I liked how Ellie was essentially repeating the stuff Cpt. Kwong told her. She doesn't necessarily believe (all of) what she's saying. She's just trying to get Riley to come back with her.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey hardly had dialogue in this episode, but you felt the tension and panic without words being said in that room. Storm Reid and Bella Ramsey also had amazing chemistry, too. Let's all basically skip school in a post apocalyptic world.
I also love how at the end Ellie is nervous, but she's committed to help Joel get better no matter what by sewing his wound because she lost Riley and doesn't want to lose Joel next because he's the second person she loved since Riley. God the storytelling is fantastic.

Both Ellie and Riley are leaning in two different directions were they both know it will end up with them fighting each other. And it's obvious they don't want that, especially when she saw the bombs, Riley knows if Ellie is Fedra they will not spare her or listen to her, same if Riley is a Firefly. They both desperately trying to convince each other, even tho they both have doubts.

Left Behind's story has always been near and dear to my heart. I loved getting to know Ellie more, get to know who she was before all this, what made her who she is, what makes her fight so hard for those she loves. It is an important bridge between Part 1 & 2 for Ellie's character.
Bella Ramsey did a stellar job in this episode. Probably the best she's been in this show, and she's been REALLY good throughout.
Loved the images of Ellie interlocking her fingers with Riley's hand, and then later doing the same with Joel.
Everyone left her or died. She'll be damned if she lets Joel die without a proper fight.

I’m didn’t find the age-up on Riley effective and it changes the dynamic between her and Ellie as well as Marlene to a lesser extent: the wiki claims Riley is 16+ despite having no source citation and the DLC characterizing her much younger

    • @SidPhoenix2211
      @SidPhoenix2211 ปีที่แล้ว +26

@@hellfish2309 Riley is 15 in American Dreams and 16 in Left Behind (the official site used to have this information. But ofc, that address is now being used for Part 1). Ellie was 14 in Left Behind and in the summer chapter of TLoU. She is 15 as the game ends.
Riley has always been a bit older than Ellie.
So her dynamic with Ellie is the same as it's always been: a slightly older friend who protected Ellie from bullies + her crush. And unlike in the games + comics... Ellie doesn't know about Marlene until after she's bitten (really doesn't make too much of a difference. Only Riley knew her. And there really isn't much to their dynamic outside of firefly leader and new recruit.
Ellie only knew Marlene for all of 3 weeks in the games. Here she only knows her for like a day. But she feels attached to her cuz Marlene knows about Ellie and her mom. And as for Marlene... In both mediums, she kept tabs on Ellie from afar.
So yeah. Nothing significant changes, really.

This episode, just like the Left Behind DLC, is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. When Ellie and Riley are having the time of their lives playing around the mall and especially the arcade I felt absolutely elated. I especially loved how this was also a first date between them, even though they didn’t really know it was a date. And then when they finally kissed I couldn’t help but hold my heart because I thought it would burst from pure joy.
And after they both get bit I felt my heart break even harder than in the game. On the “Inside The Episode” after the show they talked about how even though Ellie felt absolutely defeated she still wants to savor every second of time that she has with the ones she loves. And it shows when she is stitching Joel up and the Left Behind theme is playing.
For God’s sake just give Bella Ramsey the Emmy!

One thing I think is great is all the hints we got in earlier episodes that none of the reactors I've watched have mentioned. in episode 1 Marlene asks Ellie if she thought Riley was bad because she was a firefly. In episode 3 we saw Ellie find the mk2 arcade and going on about Mileena eating you and spitting out your bones which they showed here. We also got the clue in episode 2, talking to Tess Ellie said she got bit by going in the mall. episode 4 she tells Joel it wasn't her first time liking someone.
Lots of hints to this episode

I've been noticing a lot of people who seem to think the show is "rushing a 14+ hour story", as if a substantial part of the game isn't just walking, killing infected/raiders, and walking some more, which is *stage dressing* for the actual story between joel and ellie. it's not a goddamn action thriller about a pair of super murderers just going on a rampage.

@@erinhaury5773 i think it’s fair to expect some more bridging of gaps etc, even if we’re not following our characters across those (3) months every hour etc…
I think the missed opportunities include a ‘stealth’ scene in the KC underground (admittedly hard to produce and film), a flashback of Joel putting the screws to that ‘one FEDRA captain’, a John-Mctiernan-style firefight escaping the University and a micro horror movie sequence of Riley and Ellie trying to escape the stalker
I think it’s fair for some people to judge the season as slightly dependent on jumping from climactic watershed moments of drama …. FAR from the same scale of indictment of Daenaerys towards the end of GoT, but same complaint

People mostly just want more action, it feels like. But what they're missing is that this isn't an action show, it's a drama in a post-apocalypse setting. The game has all that action and stealth for gameplay purposes, but in a show a lot of that wouldn't serve a real purpose. Every action scene should have a reason to exist in a good TV or film story other than just spectacle and excitement. If it doesn't serve to either change the character in some way or further the plot, it's unnecessary.
Same with people saying stuff like "there aren't enough Infected in the show." Did you know that originally the game wasn't supposed to have any infected either, and the disease instead just killed everyone like a plague? But they changed it for the game because from a *gameplay* perspective, it's easier to get the danger of the infection across if it's an enemy you fight. (This is mentioned in the "making of" documentary, Grounded.) In the show with no gameplay, the infected don't serve that same purpose so naturally they become more of a background aspect of the story. They're mostly a framing device for the apocalypse, but Craig Mazin has openly said he doesn't really care about the infected. The story isn't about killing zombies, it's about Joel and Ellie. This isn't the Walking Dead, where it often felt like the show had a producer mandated quota of minimum amount of zombies per episode.
Edit: This isn't to say that I think action and spectacle are inherently wrong to want. Hell, I love stupid action movies like John Wick that prioritize action over story. But if you want to tell a heartfelt and emotional story like the Last of Us, drama is the more fitting genre for that.

I disagree with Eric about games not conveying emotions as well as live-action. It’s definitely a subjective thing to be able to connect more with a real person, but you can definitely pick up on “unconscious communication” in the game because the character performances are very much real as well as the emotional beats. To me nothing about it being a game takes away from that.

the comic book store is my wonder. I'd go every week just to look at the new issues coming in. I can't afford them at the time but looking at them felt I was connected to the thing I loved. eventually, growing up I was able to afford them and it still holds a place in me.
it feels different when you actually go to a physical store and peruse what's on the SALE bin or on the display area. I just love it

This show is so good at making you think something is gonna happen and it never does. I was on edge this entire episode, thinking an infected would pop out at any moment. The fact that they gave us like 15 minutes between showing the infected and him actually popping out was so mean but so good. I was so tense and that's what makes a fantastic thriller.

After Ellie mentioning Milenna fatality in other episode glad to see MKII. Takes me back to arcade days when put down quarters to challenge. Always wondered if she killed Ridley in game. Great episode felt like the DLC.

I like the idea of the separation between the game and the show being the action, making the game have that extra that honestly works best at that media just feels right. This separation also justifies both versions existing, on top of making the story more accessible to non gamers of course.
I'm just really curious as to how they'll handle TLOU 2, seeing as the action and violence is a big part of the theme and story from that game and I don't know how they could tone the action down without taking away from the experience, but they've been doing such a good job so far (let's see how the hospital section will turn out) so I'll try to trust them.

favorite mall wonder for Ellie was the arcade, it was nice to see her geek out. I’m a nerd & would loot a books-a-million. My only complaint about this episode is at this point in the game we don’t know if Joel is alive for a while, I wish they did that in the show. Still love this episode though

The time frame this flashback happened is the same in the video game too. It was after Joel got hurt. The only difference is the game dived more into finding medical supplies for Joel

Might be a stretch but….. i really liked the kind of foreshadowing they did here. When ellie was on the moving stairway (dont know what its called hahah) take on me was playing ( the happy upbeat version). But she is only going downhill, even if she walks the stairs up…. In the end she will go eventually. Thats what kinda happens to her in the second game, but this time with take on me in the sad melancholic version

9:20 IK gamestop existed at the time, but around that time in the malls I went to it was always EB Games (before they were bought by GS in 2005). I would of loved for that to of been an EB Games. Would of worked too considering it was 2003 when it went south.

*Ellie's* reaction to seeing the _Mortal Kombat II_ machine in episode 3 doesn't make much sense now. I would have thought she'd see that and feel sad. But she was thrilled and excitedly told the story about how someone she knew had a magazine (or whatever) all about the game. Anyway, her excited reaction seeing that stand up console in the old gas station doesn't quite track now. 🤷🏼‍♂️
