I graduated this past school year, currently 18, unemployed, and enjoying it. I spoke to several recruiters over the past year. 17-18. I settled for the Army. 11-Bravo was the MOS I wanted to choose. Each recruiter had a forewarning for 11-B. I spoke to my family about my choice- My grandmother, my grandfather, my mother, and my father all sat crying while I broke the news. Infantry is not the way to go. The benefits sound nice at first, but once you look through the initial pep-talk from recruiters, the infantry is realistically the worst part, man. College credits, paid housing, paying off student loans, subsidized food, and health care aren't worth it, if you don't have a life necessary to utilize those benefits. I'm still enlisting though, the country needs people willing to lay down for freedom. I would be one of the willing. It's your choice ultimately, but given your family situation, I would probably lean towards something non-militaristic and stable.

Fallen soldier lyrics
The medal that his dad gave him
Tucked away in his duffle bag
He said don't wory about a thing, Paps
You'll be gettin' this when I'll get back
Walkin' down the road
Through the city on a routine patrol
Shots rang out and he hits the ground
Sergeant yells "Man down"
This is for the ones who ain't comin' back
Who fought for their country in Iraq
And they left their families at home
To come over here and die alone
I carried his coffin onto the plane
And gave a salute as they read off his name
We packed away that duffle bag
And the Silver Star that he got from his dad
There was one old man when we got off the plane
With no one there for him to greet
But the whole damn company shook his hand
We were brothers to the son he will never see
This is for the ones who ain't comin' back
Who fought for their country in Iraq
And they left their families at home
To come over here and die alone
This is for the ones who ain't comin' back
Who fought for their country in Iraq
And they left their families at home
To come over here and die alone
To all the veterans who fought for their country and to all the soldiers that is fighting for their country and to all the fallen soldiers.

I talked to 2 veterans today (one of them was from the 101st airborne) (I wear an army hat bc it's my dream to enlist when I turn 18) but they asked if I wanted to join and I said it's been my dream since my mom died and my father abandoned my siblings and I so one said I hope you don't wanna join the infantry and I said i either want to do that or be a mechanic and they seemed kinda sad/ disheartened but idk why. is the infantry a dead wish or something?
