    We have the same issue and are in the process of fixing the toilet. Please explain in layman's terms what causes this issue. Also, Please let me know if this fix has worked for you for 2 years since you posted the video. If its not a permanent fix, which toilet would you recommend in place of the Dometic 300?

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Let me answer your three questions in reverse. Dometic has a toilet (model 310) with a ceramic bowl that does not have the same issue as the model 300. I would upgrade to this model but do not have enough room between the back of the toilet and bathroom wall. If memory serves, you need 10.5” from the bolts on the toilet base and the back wall to upgrade. Q2: the fix has worked well long term and highly recommend doing it before installing a new 300 toilet. Q1: I only have theory why the issue occurs as Dometic is not inclined to reveal why the problem happens. My take is that a vacuum suction occurs at the seal between the inner and outer plastic bowls when getting up off the toilet. Over time, this becomes worse and more liquids are pulled into the outer bowl. Hope this helps!

    I wish I had the ability to communicate with words just how wonderful and relatable this video is. I live in an RV and there is much to love, but being forced to become an expert and diagnose and fix your own rv issues because of failures of sellers, companies, and repair people is not my favorite part of RVing. This is just so relatable. It is so noble of you to make this video to help others. Thank you.

    I am going to try this! Our brand new toilet has smelled from day one! We call our trailer our Covid trailer! They got a kittle break in this terrible time and fast tracked trailers on back order to survive the pandemic. I didn’t blame them for this, but oh the problems we have had! We gave up calling for warranty issues and began fixing things ourselves. We love, love, love, our trailer, but it has been disappointing in some areas. I believe you just helped us with the most embarrassing problem! Thank you so much!

    First off, thank you SO much for producing this video. Your step-by-step guide is excellent. Been chasing the strong same smell for the last several trips. Just removed our 300 prior to seeing this video and low and behold, the gap between the two bowls is FULL of stinky sewage. It is completely unconscionable that Dometic has produced such a piece of garbage that would allow leakage like this. Indicative of the RV industry as a whole.

    Great video! Great advice! We've been chasing down this exact problem for several years and, as soon as I watched this, I was pretty sure this was our exact problem. Your instructions were great and the disassembly was pretty easy. The re-assembly was aided greatly by using the Ace Hardware 10-in-1 multi-tool (2 of them) to put together to fasten the FOUR hex-head screws. You mentioned that an extra-long screwdriver should be used, but I found using the 5/16" hex driver on the multi-tool worked MUCH better! There's no slipping out of the slot then as you would have with a straight screwdriver. We've been out on several camp ventures since applying your fix... and regular inspections appear to show it's 100% solved! Thanks so very much for your great video.

    First trailer, 2022 model brand new, first campaign trip, 5 people. The second day there is a faint smell. I thought the kids were being messy, third day it got worse. I chased it down to a pool of yellow liquid inside with flashlight and an awkward angle in the back. Googling the problem, got me to your video. Going home tomorrow, will try your solution fix. Thank you so much for posting the step-by-step process. It's a shame what the industry has become. Every RV line and product has issues. Sadly, all made in America, and nobody cares. Poor production process, no quality control.

    Excellent video!
    We purchased a used 2020 Cherokee Grey Wolf Limited camper that’s in great condition.
    After the second outing, I could no longer handle the smell. It smelled like a stadium urinal.
    I did remove the toilet and sure enough there was sewage build up. The manufacture label on the toilet was 6/4/2019.
    I did attempt to seperate the bowl from the base but ended up cracking it.
    Subsequently, I replaced the toilet with the 310 model.
    I also want to mention that the manufacturer did not have the flange which was broken screwed into the floor. The flange was seated onto a metal ring that was screwed to the floor by two screws which held the T bolts.
    I replaced the flange as well which I attached to a pvc pipe which was inserted into a rubber gasket that lead to the black tank.

    Great information. I’ve been dealing with this problem for 4 years always thinking the problem was in the holding tank. I thought maybe the toilet was not tight enough to the flange. When I attempted remove the caps I leaned on the toilet seat and notice drips coming out between the two sections of the toilet. That’s when I started looking for solutions to the problem and was lucky enough to find your video. I think I will apply some some silicone to the bigger seal as well. Thank you for your great video

    Thank you for this "How To" video. We have a 2018 Winnebago Micro Mini that has/had the Dometic 300 and it developed the problems you described. I contacted Dometic, and they declined to replace the unit as it was outside the "warranty period". I did 2 things:
    1 Purchased, and installed, the Dometic 310. It mounts VERY close to the wall, but it fits and is a much nicer toilet.
    2 I went through your repair/rebuild steps. (We now have a spare should the 310 develop the problem as well)
    I noticed a couple of differences with mine.....
    There was only one ring between on the sleeve between the internal and external bowls. The ring on mine is the thicker ring that is shown in your video.
    There was obvious leakage through the seal between the outer bowl and the base....the seal you did not use the silicone seal on.
    Before sealing the locations, I pulled the flush ball seal, thoroughly cleaned it, liberally coated all surfaces, in the groove and top and bottom surfaces, with silicone dielectric grease, and installed the flush ball seal back in the outer shell. I did this to prevent any squeeze-out of the silicon seal/caulk that I LIBERALLY applied on the internal rings and the external gasket from sticking to (or interfering with the flush ball seal.....there is very little clearance between the seal and the shells)
    Oh, one other thing I did differently, I took the water flush valve out of the base. Doing so made it easy to haul each half to the water hose for rinsing and turning things around to better clean without having to wrestle both shells.

    • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sounds like you did a very thorough job. Good call on upgrading to the 310 model as I haven’t heard of the same issue with the 310. It also sounds like the newer 300 models may have a thicker gasket. Not sure it will make a difference on the issue. The fix as shown has worked well over the long haul. All the best!

    Thanks for the video. We just completed an outing with our 2020 Puma and noticed a strong urine smell at the beginning of the trip. We found your video and did indeed determine the 'outer' area was full of urine that has seeped through the seal. We were able to soak up a lot of the urine and then poured vinegar in the area to counter the smell while we completed our trip. I will follow your video this week to hopefully correct the problem as you have shown. It is frustrating that this model of toilet has such a problem. Last year I had seen issues with this toilet and some mention of a recall but after calling Dometic they said there was no recall and could only be replaced under warranty. Since we did not have the problem then we could not get it replaced. We are now out of warranty, but hey such is the life with an RV. Thanks again.

They are sending me a new 300 model but will not arrive until September. However, if they have not changed anything with the design then it will still have the same issue I assume. I just did same repair but also used plumbers tape . Directly on plastic bowls and then slid on the gaskets with silicone. As a note there was only 1 gasket on the neck of the inner bowl . Once everything was put together I could tell it was very snug and much more so compared to when I took the 2 bowls apart . Once out together I noticed while looking into bowl of toilet a small gap between the flush valve and upper bowl so I used addition silicone all around the base of the flush valve . I’m headed to Yellowstone hope this repair holds up !

I myself just started having this issue about 4 weeks ago and I had no idea what the smell was until typing in specific wording into google and boom there was my problem. I cleaned non stop thinking kids were missing the toilet and yet it still stunk. so I have a 2019 Keystone and in May 2023 we found this problem. I bought a new Dometic 300 (only one that fits with the wall clearance) and installed it. 8 nights of camping later the smell is back. Called Dometic and they will replace it under warranty and continue to replace it for 2 years from my original purchase date; so if you buy a new one SAVE YOUR RECEIPT. I had a long chat with a second tier support person. They are aware of the problem and are actually trying different gasket materials but she said just keep my receipt and if it leaks let them warranty it. I am going to try this repair on the 2023 model that I just replaced and keep it as a backup for when my two years is up. • @JohnMarucci
      @JohnMarucci  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can replace the 300 model with the 310 ceramic bowl model, it may be worth it. The main issue is you need more clearance behind toilet to accommodate the larger size 310 model. The rough in measurement goes from 8.5" to 10" from the 300 to the 310 model, so be sure you have this amount of space from the center bolts to the wall behind the toilet. My Dometic 300 toilet only had the thicker seal in that area. I did not have the o-ring type seal in that area. I slid thicker seal back on and applied Lexan caulk in that area along with applying it on bottom and top side of the foam gasket that seals pedestal to bowl area.

      Sounds like a good fix. Hopefully you won’t ever have the issue. Thanks!

    How do you know what Dometic model toilet you have? Where is the model number?

      I just looked at mine and couldn’t find a sticker. My 300 has a plastic bowl. If it has a ceramic bowl likely it is a 310.

    Thanks for the video. We have a 310 that is leaking at the base and Dometic informs me since we are the second owner there is no warranty. Very bad design, very common problem, and no support from the manufacturer. They should have a class action lawsuit filed against them.

      Glad I could help. Dometic has done poorly by its customers generally imo.

    Because of the urine odor in my TT purchased in 7/2021, I removed my toilet today and disassembled it as shown in this video. There was a significant amount of stinking liquid in the outer bowl. I dumped the liquid, cleaned the inside of the outer bowl and outside of the inner bowl. My toilet had a clear seal and a black seal instead of two black seals which I guess won’t make any difference.? Toilet Manufacture date was 5/12/21. I’m going to apply the silicon caulk to the seals and reassemble it. Hopefully this will fix the situation since we’re going on a 3 1/2 week trip in two weeks! I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

      Hopefully it will work well long term. The fix done in the video has held up well for me. All the best!

      @@JohnMarucci I haven’t been able to see about urine leaking since it’s just sitting under the shelter but now it won’t hold water. Maybe I didn’t get a sufficient amount of silicone caulk or somehow gaps were left. ?? The clear seal is more of a plastic ring. It seems that a better seal would be made if the rubber seals were up against the plastic ring. I.e., not two flexible seals up against each other. Any thoughts?

      Sounds like possibly it may not have been reassemble properly? Maybe try it again?

      @@JohnMarucci good news! We called Dometic. The customer service lady was well aware of the issue and was very helpful.
      Since they’re out of the 300’s we’re getting a 310 at no charge! May not be here before we leave for the long trip so I’ll have to make sure I get this fix to work for the trip. That’s ok there!

    I just got home from a four day camping trip of blaming the kids the whole time on missing the toilet. Your video is spot on with the issues I’m having. Smell starts off faint and now it is horrible. Like you said no sewage smell just urine. Hopefully I can get this fixed because we have a lot of trips planned!

      I used my trailer for well over 100 days after the fix depicted in this video with zero odor issues. So far, so good. Thanks!
