    Q4OS is definitely THE most Windows-like Linux OS out there.
    On top of the remarkably familiar UI themes, the way they implemented Windows-like "installer Wizards" for apps certainly makes the whole system feel more familiar to MS refugees.
    Not to mention you can literally INSTALL it next to Windows, within Windows, and not lose anything, is truly remarkable!

    Thanks for a great overview of Q4OS! I'm also a happy user. I run it with Trinity on a really old computer where I previously ran Lubuntu, which is also a lightweight distro. Q4OS with Trinity is a lot faster / more lightweight than Lubuntu in my experience.

    • @PlanetLinuxChannel
      @PlanetLinuxChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed! I think Q4OS is slimmer and more efficient under the hood than most anything Ubuntu-based; not that you can’t have a good lightweight Ubuntu-based distro, but just that Q4OS (especially with Trinity) seems very well optimized for lightweight usage.

    I use Q4OS Trinity on a notebook Intel Atom 1.6 GHz 2 GB RAM and it's great! Other distros that i tried and also very lightweight such as AntiX Linux, Puppy Linux (Bionic or Slacko), Elive Linux and Bodhi Linux are very good too.

      Glad to hear it! I’ve also found Q4OS does a great job of slimming down resource usage under the hood while still providing a nice useable experience.
      I like Puppy Linux and Bodhi as well (and they may run even better on VERY low-end hardware) but I personally find that Q4OS offers a friendlier user experience than they do.

Thanks for going over the applicable FEATURES instead of just reiterating kde crap that we all know and showing the basic thing that kde does-- good to know what this software actually DOES and how.. As someone who is building up a rig with old pc parts because #1 it doesn't need power for the work i'll be doing on it and #2 it minimizes E waste(not everything needs to have the latest and greatest to be functional)
    since i'm going old school with hardware, i've been looking for something that emulates that old school windows xp experience and look, lo and behold, the perfect distro, with that old school feel and modern functionality.

    • @PlanetLinuxChannel
      @PlanetLinuxChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does a pretty good job of providing that XP-style look and is a great everyday / productivity distro that really does shine on older hardware.
      I admire your building with older parts. It’s impressive what can be accomplished even with older components. I recently worked with an old Dell desktop with an older (I think 4th Gen) i7 and just put in a larger power supply and used (but modern) GTX 1650 graphics card. Now that 9-year-old business productivity tower is a pretty capable video editing and 1080p gaming PC!

    Two more things, it can be installed right from a Win 10 machine, so you end up with WIn10/Q4Os dual boot, a great feature, which means that any NTF hard drive is seen and writable to. Very fast with a circa 2011 4 gig memory Macbook Pro. It doesn't see the Mac's built in Wifi, so I run with USB wifi dongle, or use Internet cable connection.. Steve

    • @PlanetLinuxChannel
      @PlanetLinuxChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, wi-fi could be a bit finicky in most Linux distros on some MacBooks; there might be drivers / kernel modules online that would add support. But yes, Q4OS really does make it simple to use alongside an existing Windows installation, something more distros should consider a priority in my opinion.

    I am providing a review of Q4OS to a local PC Users Group. I installed Q4OS on a 22 year old HP OmniBook XE2 with PIII 450MHz and 256MB RAM. I had to use a PCMCIA ethernet adapter and the Trinity Basic Desktop Environment due to the lack of SSE2 instruction set. I agree that the Konqueror Browser is not practical for browsing the internet. Chrome, Chromium, and Firefox crawl on this ancient laptop. I plan to recommend the Pale Moon browser for systems with limited RAM. Any thoughts about a browser (e.g., Pale Moon) for such systems?

    • @PlanetLinuxChannel

    Hi, I am a linux beginner, I have a very old dual core pc with 8 gb of ram, I recently installed Q4OS 4.7 and I am happy with this distro, very stable and fast but I messed up for problems of incorrect installation on the programs, you miss dependencies, repositories etc ... However I'm curious to try windows 11 but in case it doesn't go well I would reinstall a linux distro again ... currently there is a more versatile, efficient and "beginner-proof" distro better than Q4OS? Or would I keep windows 11 and loading a live distro from a usb stick is feasible in terms of performance? Thanks.

    • @PlanetLinuxChannel
      @PlanetLinuxChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! If you’re looking for something lightweight and efficient, yet still fairly user-friendly, I recommend either Peppermint OS or Linux Mint with MATE or XFCE desktop environments. If you’re willing to have it use slightly more resources for a better overall experience, then Linux Mint Cinnamon or Zorin OS are great, beginner-friendly options. If you want to keep using something with KDE (the default desktop in Q4OS) then I recommend trying KDE Neon or Kubuntu (Fedora’s KDE spin is also great, but uses a different command-line package management system than Q4OS (DNF instead of APT) so you may not be as familiar with that.
      Hope this helps point you in the right direction. Let me know if there’s anything else.

      I believe MX Linux should run well on that computer. I hadn’t considered it the most user friendly in the past, but I believe it is much better now and should be pretty easy to use. You can always try the live environment from the USB drive before installing it onto your computer so you can see if you like the interface and experience. If by chance you don’t, then those other choices are all good to try (I would say specifically Linux Mint Cinnamon and Zorin are the most user-friendly of those listed).

      I think 256MB will be far too low to use any modern version of Linux. many distro's will claim their version will run on some very old machine, well it might technically run but it won't be usable. Remember the only meaningful office suite for Linux is LibreOffice which is stunningly resource hungry and always has been. I tried StarOffice 5.2, as it was then called, twenty one years ago on Windows and SUSe 7 and it made my computer cry, (it was neither better or worse on Linux). Only the vast power available to more modern computers allows Star/Open/LibreOffice to be a usable, (and really nice,) suite.
      With 256Mb Ram I would suggest you consider Win98Se - Don't laugh it runs fast with that much ram and you will find it easy to find drivers and add ons for 98se which you wont with an old Linux distro like SUSe 7. As a bonus remember you can download older, but perfectly good programs for free from a number of sites. MS Office 97 or 2000 / Lotus Smartsuite / WordPerfect all available as are PagePlus / CorelDraw et al. Lastly any reference works you might want will be available on ebay and there are still websites that offer community support for 98 and you might be surprised how much better 98 can be over a standard vanilla install. (unlike NT, Windows allows tinkering.)
      If you really must use Linux I was impressed with SuSe 7 and it too should fly with that much ram. If you can pick up a boxed copy the documentation was seriously impressive, three manuals that were pitched just right.
