    Many are Hokkien descent but it's still pretty diverse. The Santung Kwotie place is Shangdongnese. Their sign actually says "asli ncek santung" meaning the founder came straight from Shandong. Kopi Es Tak Kie and the curry vendor right across (Kari Lam) are Cantonese, Wong Fu Kie is Hakka, Nasi Ayam Hainam Apollo is Hainanese, and there's some Hokciu (Fuzhounese), Teochew, and Hui Chinese Muslim vendors as well. I'm a Cantonese and Teochew speaker myself. Thanks for visiting Jakarta's Chinatown 🙏

    I will tell you what i know about indonesian food:
    1. There are several style of bakmi around indonesia, and it concentrated in java, sumatera and kalimantan.
    2. Bakmi in kalimantan and sumatera (ponti, medan and bangka are the most famous style) are often and mostly using drizzle of lime juice and blanched bean sprout, meanwhile in java they dont do that, but if they stated bakmi bangka, bakmi medan or bakmi ponti while they're located outside their area, thats another story.
    3. Bakmi is originated as a chinese cuisine, and longtime ago, the chinese descendants that had migrated here had a competition for chinese food, then the descendants from jakarta won the category for bakmi when dimsum category won by descendants that lived and came from west java, therefore you will see "siomay bandung" is one of our extremely famous food.
    4. Afaik, red yeast called angkak, can be used both for food and medicine
    Try more indonesian food, but stay safe and stay home for now, so we can fight this pandemic together 🤔

    That pork patty with fermented pickle and the eel have to be eaten with rice. That reason why the taste is a bit overpowering is because they are not meant to be eaten plain. Rice serves as a neutralizer.

    Appreciate your honest opinion, guys. I'm not a big fan of those "confinement food" for new mothers either, but I'm glad that you guys are always game. I get annoyed that our neighbors in Malaysia and Singapore look down on our Chinese Indonesian food, but what they don't understand is that we have different influences (Hakka, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, etc, as well as local culinary traditions) that might not suit their tastes but it doesn't mean that it's bad; it's just different. Again, kudos for being honest as I know you guys know your Chinese food. 👍🏽

    • @liongkienfai104
      @liongkienfai104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Too much negativity and lack of understanding from our neighbours. But also I think a lot of locals don't understand the 'asal-usul' and extent of Chinese Indonesian food either.

    • @arivanuaranu
      @arivanuaranu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@liongkienfai104 that's true. We'd even argue among ourselves on who has the best Chinese food. I know for a fact that many people from Borneo look down on the Chinese food found in Java. Even though I'm from Borneo myself, I can still appreciate the many varieties of Chinese Indonesian food wherever I go, whether it is in Bangka-Belitung, Singkawang, Semarang, or Makassar. Why argue about khew nyuk/babi hong when we should just enjoy them all indiscriminately?

    We just arrived back from Jakarta a week ago! I have to say that the Indonesian people are truly beautiful and kind people. They were very helpful and polite. Jakarta itself needs more investment to make conditions better, especially for the poor. The food we tasted was lovely, although I prefer the food of Malaysia. However, we did have some incredible dishes like sucking pig, and various incredible noodle dishes. Love to Indonesia. Please stay safe. Errol.

    That wasn’t water spinach (morning glory) in any of the noodle dishes. It’s choy sum. Also, did you mean jicama (hick-ah-ma) in the fried noodles? The steamed pork on preserved vegetables is supposed to be eaten with rice to cut the saltiness and bold fermented flavor of the veg.

    Not every green is water spinach !! Most probably NOT in your particular case, because water spinach is seldomly used to accompany Chinese noodle dishes due to their taste mismatch. My guess is more like Chinese broccoli (Kai-lan) or choy-sin, which are more frequently used in Chinese noodle dishes.

      There is an ice stall near Tak Kie Coffee shop. The only ice vendor in that area if I'm not wrong. You should try Macapuno Coconut Ice. We call it Kelapa Kopyor or Kelapa Puan. Ask the vendor to add a little salt. He knows how much salt he has to add to the ice. It's very delicious and tasty. I love that ice, I've had it since I was a little.

    Dumpling is very very expensive, almost HKD24/10 PCS. I guess the average salary of local Indonesian is about HKD2000-3000/MONTH, how they can afford such sky price dumpling.
