I have this strong belief for a long time that Mvc1's assists were a decisive inspiration for the larger "1st party festivity" tone of Smash since Brawl and since they added trophies. It's a smart and efficient way to add more content, adding something to the actual gameplay, involving chars that might not be fit or worthy of a playable char role, and that adds value to chars/franchises that may be "forgotten". Kof 00 also had a Very similar approach with assists, and It was only done once in the series, and interestingly Very near Mvc1's release. It's a Shame that Capcom never went back to that system. This was a pretty slick nostalgia trip! Kudos for doing this much homework. One thing I believe would've been worthy of mention, was after Juggernaut and Magneto's appearances as NPC bosses in X-Men: COTA, they both became part of the playable roster in Marvel Super Heroes.
Pure is definitely one of the most cute Capcom characters in a whole lol She deserves more love, alongside her cat Fur and her two other friends (Wing the Warrior and Lyric the Priest)
Luis Reyes well, popularity and recognition are practically the defining reasons a character gets chosen for smash, aside from having a history with Nintendo. Not only have they never appeared on a Nintendo console, Pure and Fur come from an exclusively Japanese game, and if any non-japan audience actually manages to recognize them they’d have to remember them as just obscure assist characters. They never had a shot at even making mii costumes, let alone Fighters.
I never knew Anita was a playable character in marvel vs street fighter. Also Thors sprite from this game was used to make a mugen character Thor that plays just like a capcom made sprite.
I love that you took the time to make this. Learned a few new things, and still quite enjoy the stage variants from COTA. It was the beginning of how crazy Mahvel would get. 👍
@@Aztyph'Amingo' is actually from some Dreamcast rythm game called 'Samba De Amingo', but yes Abyss is also a original character, but obviously unplayable.

@@omegaslothman394 Yes i agree, It could have boosted Mvc3's crossover nature power. The right time to implement it was certainly in Mvc3, when the series got big. Also the general media capacity nowadays would allow them to put much more content compared to the cps arcade era.
This was very educational and I appreciate all the hard work you put into compiling this! Despite the wings on Michelle Heart I literally had no inclination to guess she's from Legendary Wings and actually is the lead character. The issue is in the NES release they portray her as a nameless man so that was always my only frame of reference having not really played the Arcade game much. Unknown Soldier was also tough because in the original game both men were more lean and triathlon looking while in MVC they made him more buffed.
Amazing work! Thanks for taking so much effort to do this - I never knew Anita was selectable in MSH, or perhaps I just forgot. Amazing amazing amazing!
Very informative... I did wonder where those unplayable characters came from, back in the arcades when internet isn't available yet, so it was pretty much impossible to know. Thanks for this and looking forward for more.
They wanted to include Speed Racer as well but they didn't because they couldn't think of moves for him. that's a shame...they could've taken the Jin Saotome/Captain Falcon route though...and his Level 3 could involve Spritle and Chim-Chim...
I would have loved to have speed racer and samurai pizza cats. Killed even. I'd still play that game till this day in all honesty. I heard something about dante and Phoenix Wright aswell. They went on to be in mvc though
@@neogenesis7706 I think Dante and Leon should've been in too. Especially Leon because he ALWAYS gets the shaft for crossovers despite being one of the most popular RE characters...
I figured I'd know all of these but there's some obscure stuff in here. Good work compiling it all. (Combos are sick too but that's a given since it's a Desk video.)
MvC was the reason why I know who US Agent is, then I read Infinity Gauntlet, and then I did my research. And it was a treat that mainstream audiences know who he is now thanks to Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Great video overall. I love video game history, and this gave me one of my all time faves.👍
Would have been nice but clearly they didn’t do it because they didn’t have the time. So they copied Wolverine instead. This game does not deserve critique for that, it’s still literally a fever dream of amazing character clashes that has not been outdone in the ~25 years since its release. 😵💫 I would aim the critique at the sequels AWFUL character rosters in failing to deliver these most of the wanted characters to this day. And instead having rosters filled with bland boring gunk.
Good Job on this!! Really brings back memories since I played a lot of those fighting back in the arcade and some Midnight Wanderers. Although I didn't know there are secret characters in Marvel Superheroes much less it was Anita!!
Steven W. Hunt yeah, he seemed to use the terms interchangeably... might be a cultural thing, i’ve seen some british and australian game journalists do that.
I've just come across this video now and holy shit this is dope! Well done Desk, it's something all MvC fans have wondered about through the years haha...now we have it :)
Technically, the "US Agent" uniform Cap wears in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is actually more of a Punisher-themed uniform (you can see the skull on his chest once he pulls back from the Charging Star attack)
Great video! The hard work you put into it really shows. I would say that the lack of Arthur, juggernaut, and magneto combos was kinda surprising though
Despite having a weak roster that has nothing on Namco X Capcom's. The assist characters is one of the best things that happened to this game which is what Capcom should've done for the previous Marvel vs. Street Fighter titles.
@@CrossoverGameReviews Yup, Capcom had ideas in NxC that should've been in early games that were too short and simple. Such as having strategy/tactical JRPG elements and having a story-mode. And yes they have the best moderate crossover roster in my opinion.
@@KenMasters. Capcom had nothing to do with NxC. It was made by Monolithsoft. The same Monolithsoft that makes the Xenoblade games and made the Project x Zone games which were sequels to NxC. NxC was also a turn-based SRPG with minimal sprite work so they can cram in as many characters as possible. Not at all comparable to a fighting game that needed thousands of sprites made for each character. MVC also only had a year or two of development and was limited by the CPS2 hardware it was made on. That's why they couldn't go beyond having around 15 playable characters for every MVC game they made on that hardware. It wasn't until MVC2 that they could put all the characters in the series into one game plus many new characters because they moved development to the Naomi hardware which was basically the arcade version of the Dreamcast.
I think this video just goes to show that Capcom's games history is so deep and crazy. They have so many deep cut characters that they can literally make their own fighting game that would just have nothing but THEIR characters in it, and it would be a large ass roster. LOL

And Magneto has been broken since the beginning. Hes a bitch of a final boss in COTA, and since he became playable, hes been nothing but trouble.
Pure is definitely one of the most cute Capcom characters in a whole lol
She deserves more love, alongside her cat Fur and her two other friends (Wing the Warrior and Lyric the Priest)
Well she got taken off the thumbnail for this video.
A shame none of them were remotely considered for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, let alone another Capcom fight game.
I always thought that Saki was from the Mega Drive game "Alien Storm". Her laser beam is the same from that game too
Same! I always thought she was that girl, despite of the different haircut
I love that you took the time to make this. Learned a few new things, and still quite enjoy the stage variants from COTA. It was the beginning of how crazy Mahvel would get. 👍
Thank you for this. Would love to see something similar for the characters in MvC2 that were oddities.
There's only one original character in MVC2 and it's Rubyheart. The end.
@@thefrankiepalmeri Three. Ruby Heart, Amingo, and Abyss.
and nobody cared about Thanos back then, but now he's a meme.
Unfortunately MvC2 Thanos is trash compared to MvCI Thanos
@@Aztyph'Amingo' is actually from some Dreamcast rythm game called 'Samba De Amingo', but yes Abyss is also a original character, but obviously unplayable.
@@thefrankiepalmeri _Samba de Amigo_ was developed by Sonic Team, not Capcom.
This video was amazing This is one of the videos missing in TH-cam thank you for all the research you've done great job.
Appreciate the effort, beautifully presented as ever, this was a great way to introduce players to the massive library of obscure but awesome Capcom characters, it was so hype to see the inclusion of Unknown Soldier back in the day, Forgotten Worlds remains the ultimate shmup! 😎👍🏼 Keep it up dood!!
They were pioneers on that. But now Smash has taken over the field. I wish a Future Mvc title could accomodate that old system somehow not conflicting with the modern Mvc2 assist concept. Content wise it's going to be very tough for any crossover fg to compete against Smash Ultimate, so Capcom will need to use all cool history fanservice at hand to their advantage.
Carlos Augusto All they have to do is listen to the fans, simples! 👍🏼 MVC3 was a near-miss classic imo, had a lot going for it, but a similar character cameo assist option could have made it nxt lvl 😋
16:01: Bert would have been too OP, that's why they scrapped him
Amazing work! Thanks for taking so much effort to do this - I never knew Anita was selectable in MSH, or perhaps I just forgot. Amazing amazing amazing!
Love the history lesson for my favourite fighting game series.
Long live MvC!
Very informative... I did wonder where those unplayable characters came from, back in the arcades when internet isn't available yet, so it was pretty much impossible to know. Thanks for this and looking forward for more.
Could you do a History Video in all the Tatsunoko vs Capcom Fighters?
Like how they almost had the Samurai Pizza Cats in the game, but I think European rights issues prevented it.
@@dcb99filmz Big facts!¡
This is so dope! Glad this popped up on my feed! Love the Marvel and Capcom Easter eggs/history on this vid. Keep creating great content 💯👊🏿
This was great. I’ve even learned somethings. Educational and entertaining. Nice.
Honestly I never knew I needed this video, but I've been wondering about most of these characters for so long.
If this video makes two things clear, it's Capcom has a lot of characters they just don't give a damn about and COTA is busted.
Nice detail and editing! (Now these characters just need some sequels. Midnight Wanderers, Forgotten Worlds...)
Putting _two_ Wolverines instead of adding Thor to the MvC2 roster was a crime against humanity.
Gee Logan, capcom lets you have TWO roster spots?
Or even a fully playable Jubilee. Or the Red/Hyper Venom, Orange Hulk etc there more former characters they could've added to MvC2 annoyingly
The Wolvy twins was reusing existing data, it would have taken longer to add one Thor than two Wolverines
Yet they have the time to create rubyheart and amingo but not add Thor and Jubilee @@docs.a.t.7161
Would have been nice but clearly they didn’t do it because they didn’t have the time. So they copied Wolverine instead. This game does not deserve critique for that, it’s still literally a fever dream of amazing character clashes that has not been outdone in the ~25 years since its release. 😵💫
I would aim the critique at the sequels AWFUL character rosters in failing to deliver these most of the wanted characters to this day. And instead having rosters filled with bland boring gunk.
I just LOVE Capcom history videos like this! Thanks for making it!
11:10 "Anita debuted in the 1995 BEAT EM UP Night Warriors..." You mean a fighting game right? Great vid anyways!
Europeans call fighting games "beat 'em ups".
Beat 'em ups are called "brawlers" there.
@@Mari_Izu thanks man I had no idea
@@Mari_Izumakes sense I guess. I believe Beat ‘em Ups are referred to as Belt Scrollers in Japan.
OH MY! Thanks for this! I almost forgot some of the special partners. I’m glad I saw this video and their origins. I would never forget this game.
Good Job on this!! Really brings back memories since I played a lot of those fighting back in the arcade and some Midnight Wanderers. Although I didn't know there are secret characters in Marvel Superheroes much less it was Anita!!
I'd think you of everyone would know the difference between beat-'em-ups and fighting games.
Steven W. Hunt yeah, he seemed to use the terms interchangeably... might be a cultural thing, i’ve seen some british and australian game journalists do that.
Final fight dude.
I'm here a year later to tell you some areas on the world call beat em ups brawlers and fighting games beat em ups
The amount effort put into this video is astounding. Great job man.
So much loved created by the creators back then ❤
I've just come across this video now and holy shit this is dope!
This video is beautiful, your editing skills are shining like crazy.
4:55 says Capcom America instead of Captain America
Great video! The hard work you put into it really shows.
I would say that the lack of Arthur, juggernaut, and magneto combos was kinda surprising though
Despite having a weak roster that has nothing on Namco X Capcom's.
The assist characters is one of the best things that happened to this game which is what Capcom should've done for the previous Marvel vs. Street Fighter titles.
Are you talking about the PS2 game? The one that came a decade after this one?
@@CrossoverGameReviews
Yup, Capcom had ideas in NxC that should've been in early games that were too short and simple.
@@mgbenz
What I was saying is that MvC1's roster is inferior to NxC's.
Man I've been looking for a video like this for a longggg time. I've always wondered about this stuff man. So on point and cool. Good job.
I think this video just goes to show that Capcom's games history is so deep and crazy.
They have so many deep cut characters that they can literally make their own fighting game that would just have nothing but THEIR characters in it, and it would be a large ass roster. LOL
That is exactly why Capcom is my second favorite video game company after Nintendo.
I especially appreciate the knowledge and skill displayed in both the gameplay and the editing in these videos. Thank you. Amazing!!
I'm really surprised Thor and Arthur didn't make it into mvc2
X-men was insanely popular at the time.
What a delicious devouring of data! Your hard work is excellent! I want to take you for a ride!
No joke. Tomichin looks like Bert if he were a character on Bob’s Burgers.
I always liked this Morrigan theme better than her original one. I wonder what made them decide to change it from her Darkstalkers theme.
The ‘US Agent’ Cap costume from UMVC3 isn’t a US Agent costume. It’s a Punisher one. Jus sayin.
this is absolutely amazing. thanks for the content dude, love your work.
Will look like saki from marvel vs capcom series that leaser beam awesome!
You choices for music are so damn beautiful and really they made me more invested in watching the video
4:54 Capcom America? Is that like Captain Commando America?
9:08 Looks like Cap and Thor are really enjoying each others company, if you know what I mean.
edit: Didn't mean to sound like a prick. Love your work Desk and it's clear a lot of work went into this!
Thank you so much for doing this video! I thought about doing this video YEARS ago when a friend and I were playing MvC1 and wondered who the hell were some of the assist characters! Admittedly, the quality of my video would've been ASS CHEESE compared to yours so I'm glad you actually put the time and research into it to make it right. Again, thank you so much for doing this!
Tomichin looks like Bert from Sesame Street 😂
I've only known about half of the characters on special assist. I would've have known them if not for this video. Please make more of these! Great content! 👌
Just imagine if these characters were playable.
Tomichin would have completely destroyed the game balance. His power is unbeatable.
Great video. One of my favorite fighting game series of all time. The quality shows. Lots of cool information. Thank you.
4:55 "Capcom America received a U.S. Agent costume" is that a typo?
Yep, it's "Captain America"
He received a costume of himself. That's the truth.
I tought it was a punisher cap costume, because of the skull in the chest. Maybe i'm wrong.
Captain america and US agent are two different marvel characters, there's also a marvel character called The Patriot. All of them dress the same.
No special agent is his brother
Psylocke, the only character on this list to actually have giggle physics. Kekw
Why'd you change the thumbnail? I liked Pure and Fur! 😄
This MIGHT be what Kameo kharacters will be like in Mortal Kombat 1. We'll know on June 8th.
the Shadow character looks like Nash from street fighter? his stance and moves look similar and Nash has his reasons to not want to be seen cuz his body is kinda discolored.
WolfOfMassDeath I was looking for this comment, isnt Nash a zombie? M. Bison kills him in a prequel game to the original Street Fighter.
Shadow is Nash (Charlie) but in a cyborg form. His ending in MSHvSF show that.
This is fantastic work as usual. Thank you for all the love and effort put into this video it will definitely go appreciated.
so basically, their mvc versions of smash bros assist trophies
If this is gonna become a new regular thing for you Desk. Please do more! Your combo videos are amazing but this shit is too! Love the change of pace especially since you know how to deliver well cut up together content and you deliver tons of fanservice and nerdy facts.
*0:10** You need more research. There's actually 22. I'm not gonna say who. This is my childhood so I know a lot.*
Get home from work, and get to see one of your best videos yet? Love it. Thank you, sir! A nice change of pace for sure.
Holy shit!! I never knew I wanted this video so bad
