Cat 3516 ULB replacement engine startup
The 3516 ULB incorporates dry exhaust manifolds and care must be taken to ensure no coolant, oil, or gas leaks. The video demonstrates the surface area atop the engine that is at high exhaust temperatures while burning off the painted surfaces. This engine was replaced due to a fire caused by a gas release.
Around July 2016 Cat will be offering a water cooled manifold conversion at a cost around 55-60k. The JW cooler section will need an additional 25% increased THR to accommodate the conversion.

3516ULB/Ariel with initially high vibration.

This unit had very high vibration due to foundation and skid design. These results are after pouring the skid with cementitious grout and topping it with 2" of epoxy to the skid plate level. Look for the Nickel!
5500 Horsepower Electric Drive Ariel Compressor Package

Another 5500 Hp Ariel compressor package commissioned in Iraan Texas. This is a three stage injection compressor with split third stage cylinders and Hyundai Ideal Synchronous motor. This unit moves 28.5 mmcf approximately 47% CO2 and is loaded to 98% motor FLA. These Ariel KBZ compressor units packaged by CSI are proving to be very reliable.

Performing a string test (FAT) to a pump system for a customer in Myanmar. This system will assist in transporting oil across the country of Myanmar (We will build 10 of these). Water is used for the test. The customer was at our facility and very pleased with the outcome.

I commissioned this system on the Elba Island LNG facility for Kinder Morgan in Savannah GA. This compressor handles the boil off gas from the LNG storage tanks in three stages. Notice the unit color? That's why it's named the Georgia Peach:)
55,000 Horsepower Ariel Gas Compressor Plant Start-up

This is a 55,000 HP compressor plant starting up in Bakersfield CA. These are CSI packages with Teco Electric motors driving Ariel KBZ and JGD 6 throw compressors.

Watching for magnetic center and motor oscillation. With only .024 thrust in the compressor this is very important!!! The motor end play is .500 and was originally oscillating approx. .250. There were two units on this location and both had to be re-leveled to .002/ft. This type of synchronous motor has a very weak magnetic centering force and the shear weight of the rotor(18000 lbs) was enough...

It's seem like my unit, high vibration due to space on the grouting in the skid. How to solve the problem?
Some day some how I would like see a side by comparison sheet of carbon emissions…I would like to know if the transmission losses and energy type conversion inefficiencies of the electric prime mover is still less than that of a 5Khp diesel and also include a fuel turbine in the comparison as well….what I want to know is “does the efficiency of scale of a very large electricity producing power plant reduce emissions below those of multiple on sight small industrial scale power plants”

I used to work for the Los Angeles DWP for 34 years in steam electric generating station. The air compressor motors in this video resemble the boiler feed pump motors in the generating station I worked at. I am guessing that these air compressor motors must be around 2,500 horsepower.

That engine has got the biggest exhaust caps i have ever seen!
The crappy part about rebuilding one of these is that it takes 3 hours to pre lube before you can attempt start up. I've overhauled 16 of these and ran them all at idle in shop for customers and it shakes the ground

I’ve installed and aligned quite a few of theses on gas compression skids. Always fun to hear them start after completion.

One of the mines I worked at has a CAT 3516B on a generator for emergency power to the hoists, there is also a contract with the power company to run it in the summer during hot days to help with load on the grid. Fuel efficiency---520L of #2 diesel per hour, and this piece of iron is 2-1/2x the size of that generator.
I think you are actually referring to fuel consumption. Fuel efficiency is fuel used against work done.

@@dedubh8016 litres and cubic feet are interchangeable but I could imagine at that rate of consumption, cubic metres is the more appropriate unit!

Not sure where the design came from. However I’m a machine repairman at the Lafayette, IN caterpillar plant. We are currently producing 3606 gas, 3608 diesel or gas (inlines) and 3616 engines, very few are diesel. Not sure where you got your information from.
@@GMarsh-gn1iw look at the design and compare to MaK who has been building large trunk diesels for over 40 years. The largest Cat had was the 3500 series until the bought MaK in the early 2000s. I know this cause I am a marine engineer. We had 3500 series Cat generators. And MaK and Wartsilla main diesels. Cat never was in the Large engine market till they acquired MaK you can look into it you’ll see.
@@donpetrey8007 like I said not sure who/where the design came from. I assure you, our build schedule currently is 3 3600 engines a week currently. I guess I don’t understand. We build the 3600 series engine in Lafayette Indiana. Have for a long time.
@@GMarsh-gn1iw yes Cat bought MaK in 1997 look at there engines and you’ll see that where Cat got into big engines. I know cat builds them in the us there tech came from Germany and that’s where they do all there large testing for the 3600 series. Look it up. I have worked on cars sense 1994 and seen the transition to the large engines.
