It's actually insane how long intel stayed in 14nm. Same thing with how they held us hostage with 4c 8t cpus for 8 years? I7-920 (cpu in my first home built computer) to the i7-8700k, which was my second computer oddly enough. Intel kinda had this coming. They rested on their laurels and got caught not only napping but deep in rem sleep.

This is an outstanding review and is the first I've seen that helps me truly understand the 14900K compared to the 13900K and the 7950X. In the real-world performance section starting at around minute 6:00, what is the power consumption of the AMD 7950X in the multi-core tests like Cinebench R23? It's my understanding from this review the power consumption of the 14900K (with Intel Limits) is 253W for those benchmarks. From tests I've seen on the 7950X I believe it is drawing similar power when the 7950X is full-throttle on multi-core tests. If so, then this makes the 14900K cooling requirements about the same as 7950X with the Intel limits on for the 14900K. Is this an accurate takeaway? If so, then I see this as the 14900K possibly having a slight edge over the 7950X due to other advantages like stability with higher speed RAM.
In my opinion increased performance with increased power consumption doesn’t count. I can overlock any chip with more voltage and get faster clocks and better performance. Improve your IPC and efficiency if you want me to care. Especially since the IHSs are becoming too small and it’s simply becoming impossible to transfer enough heat through them.
just bought the 14900k. was looking at 13900k but the difference was only $30 so i went with 14th gen. coming from a 9700k. definitely gonna see a difference
I am coming from an I9 9900k. I do a little bit of gaming and light 4k video editing. I am currently in the process of doing a 14900k build mainly for video editing and some VR gaming. I am still keeping my 9900k for gaming and other things as it is still a very capable CPU.
We have been at the point of diminishing returns for a few years now but most reviewers are not using this term...they need to be. The gains are not worth the expense.
People are so caught on about the improvement between 13900k and 14900k…. Meanwhile, there’s people out there with much worse CPUs who are just looking for an upgrade. Going from 5600x to 14900k would be such a big upgrade for me.
@@mysticqro950in real world, would it be though? You have 6 cores at 3.7Ghz already. You have a high clock speed and 6 of them. I dont think your real world gain would be much at all unless you maxed out those 6 cores all the time. I'm on a 6700K with a 1080ti gfx card but I use 16 silultaneous instances of Bluestacks over 4 cores and 8 threads at 4.0Ghz)...it eats RAM and the CPU useage is always at 96% until I start multitasking, then it starts to lag..... I could do with a couple of extra cores.... but do I need to spend so much to get it? Nope... but I could buy yours off you for peanuts and get a similar gain but for a fraction of the price. Which is the better position? Buying yours off you for peanuts. Why? Because the costs outweigh the gains now, even for me.
I got the 14900K for $389 on Amazon. And it shreds 4K transcodes in my PLEX Server. It acts like nothing is going on when it transcodes. I haven’t had that level of performance with any other CPU. Granted I’m coming from the 11900k which is now being used with a 3080ti strictly for gaming. But my PLEX Server running Windows 11 is a beast now with the 14900K. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for all this time. I’m sure it’s not the best option for gaming, but for PLEX with Windows 11? It’s a champ. Great video by the way. 😎👍
It’s still a great cpu. But if you have a 13th gen, you don’t need it. Glad you enjoy it. I just bought a 14900kf on ebay for 400. Cheapest I could find on the internet.
it is indeed a beast I use it for exactly the same use case with an rtx 4070, wish I would've done a little more research and gotten a rtx 3080ti and a shorter base length because it blocks two slots for my Toshiba MG08ACATEY's which I DID do research on those, they have the lowest 15TB failure rates with over 1,000 drives sampled unlike seagate with 3% and up failure rates.
Absolutely... not just currently but they should've focused on this since the last few generations. AMD might draw more power on Idle conditions but under load Intel just burns through your energy bill like crazy. Intel is a no go for efficient computers sadly.
@@rizdog5735Lovelace is a lot more power efficient than RNDA3. The 4080 pulls half the power draw on a 7900xtx. While matching it in rasterization performance and destroying it in raytracing.
@@keenerz Intel significantly improved operating temperatures for that chip. It ran 4.0 ghz baseclock 4.4 boost, with only 88w power consumption. 4770k was 84 watts with 3.5 ghz baseclock and 3.9 boost.
It's weird how a name can change something so much. If this was 13750K or 13950K then it would be OK. But now when it's called 14900K it's getting laughed at. Even though its the same exact product.
I did exactly what you said and waited till black Friday however the 13900k was not discounted and the 14900k was discounted. In fact it was discounted below the 13900k by almost $80. Seeing as I was currently on a 12700kf I jumped and bought it. However now when I tell people my build I always have to explain why I went with the 14th gen i9 as I too would never buy one for MSRP if a 13900k was cheaper lol. Cheers and great video!
Your review is by far the best and most insightful review of 14900K! Your comparison of 14900K without limit and with Intel limits is really informative. In light of your analysis, it seems 14900K seems to have been really well binned and can be made quite efficient and cool-running if you optimize LLC and AC/DC loadline in addition to enforcing Intel limits.
One thing worth mentioning though with 14th gen is the much better memory support. the IMC is better and enables higher speeds, lower latency at higher capacity than last gen. But unless you care about this I otherwise completely agree with the conclusion. Unless you need/want to be able to run 128gb+ of ram at higher speeds than you could do on 13th gen, then just go 13th gen
The "much better" is highly dependent on memory manufacturer support. It seems like low latency modules aren't a priority as manufacturers keep needlessly pushing the frequency wars.

You should always undervolt these CPU's. Most Raptor Lake CPU's can do -0.1V undervolt, which drastically drops power use and temperatures. No idea why stock voltage is so high.
Underrated comment. This is especially true if you have a z series board. I have a 13700K and 240mm aio. Hits 100C almost instantly in benchmarks at stock voltages.
Interesting that this video is actually making me feel that the 14900k is a better choice for me than the 7950x3d! I wanted some better gaming performance than my 5950x without losing productivity and it seems the 14900k excels at both evern when power limited giving me excellent Premiere performance as well as photoshop plus great 1% for games too. Better than getting the 7800x3D which will hurt my productivity or the 7950x3D which will give me less gaming performance. I also kind of want to go back to the more stable intel drivers/platform. After moving from the 9900k to the 5950x, I enjoyed the lots of threads but stability never felt as good as the 9900k before that.
I upgraded from a 5950x to 14700k and it solved so many driver bug issues. Now my computer runs much more stable and I can undervolt this chips to almost -0.1. During cyberpunk it only consumes 90 w.
6.1GHz on all P cores + 4.5GHz all E-cores after Intel’s neural network AI optimization & a lot of bios voltage tweaking on my i9 14900k begs to differ… custom water loop on 2x 360mm rads. Under 320w cinebench/occt I’m maintaining 5.7ghz/4.5ghz for HOURS on end meaning massive performance over anything else. It’s a non-argument for those of us who like to push the limit. 💪💪

@@jiqqamanthis is also on improved clock speeds to after weeks of testing. As we speak I’m sitting at 6.2x3/6.0x2/5.9x3 on the P cores and 4.6ghz on all 16 E cores, Ring at 5.0ghz. Under 100% load after 10 mins in Cinebench I’m down to 5.7mhz all P cores, 4.4ghz all E cores and 4.5ghz ring. I’m not hitting the thermal limit (max CPU package temp is 93C and max P core at 93C after 10 min run), and not hitting power limit either. No throttling anywhere of any kind. 😁 I’m on a very large custom water loop with dual 360mm rads tho, and 2L of water
A few months ago I was set on getting a 7800X3D but heard about all the issues they had with RAM compatibility so it had me worried. When you put in the cost of the more expensive M/B and RAM in my case it was only around $80 more to go with a 13900K with faster RAM speed mind you, 6000 M/T vs 7800 M/T. Knowing that with Intel things would just work as it's not a new platform had me changing my mind. I just didn't want to spend $4K with a 4090 mind you just strictly for gaming. If I could pay a little more to get possible productively work out of it as well would be more of a value to me. Yeah some games would run better using AMD but to me I didn't mind as the 13900K could hold it's own as well. The only downside I saw was the power draw from Intel which I didn't like. Also the 7950X3D was not really considered as it was another $100 jump from $550 (13900K) just to get that and I was well over my budget already. I didn't want to pay more just to have worst performance in certain games vs the 7800X3D. It just didn't make any sense to me. Looking at it now I think I made the right choice but man that 13900K sure does run hot. I'm running a 360 AIO at this time but I think I will repaste it soon as I'm using the stock pre-applied paste at this time. I'm also going to use a CPU bracket as well as I heard those work well on making better contact with the CPU. I'm sure glad I didn't want for the 14th gen CPUs though as I knew it wasn't going to be a big upgrade at all especially when I will be only gaming in 4K.
@@tyson8585 I got my 4090 first before I decided on a CPU. I heard bad things about the 7950X3D vs the 7800X3D. I was set on the 7800X3D for the longest time but saw that I could get more cores for not that much more. Yes I will be mostly gaming on it but changed my mind at the very end to make it last longer as a build. What if when I pass it on to my daughter in a few years and she takes up doing productivity work on it. It just made more sense in the long run I guess. Honestly I never really considered the 7950X3D cause yes it was more money which I was already over my budget of $3K. I could've made it happen using last gen parts but it was already past mid year and I didn't want to build something that old in my eyes that I was planning to keep for at least 5 years. Let's just say I was already set on a particular anesthetic of my build which required me to not change certain parts. At the end it came down to the CPU/MB/RAM combo. $4K on just a gaming rig was not justifiable to me but something that could do both was. I feel like the AM5 platform needs to mature a little more for me to seriously consider it due to all the RAM issues as I mentioned before. I will probably start another build in a year or so. We'll see what both AMD and Intel have to offer then. I'm already kinda eyeing Arrow Lake tho but I'm open to see what AMD has as well as I'm a fan of their more efficient CPUs. Lets just say I have a lot more AMD CPUs at home vs Intel. AMD basically messed up the 7950X3D this year or I would've went with them for sure even with the extra cost. By the way it wasn't just $100 cause that's just the CPU difference alone. The comparable MB and RAM was more expensive as well. It was probably another $150 or so totalling around a $250 difference.
@@volcalstoneif you’re building a new system from scratch, there’s really no reason to buy an Intel CPU for gaming at the high end. Ryzen X3D consumes a third of the power of the 13900K while providing equal or better performance in almost all games. This is what this video concludes, as well.
I have new settings which I am using for my i9-13900k and i9-14900k. I don’t like the uncertainty of undervolting so prefer working with power and clock limits. With these settings I got a couple of FPS BETTER on CP2077 and Forza Horizon Benchmark, went from 99th to 98th percentile on PC Mark Extended, passed the Time Spy Stress Test, Time Spy was within a whisker of the average for my hardware, Cinebench R23 finished between 37-38000, CPU-Z, Intel Diag tool and Prime95 was stable and < 90 degrees. MCE off, PL1 and PL2 limit to 225, limit P-core boost to 5.3 GHz and E-core boost to 4.0GHz, and use balanced power profile in Windows (although I do disable core parking to keep system highly responsive). Oh and just XMP on the RAM. I didn’t change LLC or voltage offset values. With these settings, you should have no stability issues, be able to run on an air cooler like the NH-D15 (what I use on my 3 i9 13th/14th gen systems) and will barely notice any performance changes in gaming or productivity.
Update: I have now set voltage offset at a modest -0.010v. I have disabled the C6&C7 C states and EIST. I have then increated max P core clock to 5.5GHz and E cores to 4.3GHz. Lastly I have locked AVX at 0 offset. I have tested on P95/CB R23 and CB R15. All great and in a mid 20 degree room, no workload exceeds 80c on package or cores. Happy Bunny!
I ended up buying the Intel 14900K with a 360 mm liquid cooler. I ended up getting the aces dark hero motherboard. I used AI overclocking knowing very little about temps. After seeing my temps shoot up under load I started looking into it. I'm still not sure how I should run this CPU I am pushing it pretty hard for 8K and 4K video editing. Right now it's running at 6.2 GHz and 192 GB of DDR5 running at around 5400 no errors in memtest 64

From what i can tell the reason in the temp differences appear to be voltage as HWUB seemed to see the 149 run at slightly lower voltage than the 139 did. Thats not saying much as you can prob undervolt the 139 yourself. it still hits TJmax and will throttle w/ all core workloads, but runs under 100 due to the voltage drop. So an OC plus with an undervolt. Clearly your video shows that. And HWub found a clear larger power draw on the 14900k in CP2077 so something is off there too. Maybe board variance? Not sure.
Due to the process node improvements I mentioned, it only makes sense than you could run these newer chips at an overall lower voltage. However, thermal output is largely based off the usual power combination of amperage x voltage. These 14th Gen chips might use less voltage but they also have increased amperage needs.
@@HardwareCanucks Depends on the load you run. Seems blender stresses it less than cinebench. HWUB found cinebench to push it further than the 13900k power wise as well as in most games they tested (thermal throttling on an AIO cooler). Voltage differences may not be enough to explain it. Perhaps MB variance here. Did you do cinebench 2024 runs at all? It could also be the interface w/ the IHS is a bit better too to explain temperatures. IM not sure if they improved the thermal solution in general.
I match 14900k performance by 2 step 1. I open bios on my high end rog mobo 2. i click ai overclock on my 13900k and wala same of 14900 which noted i already use it for 1 year.
I am a composer primarily working in the field of visual media. I have been using an Intel i5-4690K 3.50 GHz processor for the past 10 years, and I am planning to build an entirely new high-end computer to keep up with the power requirements of the latest software 😅. Would you recommend going for the 14th or 13th generation, or something else? I am thinking of purchasing an Asus ProArt Z790 motherboard.
Well, I'm not disagreeing with your recommendation. However, I don't think AM5 will get the long term support that AM4 did - my gut says we will only see two generations of CPU's on AM5 (vs 3 + one refresh (Zen+) on AM4).
Yes that's the impression I have, Zen 6 will be a very different cpu and that could mean a new platform is needed. So that would mean only 2 generations for AM5. But I could wrong.
@@profounddamas Yea, that's why my gut feels the way it does. I hope my gut is wrong and AMD is able to last 3 generations though. I also seem to recall somewhere AMD did update the socket life from 2025+ to 2026+ though... But historically speaking, AMD usually is good with socket life and providing some form of inter-generational compatibility. AM2 through AM3+ was pretty good for having some flexibility given that the socket for all intents and purposes didn't change a huge amount leaving a bit of inter-generational flexibility. Socket 7 (Super 7) was very long lived... Perhaps a little too long, but still. AMD hasn't had all that many short lived sockets overall - the only two I can think of off hand being Slot A & s940 for very short life. Even s939 lasted a little longer then I originally thought as did s754.
For people looking at that idiotic comparing of CPUs in gaming... Keep in mind that's 1080p. Nobody gonna buy 14900K nor 7850X3D ($800 CPUs) for 1080p gaming. These CPUs are made for 4090 graphic cards which actually has lower FPS than lower cost graphic cards in 1080p. 14900K + 4090 are made for 4k and wide/ultrawide gaming. In this field, Intel destroys 7850X3D from AMD. ...Which is why it's so dumb to compare these CPUs in 1080p and even compare it to 7800X mid budget CPU from AMD that is made for 1080p gaming. I am personally buying right now $11k setup with new Samsung Odyssey G9 - 57", 7680x2160 (2*4k, almost 8k), 240Hz. You can guess if I am gonna use $800 CPU from AMD for low to mid budget gaming or $800 CPU from Intel which excels in 4k and above gaming. :))
Alderlake and Raptor Lake is pretty much just the same processor in IPC performance as Hardware unboxed clocked 12th, 13th, and 14th gen processors with the same clock speed and found no difference in performance between the three it just means that the 13th gen and 14th gen were just highly overclocked versions of the 12th Gen with more e-cores added in.
@@HardwareCanucks are you talking about the igpu or the dedicated gpu? So, 7800x3D with dgpu be better than 14700k's igpu? I can live with a minor compromise with ryzen if it means better upgrade path.
So if I understand correctly. You have to change from BIOS optimization to Disabled - enforce all limits and then it would run much better? You wouldnt necisairly have to change anything else?

The wattage during gaming is all I need. I’m now living on my own so now efficiency is the most important spec for me. Why have a monster cpu when the competition has nearly the same performance at almost half the power draw. Same with gpu I currently have a 3070 and it still gives me good performance without the risk of burning my house down or needing a nuclear reactor to power it.
go check the review from Hardware Unboxxed - they implemented total system wattage for every game, compared to a dozen other system configurations and for me, that was eye opening. good Luck.
If your i9-14900K consumes 177W while gaming (as this video claims at 7:59), you'll consume 1.06 kWH over a 6 hour gaming session. The USA average electricity price 23 cents per kWH, so you've spent almost a quarter. If you play a 6 hour session every day, all 7 days of the week for an entire month, those quarters add up to almost $7.50. Even if you live in a part of Europe like Netherlands or Belgium where electricity is 0.40 to 0.50 Euro per kWH, a full month of long gaming sessions every single day still costs only a tiny fraction of the price of an Intel i9-14900K + cooler + motherboard.
I was forced to buy a new motherboard when I upgraded to what I'm currently running; a 13600K just a few months ago. (Upgraded from a 9400F, LOL!) I'm glad to see that the 14-series uses the same socket, but do you think it would be worth it for me to upgrade to the 14900K in a couple of year's time? Can't lie, I'm leaning towards probably waiting for 15th gen where I will, sadly, be forced to buy a new motherboard yet again... Sigh... Sucks that I'll only be able to use this Z790 mobo for just 1 freakin' CPU generation. Ah well, I'll probably just go for the 15700K; to up the SKU one level as well; from __600K to __700K. I am looking for a solid gaming/productivity PC, what would you recomend ? I was waiting to see what the "14th gen " had and now im prety confused. It will be focused on games and heavy softwares likes Agisoft Metashape to produce point clouds etc... The 7950X seems pretty great for both productivity and gaming, maybe the 7950X3D ? I never went AMD before, it will be 7950X/X3D or 13900/14900k.
For productivity, Intel is better, especially for video editing. Now, most phones and cameras are using HEVC or H.265 codec, which AMD doesn't support, but Intel has built-in encoding and decoding engine in their process starting from 12th gen. I am also keen to build a pc for productivity, mostly for editing videos as well as photo editing, but video editing is more important for me, so I have done a bit of search regarding which system would be best to HEVC editing. Which is some take a lot of processing to have smooth play back during editing. Mac also has built-in encoding and decoding in their processors. But I will go for PC using intel simply because I will get a lot more for my budget. Although AMD seems better on efficiency, lack of H.265 support put me off, even AMD graphics still behind for these types of codec support.
The 14900K isn't a lot more efficient than people think. Most people will assume that it gained a little bit so that it basically uses about the same power the 13900K uses but running a little faster and that's exactly what it does. Techpowerup has a very detailed breakdown of power consumption across different apps and games and it's basically what Intel said it would be for power consumption, runs a little faster using the same power. So good for Intel, they have a BLAZING fast "Intel 7" which is about the same for MTr/mm2 as TSMC N7 or Samsung 7N, so we can call them all a 7nm node even though that doesn't mean anything. There's no way I buy these CPUs though just like I wouldn't buy any Intel CPU based on Intel 7 because they consume too much power. I'll wait and see what "Intel 4" does for Intel, and hopefully the power consumption drops a LOT, like more than 50% otherwise AMD is still going to kick their ass using a bit less power. I mean when gaming with the fastest AMD CPU means using about 50W on avg. across different games and the 14900K uses about 145W, that's mass destruction. That's not a LITTLE beat down. That's serious BUTT STOMPING, and AMD is doing that with a 7800X3D which beats the 14900K by a little over 10% on avg. in gaming. So, about 1/3 the power consumption, 10% more performance. BUTT STOMPING. But I also wouldn't but Zen 4 or 5 because their MCM architecture has real problems.
Very refreshing, when most reviewers are using high power draw for clickbait. Its efficiency goes through the roof when you limit power to like 65w or less. The -T with TDP respected would be very interesting. The 13900T desktop chip has the efficiency of the 12th gen laptop chips.
Guild wars 2 dragons end zone is the heaviest benchmark, two full squads (2x50) and everybody casting spells like firebots, everything on max settings and your fps goes brrrrrrrrrr from 85-90 to 30.
No chance to replace my current 5800x3d right?... I don't like the recent processors from AMD because they run much too hot and I'm interested in silence and those from intel are the same...I hope that future generations will be more normal
Here is my issue that I am facing right now. I want to upgrade this year as I am running an i9 9900K @5ghz all core, 16GB ddr4, Asus Strix 3080 TI, 850w psu, asus strix z390 motherboard and 2xgen 3 m.2 samsung drives. I want to fully upgrade everything except GPU. No matter what platform I go, its going to be a solid upgrade. But 14th gen is on it's last legs with the current socket, AM5 has all the gen 5 pcie lanes that I want that intel currently lacks, AM5 has a problem with system memory >6000MHz. I just bought Corsairs Dominator Titanium ram rated for 7000MT/s. So between Intels lack of PCIe lanes for gen5 ssds and AMD's issues with high memory frequency and ungodly long boot times, im stuck waiting another year potentially to upgrade!
You've got nothing to worry about with long boot times on AM5 (7900+6750XT user). Sure, it's longer than we're used to, but after multiple BIOS updates, it's significantly better than at release date and honestly, you'll get used to it and forget its there. High frequency memory is the only tricky one.
It looks like my Skatterbencher OC 7950X is safe for now… also 7950X beats the 7950X3D in every workload outside of gaming with little effort. Not bad from Intel, but somewhat underwhelmed with Meteor Lake/ Raptor Refresh compared to Raptor Lakes massive leap over Alder Lake.
The 7950x3d is a terrible CPU. It’s a 16 core 32 SMT CPU. However in order to do 3D v cache it cuts the cores in half to 8 core 16 SMT. So your over paying in order to use half of the cores to take advantage of 3D v cache. The only zen 4 CPU’s that make sense is the 7600, 7800x3d and 7950x.

Have you tried the new intel update in bios 253w in the cooling settings unlimited makes it heat up to much due to the power it draws limit it abit will be fine 😊

Sorry but AMD is ok, but AM5 is way too unstable. I built 4, 7800x3d systems for me and my kids. Every week I was having to recalibrate in bios. I sold all of them and bought Intel 13700k and the my have been rock solid stable with max overclocks zero issues . AMD needs to do a lot of work on there stability issues. But I do agree that Intel is just crazy with all the redesigns it’s completely in called for.
So, we're at the point where CPUs run at water boiling temperatures while chugging electricity for just a little bit more performance. Not a big fan of that. I haven't being paying attention to releases since last year, but this ain't it chief.
HOW INTEL STOLE $285 from me? I bought an open box Core i9 from the largest vendor in the US and maybe the world. The CPU did not work so I sent it to Intel for warranty repair or replace because the model itself was less than a year old so it must be under warranty. Open box and demo units are treated like new by manufacturers regarding warranty. Intel told me that the CPU was not genuine and refused to return it. The vendor said they will refund me if I send the CPU back. Intel refused. So Intel, the crook, & the vendor profited and the victim paid the price. Later I found out that CPU lids can be swapped as long as they are the same socket. So if you have a dead Celeron lid swapped with a new i9 lid, then return the dead Celeron for an i9 refund and keep the i9 CPU. That is a serious design flaw that Intel should pay for not the victims. Intel have not changed the flawed design on their latest models.
Never buy used or open box cpus. This is why i dont trust used computer gear at all. If its not new im not buying it when it comes to cpu or gpu. THOSE have to be new
Intel should switch to 5 nm production technology as soon as possible. AMD produces the X3D processor of any CPUs as whatever they like and easily beats any Intel processor in games in price/performance and mostly in FPS. Since Intel only increases performance by 5-10% in each generation, AMD no longer feels the need to push itself and do better. This situation negatively affects us players.

Iv always been on intel systems because with my limited tech knowledge I know they will just work. That being said I always go for a setup one or two gens behind the latest releases to get the best bang for my buck. I would not touch the 13-14th gen chips knowing that they are end of life platforms now. I am interested in what comes next from Intel but my current i9 9900k, 2080TI still does everything I need it to and has never skipped a beat. If I was changing right now though I would definitely give the latest AMD offerings a shot knowing its probably two years or more till intels next gen architecture has proven itself.
AMD will also just work, cooler and more efficient. Intel is becoming hot and inefficient. Just get a 7800X3D and it will trump most games, even with Intel's latest and greatest 14900K 390+ watts TDP.

Also perf/watt graph will be very useful if you could include it in future videos. Imo perf/watt graph is one of the best ways to see the improvement of the chip
13 gen i5 in my area is now dirt cheap…thts the only benefit of 14th gen for me…now i can upgrade from my 8th gen i5 to 12/13 gen i7/i5 or even i9 easily❤
My impression is that this is a “review” bios that will be scaled back in future revisions once these chips are Sold. This was done to get good initial reviews. Just like apple and the iPhone 15 pro.
Thanks I really needed that. I'm doing research for my next build. Although I play games I'm also a creator and need the right hardware for Photoshop, lightroom and third party imaging software. If, this generation is a dead end then perhaps I should wait.

There's something fishy going on with core temperatures on this CPU, probably has to do with different motherboards and their voltage handling... Some reviewers like Gamers Nexus and Hardware Canucks getting well under 80C, while Paul's Hardware and Hardware Unboxed at 100C, even with power limits on a 360mm AIO.

I don't think anyone even believes their bs anymore. It's only comparable to AMD when unlocked to 300W. The price of electricity for that is ridiculous. Just go 7950x if you don't play games. If you do go 7950x3d (assuming you need many cores) or 7800x3d if all you care about is games. Even for productivity, it's bad. You can't use avx512 instr. if you have e-cores enabled. It's actually insane how long intel stayed in 14nm. Same thing with how they held us hostage with 4c 8t cpus for 8 years? I7-920 (cpu in my first home built computer) to the i7-8700k, which was my second computer oddly enough.

This is an outstanding review and is the first I've seen that helps me truly understand the 14900K compared to the 13900K and the 7950X. In the real-world performance section starting at around minute 6:00, what is the power consumption of the AMD 7950X in the multi-core tests like Cinebench R23? It's my understanding from this review the power consumption of the 14900K (with Intel Limits) is 253W for those benchmarks. From tests I've seen on the 7950X I believe it is drawing similar power when the 7950X is full-throttle on multi-core tests. If so, then this makes the 14900K cooling requirements about the same as 7950X with the Intel limits on for the 14900K. Is this an accurate takeaway? If so, then I see this as the 14900K possibly having a slight edge over the 7950X due to other advantages like stability with higher speed RAM.

In my opinion increased performance with increased power consumption doesn’t count. I can overlock any chip with more voltage and get faster clocks and better performance. Improve your IPC and efficiency if you want me to care. Especially since the IHSs are becoming too small and it’s simply becoming impossible to transfer enough heat through them.

I am coming from an I9 9900k. I do a little bit of gaming and light 4k video editing. I am currently in the process of doing a 14900k build mainly for video editing and some VR gaming. I am still keeping my 9900k for gaming and other things as it is still a very capable CPU.

People are so caught on about the improvement between 13900k and 14900k…. Meanwhile, there’s people out there with much worse CPUs who are just looking for an upgrade. Going from 5600x to 14900k would be such a big upgrade for me.

I could do with a couple of extra cores.... but do I need to spend so much to get it? Nope... but I could buy yours off you for peanuts and get a similar gain but for a fraction of the price. Which is the better position? Buying yours off you for peanuts. Why? Because the costs outweigh the gains now, even for me.

I got the 14900K for $389 on Amazon. And it shreds 4K transcodes in my PLEX Server. It acts like nothing is going on when it transcodes. I haven’t had that level of performance with any other CPU. Granted I’m coming from the 11900k which is now being used with a 3080ti strictly for gaming. But my PLEX Server running Windows 11 is a beast now with the 14900K. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for all this time. I’m sure it’s not the best option for gaming, but for PLEX with Windows 11? It’s a champ. Great video by the way. 😎👍

it is indeed a beast I use it for exactly the same use case with an rtx 4070, wish I would've done a little more research and gotten a rtx 3080ti and a shorter base length because it blocks two slots for my Toshiba MG08ACATEY's which I DID do research on those, they have the lowest 15TB failure rates with over 1,000 drives sampled unlike seagate with 3% and up failure rates.

Absolutely... not just currently but they should've focused on this since the last few generations. AMD might draw more power on Idle conditions but under load Intel just burns through your energy bill like crazy. Intel is a no go for efficient computers sadly.

@@keenerz Intel significantly improved operating temperatures for that chip. It ran 4.0 ghz baseclock 4.4 boost, with only 88w power consumption. 4770k was 84 watts with 3.5 ghz baseclock and 3.9 boost.

I did exactly what you said and waited till black Friday however the 13900k was not discounted and the 14900k was discounted. In fact it was discounted below the 13900k by almost $80. Seeing as I was currently on a 12700kf I jumped and bought it. However now when I tell people my build I always have to explain why I went with the 14th gen i9 as I too would never buy one for MSRP if a 13900k was cheaper lol. Cheers and great video!
Your review is by far the best and most insightful review of 14900K! Your comparison of 14900K without limit and with Intel limits is really informative.
In light of your analysis, it seems 14900K seems to have been really well binned and can be made quite efficient and cool-running if you optimize LLC and AC/DC loadline in addition to enforcing Intel limits.
One thing worth mentioning though with 14th gen is the much better memory support. the IMC is better and enables higher speeds, lower latency at higher capacity than last gen. But unless you care about this I otherwise completely agree with the conclusion. Unless you need/want to be able to run 128gb+ of ram at higher speeds than you could do on 13th gen, then just go 13th gen
The "much better" is highly dependent on memory manufacturer support. It seems like low latency modules aren't a priority as manufacturers keep needlessly pushing the frequency wars.

You should always undervolt these CPU's. Most Raptor Lake CPU's can do -0.1V undervolt, which drastically drops power use and temperatures. No idea why stock voltage is so high.
Underrated comment. This is especially true if you have a z series board. I have a 13700K and 240mm aio. Hits 100C almost instantly in benchmarks at stock voltages.

Interesting that this video is actually making me feel that the 14900k is a better choice for me than the 7950x3d! I wanted some better gaming performance than my 5950x without losing productivity and it seems the 14900k excels at both evern when power limited giving me excellent Premiere performance as well as photoshop plus great 1% for games too. Better than getting the 7800x3D which will hurt my productivity or the 7950x3D which will give me less gaming performance.
I also kind of want to go back to the more stable intel drivers/platform. After moving from the 9900k to the 5950x, I enjoyed the lots of threads but stability never felt as good as the 9900k before that.
It really does. And it also excels at idling at lower power, so there is that.
I upgraded from a 5950x to 14700k and it solved so many driver bug issues. Now my computer runs much more stable and I can undervolt this chips to almost -0.1. During cyberpunk it only consumes 90 w.
6.1GHz on all P cores + 4.5GHz all E-cores after Intel’s neural network AI optimization & a lot of bios voltage tweaking on my i9 14900k begs to differ… custom water loop on 2x 360mm rads. Under 320w cinebench/occt I’m maintaining 5.7ghz/4.5ghz for HOURS on end meaning massive performance over anything else. It’s a non-argument for those of us who like to push the limit. 💪💪

Under 100% load after 10 mins in Cinebench I’m down to 5.7mhz all P cores, 4.4ghz all E cores and 4.5ghz ring. I’m not hitting the thermal limit (max CPU package temp is 93C and max P core at 93C after 10 min run), and not hitting power limit either. No throttling anywhere of any kind. 😁 I’m on a very large custom water loop with dual 360mm rads tho, and 2L of water

A few months ago I was set on getting a 7800X3D but heard about all the issues they had with RAM compatibility so it had me worried. When you put in the cost of the more expensive M/B and RAM in my case it was only around $80 more to go with a 13900K with faster RAM speed mind you, 6000 M/T vs 7800 M/T. Knowing that with Intel things would just work as it's not a new platform had me changing my mind. I just didn't want to spend $4K with a 4090 mind you just strictly for gaming. If I could pay a little more to get possible productively work out of it as well would be more of a value to me. Yeah some games would run better using AMD but to me I didn't mind as the 13900K could hold it's own as well. The only downside I saw was the power draw from Intel which I didn't like. Also the 7950X3D was not really considered as it was another $100 jump from $550 (13900K) just to get that and I was well over my budget already. I didn't want to pay more just to have worst performance in certain games vs the 7800X3D. It just didn't make any sense to me.
Looking at it now I think I made the right choice but man that 13900K sure does run hot. I'm running a 360 AIO at this time but I think I will repaste it soon as I'm using the stock pre-applied paste at this time. I'm also going to use a CPU bracket as well as I heard those work well on making better contact with the CPU. I'm sure glad I didn't want for the 14th gen CPUs though as I knew it wasn't going to be a big upgrade at all especially when I will be only gaming in 4K.

@@tyson8585 I got my 4090 first before I decided on a CPU. I heard bad things about the 7950X3D vs the 7800X3D. I was set on the 7800X3D for the longest time but saw that I could get more cores for not that much more. Yes I will be mostly gaming on it but changed my mind at the very end to make it last longer as a build. What if when I pass it on to my daughter in a few years and she takes up doing productivity work on it. It just made more sense in the long run I guess. Honestly I never really considered the 7950X3D cause yes it was more money which I was already over my budget of $3K. I could've made it happen using last gen parts but it was already past mid year and I didn't want to build something that old in my eyes that I was planning to keep for at least 5 years. Let's just say I was already set on a particular anesthetic of my build which required me to not change certain parts. At the end it came down to the CPU/MB/RAM combo. $4K on just a gaming rig was not justifiable to me but something that could do both was.
I feel like the AM5 platform needs to mature a little more for me to seriously consider it due to all the RAM issues as I mentioned before. I will probably start another build in a year or so. We'll see what both AMD and Intel have to offer then. I'm already kinda eyeing Arrow Lake tho but I'm open to see what AMD has as well as I'm a fan of their more efficient CPUs. Lets just say I have a lot more AMD CPUs at home vs Intel. AMD basically messed up the 7950X3D this year or I would've went with them for sure even with the extra cost. By the way it wasn't just $100 cause that's just the CPU difference alone. The comparable MB and RAM was more expensive as well. It was probably another $150 or so totalling around a $250 difference.
@@volcalstoneif you’re building a new system from scratch, there’s really no reason to buy an Intel CPU for gaming at the high end. Ryzen X3D consumes a third of the power of the 13900K while providing equal or better performance in almost all games. This is what this video concludes, as well.

I have new settings which I am using for my i9-13900k and i9-14900k. I don’t like the uncertainty of undervolting so prefer working with power and clock limits. With these settings I got a couple of FPS BETTER on CP2077 and Forza Horizon Benchmark, went from 99th to 98th percentile on PC Mark Extended, passed the Time Spy Stress Test, Time Spy was within a whisker of the average for my hardware, Cinebench R23 finished between 37-38000, CPU-Z, Intel Diag tool and Prime95 was stable and < 90 degrees.
MCE off, PL1 and PL2 limit to 225, limit P-core boost to 5.3 GHz and E-core boost to 4.0GHz, and use balanced power profile in Windows (although I do disable core parking to keep system highly responsive). Oh and just XMP on the RAM. I didn’t change LLC or voltage offset values.
With these settings, you should have no stability issues, be able to run on an air cooler like the NH-D15 (what I use on my 3 i9 13th/14th gen systems) and will barely notice any performance changes in gaming or productivity.
Update: I have now set voltage offset at a modest -0.010v. I have disabled the C6&C7 C states and EIST. I have then increated max P core clock to 5.5GHz and E cores to 4.3GHz. Lastly I have locked AVX at 0 offset. I have tested on P95/CB R23 and CB R15. All great and in a mid 20 degree room, no workload exceeds 80c on package or cores. Happy Bunny!
Update 2: I have now undervolted to -0.015v and set the Core limit to 300 Amps. Performance is still good.
I ended up buying the Intel 14900K with a 360 mm liquid cooler. I ended up getting the aces dark hero motherboard. I used AI overclocking knowing very little about temps. After seeing my temps shoot up under load I started looking into it. I'm still not sure how I should run this CPU I am pushing it pretty hard for 8K and 4K video editing. Right now it's running at 6.2 GHz and 192 GB of DDR5 running at around 5400 no errors in memtest 64

Everyone has a different opinion it seems. He's running it at Auto no limits. My CPU is getting to 99° and stress test that way... I have a 360 mil liquid cooler
From what i can tell the reason in the temp differences appear to be voltage as HWUB seemed to see the 149 run at slightly lower voltage than the 139 did. Thats not saying much as you can prob undervolt the 139 yourself. it still hits TJmax and will throttle w/ all core workloads, but runs under 100 due to the voltage drop. So an OC plus with an undervolt. Clearly your video shows that. And HWub found a clear larger power draw on the 14900k in CP2077 so something is off there too. Maybe board variance? Not sure.
Due to the process node improvements I mentioned, it only makes sense than you could run these newer chips at an overall lower voltage. However, thermal output is largely based off the usual power combination of amperage x voltage. These 14th Gen chips might use less voltage but they also have increased amperage needs.
@@HardwareCanucks Depends on the load you run. Seems blender stresses it less than cinebench. HWUB found cinebench to push it further than the 13900k power wise as well as in most games they tested (thermal throttling on an AIO cooler). Voltage differences may not be enough to explain it. Perhaps MB variance here. Did you do cinebench 2024 runs at all? It could also be the interface w/ the IHS is a bit better too to explain temperatures. IM not sure if they improved the thermal solution in general.

I have been using an Intel i5-4690K 3.50 GHz processor for the past 10 years, and I am planning to build an entirely new high-end computer to keep up with the power requirements of the latest software 😅. Well, I'm not disagreeing with your recommendation. However, I don't think AM5 will get the long term support that AM4 did - my gut says we will only see two generations of CPU's on AM5 (vs 3 + one refresh (Zen+) on AM4).
Yes that's the impression I have, Zen 6 will be a very different cpu and that could mean a new platform is needed. So that would mean only 2 generations for AM5. But I could wrong.

But historically speaking, AMD usually is good with socket life and providing some form of inter-generational compatibility. AM2 through AM3+ was pretty good for having some flexibility given that the socket for all intents and purposes didn't change a huge amount leaving a bit of inter-generational flexibility. Socket 7 (Super 7) was very long lived... Perhaps a little too long, but still. AMD hasn't had all that many short lived sockets overall - the only two I can think of off hand being Slot A & s940 for very short life. Even s939 lasted a little longer then I originally thought as did s754.

No one buys that kind of hardware to run games at 1080P. The story changes at higher resolutions of which you haven't covered.
For people looking at that idiotic comparing of CPUs in gaming... Keep in mind that's 1080p. Nobody gonna buy 14900K nor 7850X3D ($800 CPUs) for 1080p gaming. These CPUs are made for 4090 graphic cards which actually has lower FPS than lower cost graphic cards in 1080p. 14900K + 4090 are made for 4k and wide/ultrawide gaming. In this field, Intel destroys 7850X3D from AMD.
...Which is why it's so dumb to compare these CPUs in 1080p and even compare it to 7800X mid budget CPU from AMD that is made for 1080p gaming.
I am personally buying right now $11k setup with new Samsung Odyssey G9 - 57", 7680x2160 (2*4k, almost 8k), 240Hz. You can guess if I am gonna use $800 CPU from AMD for low to mid budget gaming or $800 CPU from Intel which excels in 4k and above gaming. :))

Alderlake and Raptor Lake is pretty much just the same processor in IPC performance as Hardware unboxed clocked 12th, 13th, and 14th gen processors with the same clock speed and found no difference in performance between the three it just means that the 13th gen and 14th gen were just highly overclocked versions of the 12th Gen with more e-cores added in.

Why wouldn't be using GPU acceleration in After Effects? Also, AE absolutely loves memory capacity so that's the first thing you should be maxing out.

The wattage during gaming is all I need. I’m now living on my own so now efficiency is the most important spec for me. Why have a monster cpu when the competition has nearly the same performance at almost half the power draw.
Same with gpu I currently have a 3070 and it still gives me good performance without the risk of burning my house down or needing a nuclear reactor to power it.
You will use more wattage per fps 60% of the time every time. 😂

If your i9-14900K consumes 177W while gaming (as this video claims at 7:59), you'll consume 1.06 kWH over a 6 hour gaming session. The USA average electricity price 23 cents per kWH, so you've spent almost a quarter. If you play a 6 hour session every day, all 7 days of the week for an entire month, those quarters add up to almost $7.50. Even if you live in a part of Europe like Netherlands or Belgium where electricity is 0.40 to 0.50 Euro per kWH, a full month of long gaming sessions every single day still costs only a tiny fraction of the price of an Intel i9-14900K + cooler + motherboard.
I was forced to buy a new motherboard when I upgraded to what I'm currently running; a 13600K just a few months ago. (Upgraded from a 9400F, LOL!) I'm glad to see that the 14-series uses the same socket, but do you think it would be worth it for me to upgrade to the 14900K in a couple of year's time? Can't lie, I'm leaning towards probably waiting for 15th gen where I will, sadly, be forced to buy a new motherboard yet again... Sigh... Sucks that I'll only be able to use this Z790 mobo for just 1 freakin' CPU generation. Ah well, I'll probably just go for the 15700K; to up the SKU one level as well; from __600K to __700K. In gonna be honest here, you don’t really need upgrades, so leave it for say 5 years when its getting quite laggy then upgrade

I am looking for a solid gaming/productivity PC, what would you recomend ? I was waiting to see what the "14th gen " had and now im prety confused. It will be focused on games and heavy softwares likes Agisoft Metashape to produce point clouds etc...
The 7950X seems pretty great for both productivity and gaming, maybe the 7950X3D ? I never went AMD before, it will be 7950X/X3D or 13900/14900k.
For productivity, Intel is better, especially for video editing. Now, most phones and cameras are using HEVC or H.265 codec, which AMD doesn't support, but Intel has built-in encoding and decoding engine in their process starting from 12th gen.
I am also keen to build a pc for productivity, mostly for editing videos as well as photo editing, but video editing is more important for me, so I have done a bit of search regarding which system would be best to HEVC editing. Which is some take a lot of processing to have smooth play back during editing.
Mac also has built-in encoding and decoding in their processors.
But I will go for PC using intel simply because I will get a lot more for my budget.
Although AMD seems better on efficiency, lack of H.265 support put me off, even AMD graphics still behind for these types of codec support.

The 14900K isn't a lot more efficient than people think. Most people will assume that it gained a little bit so that it basically uses about the same power the 13900K uses but running a little faster and that's exactly what it does. Techpowerup has a very detailed breakdown of power consumption across different apps and games and it's basically what Intel said it would be for power consumption, runs a little faster using the same power. So good for Intel, they have a BLAZING fast "Intel 7" which is about the same for MTr/mm2 as TSMC N7 or Samsung 7N, so we can call them all a 7nm node even though that doesn't mean anything.
There's no way I buy these CPUs though just like I wouldn't buy any Intel CPU based on Intel 7 because they consume too much power. I'll wait and see what "Intel 4" does for Intel, and hopefully the power consumption drops a LOT, like more than 50% otherwise AMD is still going to kick their ass using a bit less power. I mean when gaming with the fastest AMD CPU means using about 50W on avg. across different games and the 14900K uses about 145W, that's mass destruction. That's not a LITTLE beat down. That's serious BUTT STOMPING, and AMD is doing that with a 7800X3D which beats the 14900K by a little over 10% on avg. in gaming. So, about 1/3 the power consumption, 10% more performance. BUTT STOMPING.
But I also wouldn't but Zen 4 or 5 because their MCM architecture has real problems.
Very refreshing, when most reviewers are using high power draw for clickbait. Its efficiency goes through the roof when you limit power to like 65w or less. The -T with TDP respected would be very interesting. The 13900T desktop chip has the efficiency of the 12th gen laptop chips.
Guild wars 2 dragons end zone is the heaviest benchmark, two full squads (2x50) and everybody casting spells like firebots, everything on max settings and your fps goes brrrrrrrrrr from 85-90 to 30.
No chance to replace my current 5800x3d right?... I don't like the recent processors from AMD because they run much too hot and I'm interested in silence and those from intel are the same...I hope that future generations will be more normal
Here is my issue that I am facing right now.
I want to upgrade this year as I am running an i9 9900K @5ghz all core, 16GB ddr4, Asus Strix 3080 TI, 850w psu, asus strix z390 motherboard and 2xgen 3 m.2 samsung drives. I want to fully upgrade everything except GPU. No matter what platform I go, its going to be a solid upgrade. But 14th gen is on it's last legs with the current socket, AM5 has all the gen 5 pcie lanes that I want that intel currently lacks, AM5 has a problem with system memory >6000MHz. I just bought Corsairs Dominator Titanium ram rated for 7000MT/s. So between Intels lack of PCIe lanes for gen5 ssds and AMD's issues with high memory frequency and ungodly long boot times, im stuck waiting another year potentially to upgrade!
My 7800x3d bios time is 16s, you just simply turn "Memory Context Restore" on in bios.
You've got nothing to worry about with long boot times on AM5 (7900+6750XT user).
Sure, it's longer than we're used to, but after multiple BIOS updates, it's significantly better than at release date and honestly, you'll get used to it and forget its there.
High frequency memory is the only tricky one.

It looks like my Skatterbencher OC 7950X is safe for now… also 7950X beats the 7950X3D in every workload outside of gaming with little effort. Not bad from Intel, but somewhat underwhelmed with Meteor Lake/ Raptor Refresh compared to Raptor Lakes massive leap over Alder Lake.
The 7950x3d is a terrible CPU. It’s a 16 core 32 SMT CPU. However in order to do 3D v cache it cuts the cores in half to 8 core 16 SMT. So your over paying in order to use half of the cores to take advantage of 3D v cache. The only zen 4 CPU’s that make sense is the 7600, 7800x3d and 7950x.

Sorry but AMD is ok, but AM5 is way too unstable. I built 4, 7800x3d systems for me and my kids. Every week I was having to recalibrate in bios. I sold all of them and bought Intel 13700k and the my have been rock solid stable with max overclocks zero issues . AMD needs to do a lot of work on there stability issues. But I do agree that Intel is just crazy with all the redesigns it’s completely in called for.
So, we're at the point where CPUs run at water boiling temperatures while chugging electricity for just a little bit more performance. Not a big fan of that. I haven't being paying attention to releases since last year, but this ain't it chief.

HOW INTEL STOLE $285 from me? I bought an open box Core i9 from the largest vendor in the US and maybe the world. The CPU did not work so I sent it to Intel for warranty repair or replace because the model itself was less than a year old so it must be under warranty. Open box and demo units are treated like new by manufacturers regarding warranty. Intel told me that the CPU was not genuine and refused to return it. The vendor said they will refund me if I send the CPU back. Intel refused. So Intel, the crook, & the vendor profited and the victim paid the price.
Later I found out that CPU lids can be swapped as long as they are the same socket. So if you have a dead Celeron lid swapped with a new i9 lid, then return the dead Celeron for an i9 refund and keep the i9 CPU. That is a serious design flaw that Intel should pay for not the victims. Intel have not changed the flawed design on their latest models.

Intel should switch to 5 nm production technology as soon as possible. AMD produces the X3D processor of any CPUs as whatever they like and easily beats any Intel processor in games in price/performance and mostly in FPS. Since Intel only increases performance by 5-10% in each generation, AMD no longer feels the need to push itself and do better. This situation negatively affects us players.

Iv always been on intel systems because with my limited tech knowledge I know they will just work. That being said I always go for a setup one or two gens behind the latest releases to get the best bang for my buck. I would not touch the 13-14th gen chips knowing that they are end of life platforms now. I am interested in what comes next from Intel but my current i9 9900k, 2080TI still does everything I need it to and has never skipped a beat. If I was changing right now though I would definitely give the latest AMD offerings a shot knowing its probably two years or more till intels next gen architecture has proven itself.

There's something fishy going on with core temperatures on this CPU, probably has to do with different motherboards and their voltage handling...
Some reviewers like Gamers Nexus and Hardware Canucks getting well under 80C, while Paul's Hardware and Hardware Unboxed at 100C, even with power limits on a 360mm AIO.
I just unboxed mine yesterday and I have hit 100 a few times running MW3 and what not with a 360mm AIO. Currently in the process of figuring that out

I don't think anyone even believes their bs anymore. It's only comparable to AMD when unlocked to 300W. The price of electricity for that is ridiculous. Just go 7950x if you don't play games. If you do go 7950x3d (assuming you need many cores) or 7800x3d if all you care about is games. Even for productivity, it's bad. You can't use avx512 instr. if you have e-cores enabled. Fuck intel lately, seriously. Im a 12900kf owner btw, ill wait for next amd series unless intel makes a good chip again.
I think you take big mistake - you use 6000 Mhz RAM on both CPU. But if 7800x3d not have boost afrer 6000Mhz RAM, Intel have much FPS on 8000Mhz RAM
