Q4OS - A Fast and Friendly Debian Linux System With a Windows Installer

  • Q4OS is a linux system based on Debian stable that comes in two main variants - Plasma and Trinity.
It is designed to use minimal resources and it even offers a windows installer so that users can install the system in a folder on a windows NTFS partition - similar to the old Ubuntu Wubi from many years ago.
Apart from this feature, it can also be installed in the usual way. And what sets it apart from vanilla Debian is it's user friendliness.
Want a different desktop? It's a couple of clicks away. Want a desktop that automatically sets the right resolution? This seems to do it. Want to install non-free codecs? Again, just hit a button on the welcome screen.
This is the first time I've used this distro and I've come away with the impression that it is fast, stable and built to last - the current release is supported for years.
I hope you enjoy the video :-)

Well, hallelujah! I am nearly 80 and have only a Windows background since 1992. I am absolutely fed up with MS. When MS decided to require an account for Win 11, it was the straw that broke the camels back for me. My old mind is really challenged to start all over and learn a truly different op sys. Somehow, I am going to do it! With help like this of yours, I am going to make it. I just thank you so much for your kind efforts. I wish you well. Thanks for such a thoughtful effort.

Sorry to hear about the relative Steve, glad they're doing okay.
With so many people wanting to try Linux and failing at setting up dual-booting, I think Q4OS should be mentioned more than it is. Hopefully this video will get found by those interested. Seems easy to install, and easier to uninstall if they find Linux isn't their cup of tea. Don't know how YT search algorithms work, but this should be at the top of the list. Could save people a lot of headaches and frustration. Well done.

I have been using Q4OS for two to three years on an old Dell desktop without any problems. It runs as sweet as a nut and is as stable as you would expect from a Debian Distro. The installer being changed to Calamares is a blessing from the previous version.

27:23. No it's not running within windows: the windows OS is not running -- that's because you selected Q4OS in the Windows boot process. Just like Grub, the boot loader drops out at the point it hands control over to the Linux kernel.
What it is doing is running it's files on a Linux filesystem looped onto a single large Windows file, as you demonstrated a bit later.
It would therefore be fair to say it's "installed" within windows, but not that it runs within Windows.
That's a small performance hit and a very small memory hit, much more efficient on both than running a virtual PC within a Windows OS.
That's why you are so impressed with the figures

That was quite interesting thanks OTB. It does remind me of how we used to install Wubi in order to run Ubuntu in our enterprise laptops 💻, I like this. Great stuff, I’ll try it on the family PC which is 3x more powerful than my main Arch system. So this should actually run more faster than it would on my Linux bare metal.

Quite a good system, very solid and one nifty thing is....I had an install cd from a year ago and when I used it it automagically installs the latest version with all the updates and is up to date when installed....not 1 year's worth of updates waiting like almost any other linux installer disc lol. So fast and very solid. Well thought touches to make a quick setup to get up to speed.

i tried this distro just once but was quickly impressed, all the little details and helpers while it's rock solid like you said, simple to use and has such a small footprint on ressources, i think it would be my first choice if anyone like my father wanted to drop windows and instead wanted to try a linux distro he could handle - i still don't really trust that winfx distro to stay stable over the next upgrades, but i'm pretty sure q4os would run for a while even with a user unknowing how it actually works

    Q4OS its fantastic!! Marvelous!!.
In 2019 I download and I try in a VM and I liked.
Its very good for people who are transitioning from Windows to GNU-Linux, of course, you have another distros for this too, like Linux mint or another.

I have yet get my Pi 4, but Trinity sounds right for Pis, especially remote ones. One use I have is Software defined Radio. The Pi and USB radio dongle may be some distance from my controling machine. I have tried Debian, but my skills are not up to it alone. Q4OS may help that.

    • @byrw9557
      @byrw9557 2 ปีที่แล้ว

About 3 years ago I thought I was going to make the change to Linux and distro hopped around trying different ones that were recommended at the time for a newbie. Well, I guess I just didn't try the right ones. Anyway I gave up the idea because nothing I tried seem to fit with my old mind. But I saw this video, and it renewed my desire to switch as I'm just so fed up with Microsoft. I decided to do it within virtualbox so that I could throw it away in case I didn't care for it. I have been dumb struck as to how much easier this Q4 OS is! I also thought that I wanted to probably run the Trinity desktop as it looked a lot more like what I was used to. So I built another machine with the Trinity desktop instead. Well, that was not at all easier to get around in like I had thought it would be. Before I tried the trinity I was really liking the q40s. Now, I've come back to it without the Trinity desktop and just straight out of the download. I really, really like the plasma and it seems almost a breeze for me to find the things I need and get them done. I would recommend that to anyone who's in my situation of needing to do something else other than MS. I have decided that I like it so much that I'm going to make q4s the host and run win 10 in the virtualbox only as I need a particular program based on Windows. Now, if that is a sane idea, that's what I'm going to try. I'm going to build several boxes with win 10 and store them on other drives and then format my hard disk for Linux and install Q4 OS as the main OS. Then, I will use one of the boxes as need be which won't be often. I think I have this thing whipped now. It is only because of you, old tech bloke, that I have gotten this far and I certainly appreciate more than you know your help. It is also great for me to read these comments that give me little boosts along the way. If anyone sees anything wrong with what my plan is, I would certainly appreciate thoughts on that, too. Thanks.

@@byrw9557 Glad to hear you're progressing again towards GNU/Linux :) I can't say much about Win10 running in a VM (I definitely got rid of Windows 7-8 years ago ^^), but installing a GNU distro on its own Linux filesystem is the best result you can get. Thank you for this review. Downloaded the latest files just now. There have been regular updates, quietly issued over the months.
    Q4os-winsetup.zip, 17.7 MB (18,574,061 bytes)
    Q4os-3.12-x64.r3.iso, 894 MB (937,426,944 bytes)
When installed on my SSD, it defaults to one Windows folder: "debian". This was in Microsoft NTFS compressed on my Dell XPS notebook.
It has 19 Files, 8 Folders, claiming to use 19.5 GB (21,007,476,245 bytes).
In actual space on my SSD, NTFS-compressed, it only used 1.68 GB (1,810,587,648 bytes)
The contents of this folder "debian" seems not yet to be populated, so probably will be done after reboot..

I have played with Q4OS and Sparkylinux on an old Acer Aspire One AOA150 32bit architecture that I bought for $5 at the thrift store to set up a little laptop for my ham radio room and I decided that Q4OS is the best one to use for what I want to do with it. My other Acer AOA150 that I bought new years ago still has Winblows XP for the times I unfortunately must use it and I dual boot with Linux Mint 18 and it runs pretty well with Mint. Both are only 1Gb of memory. I have ran Linux since I fell completely out of love for Winblows in the late 90s and I will never go back to Winblows on purpose. I have used Puppy Linux for years but I have never really liked how it works as far as upgrading and installing programs and so on. It runs beautifully and extremely fast but it just feels like it's a constant project, whereas Q4OS feels like a pretty well put together and polished hot rod. And I love the option to install Synaptic Package Manager for even more access to the Debian software repositories. I think Sparky might be a little faster but it has problems with trying to install anything from Synaptic and gives errors that I don't feel like sorting out when I can just put Q4OS on and go to town. I would love to see if I can get some memory and upgrade these little netbooks and also install some SSD hard drives and really speed these up! I think anyone who tries Q4OS is in for a big surprise. Seems like a very nice flavor of Linux and especially for the older 32bit architecture.

Firefox ESR and Palemoon are both very usable browsers with this setup, though they struggle to run TH-cam. Also DVDs on VLC and other media players aren't watchable, but I'm not sure why, as the laptop runs them okay in Windows XP Black Edition with the MPC-HC player.
The Wubi-type installation seems to be a cross between Virtualbox and dual booting, though closer to the former - interesting that you actually refer to it as 'Virtualbox' a couple of times!

    • @Valdoror
      @Valdoror 2 ปีที่แล้ว

No. Wubi is closer to the latter (dual booting). It's actually a dual boot solution, with Q4OS being stored in a file on the Windows filesystem (whereas "in normal circumstances", Q4OS would be stored on a dedicated Linux filesystem/disk partition). That's the only difference with a "normal" installation of a GNU/Linux distro (plus the fact that the bootloader is the Windows one, instead of Grub).
OldTechBloke referred to Virtualbox because he used Virtualbox to host a Win10 VM in this video ;) (only for demonstration purposes)

before installing it i get 5hrs of battery on just windows 10.
after installing q4os, my battery life on both windows and q4 drops to 1.5 hrs... and i am unable to fix it.
after that i uninstalled q4os and things went back to normal.
can anyone help me with this? i actually liked q4 but i am unable to use it as i prioritise my battery life more than the OS.

Can it be installed on Windows XP and used safely on the internet?
If installed on a computer directly, using the TDE, this OS should be great for what OTB would call a "ThinkPad banger". I recently bought an R50e, so this video is useful.

if you don't need XP to run any particular windows only legacy software, you could just ditch XP for good and install Q4OS as the only OS on your R50 - i have the R40 and i upgraded the crap out of it: first thing i did was beef up the RAM to 2gb and throw out the dog slow 4200RPM HDD for a 2.5" IDE SSD. mine came without a wifi card installed so i put a wireless N card in there (had to install a bios patch because otherwise the laptop will not boot with a card installed that isn't on the certified hardware whitelist)

    Hello there.
I'm looking for a volunteer C++ coder to modify only two Mate functions. I can do it by adding "actions" but I'd rather do it directly like in Peppermint Os. If you can refer me to some one to help me with my open source project, would be appreciated.

You can install the core of the system, but it needs various workarounds to behave like an actual graphical install of Ubuntu, when you run it after installing it from the store it will only have the terminal and you will need an X Window Manager to run any graphical apps or desktop environments (along with some extra config)

    Is it WUBI UEFI?
Is it a fork of either of these?
I wondered if it's a reworking of the same ideas more or less from the ground up, but the fact that it calls it WUBI is a hint otherwise

My LC 575 Macintosh had a 33Mhz processor, 8MB RAM and could run browsers, quicktime video and a bunch more. I will never understand why today a Desktop environment takes up 400+MB ram while doing nothing but sitting there. I also don't understand why browsers these days are larger than my LC 575's entire hard drive (250MB SCSI) How much of the size today is enhancements and how much is just lazy bloated coding I wonder. If my LC 575 could run video, music, text, games even on 8MB RAM, why on earth do we need gigabytes to run the stuff we have today (When used in a conservative manner) even my old 200Mhz PC could run Lightwave to do 3D modeling. I wish there was a truly minimal Linux which used resources more like that of my old macintosh, but it seems they all require so much. What is being called "Light weight" these days is really not light weight at all.

    • @KenjiUmino
      @KenjiUmino 2 ปีที่แล้ว

i think most of it is indeed lazy coding, but the biggest offenders these days are not the software devs, it's the website creators ... picture this: i sit there with my 10 year old laptop, write my emails, print my letters while i listen to music at the same time ... 5 to 10 applications open and all is fine, the machine does not get hot and does respond quickly ... CPU is at barely 15%, not even a third of the total ram is used, no swap activity.
... then i close all these applications, open up ONE browser tab to buy a new bookshelf and suddenly the whole thing starts lagging and dragging while the fan goes all jet engine ... just plain old firefox with nothing but an adblocker going on a freshly installed OS ... the CPU is at 110% and the OS is swapping like a boss ... what happened ????
i mean ... why the fuck does a website without video playback or other heavy multimedia content eat up hundreds of megabytes and how the fuck does it manage to stress out dual and even older quad core CPUs to 99.9% ... is ikea.com mining crypto in the background or is something else going wrong here ?

@@KenjiUmino Well hello! They got to record your mouse clicks and key strokes in real time and transmit to NSA database. Computer lags to ensure all internet data is saved. It appears to be inherent to the internet itself. If a browser builds in back doors they can be rewarded with faster load times whereas those who value privacy work against data collection software which uses more processing power on our end.

I liked gnome 2 and mate is the nearest I can get to it. The forks I object to are those that take something existing and just add a new theme or wallpaper. I’m fine with forks that add something unique

@@OldTechBloke how about forks of stuff that has been abandoned by the original developer?
or what if the project has moved in a direction that you don't like - like gnome2 VS gnome3 - if someone would maintain a fork of the original gnome2 without adding anything unique (like MATE did), just keeping it compatible with newer versions of X or wayland and whatnot - would you be fine with that ?

And it's good to be offered the choice.
