  • This year my friend ‪@Italiansupercarvideo‬ and I saw this Matra MS650 at two historic racing weekends by Peter Auto: the 2022 Mugello Classic and the 2022 Dix Mille Tours at Circuit Paul Ricard. Unfortunately most of the footage is from the cold and rainy Mugello weekend as at Paul Ricard we only managed to record that initial warm up procedure after which the car had to withdraw from the event due to technical problems.
    When the first MS650 made its competition debut at Le Mans, in June of 1969, Matra had only been in the automobile industry for a couple of years but already made a name for itself both in sports car racing and in Formula 1. Its name is an acronym for Mécanique Aviation TRAction as the French company founded in 1946 initially specialized in aviation and aerospace products.
    For the 1969 Le Mans 24h, Matra designed two new cars, the MS640 and MS650, to replace the MS630. These cars complied with the Group 6 regulations, created for prototypes with displacement up to 3.0-litre. However during a private test the MS640 was destroyed in an accident that almost cost the life of the driver Henri Pescarolo and was never used in the race as Jean-Luc Lagardère, Matra's chairman, didn't consent to the construction of another example.
    The chassis of the MS650 was a tubular steel chassis on which a fiberglass, barchetta body was fixed. The suspensions were similar to those adopted by the MS80 used in Formula 1. Compared to the MS630, the curb weight dropped from 820 to 775 kg. The car was powered by a 3.0-litre V12 engine that was able to produce 410 hp at 9,800 rpm in its first 1969 version, reaching 430 hp at 10,500 rpm with the new MS12 introduced in 1970.
    The MS650 was built in only three examples, with chassis numbers MS650-01, MS650-02 and MS650-03. During the last couple of years, the EPAF company in France have built several replicas using the original drawings and original Matra staff. These 'continuation cars' were sanctioned by Matra and even received official chassis numbers (to which the one in this video should belong, but I'm not 100% sure).
    Instead of retiring to the museum the three examples built at the end of the 1970 racing season, Matra decided to modify two of them to compete in the prestigious Tour de France Automobile, even if it was an unlikely car to compete in this type of event. Instead the 1970 edition was dominated by the two MS650s and the 1971 edition was again won by one of the two cars. Matra had no option to defend its crown in the following years as for 1972 the Tour de France was opened to production-based GTs and Touring Cars only.

    A Matra V12 at full chat is possibly the greatest sound in racing history.

    It looks cool and sounds incredible, but the best thing about it is the Tour de France Auto entry (hence the registration and fog lights). Imagine taking a WEC LMH car to a tarmac rally event, winning, and being able to drive home in it afterwards. The idea of that seems impossibly outlandish today. Nice race number, by the way.

    What an absolute beast that engine is. I can't imagine how hard it would be to tiptoe that car around a fully wet track like that. Matra seemed to always make fantastic-sounding engines, the ones they used in F1 sounded excellent as well.

      Absolutely agree with you, it's been almost ten years since my first time at the 24h of Le Mans and I couldn't agree more, the racecars sounds are the best way to fall asleep and wake up. My best memory would be the Corvette C7s that would shake the car passing nearby at full speed in the Hunaudières. A feeling deeply miss...

      @@kaspeer Yeah, the C7 was physical. You could feel them pound the ground on the way by. Loved watching them race at Lime Rock. I can't even imagine what it felt like seeing them at Le Mans where they had much more space to open up.

      @@spamcan9208 Yeah this was a great car, same for the Aston Martin of this era, you could literally feel them coming by, as you said it perfectly ! But, the best cars I've ever seen during the 24h of Le Mans were the 458 GTE and the 911 RSR GTE. Very different sounds but very distinctive !

    You make such good quality videos that I am disappointed when I watch any else's racing videos and they are shot mostly through chain link fences. You only seem to shoot through a fence or barrier to get a certain interesting corner/engine sound and then it is back to 180 degree pans following a great sounding car banging through the gears at high rpm. I enjoy the behind the scenes in the pits and when the car gets the go ahead from the race worker to enter the racetrack and puts it to the floor to get up to race speed. You also seem to take great care with the sound in your videos. I like the sound of a high revving engine but I especially like the sound when they are below their power band say coming out of a tight corner in too high a gear. The engine almost sounds angry and it is a prelude to when it finally gets into its power band and starts screaming again. I also appreciate when you continue to record the sound of the car and driver after they are out of the frame but we can still hear them standing on the gas down the back straight bending the tach needle in 5th and 6th gear. Great job, appreciated!

      @19Bozzy92  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks a lot for the very kind comment, Paul! Yeah generally when someone asks me what my channel is about I answer something like 'Motorsport and race cars'. Then after a couple of seconds I always correct myself and specify ''actually it's about car's sounds'' 😅 Since I started this adventure I've always given more importance to audio than to the actual video footage. I don't have a very professional recording equipment so quality could be even better, but little by little I noticed it has improved in the last 10 years 😏

    Ciao Bozzy, che suono meraviglioso, pieno di energia e leggermente più cupo di un V12 Ferrari. Ero a Monza nelle prove del Gp di F1 1973, la Matra aveva questo motore e guidava Cris Amon, però non potevo ricordarmelo, avevo circa 4 anni.. Complimenti a te e a Matteo per questo video! I’m sorry, but I’d place this engine’s sound even above the latest Pagani Huayra R. I know that’s an apples-to-footballs comparison, but this thing is so raw compared to practically all else.
    Sure a 917 or GT-40 are right there with it, but this one sings and screams all at once. Bravo!

    The Matra V12 makes one of the best sounds in racing history, but it's somewhat of an unknown manufacturer (for those who are not car savvy). The tone of it is piercing and thumping at the same time, really unique compared to a Ferrari or even Lamborghini.
    I wonder what's it like to drive one of those. It looks like the meanest go-kart with XXL wide tires, and with a V12 behind, it must be crazy!

    really interesting. It looks like the air intake faces rearward as far as I can tell, and the relatively quiet induction noise as the car is driving toward the camera suggests that might be true. All the fun sounds are after it passes by the camera.
