Those big Cats always wake up grumpy, never met one that was happy to be disturbed. TBH though, I've seen more than a few small ones (truck engines) that woke up cranky, too. Had one that was a real piece of work to keep running, even. But when they are running happily, they're a good machine to have on your side.

One of the mines I worked at has a CAT 3516B on a generator for emergency power to the hoists, there is also a contract with the power company to run it in the summer during hot days to help with load on the grid. Fuel efficiency---520L of #2 diesel per hour, and this piece of iron is 2-1/2x the size of that generator.

The one I have experience with was a 3608 which didn't make it to the first sample, it failed just after commissioning. It was a back up / peak lopping generator unit at a mine site that would sit on pre heaters keeping it warm, then when needed it would crank up, idle for 30 seconds at around 350 RPM then go straight to flight revs. of 750 RPM before loading up.
