Two legends car and driver. I saw him when I was a child on Sanremo rally in the '80s. I'll never forget this driver! I'll never forget Lancia! Proud to be born in Torino!
A friend of mine had told me of his trip to Finland for 1000 Lakes in 1985, and how you actually felt the cars coming, the roar and thunder in your chest, and the smell of cigarettes, race fuel, and smoking brakes. Must've been amazing. I wish I could've watched him drive in the Moroccan rally when he was driving the 124 Abarth.
Markku is one of my heroes. Such a talented man, and from his interviews he seems so kind and sincere. Blessed that he is still with us, and can share his experiences of the Group B era.
Quick translation for non-baguette language: It's a great report on this legendary car, the Lancia Delta S4, which marked Group B and the 80s. It could have allowed the Italian firm to win the constructors' world championship in 1986 and it is also a tribute to Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto who were tragically lost on May 2, 1986, in Corsica and who could have become world champion of the drivers. Markku Alen contributed greatly to the legend of the Lancia Delta S4 even though he did not win the Thousand Lakes Rally that year, unlike in 1983 where he won the event at the wheel of the Lancia Rallye 037 evolution 1. It proves he's a legendary driver who marked the 70s and 80s and it gives me pleasure to see him 32 years later at the wheel of this Italian race beast and enjoy driving it. Respect Mr. Alèn you are a great gentleman of the rally just like your compatriot Henri Toivonen.
I do love when I watch a living legend like Mr. Alen being so sensitive, humble and kind. It's a privilege watching him, a living legend, driving again the (his) mightiest rally car ever.
Yep...The real treat was to get to see Markku and Juha both driving "maximum attack" because it really counted....whoever won there would be World Champion...unless something unexpected happened...and 10 days later it did..Lancia's silly protest of the 205s side skirts at San Remo was reversed..And Juha was Champion..I only got to wartch from SS20 because we broke ring and pinion on SS19 and DNFed.. But only a few tears because we knew we could watch the last 2 days of an era that was over with the last Special Stage..And to quote Hanny Mikkola's co driver from the year he win the Crown, (who I ran into at the stage after we DNF, and who had been with Mikkola at Olympus 1985 where they win by 19 minutes over Buffum) "This time its for real"...(He explain that the year before what I saw was "Not really for real...OK we win but we were "just driving"...I asked 19 minutes on Buffum and you were "just driving"?" Hertz said "Well, not just driving. We were making Pace Notes, Hannu calling out and I was writing down..You never know, the next year we might be here and it could be full WRC, so you take the chance to make notes" Did you see the interview with Markuu and Juha where they said about the first Group A cars? "They were terrible..Very slow.." "I drive with one hand..Just one hand and full gas."
Imparate tedeschi imparate...
In my youth I saw this Man drive and win with Lancia Statos, Fiat 131 Abarth, Lancia 037, S4 and Lancia Delta Integrale. He has always been an explosive driver and an absolute World Champion. However he claimed that Henri Toivonen was born to drive S4, the only driver in tune with that furious Beast. Henri Toivonen & Gilles Villeneuve, the twins of Speed. Drive carefully in Heaven, beloved Guys.

Yeah.. I believe very much this is reason why Toivonen crashed. There is picture somewhere online from the spot after Henri fell with Sergio, there was no proper skidmarks on the road, no signs of braking. :/
@@dickmccarthy9496 Although Henri was exhausted by that time. Could it have been that he was simply too tired to brake, or even lost consciousness for a split second?
@@paulcaswell2813 The flu was mainly before the race, but of course he was probably feeling the effects still more or less during the race. On the other hand, the way Henri dominated the event, it really says something, doesn't it. Technical issues, fairly sure of that, causing the crash.

RAC 85, Henri won, OK fair enough he got the lead from Markku who had problems in Kielder but still, outstanding drive. Monte Carlo 86 Henri all the way to win, Markku lots of electrical and other problems throughout, retirement. Sweden, Henri leading the race until valve failure forces retirement, Markku finishes 2nd eventually the race but had nothing on Henkka while he was still in the race. Portugal, difficult to estimate since it stopped short. After 3 stages Lancia 1-2-3 Biasion Alen Toivonen within 2 or 3 seconds with each others and looking good to dominate the event. Safari, Markku good 3rd place with 037, Henri participated in Costa Smeralda, winning there with S4 in very convincing style. Corsica, Henri dominated all the way until the tragedy. Had several minutes in his pocket vs Markku (and others). I love both of them they are my heroes but with S4, it was Henri's car all the way, I don't see Markku dominating him. He did great in the later parts of 86 however.
@@jussiuutaniemi3767 Markku led the '85 RAC for four-and-a-half days. It was only at the last moment that Henri took the lead to win. Memories of seeing Henri in the S4 for the first time, with half the car's front gone missing LOL! Little did I think I was looking at the eventual rally winner!
Just a thought, has any driver of the Lancia works team turned out to be a disappointing arsehole later in life? For some reason it seems that everyone who was in there remained a decent human being, albeit spectacularly talented and successful. They seem to have had quite good management of egos. Cheers to that!
