I love the structure of the flashback. Ellie starts by getting sent to basically the principal's office, and he tells her she has two choices; Ellie & Riley get bit at the end, and Riley says they have two choices; each time, Ellie takes a third option. Mortal Kombat is presented as the pinnacle of fun for them, then they face the horror of actual mortal combat.
Also, fuck Craig and Neil for using "Take On Me" for Ellie & Riley. That was just mean.
(Still sung along to it louder than I should have, but of course I would, it's "Take On Me"...)
Storm Reid, Nico Parker, Keivonn Woodward, all 3 made us fall in love with their characters in one episode and destroyed us with their ends. This show is turning out some quality fuckin actors.

Very smart choice to not show Riley die at the end just like the game. We can put the pieces together. That isn’t the point. The point is that we end on Riley talking about how important it is to keep fighting to spend time with the ones we love, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Then using Riley’s words as inspiration for Ellie to keep on fighting to spend as much time with Joel was so good. The shot of Joel and Ellie holding hands, harkening back to Riley and Ellie holding hands was so impactful. This show is able to make a simple hand hold feel like a big crowd pleasing moment. It’s so good. All things considered, I feel like this is a very happy ending. Yeah tragedy happens of course, but they tease the beauty inside of the tragedy, and to me that is the core of The Last of Us. The beauty encased within the tragedy that allows us to be greater than what we suffer.

I got stitches when I was in pre-school. Busted my chin wide open falling going up some stairs. I was too young for anesthesia, so they put me in a straight jacket and sewed me up. Most traumatic experience of my life and I’ll never forget it. I don’t envy Joel here.
I split my chin open leaning on a counter in a change room. I went to the hospital and they taped me up, healed just fine. Sorry to hear what happened to you.
Just curious obviously it would have been insanely painful and im sorry you had to go through that. But was it like a stinging burning kinda pain? Just cause thats what ive always assumed it feels like just from seeing movies and tv shows. Just wanted to know if thats how it actually is? The only kinda similair thing ive had to the idea of stiches was a dart in my finger but that was just a bruised / aching pain.
@@dejay4568 i mostly remember the feel of my skin being pulled. I kept trying to move my head while they did the stitching. Made for a bit of a fight between me and the doc. It may have burned a bit but I mostly recall the feel of my skin as I pulled back while they worked on me. I have a pretty gnarly scar under my chin to this day because I couldn’t sit still. Which is why I sport a beard.

Between the heartwarming cute moments showcasing Ellie and Riley finally being able to act like kids again for once, if only for a little while...... only to rip it all away again for the seventh time in a row (damn you, show), this never ending River of tragedy that follows Ellie is emblematic of not just the shows central theme but why Ellie continues to fight, to carry on.
It showcases her and Riley on opposite sides of an ideological, real and tribalistic conflict before they lay down their arms and come together to just be close for a little while because they're each others purpose in this moment; a fascinating parallel to the Bill and Frank love story and why it matters greatly when Ellie continues to lose and lose. And now that she does have someone who looks after her, who she can depend on, who matters to them, she’ll be damned if she loses that kind of meaningful connection again.
For Riley’s sake and everyone else who died, Ellie will finish this journey……even if it kills her.

Honestly I prefer the game version. She loves the game, but like many other things can never experience it, so Riley finds a way. The imagined lighting and sound effects is the peak visual moment of the DLC, and inspired the astronaut scene in part 2 which is even more beautiful. I understand how it probably wouldn't translate as well in a gritty, visually realistic tv show though, so I understand the change.

I think episode 1 kind of sets up the idea that the people that work in sewage get paid more, when Joel asks for jobs the officers mentions it. I don't think Riley was concerned about the pay but rather purpose. She wants to do more and change things, which is available through the Fireflies. Also someone like Marlene saw potential in her in a similar manner to how the FEDRA officer saw something in Ellie, hence the stances they have in this ep
This truly is one the greatest tv shows about love.

I feel like the flashback is more to show how ellie thinks about not leaving someone else she loves, since everyone she loves either dies og leaves her. So the flashback is to show how she got bit, but also for her not giving up on joel
Riley’s actress is Storm Reid. She’s mostly known for playing Rue(Zendaya’s) little sister in Euphoria and yeah she truly stole the show in this episode.
In the game/DLC Ellie and Riley have explored this mall multiple times when they were both in Fedra school. They never encountered any Infected there before so that's why they feel safe there. The Infected only show up to attack because they play the dance music which attracts them.
7:48, The song Take On Me by A-ha is the song Ellie sung to Dina at the music store in TLOU 2.
The actor who played Riley was the sister of one of the boys who was incarcerated in the HBO docudrama "When They See Us", btw.

I promise I felt Marketa when she said "why are you making me wait another week?" Lml. The only gripe I had was the lack of progress with the current storyline as well. That being said the flashback greatly impressed me and made me look at Ellie very differently as I recalled certain things she had stated at the beginning of the show. I for one actually thought she was going to take Joel's advice and leave him behind which would've went greatly with his speech to his brother from the last episode but she chose not to and that worked just as well because of the flashback
Love this little girl ❤ and the actress is killing it. She was already great in GoT but I feel like this might put her more on the map and deservedly so. Was even more surprised to see Storm Reid and thought she was phenomenal as well. Lastly I'm really impressed with how LGTBQ oriented this series is as I thought the only characters of that elk would've been Bill and Frank but Ellie is too I guess which made her character in this episode stand out that much more imo in terms of the acting. And now that I think about it I guess that makes her reaction to the magazine in the car make even more sense. I cannot believe this show is only going to be 9 episodes long 😖 Really wish it would've been longer. I'm obsessed.

They do have that higher payment for poop in place. Joel is told this in the first episode. Difference for him was it was a volunteer position. Riley isn't being given a choice. Some people (like myself) wouldn't take that job regardless of the pay.

seriously, Ellie discovering fatalities for the first time was all of us as kids, MK2 was the first i played in the series and it will always be my favourite, just hearing the attract music gave me chills

By the way, the infected you saw in this episode is called a stalker, or something between a runner and a stalker at least… hope they’ll be introduced better in season 2 cause they’re super creepy

We've seen Stalkers in the show but they haven't been named.
If an Infected can see but has no fungal growth they are a Runner.
If an Infected can see but has some fungal growth they are a Stalker.
If an Infected cannot see because fungal growth is covering their eyes they are a Clicker.
Ellie stabbed a Stalker in the basement of that store. The Infected that "kissed" Tess was a Stalker. Etc.
"Clicker" is the only one of these terms we hear in this show. Everyone else is just called "Infected".
the entire david sequence and last part of the game following it are about an hour (assuming you dont die) each so i think it makes sense to do those in one episode each

I get the confusion over the amount of eps, there is actually 9 in total (due to the first 2 episodes being merged by HBO so the sarah prequel continued into the tess/meeting ellie chapter becuase they feared audience engagement might be lessened if they just had ep 1 be the prequel). So it was officially 10 made, but on launch there is now 9.

Malls were dying before Amazon got big. They are just depressing all together. They were originally made to support single family housing's (I despise urban sprawl) needs for goods and services, without having them all drive to towns and cities jamming up the traffic. What people in single family housing really needs is a easy to access third place. First place is home, second place is work and third place is where you actually meet people. Malls are not easy access, driving for 20 minutes or more in traffic is not easy access, and are not good for chilling with your pals.
Giving stiches really should be a part of the FEDRA training.
Such an important episode..glad they added it in the season because for the first time in the show..ellie comes in to jer own..and yes its tragic but man it give credence to past episodes with joel... What an episode... Every episode is building to a cresendo and its sick af to watch
Riley chose Mileena in Mortal Kombat II and Ellie played Baraka.
Both were Lovers in the game.
Baraka skewered Mileena as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Runner-Riley.
I think it's clear she stabbed her.
That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through in her because an infected bit her friend and killed him.
Previous episode, Ellie wanted a sip of liquor from Joel and said "still gross". This was her first time.
The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her.
I actually thought Ashley Johnson (game Ellie) would have her cameo here. Obviously, this was not the case, but it comes later in another memory.

"Progress" isn't just marching the characters forward. Ellie's character progressed a ton. We see her moments that defines her choice. Then she chooses, and she becomes the protector while Joel is down. The story is served significantly by the flashback. It's like episode 8 of WandaVision, almost all flashback, but incredible leaps forward for one of the two main characters.

I don't know if any one remembers the video of an African community that got there first escalator and the town would take field trips and it was a popular first date destination as well so yeah seeing an escalator for the first time is an experience of a lifetime believe or not

one thing the creators mentioned in the post-show podcast was that in this story, the world effectively ended in 2003. Meaning all the progress in acceptence in LGBT+ rights never actually happened - means that the feelings Ellie and Riley have is still very taboo.

After they didn't show specifically what ended up happening to Riley in this episode i figured they definitely just gonna leave it up to assumption but Riley's actor is so good they might have just 1 more flashback in a later episode to show that heartbreaking scene

Next week's episode will be the entire Winter section and the season's finale will be the finale of the first game. The Winter section is one of the best parts of the game and the teaser promises a lot of action. I do wonder how they will wrap up the story in the final episode though.
the last part of the game (spring) is super short so I don't think there will be a problem. Like the entire hospital part is like 9 minutes.
Some may feel it's a bit rushed because one factor is they're showing one episode per week. But I think once this is all and done and the last episode airs, we'll appreciate the pacing if we rewatch the whole season again from beginning to end (that's about an 8-9 hour movie, folks). The producers have certainly watched the whole thing many times over and all could have agreed the pace is just right for the time and budget allowed to them by HBO. This was probably originally planned as a 10 episode run but turned into 9 when HBO strongly recommended the pilot to end where Joel Ellie and Tess got out of the QZ and they all had to adjust the run times for each episode.
I'm gonna be honest, I was feeling the opposite, like they really let things sit for a long time. I was honestly worried that they might have to rush things in the end since there was so much to cover. Now they didn't skip anything substancial and we still have time for one episode for David, which is fair, and one, hopefully extended finale for salt lake city (and I'm predicting either a cold open or a Marlene flashback with Ellie's mom, since Ashley didn't get her scene yet)

This episode wasn't a filler, rather an important episode as it covered the events of the last of us dlc. What was actually filler and useless was the Kansas City introduction with kathleen. That should've been just one episode and focused on Joel/Ellie & Henry/Sam.
they are on track imo, in terms of concluding "tlou part 1" with 2 more episodes to go.
