We have a brand new Dometic like yours in our horse trailer that's been leaking since day one. Took it back to the dealership and they calmed to have fixed it, they didn't, and it still leaked. Just picked up the exact same parts for the repair, thank you for showing all of us how to preform the repair.
You're welcome Rick, the toilets are pretty basic and easy to work on. Nice video, Michael! I've replaced the gasket in our 320 when it stopped holding water after about a year. Used the inexpensive generic gaskets, and it took two attempts to get it to hold water, but it finally did. Think I'll go with the Dometic next time - and follow your example of regularly maintaining the silicone grease. Thanks for the video - it really is an easy job.
That's a bummer the generic seal gave you trouble. I think I'm going to reapply the silicone grease to the ball side of the seal every 6 months or so so I maintain a good seal. Thanks so much for your compliments and for watching

@@thetraveltrailerguy yes, I tried to clean everything including the old seal, didn’t help. I just put a new one on this morning and alls good. I just noticed my other toilet is leaking very slowly. That toilet is only about six months old. I’m going to try to clean that one. Hope that works. Thanks again for your video!
We replaced our toilet several years ago with this great unit. It flushes SO much better than the stock one that came with our trailer. But, due to the hard water situation we have here in NV, and the really bad water we get when down in Quartzsite AZ, coupled with the crappy water we had down in Houston, TX where we were stuck for eight months (for medical treatment), the toilet started leaking. It would NOT hold water. I bought this seal and planned on a simple replacement project. Well, following the instructions that came with it (the official Dometic seal), I just could not get it in place. The directions say to add the silicone/Vasaline AFTER you have the seal in place. Naturally I came to the college of TH-cam for advice. You showed applying the 'grease' before installing the seal, which makes perfect sense. C'mon Dometic, step up your instructions! Anyway, the seal practically slid into place with very little effort. Thank you so much, Michael. You da man . . . ! Oh, and the Dometic seals are really spendy but I figured they would fit better, and I bought locally. I'd rather support a local business than mega-giant Amazon even though they are cheaper. Incidentally, while on our stay in Houston we bought a portable water softener (like many of the other residents of the RV park we stayed in) and fell in love with it. I'm hoping with the elimination of the calcium deposits this softener promises, we won't have to replace this seal for eons now. I also expect to see no more white calcium deposits on all our water fixtures. We liked our soft water experience down there SO MUCH, we just had a water softener installed in our house two days ago.
Thanks for the feedback, I sure apricate it and you schooling me on the hardwater and what you did to resolve it. I hope all the medical issues were taken care of.

Hi Mike- I just learned that the “ball “ pivots at 2 points: “3” & “9” o’clock. Occasionally one pivot connection will get knocked out... resulting in water loss like you experienced. With the ball in the closed position, check to see if it is centered. Yours appeared to show more black seal on the left. Typically this indicates the ball has become “unhooked” on the side with the greatest amount of black rubber seal showing: in your case the “9” o’clock position. The ball can be snapped/clicked back into place easily while holding the ball fully open. Reach thru opening and pop it back. (Most common reason it comes loose is bumping it with a tank rinse tool that was passed thru the toilet to “rinse” the black tank or similar tool/accessory). Hi Always use NON-PETROLIUM lubricant on rubber seals. Great video... liked your technique on “new” seal install.
Thank you @William Ruddell What a great observation, our RV is new, and has less than 1 season on it, and it just doesn't make sense the seal would be bad already! My seal looks off center just like in the video, and ours leaks pretty fast. I will certainly investigate the ball valve placement before buying a new seal. Thanks again, Happy Camping!!

Thanks for watching and your question Brooke. Yes it is important to apply silicone grease on the seal as I did in the video. What it does is keep the seal lubricated so it does not dry out, this helps the rubber stay pliable to maintain a good seal so water will stay in the toilet bowl. If the seal is not maintained with silicone grease it will dry out and its possible sewer gasses may sneak by it in smell up your RV. Also its important to remove the seal from time to time to clean the area the seal comes in contact with, inspect the seal for damage, and reapply more silicone grease. If that's a rubber seal, I wouldn't use Vaseline. Petroleum products cause rubber to swell, which could perpetuate a leak. Stick with the silicone and save the headaches. You can also get silicone grease at a home improvement or hardware store. You might compare prices to make sure Dometic isn't jacking the price as an "RV specific" product.

I"m on my third seal ( trailer is a 2023) why is the seal leaking after only a few months. I think it"s time for a diffrent brand toilet. Also my seal is not going in that easy.
What brand of seal are you replacing the failed one with? Some people have said they have used the less expensive one and it will leak, but switching to this one like I used in the video works. Dometic (385311658 Flush Ball Seal Kit - amzn.to/3cwDmux Here's some things you can do if you haven't done so already: 1) Remove the seal and examine very closely in the toilet where the seal seats in place and where it can rub against and make sure the surfaces are completely clean, if not water will leak by. Tip: push the pedal down while inspecting for debris, there could be stuff hiding in crevices that need to be cleaned. Then examine the gasket very closely to make sure it is smooth (If not wipe it down with a cloth and silicone grease to clean the area and hopefully smooth out the rubber). Also check for any damage on the seal 2) Check the Toilet Flush Ball amzn.to/3SVOzLc to make sure its clean and is aligned so it will seal against the rubber seal. 3) Make sure you using plenty of the silicone grease on the seal and reapplying it if you feel the seal is drying out?

Thank you Michael... we are doing this in a week! HOPING the old one just needs cleaned. But we have our backup!

Hi Mike-
I just learned that the “ball “ pivots at 2 points: “3” & “9” o’clock.
Hi
Always use NON-PETROLIUM lubricant on rubber seals.
Thanks again, Happy Camping!!

www.thelubricantstore.com/rubber-seal-compatibility-chart
Is the silicone grease absolutely necessary? I got the new seals in but didn't know I needed silicone grease.

Here's some things you can do if you haven't done so already:
1) Remove the seal and examine very closely in the toilet where the seal seats in place and where it can rub against and make sure the surfaces are completely clean, if not water will leak by.
Also check for any damage on the seal
2) Check the Toilet Flush Ball amzn.to/3SVOzLc to make sure its clean and is aligned so it will seal against the rubber seal.
3) Make sure you using plenty of the silicone grease on the seal and reapplying it if you feel the seal is drying out?

I bought a dometic toilet, within a few months the flush system failed, shortly after that the spout on the cassette fell off and went down the sewage dump point. The slide on the toilet is always very stiff and I'm worried it's going to snap, ill be in trouble if that happens, Always trying to lubricate the mechanism but it doesn't help, won't be able to use it, having enough trouble repairing the issues now. Contacted dometic and they didn't seem to give a dam about the problems. Looks like i may have to throw this $700 one out and buy a decent toilet.

Wow!!! thanks for watching and sharing your story. www.youtube.com/@thetraveltrailerguy/videos
you said 'or vaseline' but the comment above says not to
Go catch Chris, I made the mistake of saying Vaseline and unfortunately You Tube will not let me change my video. Do not use Vaseline
@@thetraveltrailerguy thanks. I was almost going to buy a new toilet until I saw this. I was under the impression the seal couldn't be replaced from up top. Mine leaks intermittently, and especially if I forget to keep it wet when in storage and it's hot and the water evaporates.
@@3oldman Before buying a new gasket remove your old one like I did in the video and clean all the surfaces really good including the gasket, then apply the silicone grease amzn.to/3vqUSJ3 to the old gasket if you see no damage to it, reinstall it and see how long it holds water. If it starts leaking again I would buy a new gasket. amzn.to/3cwDmux
@@thetraveltrailerguy I dumped more water in the bowl and after a few gallons it's finally holding. I've ordered new seals for when it gives up. I got a tip about using white vinegar to help the seal work, but I'm not sure that does anything at all.
@@3oldman Good, I still would put silicone grease on the seal to help keep it moist and increase the sealing between the two surfaces. I've never heard about using white vinegar for rubber seals but jut found this searching the internet - Does white vinegar damage rubber seals?
"Vinegar is sometimes used as a fabric softener or for getting rid of stains and odors in laundry. But as with dishwashers, it can damage the rubber seals and hoses in some washing machines to the point of causing leaks."
