  • In this week’s video, I present 5 Hong Kong podcasts you should check out! A lot of young overseas Chinese (me included) speak Cantonese mainly with their parents and older relatives. But you also need to hear younger voices if you want to improve! Please share the video with your friends who will find it helpful and let me know in the comments if I forgot your favorite podcast!

    Don't worry if you don't get everything at first. You should watch each video multiple times until you can follow along without the English subtitles and write down any words you are struggling with. Over time, you'll piece everything together the same way you did with your native language. My goal is to build a complete Cantonese immersion course that will get you to the conversational level. So stay tuned for the next video!

    Your channel's a gem! My mom's side of the family speaks Cantonese but I never really picked it up beyond very simple words and phrases. I'm happy to at least be able to listen and understand most of it, and podcasts sound like another great resource.

    Thankyou for putting this together!! I've been looking for cantonese podcasts to listen to for so long! I watch a lot of cantonese TH-camrs like Pomato, Mario Hau etc but a lot of these channels have edited videos and you need to watch the screen to really understand what's going on. Podcasts enable me to do other things while listening to the audio and it still making sense haha!
    Thank you again for this great video - new subscriber :)

    I love listening to your Cantonese, with very clear/ clean pronunciation. I'm Malaysian-Chinese, I speak Hakka-Cantonese (meaning with Hakka accents) with my family. I moved to US 20 + years ago, with no real Cantonese dialog. I have some improvements when I start watching Hong Kong films/ drama TVB again. Your channel is great for me to improve my Cantonese.

    Just stumbled across your channel and its the best of its type, hands down. Thanks for your work towards reconciling and facilitating the needs of foreign born Chinese with Hong Kong roots in regaining their identity. I am a middle aged BBC who thought that I would be a "banana" for eternity. Thanks to you, you have given me an opportunity to regain my heritage and find my true self. :)

    Thanks for the links. This is quite challenging for me, to hear Cantonese without the subtitles. I sampled the 5 links, the first 3 were women, and last two were men. The first woman sounds young and mixes Cantonese with English, which is common, but she spoke too fast. The next two women seemed older but were very articulate, spoke only Cantonese and at a good pace that I could understand. The men were ok but not as clear as the two women. I agree that this is good training.

    Another podcast I strongly recommend is Denise Ho(何韻詩)'s 菇武門 podcast!!!! Interestingly she is a Hongkonger who had spent some years in Canada, so some CBCs out there may relate to her experiences. This weekly podcast is so funny, although Cantonese newbies may find it slightly difficult to comprehend at first as she talks with a conversational pace and her voice sometimes overlaps with the co-host/guest:P

    • @cantobritt
      @cantobritt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, I’ve listened to her podcast as well! She also has a YT channel where she has her podcasts recorded which is great to see facial expression.

    Btw i really appreciate your channel since I’m also a cantonese speaking individual in a western country with only familiy to speak cantonese to.

      @cantobritt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't say these are for beginners, especially if you're just looking to learn passively. A couple of them may be used by beginners if you listen carefully, pause, rewind, and search words, but that definitely requires more work and attention!
