Like you I miss it....The Deltawing was never meant to please anyone with its appearance. It was an experiment in creating a lightweight highly aerodynamic and fuel efficient racing machine. Far from being a failure it ran strongly at Le Mans until a careless Toyota hit it. At Petit Le Mans the same year it finished 5th after being 3rd at one point. Sadly it never fulfilled the potential it was showing when Don Panoz took it over and ruined its looks with the coupe version.(The Nissan Zeod was a much nicer looking rendition of the concept). For me it made motorsport more interesting and I enjoyed following its trials and tribulations. It was a clever attempt at bringing some fresh ideas to the sport.
Agree. Also like the GTR LM Nismo. I've driven it in games and I don't like driving it, but from a uniqueness standpoint, it ticks the boxes. Looks pretty cool as well, probably the most unique looking LMP when it raced.
I miss it too. I remember one year they didn’t do the qualifying session at the Rolex 24 so they started 13th and within the first few hours Katherine Legge got the car all the way into the lead and then as soon as they swapped drivers their driver hit a PC car. Car was cool though.

Delta Wing with a roof, truly was ugly. But then again, there is something about roofless LMP/DP cars that is forever iconic and yet makes the cars just look better. But sometimes I guess you just have to take function over form. In the perfect world, we'd have both. But in the racing world, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I remember the first time I saw the Peterson/Lauda March 711 and wondering why somebody had decided to stick a surf board on the front of the car. It really was ugly. The fact that it was racing against what I still think is the prettiest F1 car of all time, namely the Lotus 72, just made it worse. Then there was the Eifelland Ford, designed by Germany's answer to Salvador Dali - Luigi Colani. It was so weird that you couldn't really say whether it was ugly or beautiful. There were different versions of it, but if you google for it you will find some weird pics.
In 2010 I saw the Delta Wing on display at IMS, & had a chance to talk to the designer, Ben Bowlby. As I had been a long-time attendee of the 500, I was among a handful of folks chosen at random to attend a question/answer session that day with Eddie Gossage (the long-time owner of Texas Motor Speedway) to get our thoughts on the upcoming (for 2012) series spec changes. Most folks were adamant that they did NOT want that "phallic symbol" - to put it in terms that will acceptable here - on wheels to be the next IndyCar!
I would also add the original AVS Shadow mk. 1 of 1970. A radical very low slung design, it had terrible teething problems in trying to cool the radiators mounted in the tail. Eventually they had to mount them in airflow above the rear deck, then added every enlarging wings to provide some downforce to the rear. They even tried a batwing design in later iterations of the small tired versions. It really looked so cool and unique in the Road and Track cover photo and drawing, but eventually had to evolve into much more of a full size more typical shovel nosed Can-Am race car, eventually becoming very successful as the Mk.III and UOP Shadow DN4, winner of the 1974 Can Am Championship.
The Panoz Abruzzi looks much, much better as a standard road car. The Caterham was a bold attempt to do something while having no money, it was radical and not the worst offender when it came to bad nose jobs that year.
i live close to Dallara’s US headquarters and they have a DP-01 in the lobby. you can see it from outside and the nose mouth thing sticks out really bad even from the street.
I think F1 cars have been ugly for decades. I don't know why they don't introduce underside aero again. The cars would be prettier and the racing would be closer as the "dirty air" effect would be nullified.

I'd add the Toleman TG184 to the list. It was a car that brought Ayrton Senna to the world's attention, but it was unspeakably ugly. It was a slab-sided monstrosity with louvered side-pods and 2 rear wings. There's a winner right there!

Lancia Delta S4 Technically amazing, ridiculously fast but pure function over form. The proportions are just wrong in my eyes, especially as it followed the genuinely stunning 037, and given how nice I think the road car Delta still is even now.
...and if we get to Group B, just look at the Audi Sport Quattro (esp without livery), which looks like just what it is, a Quattro forcefully shortened, all the proportions are wrong.
Metro 6R4 Anyone? Functional, fun, and even moderately successful, but pretty it most definitely is not. But the ugly cake for Group B surely must be awarded to the Citroen BX 4TC.
