I have the FHD IPS 60hz panel version of this laptop with the 1070 and I absolutely LOVE IT. I use if between work and home exactly as Matthew described and mine is equipped with the 99wh battery, so I am getting 6 to 7 hours of usage time on one charge for basic productivity tasks and web browsing. This is of course with the Alien Fx lighting turned off in all zones, power saver mode turned on, and the screen at 50%, but that is still freaking incredible for a 17inch powerhouse of a laptop. I don't even bring my charger with me when I go to the coffee shop for a day of working on research papers in it anymore! Its great battery life makes it justifiably useful for practical applications as opposed to merely a gimmick to show off at LAN parties or coffee shops. Some will complain about the weight and I definitely agree that this is not a day to day 10 hours of carrying around the city kind of laptop. But it is perfect for its intended use and has been a joy to do upgrades on and game with. The weight is justified too in that it is freaking bullet proof. The pictures and videos before I bought and held my own have not done it justice. It. Is. A. Beast!!! The plastic grill on the bottom is the only thing I think that would break if I dropped this on an uneven surface from a height of 6 feet! The 17 R4 is seriously a damn fine laptop that gets way more hate than it deserves based on crappy older models and Dell buying Alienware some years back. Companies don't stay in business for long if they really suck as much as the haters say and the good ones will strive to satisfy customers wishes now or make hard design choices that receive flak but will ultimately benefit users in the future (I.e., companies replacing more and more ports with USB-C, but not to the extreme Apple went for just yet XD). This is a good laptop and most of the top TH-cam tech reviewers like Dave Lee, MobileTechReviews, and so on have been giving it resounding praise. Pardon my long comment but I just want more people to be aware of how cool these machines are! Bad experiences can happen with every company, every model of laptop, every production year and refresh, so don't listen to a few pissed off people who go onto every video and review of a certain laptop or company and tear it to pieces, or worse, someone who has NEVER owned the model and is simply giving it or the company a hard time because they have nothing else better to do than create or sustain annoying controversies and arguments.
I am getting your version of the laptop tomorrow. However, I hate the fact it doesn't have an optical drive or a card reader and missing out on at least two USB 3.1 ports.
I am frustrated by the lack of the card reader myself, but as for the optical drive, that is just how it is anymore with the latest and greatest laptops. I myself have only used the USB optical drive accessory I purchased 10 times or so in the past year so it hasn't bothered me that much. As for the USB-A ports if that is what you are referring to, I think Alienware took a good path here with including two USB-C (the one on the back does thunderbolt 3 and the one of the side is USB 3.0 or 3.1) and two USB-A ports. The USB-C ports are going to keep this laptop relevant in the future and in the meantime I just bought some cheap Aukey USB-C to A adapters for when I need more than two USB ports. I do think they could have included at least 1 to 2 more USB-A ports on the right side, but I have to admit, the overall look and choice of ports has resulted in this being a very sexy and sleek machine. I also really appreciate the majority of the ports being on the back since that further keeps the laptop streamlined and your desk clean of cords.
I am getting this laptop today in a couple of hours. It's exactly your version of it. And I hope I like it as much as you do. Any caveats or words of advice?
Given that this is a huge laptop with large fans and excellent cooling, they are relatively quiet at all times. During heavy extended gaming, you really just get a loud "whoosh" of a sound more than whining like you do with a smaller laptop. On idle, the fans kick on occasionally, but it is generally a very quiet laptop when you are not doing heavily demanding tasks. Check out my channel here soon as I will be doing a video review of my 2017 Alienware 17 R4 including live recording of the fan sounds during heavy gaming. I already have made a review of the 2017 Dell XPS 15 FHD model that people seem to be enjoying! Not trying to treat this as an advertisement, but just wanted to let you know I will be doing the thing you want to see lol!
I have been using this laptop for the past three days and I have not experienced any issue with fan noise. I am loving its sleek look and fast speed. But I have turned off the Tobii software.
Honestly I don't relate to all these comments. I got an Alienware M17xR2 in 2011 and I'm still typing this comment with it, and its been on almost every single day since I bought it. The thing most people really underestimate is the build quality and the niche this brand fills. Sure, MSI are great for the money but they are built like a cheap plastic toy from Taiwan, because they are, thats how they save cost. This brick might weigh more than the moon but its survived x5 flights at 12 hours +, countless bus journeys, about another 30 hours flight time on that, in 3 different continents and it still wants to keep going. I spilled a glass of wine on the keyboard when I was in New Zealand and didn't turn it off so it shorted out. Took it to repair in England and repaired the water damage without even having to order in parts (3rd party repair). You have to maintain it every 6 months and clean the gunk out of the heatsink vents and re-paste the GPU/CPU but in that whole time I've only re-pasted twice. Maybe I just got a good egg, or maybe a vocal minority got a few bad eggs, but my experience with this brand has been amazing and I'm finally going to retire and upgrade after 7 years. Don't believe all the sheeple, the extra money isn't just for a brand name, its so it keeps working long after you would or should have already upgraded, while those cheaper models die.
As an update I upgraded to Alienware 17 R4 with 7820hk with GTX 1080 and 120hz gsync screen with liquid metal repaste and it runs pretty much anything I throw at it at max settings at 1440p at over 60fps staying around 60-70c even after hours without breaks and its an absolute dream to use.
@@ORlENTATlON I have the same exact specs as you but with the lesser 8750h cpu and it's the R5 rather than the R4, not sure about the difference between the two. I'm getting it tomorrow and I'm fairly nervous about the temperatures. How difficult is it to repaste? Doesn't liquid metal void the warranty? I heard the heatsink has trouble putting enough pressure on the gpu and especially the cpu, maybe even not making complete contact. I am considering putting some copper shims in there for better pressure and contact. I'm relieved to hear that your temperatures are really good, though. How were they before the repaste?
I’ve a 15r2 and I’ve got to say 3 years later it handles anything I throw at it and I carry it frequently on flights. It’s made better than the majority of computers I’ve owned. Looking forward to getting the next one in a year or two
My biggest concern is fan noise during and out of gaming sessions. Can you comment on how the noise levels of this laptop is? Considering getting it! Thanks and great review!
I just got one of these in April. It's a beast. It's quite powerful, I call it "the tank" the only problem I have is the battery life and the speakers are slightly tinny, also you need to get an expensive backpack to hold this ( don't plan on putting anything else in the bag) I got this because this was the only laptop I could find with 4 hard drive bays. If you plan on not leaving the house, I would get this. If you need to edit video and on the go I would get something else.
a very nice review, great work and perfect quality matthew! i have already a gaming pc with the newest components (1080ti, ...) and i was looking for a second solution to go-out... you helped with my decision and now that's the one i need! :-) take care!
actually, if you ever used one, you'd see it tracks your eyes AND your face, depending on game. source:my 17 r4, unturned tobii tracking: when looking, it pans a little, when turning head while looking straight, it turns the screen.
I ordered it, not this exact model of the review, but the one with a GTX 1060 6GB and 16GB DDR4, it should arrive in 2-3 weeks... (on Dell's site it says extimated delivery 30/10/2017) I can't wait to get a decent laptop to bring to my University to work with Maya, Cinema 4D, Photoshop and Sony Vegas... last year I brought my laptop and it sucks, slow as shit, it's a 2008 MacBook 13", it takes roughly 5 minutes to completely boot and the programs are very slow, I couldn't even render properly with Cinema 4D, that damn thing has only 2 cores... can't wait to get this laptop and I hope the battery will also last longer than mine...
Gary Sellars yeah, it arrived November 6th. The thermals are good for a laptop, on 100% usage, the CPU reaches 73 degrees, the overall performance feels like a 2015-2016 desktop, it can get over 60 FPS on most modern games on medium-high settings and has no issues at all with old games, I bring it weekly to the University to work with Cinema 4D and the render time is exactly like my i7-4790k. At home, is used by my mom, for whom I made a second user, so I don't have her messy desktop and her Chrome saved passwords when I use it; on boot, depending whose in front of it, gets recognized by the IR and it automatically logs in the right user. Our best laptop so far!!!
The 6000 series i7 from 2016 was the one that had the heat issues. The newer ones of 2017 do not. I have this exact laptop reviewed and his temps are spot on with my own.
I did mine myself with the 6820hq, has liquid metal on cpu and gpu, never goes past 60 degrees on both the gpu and cpu under full load and its overclocked custom to 4.1 all cores and gpu is also overclocked. :) hope this helps, the later models with the 7820 etc have better paste from the factory, if you want the best repaste yourself, that goes for any laptop or desktop
I have one and it's absolutely fantastic! Cool temperatures, solid chassis, and great for long gaming sessions. In UK the refubished store have a lot of great offers everyday.
how r u getting only 70fps with an overclocked cpu and 1080 gpu ????? i get around 90 and thats without the overclock and with a locked cpu and gtx 1070 on the same qhd panel !
I think it's a 7820HK processor not HQ, just to be particular Matt! And I believe it actually came out around the same time as the 7700HQ, it's just an upped version of that processor with a slightly higher base and boost clock speed and like 2MB more cache if I recall correctly.
You just earned a new sub. I was looking for a new gaming laptop my old one was a MacBook Pro...... 2013 :( so what ended up happening is that I got my headphone jack stuck inside of the Mac. I got an Alienware 17 R4 on June 17, 2017. It worked fine for two weeks and then Google Chrome started crashing, Edge won't launch and IE won't launch either. After troubleshooting for days, I finally nuked the system to factory state. Now I just installed Google Chrome and it crashed again on a clean installation. What's going on? Can you please help?
Hey Matthew, Nice review. I am looking forward to buying the Alienware 17 R4 (2017) and therefore landed here. However, on the official site, there have been loads of negative feedback by buyers especially this year (April,May,June). They have all rated the product with just 1 star out of 5 and almost all of them are complaining about the quality and the components. Any thoughts ?
Hey Matthew Moniz, i got a question for you. The Alienware 17 got a bunch of different versions, so not in regards to gaming performance but to the cost/value relationship, which of those would you say is the best? After all, they can be as "cheap" as 1,349.99 to up to almost 3k $
Im thinking about this one because of the cooling options and it has better features than Macbook for a lower price. And also I have always work with Dell and I cant help it!
tobii eye tracking has nothing to do with windows hello feature, if you are buying without tobii even then also the default camera supports windows hello (because of infrared capability).
my ssd just died out of nowhere, I bought the top of the line of everything on this box at the time (less than 2 years old)... definitely thinking at the time was to replace my home PC with portability, when at home I hook it into a 27 inch curved screen and a bose audio system, slick alienware mouse, but the dumb $120 ssd died, lol (I have an image to reload and will receive the replacement part from dell but I thought it was telling given the cost of this box)
okay i may not understand 60% of this video, ima phone guy okay. Nice video matthew hope you and your family had and still have a good weekend! ;) all love from denmark
I have the 17r4 with the same CPU/GPU setup (I have more ram and I added another SSD) and I'm happy with it since I travel so much for work. I will say that looking at the temperatures you have in the video, you got one of the better ones in terms of thermals. I, along with a number of other owners, have had to take ours apart and repaste the heat sinks plus balance the thermal pads. Other than that, my laptop has worked flawlessly. I even have it paired with an Alienware AW3418DW when I'm at home and the mobile 1080 still handles it well on most games.
I got the AW 17 R4 with no SSD and bought it separetely. The one i got is ADATA SU800 M.2 2280 256GB Ultimate 3D NAND Solid State Drive (ASU800NS38-256GT-C). Is it a good SSD for that laptop? I read its really easy to install and migrate windows to.
im about to go to college...im inbetween alienware and apple tbh im not a fan of apple but ive never own alienware and i wanted to give it a try...would you recommend this laptop for college?.....i also play bunch of games like alot of games...haha
i love watching old gaming laptop videos so i can see what all has changed

I heard many people had to repaste their due to overheating in late 2016. have those issues subsided
JPOG7 TV i have the 2017 core i7 7700hq aw 17 r4 and the cpu temps are cool not going above 70 degC while using OCCT and Prime 95

Ryan Cope cool, I will test the temperatures first because I have the 7820 and if it's over 60, I'll use liquid metal so it can last longer
I have one and it's absolutely fantastic! Cool temperatures, solid chassis, and great for long gaming sessions. In UK the refubished store have a lot of great offers everyday.

Hey Matthew Moniz, i got a question for you. The Alienware 17 got a bunch of different versions, so not in regards to gaming performance but to the cost/value relationship, which of those would you say is the best? After all, they can be as "cheap" as 1,349.99 to up to almost 3k $
Hello! Thanks for your review! What do you think about this laptop to work editing movies and motion graphics?
Im thinking about this one because of the cooling options and it has better features than Macbook for a lower price. And also I have always work with Dell and I cant help it!
Great review man as always😁👍
Thanks Haris!! = )
Matthew Moniz Pleasure keep giving us the great content👍

tobii eye tracking has nothing to do with windows hello feature, if you are buying without tobii even then also the default camera supports windows hello (because of infrared capability).
2:56 it should be i7 7820hk
Yup you're right typo!
Matthew Moniz ahh yee glad to help!
RoboCoffee yee
Matthew Moniz dude what about overclocking ypu didnt go over that even tho it a k sku processor
Matthew Moniz h
Alienware: We made our palmrests less greasy.
Asus Zephyrus: Can't get greasy, if you have no palmrests. /guy pointing at head meme.
I want to buy a 4k unit, with a GTX 1080. Will it perform today?
got the gtx 1080 and jesus I love this thing. for 2200, it's pretty worth it and a copy of Destiny 2 is a bonus
Why do you say the screen is not good for design work/CAD?
Does all the alienware 17 r4 come with tobii eye tracking?
Damn I love razor blade design but this looks like a Lamborghini and the razer like a roll royce
The one thing I wish they would fix is the fan noise, it's by far the loudest I have heard.
my ssd just died out of nowhere, I bought the top of the line of everything on this box at the time (less than 2 years old)... definitely thinking at the time was to replace my home PC with portability, when at home I hook it into a 27 inch curved screen and a bose audio system, slick alienware mouse, but the dumb $120 ssd died, lol (I have an image to reload and will receive the replacement part from dell but I thought it was telling given the cost of this box)
Is it recomendable to use gaming laptop like these in designing software like autocad, solidworks, and 3dsmax etc.?
Possible to get a review of the ThinkPad P71?
0:14 it sounded like he said 'cottage' instead of 'college'
+Luther Enmore Luther I did say cottage I'm Canadian we go their a lot
Matthew Moniz Not bad review though, you got a sub from me
Thanks man = )
What does the cottage mean?!
Hello Mr. Moniz. Good and honest review. Please review the new HP Omen X 17 with GTX 1080. Many thanks.
The cottage?
whats the exact box dimensions and shipping weight for this laptop..?
Very informational and helpful.
+8-Bit Temmie Gaming glad I could help !!
will you review 15" version with gtx 1060?
okay i may not understand 60% of this video, ima phone guy okay.
Nice video matthew hope you and your family had and still have a good weekend! ;) all love from denmark
haha thanks Chris! Hope you have a great weekend as well!
I have My friend
Is it good if it's not upgraded at all?
Yup!
And what about the overheat issues??? Are they fixed??
I show the heat tests near the end.. it's all tehre = )
Matthew Moniz i know man, but too many people say CPU gets 105 degrees :/
I have the 17r4 with the same CPU/GPU setup (I have more ram and I added another SSD) and I'm happy with it since I travel so much for work. I will say that looking at the temperatures you have in the video, you got one of the better ones in terms of thermals. I, along with a number of other owners, have had to take ours apart and repaste the heat sinks plus balance the thermal pads. Other than that, my laptop has worked flawlessly. I even have it paired with an Alienware AW3418DW when I'm at home and the mobile 1080 still handles it well on most games.
Might buy 1 after i come back from bangkok for my studies
should i switch to this coming being a mac user it it worth it? I'm looking for a gaming laptop and still don't know if this is IT
Got one and sold it a week later. Too big to carry and temps were way too hot without a laptop cooler.
What about this compared to the Aorus x7 v7?
Hopefully the next iteration will introduce Max-Q reference design. It's surely beast.
That would be sweet!
Matthew Moniz and hopefully you'll review it too! #TheHype
please re review huawei mate 9 it has been more than 6 months since you reviewed it for the first time
I doubt ill be doing a revisit for the mate 9 /= Sorry
Hi, is it made up of plastic or aluminum?
I know a few things about computers but not much... should I buy it??? Is the pricing good for how good it is.
Pokeman Catcher
Pricing is extremely good for a machine that has the GTX 1080 in it.
FlameRider ok thx
does it upgradable up to 64gb ram ( 32gb x 2 slot)?
Hi ! you don't talk about GPU max temperatures ? which were they ? around 80°C too ?
great work
I’m looking for gaming laptops to get is this one worth? Or is there a better one?
I've heard there are some real issues with the razer blade especially with overheating
Why isn't AW 18 better speced than AW 17 and AW15 etc? Annoys me it only has 4th gen intel core CPU and aging gpu's.
Can you plz tell aleanware 17 r4 uhd vs qhd with gsync.. which one is better? planing to buy one ..

Matthew Moniz cool. thanks for ur quick response
great review bruh
Thanks Danielle!
is that machine good for audio production?
I host a podcast and I'm in the market for a new pc/mac.
Oh by the way, your review is wrong on the CPU. It's not the 7280HQ but the 7820HK.
here in 2024 I'm watching this with my Alienware 17 R4 2017 😁
Thinking of buying one second had. Whats the gaming performance like today? Any overheating issues? Thanks
Thumbed up this video. Excellent review. But I don't understand why you had to shoot that poor horse.
+Mo Dabbas thanks Mo!! That horse didn't Subscribe to the channel I had to let him know who's boss
I have AW17R4 and I run WoT at 85 to 100 fps. was it worth 2600? Hell yeah!
Nice!!! it's such a beastly laptop!
Hey, is this with max-q nvidia design or not? Thanks.
Do you plan on reviewing the HP Spectre x360 13"? I would really appreciate it. Thanks
