    Easy Languages is an international video project aiming at supporting people worldwide to learn languages through authentic street interviews and expose the street culture of participating partner countries abroad. Episodes are produced in local languages and contain subtitles in both the original language as well as in English.

    Remarks/Explanations on subtitles:
    0:42 & 0:47 - O2 & A1 - It is a super common way to answer the question “What is your relationship status?” among the new generation in Hong Kong. The Alphabetical part refers to the current state of the person, A = alone /available, O = occupied, C = complicated. While the numerical part indicates how many times has the person been into romantic relationships. For example, O2 = occupied, currently in the second relationship; A1 = available, with one previous romantic relationship.
    06:56 - 小孩子才做選擇 - This sentence literally means “Only the kids choose”. It has turned into a popular slang among Hong Kong and Taiwan in recent years. The sentence我全都要is quoted in Gau ban ji ma goon: Bak min Bau Ching Tin, which is a Hong Kong film with Stephen Chow in the cast. This sentence literally means “I want (them) all”. Anyway,「小孩子才做選擇,我全都要」has already become a popular slang in Hong Kong.
    07:59 - 出到pool - 「出pool」is a common phrase describing the fact that you have found someone, or you are no longer single. That’s why you are “leaving the dating pool”.
    08:33 & 09:58 - 加油 - “Add Oil” is a very iconic “Hong Kong English” expression to encourage someone. In 2018, “add oil” was made an official term in the Oxford English Dictionary.
    08:38 & 09:35 - 食檸檬 - This phrase/slang literally means “eat lemon”. You are asking for something, but they just give you a lemon, especially the lemon is too sour, which means you are getting rejected.

    I'm still watching all of these videos on repeat in 2024, thanks so much for making them. There are so few videos with beginner-friendly Cantonese subtitles.

    This interviewer was more interested in flirting than anything else, and that was funny! It made me (someone who has zero interest in Cantonese) pay attention to every sentence.

      O = Occupied (in a relationship)
      A = Available (single)
      And the numbers indicate how many relationships one have had before.
      So e.g. A1 = now Available and had 1 relationship before.

      There are already 300,645,876 videos about/in/featuring or teaching Japanese on TH-cam, weeb. Cantonese has far less material easily available. Also, just because it's Asian doesn't mean it's their choice on what language to focus on? Weird.

    • @zwelp982
      @zwelp982 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henriashurst-pitkanen8735 Okay? All I did was request for more videos in a specific language for this LANGUAGE channel(not cantonese only but a LANGUAGE CHANNEL) because I liked the way they presented it. Weeb is not even an insult but I can call you a pathetic nerd for literally being pathetic enough to research all this to reply to me. Next time please don't harass or reply to people just because you have nothing better going on in your boring life.
