A piece of art, this D’Angelico guitar, a stunning headstock, uniquely stylistic locking tuners, the clear volume & tone knobs, an outstanding lacquered finish, mother of pearl fret inlays & nice quality pickups....
I've had an excel SS for a decade which I upgraded with lollar imperial pickups. It's a professional level guitar, everything about it is high level. Plays like a dream, tone for days, solidly built, resists seasonal changes amazingly well and can cover a huge amount of ground from nasty screaming tones to vintage jazz tones. D'angelico makes one hell of a great guitar.
I got my first semi hollowbody about 6 months ago. It's a Premier DC , larger size of what you're playing. Amazing guitar! Love playing it. Thanks for the video, Landon!
i just got the exact same guitar, today, 11 months after this video. agree on the fit and finish, the fret ends are perfect right out of the box. it's the only guitar i ever bought that i can say that about. i'm not a giant fan of the pots, but i can live with them for now. i think the action was a little high, and the nut is cut a little more shallow than i like.. easily adjusted, no big deal. but for the set up it came with, it was well intonated, zero nut binding. i can think of lots of other brands who could learn something from the budget line dangelico. the bottom line is, the price is competitive for what the guitar is intended, but it stands alone in bang for your buck. i'm glad i was able to get the sweetwater version for this reason. if sweetwater ever folds, we're all doomed. no one else comes close
Great review thanks! Been eyeing D'Angelico for a while. By far the mist beautiful headstocks on any guitar. Some of the other models have very big pickguards which I don't like but this one is gorgeous in every way 😍
These D'Angelico guitars are just freaking awesome and man, they sent you over a beauty. I love the way they look, play and sound. Good thing I hung around for another day, eh.
@Landon you being a single coil player most of the times. Do you find the pickups a bit to dark? I do a bit in this demo, even through a princeton amp thet sound like lacking some top end

Re the strap button. It has to be positioned where the solid part of the Guitar wood is present, otherwise it would wear a hole through the hollow part of the Guitar & it wouldn’t take long! Enjoyed the video. Thanks!!
I love these small-body semi’s. I was always interested in ES-355’s, but disliked the weight and the big butt. We should all give Gibson a shout-out for the ES-339, because it has been the catalyst for a bunch of wonderful spin-offs like Landon’s D’Angelico, my Epiphone Casino Coupe, etc. Even Collings makes them now. Their acoustics are amazing I have one of their old delancy's which are now out of production and it has a crack in the heal at the glue sceme and need to get it fixed but can't find nobody they are amazing 💯💯💯💯💯
I also have a D'Angerlico SS gold hard ware with Kent Armstrong 57 Humbucker Set picked one up in 2015 has a black and grey flame top with a rosewood neck really happy with it great tones
The D' names are Italian; it just means 'of' like 'de' in French and Spanish. In front of a consonant it's 'di', in front of a vowel it's just d with an apostrophe and it's one syllable, not two. My guess is that Jimmy D'Aquisto didn't really have the business acumen to run an actual guitar company; he was a guitar maker and a very well-renowned one but not a businessman. His main apprentice is a Mr Monteleone who is still making guitars (Mark Knopfler has one and wrote a song about them) but he hasn't been able to find an apprentice. I guess people aren't that interested in archtop acoustic guitars anymore; people who play acoustic want flat-tops and that's where the skill is now.
Really like this guitar. I think the body size is clever & the headstock although verging on ostentatious bling, just remains on the right side of tastefully unique. Let's go with Italian flair. 🍕 I think the price seems fair, haven't checked prices out here and assume it's Asian made (somewhere). Be nice if you told us the place of manufacture. It can't be a deep dive without that info. 😳 Clean tones sounded a bit muddy actually, perhaps the recording or maybe that's just those humbuckers. All in all a sweet package and solid review. 👌😎 And in case you're wondering....I say keep...you've not got a hollow body. 🎶🎶🎶
I was so distracted by the headstock beauty that I didn't read the label. It's made in Indonesia. One trick I use to check the country manufacture is to look at the photo gallery on Sweetwater, you can always see it there. cheers!
@@landonbailey Thanks Lando..👍 I don't often go to Sweetwater as it's no use to me, but trick of the trade noted. Rule of thumb for me is when country of manufacture isn't noted with an online listing it's Asian. I'm liking what the Indonesians are producing generally. And they often seem to get some upper level gear, such as hand wired amps. Fact remains I'm still stuck on the headstock close up, so haven't been able to do any research. Luckily, I can still respond to your message here. 🙋
Years later...but a few things... This guitar was priced the same as every other retailer, but this exclusive gave you the nice flame tops, real USA Seymour Duncans (the excellent hotrodded set), and locking tuners. Now they're asking $200 more for them, but the upgrades are worth it.
Landon I think that the price point is a bit higher than others of about the same caliber then again it seems to be a well built guitar..... Again thank you for your time for this awesome video .... Love your show ....... and that you are a devoted telecaster guy .... 😁
You’re blatantly wrong. If by “caliber” you mean budget guitars, then sure. Otherwise, this guitar demolishes most other brands’ budget line guitars and is more comparable to the guitars at this same price point. This Sweetwater exclusive version honestly isn’t even really comparable to the other Premiers. It’s bordering on an Excel.
I have to agree with you with these guitars. I have a DC Excel guitar and it really is far better than any Gibson 335 that I have ever played. One of the nicest semi-hollows out there.
You play beautifully and, once I got through all the BS humor and you started playing, you really showcased this guitar well. Nicely done. It's very clear you had no idea about this company's history, so people will have to go elsewhere for a legit story. Strap button is in the place where a traditional full sized semi-hollow body guitar would be back in the 50s and earlier.
I'm here from two years in the future. I'm sure you've made your decision, but for anyone else, this is sized much closer to a 339. D'Angelico makes a larger hollowbody that competes with the 335 - and they make a more premium version than this "Premier". It's their very fine Deluxe line.
that headstock is so epic i can't even think of a tongue-in-cheek comment. i dunno if you still have it, but maybe it could go into a video of dope headstocks to accompany the worst headstocks video?
Landon reminds me of Norm Mcdonald. He's got a similar humour style. And also Windows stop telling me I'm spelling humour wrong. I live in Canada dammit!
@@stratolestele7611 Why? If D'Angelico can't be bothered to tell me why one guitar sounds different than the other then why should I bother? In fact it might make me think that there is no difference in those guitars.
When pronouncing Italian names that begin with a capital D’, followed by a vowel, forget that the apostrophe is there. It’s pronounced “Dangelico” or “Daddario” not Dee Angelico. Hate to get picky but…😎🎸🇨🇦
It is truly weird. You can't really argue with the company reps, but if it's dangelico one word in Italian, I can't see how it becomes Di Angelico two words in American. DiMarzio, DeStefano, fine, that's how it's spelled and pronounced in original italian. It's like Landon saying his name is Bailey in Canadian, then Americans saying "yeh, that might be how you pronounce it over there, but we're choosing to say it's Buh-ailey in this country". That would just be arbitrary and stupid 😜
Leo: I grew up on the south side of Chicago, my whole old neighborhood smells like garlic, and Pasta was the center of every meal. The d apostrophe means "of" , so the name would be "of (or from) Angelico, which would likely be a famous or powerful family. Fra Angeico was a famous artist in the 1400's. We all said "d' whatever when pronouncing each others family name. I guess the pronunciations could be regional. How would you possibly address Mr d' Melliio , Mr d'Rizzo, , Mr d'Conti, etc. without saying "dee"?
@@barbmelle3136 (Lesson learned, don't put a link in a reply, it gets deleted lol) If the family name begins with a vowel it's usually d'. D'Amat, D'Addario, D'Angelico, D'Elia. There are some Italian examples that are explicitly spelled out without apostrophes - De Angelis. If it isn't a vowel its de/di/da/del. They would be De Melliio, Di Rizzo, Niccolò De Conti, De Vito, Di Marzio etc. So I can see how De Angelis is explicitly dee angelis - they chose to override the vowel abbreviation. But I can't see how "D'Angelico if you're Italian" can at the same time be Dee Angelico completely ignoring the Italian pronunciation if you're American. The Americans created the Simplified Spelling Board to reform English spelling and eliminate what they considered inconsistencies - but it seems Americans have just introduced inconsistencies where there were none. But it's just a weird curiosity. It doesn't really matter to me if they want to say an Italian name the way an Italian wouldnt. 😉
Nice, can’t sleep so why not watch this at 2am, works overrated anyway, and have no care about my alarm goin off at 5.30 am....Until 5.30 am where future me won’t be so happy about this decision 😫🎸

Yes, this guitar is on my list to try. An alternative to a Gibson 335 🙏
Go for it!
I'm here from two years in the future.
I'm sure you've made your decision, but for anyone else, this is sized much closer to a 339. D'Angelico makes a larger hollowbody that competes with the 335 - and they make a more premium version than this "Premier". It's their very fine Deluxe line.
Supro also makes pickups other than amps
I suggest you check out Harmony and Yamaha Sir.
And yes , I know you gots a Yamaha acoustic.
That's a beautiful D'Angelico!!!
✌👽🎸🎼🎵🎶🧠🌌♾
Cool, thanks!
that headstock is so epic i can't even think of a tongue-in-cheek comment. i dunno if you still have it, but maybe it could go into a video of dope headstocks to accompany the worst headstocks video?
Thanks for content! cool
Thanks for watching!
Man that is Nice !!
totally recommend checking them out!
Notable zings;
"I founded it!!"
"Not Available till Mid May"
"Right here, there you are, over there"
I always thought the word founded sounds like something a little kid would say
@@landonbailey this is very much true. My son says that all the time no mater how many times I correct him.
Uniq sound sir nice👍
Landon reminds me of Norm Mcdonald. He's got a similar humour style. And also Windows stop telling me I'm spelling humour wrong. I live in Canada dammit!
he was my favourite comedian
He's a good man
@Landon Bailey sent me here!
sounds like something I would do
Ha I thought you were gonna deny us the peeling of the plastic covers !
it was the only one on the guitar 😆🎸
@@landonbailey Save the best till last ! I like it !
I want da big version. Big box seller on eBay made me an offer to buy for $391 US. 😳😎
I like smaller light hollow bodies.
I have two DANGELICO S. lovely. Check out the premier version of the Bob Weir Bedford👍🏿
nice guitars!
Crazy to spend that much. You can get an Epiphone, Ibanez, Gretsch, not to mention Harley Benton.
you mentioned Harley Benton 😆
Try one before commenting.

Why? If D'Angelico can't be bothered to tell me why one guitar sounds different than the other then why should I bother? In fact it might make me think that there is no difference in those guitars.
Ah, so you do play some lead guitar👍😎
I guess a little, but that's the best I've got
@@landonbailey Also, who is Bill?
I'll need more info
Good to hear you're writing music again Landon. Cool tune, but I think the lead guitar was too high in the mix. Very pretty guitar too
that sound engineer is toast! 🎸😝
Dive into the f-holes lol, I was dying 😂
because they are like pools
@@landonbailey I don’t know why I am so immature at 40 but I still laugh at fart jokes and f-hole jokes
Suspiciously VERY similar to Epiphone ES-339's. Likely made in the same factory.
next time I'm in a shop, I'll have a look to see how it compares
When pronouncing Italian names that begin with a capital D’, followed by a vowel, forget that the apostrophe is there. It’s pronounced “Dangelico” or “Daddario” not Dee Angelico. Hate to get picky but…😎🎸🇨🇦
th-cam.com/video/SX71wmIijYc/w-d-xo.html 👍
@@barbmelle3136
(Lesson learned, don't put a link in a reply, it gets deleted lol)
If the family name begins with a vowel it's usually d'.
