  • In this video, I'm going to take a look at the recently released Q4OS 4.6, codenamed "Gemini." Q4OS is a fast and friendly, desktop oriented operating system based on Debian 11 Testing. Q4OS now uses the Plasma desktop as its default.

I loved KDE 3 and had my doubts about the switch to 4.0, but I wouldn't go back. Nowadays, KDE has so many configurable features. It can become your very own work of art in a functional desktop. If Windows had this ability, most users heads would explode.

KDE should receive the Linux DE mainstream treatment, instead of the other one that sucks so bad that it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

unlike another DE that literally makes you install third party software to do basic tweaks (You literally can't even disable mouse accel by default) + changes fundamental settings/UI that ruin your workflow just because the developers think they know better than you
now that I think of it, that sounds shockingly similiar to other mainstream operating system(s), how coincidental!

All the others are clunky, awkward, and they can not be configured for a streamlined work flow. They seem to have been created by sheep. Sheep don't think, they just follow the crowd, never considering there may be a better way, and never knowing what they are missing.

Hello DT, I find your review a little unfair as you miss to mention the initial ambition of the Q4OS team, which is to deliver a lightweight linux distribution that invites MS 9x- and XP-Windows users to emerge themselves into the linux world with only little hazzle and conversion pain, and that can run on pretty old hardware too. While TDE offered just that in the past, and so was the right choice to begin with, its succesor KDE plasma has meanwhile come a long way and can almost serve the same purposes, so switching the default desktop from one to other just makes perfect sense in my view. You still have both options to chose from. Second, the Q4OS welcome app is much more than a software manager or repository. It comes with a windows-like look-and-feel on purpose, and offers the newcomer a very easy and convenient way to chose and install a handfull of the most popular and useful applications that probably everybody wants to have on their PC. The selection the team made is really very good and if you don't want to use it, don't use it.

Q4OS Plasma was one of my first Plasma experiences. Then there was Kubuntu, Neon, Xerolinux, Ubuntu Studio (Atcheeew!, sorry I have alergy to bloat) and few others. Q4OS was the fastest and smoothest of them all, whatever machine I ran it on. RAM, CPU, snappiness and speed of starting/running apps.
    Concerning the proprietary bloat:
At first boot you should've been asked to choose the Profile of your application-set that you prefer (The Desktop Profiler). I dont remember the names of the profiles, but as I remember you had to choose one of three. 1-Unbloated, 2-Slightly-Bloated, 3-Bloated-quite-too-much.
If you do not like the bloat, just at the first boot choose the lightest option in Desktop Profiler. Which also allows you to remove all the bull when switching them..
    Defending the Software Centre:
Q4OS is basically Debian, so it does not come with snaps, flatpaks and other modern pack-mans.
And Steam few years ago was not available easily as a one-command installation through apt/synaptic.
So Q4 Software Centre was a time and hassle saver, installing Steam with one click, which then you had to follow a long tutorial to install it.
And as far as I know, many other complicated apps available in Q4 Software Centre solved some apt problems back then.
Maybe now this might be unnecessary. But I remember how it made me install the steam when I did not know shit about how to use apt, snaps, flatpaks, and there was no one good steam apt package..
Q4OS is great, maybe because it is a debian that tries to give a little helping hand to users (It also has a from-windows-linux-installer). I also didnt have any significant issues when installing additional Desktop Environment (xfce for example), unlike on other some distros. I did not try out the pure Debian KDE Plasma edition, so if I will see that it does perform just as well as Q4OS I will move all my praise away to Debian KDE.

KDE 3 was the next natural step beyond xp, the way KDE should have continued instead of cloning vista and then tweaking off of that in my opinion...before plasma debacle my slackware + kde3 was all customized up with transparency and all the prettiness and gui configuration menus of modern guis, but none of the bloat and bugs of vista/plasma--could easily run on 196mb of ram and any ole 3d video accelerator...plasma has definitely cut down the bugs and improved on the system usage, kind of like win 7?
Q4OS is the most mature distro with a very stable trinity for about the last year+ (we use q4os 3+ trinity on all our desktops at home now, including my toddler)...but the two community versions of pclinuxos trinity are definitely worth a try for those who want something a little different

I evaluated 3.12 Q4OS plasma version maybe as a option besides Kubuntu . I plan to see how it compares to Kubuntu 20.04. The software center is Q4OS software app ( its very limited) not KDE.
When I was evaluating 3.12 release I used discover more than software center or I would install synaptic. Discovery would not find applications I know existed. This still could be a alternative to Kubuntu. Though I have a few friends with older computers that run Linux Mint which 200MB less ram idle. one is a Lenovo 57m and the other is thinkpad T410 with s SSD.

Q4OS Plasma should be on every list of "good distro if you're new to linux". Among Linux Lite, Kubuntu, deepin, Mint, Pop, and Zorin, Q4OS is my best newbie recommendation.
Yes, Q4OS is basically debian KDE....BUT:
It gives a helpful hand to new to Linux users, with the desktop profiler, the quick-install software centre, nice icon theme, and very small iso size.
It is basically a friendly improvement on Debian KDE for newbies.
