  • My Very First Ever Laser Engraved Project on a Longer Ray5 20-watt Diode Laser, and my thoughts.
The company Longer reached out to me before Christmas and they were impressed with the new build videos of Sandling Junction and asked me if I would like to take on one of their lasers to try out.
I was already researching laser engravers and Longer was on my shortlist, so it was a no-brainer to accept.
They did not want a review which I was pleased about, and I wanted to share my experiences with you all as to whether would I recommend getting one or not, my true thoughts for someone who like me is sitting on the fence trying to decide.

Paul, a really very interesting and informative post.
For someone like myself who hasn’t a clue when it comes to either laser cutting or 3D printing, but areas I do wish to get into, videos like this are immensely helpful for confidence building in both knowledge of method and the types of machines and accessories available.
A really helpful and well presented video…..thank you
    Best Regards Gary

What a learning curve Paul! You make it look so simple and stepwise. I have marvelled at the kind of results Julian has achieved with Station Road but thought oh well he is a used to all this graphic tech stuff! You have made it appear doable and I will look to invest in such a system. Thanks teacher! 😉

Wow, Paul, I'm very impressed with this video and your presentation of it. Considering how new you are to the software and equipment, you've explained the process so simply and clearly that I'm sure any newcomer to the laser cutter will be most grateful for this informative video. I've always known that you are a great art teacher, but knowing you and tech, I would never have guessed that you're a great software teacher too! Congratulations on the finished totem, it looks stunning. I'm so looking forward to seeing what you create next. Whatever it is, it will be unique to you x

Thanks for this informative and encouraging tutorial, it’s great that you appreciate that we’re not all instant expert on all this tech, but have the courage to lead the way and hold our hand on this journey. Many thanks Paul, very much appreciated.

    Hi Paul
Hope your keeping well buddy, Love this video and thanks for sharing - THINK YOU HAVE MADE MY MIND UP,
    - I been looking at laser cutters for a while now - but this looks very impressive, and especially for what our hobby needs are.. Love the Totem BTW 👍
Totally agree this is a game changer in creating special buildings not bespoke to our individual layouts - Brick work buildings is where I am interested in as buying plastic sheets to cover wood structures seems double handing and more of a cost, so I can already see the benefits here long term..
    Thanks again. 👍
Keep safe and all the best Garry

The laser machines are a great tool that's for sure and I've been making kits for the industry now for nearly 6 years. We should invite you down to our unit so you can see the top of the range machines in action........it'll blow your mind that's for sure.
There's that satisfaction you get when you've designed and made something......' I did that!' and six years on I still get that feeling and I'm still learning every day. I'm intrigued that you 'engraved' the words Sandling Junction just so you could stick the overlay letters on. That was the part that took the majority of the time. You could have simply done the wording in an outline and got the laser to kiss cut the line and then stuck the letters on.....would have saved a lot of time.
I'll be watching with interest on how you get on and I'll predict that before long, you'll be buying a bigger and better laser machine.
    Best Wishes
    Steve @ Railway Laser Lines

Thank you, Steve, yes you are correct it is a mind-blowing avenue to walk down and I am really hoping that I get the chance to really explore the opportunities that await me. I realized that I could have outlined the letters for speed, but wanted to show the engraving on this the first one. As I do more I will learn, and get better. For me right now it is getting to grips with creating different brick effects, bonds, corbel, and archway effects to add to building faces, etc. It demands more knowledge of vector and drawing outside of being an artist and drawing bricks lol. We will see, cheers again Steve, I enjoy your work. P
