DPP, My parents are from Maharastra but I grew up in a small town in Karnataka. I went to an English school (St. Joseph's) and studied Kannada and Hindi. I speak Marathi at home. I used to read Marathi newspapers at home too. Mujhe Hindi aata hai. Mala Marathi aate re. LOL Nanage Kannada barathe. I took up French in my 11th and 12th grade (year) of school. I currently live in Chicago and am learning Spanish.
That is just amazing. She speaks it with such comfort and ease! And I didn't even understand the entire conversation. Lol. I wish I knew Hindi just as well as her. Great job, my friend!
She's learning Dravidian!!!!! the toughest languages on Earth But her Hindi doesn't help in speaking Kannada and Tamil . She has to twist her tongue to learn Kannada and Tamil. We speak hindi with our mother tongue and we have diverse languages and most of south Indians speak Hindi, mother tongue and some other south Indian languages too..... Since we have a tough Classical language , we can easily pronounce many words easily than Northees. Not all Indians speak English and not all south Indians are good at English . I have heard many dialects of English being created in South India.....lol

Dravidian is far more different than Indo-European ,Logically English is derived from European languages .Hence you people must be able to speak good English than us. In Hindi "R" is pronounced in a way that it almost sounds like "D" eg. Ghar -Ghad. so I think that's the reason some Northees can't speak good English.

The effect is we see a large number of 'English medium' schools thriving all over. On the other hand although Hindi is a National Language, it is introduced into the school's curriculum only as a second language in South Indian schools (local language being primary). So, kids don't obviously pick it up as much as they pick up english. Who took it upon themselves to promote Hindi in South India? Nobody. All the politicians are busy with their own selfish priorities. That is one side of it. The other side of it is, when there is a language barrier for communication, if english is getting the job done why would anyone struggle to learn Hindi? However, because of Bollywood and Television, Hindi also is thriving in South India...Andhra is big time Hindi...almost everyone knows it atleast to a certain extent. I know Tamil Nadu has some politics incorporated into not promoting Hindi, but people of Karnataka also use Hindi to a considerable extent. Kerala of course is a gone case...it has been Christianized, so no hopes there.

kannada,hindi are beautiful languages. hindi is so much easy but kannada is little bit tough language and sweet also. I like kannada because its grammar is more thicker than dictionary book.

I've been trying to learn chinese since one year since I study in china and I know how hard it can be to learn a foreign language. south indian languages can be especially hard for westerners. My heart skipped a beat or two after hearing how fluently she can speak hindi! I'm sure a lot of Indians cannot speak hindi as good as her. This has definitely inspired me to ace chinese haha! Thanks for the inspiration zoe! Extra love for learning my mother tongue kannada!♥♥
