Why I'm in LOVE with Jakarta Chinatown 😍 | Indonesian Food

  • Chinatown in Jakarta isn't a tourist trap, it's a great spot for Chinese Indonesian food and bargain shopping.
You can support my work at / ayngelina where I share tips that don't make it into videos and behind the scenes content.
Welcome to Glodok Pancoran. And that's right we are in Chinatown in Jakarta. Now, this is the oldest Chinatown in all of Indonesia. And it's considered to be one of the least touristy. That's right. This is a working marketplace.
There are lots of shops here, tons of food because we're in Jakarta. And this is really a place where you can get a lot of things. In fact, I actually need to pick up some things. And so I'm here with Aloy, my new Jakarta friends and my trusty food guide, we're going to do a little bit of shopping, do a lot of eating, and then just check this place out, because it also has the oldest temple in Jakarta, and I think actually a Catholic church.
Chinatown here isn't a place. It's a neighborhood of many streets, we decided first up, we were trying to get some culture go check out that Catholic Church. Now I was raised Catholic. So I don't usually seek out churches, especially since I spend so much time in Latin America. But this one's supposed to be interesting because it's a Catholic church with Chinese influence.

Hi I'm Ayngelina and my full time job is my site BaconisMagic.ca it's all about the best food around the world and how to make it at home.
In 2010 I left a job in advertising, 5 year relationship and sold all my possessions to travel the world. In the last ten years I've had some crazy experiences and even owned a restaurant in Toronto at one time. And prior to 2020 I had been based in Cuba.
When the world shut down I returned to Canada and decided to teach myself video. I wanted to share more than just words and photos but to show people the adventures I have learning about food around the world.
I'm not married. I have no kids. But I do have a lot of local friends who help me discover the best local tips.

4:01 Bengkuang or bengkoang is known as Jicama in English. It's actually not a fruit, but rather a kind of edible root vegetable like radish or yam.

"Bengkoang" : "Pachyrhizus erosus, commonly known as jícama" you should try it raw and cold!! it's refreshing...

    Food looks so good.
I suggest moving your Monday videos back to Wednesday or even Tuesday not Mondays. It is the beginning of the work week for too many people and they do not have the time to watch.
So many little things I need to learn how to make because they are not easy/available for me to get where I live.
Springroll wraps, how to make rice noodles and also dumpling wraps.

Absolutely incredible. The shopping option there looks like a lot of fun too. How widely spoken is English there, and is it best to have a guide while there?

In Cantonese culture, the fried dough (or "yaotiew" in Cantonese) is, as you mentioned, often cut into pieces and eaten with rice porridge (congee or "jook"). But, following the "churros" model, I often eat them whole and dip them in honey. It's simple and tasty. We don't have vendors selling them freshly fried where I am in the U.S. But, most Asian supermarkets sell them refrigerated. You can heat them up in the toaster oven in literally less than a minute, and they're piping hot and crispy.

@@ayngelina Yeah, the refrigerated fried dough sticks should be readily available in Chinese supermarkets in Canada. Particularly, in the greater Vancouver or Toronto areas.
