to pay for those levels
Easily a 10 out of 10 game in every regard
Thank you for this video GTV, I'll have to give this a full watch as soon as possible
What a great story! Except for being sick! 😸
Thanks so much I appreciate that. I’ll take the words with me as motivation to keep going!😺
Hey man, I just want to tell you I sincerely thank you for all that you do. I’ve been rather depressed the past few days and weeks and your content always brings me a good level of comfort. I hope you’re well and things are going good for you.
I’m sorry to hear that. You can talk to me anytime no worries man!
Good to know we’re not alone in the universe 😺
I don't believe in time or calendars. All I know is that I have been waiting for the Phantasy Star IV review for 27 years.

Awesome 🙈
When you mentioned about the gap between 2D Mario and 3D Mario games I remembered a flash game called "Super Mario 63" which is the total opposite of Super Mario 3D Land, a 2D collectaton with a mix of Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy, something that Nintendo would never do because it can cause confusion around players.
That’s weird!😺😺
This channel is so underappreciated
Thank you! I like the channel being under the radar.
It wasn’t just Mario. Lots of games in 3D are nothing like they were in 2d.
I also grew with the NES and SMB, and played every Mario entry in every console since then, and 3D Land and World are some of my absolute favorites, i still replay World from time to time but now with my sons.
That's the best!!
“The Best Game” = “What brought a smile to your face & ❤️ when playing.”
Absolutley!
I think you're over-simplifying and over-exaggerating with the claims in Act 1.
duh! its all a set up for the reconcilation at the end.
As someone who grew up with the original Super Mario on the NES, I really loved Mario 3D Land. Thanks for the video @GTV
You’re welcome 😺😺

It’s already done! But I got to hang onto it until til next week or I’ll have too long of a gap after that doh!

It seems like of the three people like galaxy the best!
@@GTV-Japan Oh, Galaxy is not my favorite 3D Mario. That would actually be 3D World, but Galaxy was the game that made me finally like 3D Mario. Up to that point I was a 2D Mario only guy.
@GimblyGFR ahh I see.
Thanks friend I’m glad you liked it! 🐱
I grew up on 2d Mario (World is my favourite)and think Mario 64 is one of the best games ever, landmark title and didn’t find the N64 controller confusing at all.

Happy to provide a different point of view!

Yes exactly! I think we need a 3D world 2 also!

another great video by GTV Japan, i love your retrospectives, i actually am 28 years old and was raised on the N64 and Gamecube, but i also had a Famiclone! which was a pirate machine that could use famicon style cartridges to play those 300 games in 1 with mostly NES and exclusive Famicom games and thats where i played the original Super Mario Bros and i loved how hard it was, it was weird when my sisters who actually owned an NES told me it was an old game!
Awesome to hear! Thanks for watching. And as always keep it in the “family”
Like how Super Mario 3D world uses a lot of things from Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. Such as the touch blocks and clone cherry puzzles. And Bowser's Furry took cat Mario and 3D World to the next level. Great games.
I like how the games connect. It’s nice ATD and just fun
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and memories
What a fantastic video
Cheers! I have tons more just on Mario! Why not check them out when you have time
Now it makes so much more sense why some songs in Mario games were called "Athletic".
11:17 "The ability to turn into an invincible statue was split from the super leaf"
The leaf never let you turn into a statue. The tanooki suit was always a separate powerup from the racoon leaf. If you play the first level of Super Mario Bros 3, you can try out the leaf power. It's pretty fun.
The leaves in 3D Land
Wii U was great!
Another wonderful and well done video! Great work GTV!
Thanks! It took 3 weeks! Mainly because I got lost in playing 3D Land again! 😸
I didn’t even know this game existed. Great video!
How?!
Thanks I;m glad I could tell ya 😸
@@Vulpas didn’t own a 3DS.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I had a TON of fun beating 3D world with my son. Amazing times.
It’s a fun game for kids and their nintendads for sure
It’s probably my fav. Mario game👍
3D World is up there with Mario 64 and Mario 3 as my favourite Mario games
Hey no problem! Glad you liked! I don’t have 67 games but I did but every single Nintendo Wii U game on day one! It was a fun experiment.
3D World is my favorite Mario game. I love almost all of them, but 3D Land and World still feel so fresh and unique.
Thats because the are! the only 2 of their kind 😸
Oops I forgot to add that! Why did her name change to peach?! Haha anyway the past is strange place 😺
@mightyfilm I think her hair was red because it was the same color as the fire in 8-4 probably a way to save data. Just a theory
@Schwarzorn I still call her Princess Peach Toadstool like it’s her first and last name. Or at least of the royal house of Toadstool 🍄
That is weird. What locally made indie games were on the PS and 64?
I am right in between the two groups you created. I grew up in the 4th gen, with the Super Nintendo. Super Mario World was the first video game I've ever seen or played, and it was all I ever played when I first got my Super Nintendo. I was quite young, so my mind got blown when I learned the system could play other games! (I saw someone play final fight, and was so confused that the SNES was playing something different.)
After that, I played the Super Mario All Stars, and then Mario Land 1, 2 & 3, Super Mario World 2, and finished my formative Mario experience with Mario 64.
I only had the Wii U release to test it with.)
I'm not sure if you're interested or allow links in your comments, but I made a silly video about this "petting feature" on my other TH-cam channel about a year ago documenting what I found.
Yeah go ahead leave a link I’ll approve it! Also new Mario U has that same feature. It’s funny
@@GTV-Japan Huh, I'll have to replay Mario U and check that out then! And here's a link to that video: th-cam.com/video/ZQmaeqAv3WU/w-d-xo.html
I’m surprised how many people are saying the same thing! It’s awesome. Maybe Wii U was the best time for games this century 😺
I’ve always thought 3D world looked good but I never had a Wii U,
But I recently bought 3D World for Switch and look forward to getting into it one day.
I highly recommend it!
I never had headaches but playing in 3D on a busy train is hard because it shakes and moves and you lose focus, literally and figuratively. 😸
It’s 12 years for land and 10 for world! Yes we’re that old! But it doesn’t bother me. I never age and still look good 😎
As someone who purchased Odyssey along with the Switch in 2017, I didn't know until now that the Mario Amiibo unlocks Rainbow Road music 👀
Anyway, I actually really enjoy both 3D Land and 3D Wörld a lot. Completed those multiple times too.
For now I hope Wonder brings me the same joy but overall I am really happy to have had the chance to play these games.
I think I amy have misspoke and its "rainbow run" but its still rainbow road in japanese which is the version I played. Anyway it is neat! 😸
That would be bad. And by bad I mean how we used it in 1988. The correct way!
I love the first level of Super mario 3D World
Yay! what about the rest?
@@GTV-Japan it is good too
It was the fist mario game my niece and I played. Then we played the other titles. The cat outfits made her love it
I have heard kids refer to it solely as "cat mario" which makes sense and sounds cuter than the real title 😸
Not a big Mario fan but 3D World is my favorite Mario game.
All right!!
3D Land series is still underated !!!
I never knew Super Mario 3D Land had the P Wing, since I never sucked _that_ bad.
Nice humble brag 🍺
0:00 to 6:07 is spoken like someone who knows _absolutely nothing_ about Gen Y... and _it shows._
Sure, Mario 64 and Sunshine weren't complete 1-to-1 translations of the original games (In fact, they really are a complete reinvention of Mario), but Gen Y was not un-familiar with 2D Mario.
*Mario Bros, SMB1, 2, 3, and World all were ported to the GBA and Wii.* We were WELL aware of what 2D Mario was like long before New SMB on DS rolled around.
That’s true! But my experience with those born after 2000 is that they hated those games and didn’t like them.
I have a question.Do you think that super mario wonder is just a 2D version of 3D land & world
I don't know I have never played it. From the commercials it look like NEW NEW!! Super Mario Bros.
GTV YESSSSS
Us "younger gamers" enjoyed NSMB. We also had Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on GBC and the Super Mario Advance series to catch us up on all of the prior Super Mario games.
Animal Crossing included NES emulation and with Action Replay and GBA (whose best-selling game was Super Mario Bros. from the NES Classics line) made sure us kids born 10 years after the NES' North American release could easily get access to "trial and error" games.
Oh that’s interesting! Well all I can say is all my nephews hated those games and had no patience for them. I’ve heard stories of kids not knowing how to play stage 1-1 as well😺
3D Land and World is what they wanted to make back in the N64 but couldn't
Yeah it looks that way! These 2010 interviews with Miyamoto are very apologetic which is a funny contrast to the ones in 1996
I completely agree!!
I didn't know there was a background story on Super Mario 3D Land!!
Yeah just a little 🦝
Super Mario 3D World is a masterpiece of game design and the soundtrack is just sublime.
P.S. I still suffer from Champion's Road flashbacks...that just might be the hardest Mario Bros. level of all to 100%.
P.P.S. Super Mario World is still the king of all video games.
I’m torn on the fact that you can’t be a white tanooki but it’s the only way to show you’ve truly earned the right to be one of the best!😺😺😺
2:10 good to see I’m not the only one! Mario 2D always!
Cheers brother! Of course I’m exaggerating but it really made some people butthurt as you can see ha. It’s just a video! Thanks for watching 😺😺
Love the channel but man NO ONE ever hated on Mario 64. Younger fans should know what the narrator says about what “we” said is complete hogwash.
It’s not true. I hated 64 and so did my friends. Why can’t I use the d pad??!
You are correct. Mario 64 and basically the N64 as a whole was beloved between ‘96-99 even though it gets hate on the internet nowadays.
Let’s hope it’s sooner than later. Time will prove everything.
Nice
14:45 Yinz be careful. It’s slippy ‘aught!
Nice.
Love this channel alot! Please cover the SMT franchise!!! love seeing japanese game focused channels doing big in japan franchises like SMT and dragon quest =)
It’s been my promise from day one to do as many videos as I can on topics I know best, never chase views and never fake it. That said I hope I can deliver topics you like but can’t do everything. I have been gathering a lot of film from the 80s and 90s for some Enix related things though!!
