When I was younger, I was really into cantopop and I found that learning to sing the songs can be done without knowing the actual characters. After learning the song, then it's really easy to look at the lyrics and learn a ton of Chinese characters at the same time. Of course, even cantopop lyrics are usually in standard Mandarin instead of vernacular spoken Cantonese, but it's still useful. Another place I learned a lot is from Chinese menus since I already knew the Chinese names of the dishes so reading those helped me pick up those characters.

This is amazing in general! I’m working on improving my Cantonese. I’ve noticed that if I just try a little every day it is better than not trying. Can you do a video on the cantonese movies on prime and Netflix etc? And cantonese dubbed anime sounds interesting, can you talk more about that too?

I love these tips!!! They're so great!!! I also like to think in Cantonese. For instance, I might wake up in the morning and feel really tired, so instead of thinking to myself, "I'm so tired," I will think, "Ngo hou goi." Given that people on average have hundreds to thousands of thoughts a day, this can add up pretty quickly haha

Really cool how you use Jyutping to type and learn new vocab
I was a bit hesitant on learning it at first because none of my HK friends or mainland Cantonese friends type in Canto that way. They use Quick or PinYin. But it was the best decision I ever made as a heritage speaker

Great tips. I learned most of my Cantonese through watching HK movies. I would watch the movie or play the DVD in the background as I did other things to listen and improve my vocabulary. Ironically, my improved conversational Cantonese landed me a job at a US based HK movie distributor 20 years ago. I learned a bit of Taishanese from watching Karl Maka :P.

Watching and listening are nice, but it's a pain when you can't understand a word and you have to constantly look it up on Pleco. What helps is to watch something with English subtitles. Then you won't have to look it up.

Hey Brittany, what's your workflow in creating Cantonese subtitles/documents? So far, I end up having to open up chrome and use the Google Input tools extension with the Cantonese package... Then import those into whatever non-chrome software/documents.
This takes a lot of time, so I was wondering if you found a workaround to natively install Cantonese to your pc 🤔
