The legendary Honda CR500. Are you man enough for a 500 two-stroke?

  • The mighty 500cc two-stroke, and especially the awesome Honda CR500, is an iconic machine that most riders didn't or couldn't ride back in the day.
When they were killed off to make way for easier-to-ride 250s, their legendary status was set in stone. It's the bike feared and desired in equal measures, even today, as riders hunt down big-bore CRs to see if they have what it takes to master the beast.
In our short film Whiskey Throttle, two-stroke superfan Dave Willet talks about what it's like to master a CR500 and shows just what a beast it it.

I love it, well done and so true. You forgot to mention when surrounded by the common sound of a 4 stroke at a race meet and there is silence as everybody is getting there gear and bikes unloaded if you start a 500 2 stroke everyone stops, heads turn and in a drawn instinct people are in awe of this super crisp vibrating and ever so unique sexual high idle note and to top it off with the fragrance of a manly full synthetic perfume popping beautiful rings out the tail pipe. Now girls that's a real man's bike.

Stop clinging to the past mate. 450s kill these things now or they would still be making them. Most people cant handle them anyway. I rode one once and stuff that. There no easy ride on one of those

I own both, the 450 4 stroke has just as much peak power, except everywhere in the rev range. The 500 has a very narrow power band.

.im a beginner level rider..my brother had a 91, and a 93 cr 500..most approachable and friendly bike i ever rode. You dont have to wind it..you could lug it around in third on the sand at pismo in 3rd gear all day..if you needed power just twist the throttle. No down shifting needed. His 250 2 strokes scared me..you had to wind them and they were scary. 500 is a beginner friendly bike...it was like having a big ass body guard that was super cool to you....respect it and it's Awsome. I smoked everyone that day. It was fun. My Dad thought I was crazy. That was back in the day. Now working on a 79 Husqvarna cr390 project. Yahoo....

1st motorcross bike i ever cast my leg over back in the day was an RM 465, i was instantly hooked from that moment on, i quickly moved on to the KX500 before finally owning and riding and racing CR 500s for some 15 years, the blood red of the CR500 runs in my veins. even today in my later years of life given the opportunity to cast my leg over one i would not need a second invite, to feel that rush of Adrenalin coursing through my body as that throttle rotates to the stopper would have me grinning from ear to ear.

Highly overrated. I've owned a Husky 450 and 3 Cagiva 500's. 🤔🤯3! 1986. And 450 four strokes and a 640KTM. This mystique about 500's is misplaced. 125's and 250's beat them on the track. And I've owned them too. I'm going Completely thru a 1998 KX125 now, bearings, crank, porting etc. 500 takes over around 65mph. Example:: I would drag race my son on his kx60. If I didn't get off line right it would take 100 yards, about 60mph to catch him and pass. He would be in 5th and I would be in 3rd.

The CR500 is not overrated, its misunderstood. Hype has turned this bike into a god when its really just a great piece of Honda engineering that deserves recognition. Ask the pros from the era of these bikes and they will tell you only a few people have ever been able to ride a CR500 to its true potential. On a track a 125 could beat a CR500, being as every time you crack the throttle it wants to dig a 20 foot trench rather than get traction. Rolling start with good traction a 85-87 CR500 will will keep up with a modern 450 until the CR500 tops out and the 450 pulls away. Not bad for a 35 year old bike. It would be interesting to see if you put 35 years of engineering into a CR500 engine what it could do. But that will never happen. So for now the CR500 legend will live on.
