- Carson Brown is the newest member of the Red Bull family and it seems like his life's work of building, riding and racing every type of motorcycle known to man; is finally starting to pay off. Carson was an obsessive amateur racer and came up through the Team Green ranks before burning himself out at the beginning of his professional career. Since then Carson was forced to walk an unconventional path to achieving on of the sports most iconic deals, a Red Bull helmet. With Carson being one of the main protagonists in this weekends $20,000 2-stroke race-within-a-race at the Washougal National, there was no better time to bring him in for a chat.

I raced the KX500 91,92 and 93 in the open expert class. Everything he said about respecting the power and being sketchy is 100% on point
I had a 1994 CR500 and to this day it is my favourite bike of all time. Wish I still had it. Trail rode mine.
Dig a rut, do a wheelie in any gear or putt putt around and it is always happy.
Ensure your riding buddies are not close behind you before you open the throttle as they will not be happy with everything from the ground it will throw at them.
Carson is such a cool guy. Living the dream after the hard work.
500cc two-strokes are still my favourite racing to watch.
Nice to see a pleasant young man actually have an understanding of the big bore two strokes from back in the day and the non groomed tracks that they ran on.well done😊
I got my first 500 new in 1985, KX 500. Wow! What a beast she was! Maybe the most powerful production 500 ever made, but the power band was so short that you couldn't shift it fast enough to stay in the power! Luckily my friend new a guy who was racing the same bike professionally. He ported my cylinder and what a difference that made, it had a much better power band! Carson you have to ride a KX 500! 😎 🤘 ☠️
I had a 1988 CR500RJ back in the day. With the stock pipe, the hit was a little too much so I changed to an after market pipe which smoothed the powerband and gave it some more top end.....handy in the Finke Desert Race 😊....and just easier to live with generally. A great engine.
Kurt Nicoll rode a factory 500 at Glen Helen recently out of their museum
Had a 91 several years back I rode a lot, hill climbs, trails, even a hare scramble or 2. It was my main bike for awhile. Thought i was pretty quick on it and felt good. Then I got '18 yz250x and realized how much easier the yz was to ride both skill needed and conditioning and that I was way faster on it than the 500. Had a rough race on the 500, went and did the same course on the yz and it was night and day. Sold the 500 a few weeks later. Awesome bikes but they certainly have their place where they shine, was not the right tool for the job I had. Kinda wish I still had it thought for Sunday cruises.
I rode both CR500s and KX500s at the track when I was 11-12 years old back in the mid 90s.
First time out I pinned it at the long back straight like I did w my RM80. Used the same braking point.
Do i need to mention I missed the turn and ended up in the woods 😂.
The guys said I could ride em if I could Kickstart them. And obviously I could
JMB, David Bailey, Broc Glover, Ward, the original RJ and Magoo all rode the open class bikes really, really well. People always debate about who was smoother JMB or Bailey. But, the guy who should also be in that conversation is Ron Lechien. He rode that 500cc two stroke with such finesse and style. It was incredible.
Without a doubt. Just watch the 85 usgp, only his 2nd ride on a 500...unreal
@@traileater Yup... I was lucky enough to be at Carlsbad that day. He was so smooth and so fast!
I got a 2017 husqvarna fe501 with a cr500 in it. I dont ride mx, i ride pits and trails. The low end power and torque is what its all about. I can hit hill climbs alot slower then guys on 510cc 4 strokes or 450s or 300 2 strokes and just tractor up. Love the 500 2 strokes. With BRC racing here in canada doing what they do im sure ill have a counterbalanced engine soon. All the power no vibration!
idk if anyone will see this, but dad has a Service Honda cr500 that's been stuffed into a 2011 Honda 250f frame. It's the sickest bike in the world I think, so fun to ride, even when I'm still riding a 125, quite the jump from bike to bike!
I still have & ride a 86, 87, 09CR500af & a 99 kx500. I probably love the 87 that most overall. I ride the CR500AF as a second bike to my 300. I have done about as much as you can do to make it “mountain/enduro friendly.” I say “friendly” with caution. Ha The only thing my bikes are missing are a counterbalanced shaft or crank & electric start. I have ridden a couple BRC500’s. They are the real deal. Would love a KTM BRC500 & eventually a Tomasin T500. Love watching your riding videos!
I have a cr500 and I ride it a lot in the trails. It’s fun.
There should be a sticker on every CR500 tank that reads "If you trail ride this bike it will kill you" everyone I knew who owned them left them on the truck and took the 250s.
I have to ride a 500 2stroke before I die its a must
10 years ago I read a magazine article probably transworld saying that AF 500s were terrible bikes. Browns opinion on the “new”style of frames it is pretty interesting
Love Carson brown, peoples champ and insano
A CR500 engine on an aluminum frame shakes the bones out of your hands! However, on their production steel frames, it is more manageable. A couple of shops will balance the crankshaft to reduce the vibes.
@@spacejaime you guys have no glue as to what's your talking about.
Your so wrong. No magazine has ever said that about a CR500AF. Not one. Do your research before you make stupid comments like that. Gees. The CR500 as well as the CR500AF is the bike everyone wants. It's the Bike All manufactures hate because they know it's faster than the 450 4pukes.
@@dennismillus4581- I have very good glues at home.
@dennismillus4581 - I never said it was no good. Actually it was the best open MX two stroke until it was shut from the production line. The time that I tried one - 1986 or 1987 - I found it vibrated too much for me. Also it was a beast to control, too much power!
I ride a CRF250 with a KX500 motor. Having a KX500 headpipe weleded to a Service Honda CRF pipe makes for a interesting power band. Powerful down low and then tear your arms off.
As a cr250 owner ive had the chance to ride a 1985 or 86 cr500 that thing was a tractor around the local track. His brother had a US built crf450 2017 with a 89 cr500 engine that thing felt sketchy as.. but his buddys 1997 kx500 flet alot nicer and linear power out of the three I'm still hoping to pull out my old boys ..PE400 and give her some love
CR500s make great trail bikes. Great bottom end torque and power on demand.
I´ve ridden a CR500 a few times, including an alu-framed version. I was surprised how narrow the powerband is, you have to shift it a lot. I din´t like the alu framed version, it vibrated much more than the steel framed bikes.
If you respect it ! then your dialed. He nailed it. Also nailed it on racing mid 80s early 90s I was there it was definitely a magical time you should have seen some of these guys in the desert on KX and CR500s look up Danny Hamel he was the King on his kx500 in the desert you should have seen this guy ride !
Kx500 all day ❤❤❤
Why…?
RM500 personally. First ever 500 rode. 😬😂
dude killed it at daytona on the 01 cr250.
We gotta get carson to ride 999lazers fleet of big bore bikes. The brc husky and yamaha and the 700cc!
Love riding my 500 on the trails is awesome
I had a 90 cr500r and boy i miss that shear raw power proper arm stretching what a bike i really miss that buzzz it has to be the best motocross bike ever made in my opinion a real mans machine not for an average rider thats for sure my only wish would be for honda to make em once again and stop these fools asking silly money for em as the ones for sale are to tired out and not tight and crisp like i remember no chance come on honda your company would make an absolute killing i promise you that id be the first to purchase a new one straight up
There’s a reason they talk about them instead of ripping them. No hate. Guarantee we all had a legend on a 500 following on a 250. Id crash and wonder where my pops went. He’d wait to see if I could keep up. Love ya pops.
The beast,500 cr..be ware
Love 500s! Building a KX in a 2016 chassis. It will be available for a few people to ride when it’s complete.
There is an outfit in Oz that make square tube frames for the CR500.
Love you man
Keep it up ya try it
I love 2 strokes
I truly agree. Bring back a race class for the classic 2 strokes! 👍
Dave Thorpe was the man this side of the pond back then
Someone close to me is selling a mint KX500 for $8500…way outta my price range but super sick. I’ll stick with my in progress build KDX 200 hahaha. Just waiting on the replate
My 87 KDX 200 was my favorite bike I've ever owned, so much power for a 200 and rides like a gold wing
Buy the KX500
Still have an '82 IT490 (wearing slimmer YZ bodywork) '88 CR500 (making a RC500 clone out of it) a '96 CR500 and a '97 KX500.
Ill never switch to a 4-stroke or an electric making angry vacuum cleaner noises!
The best episode!!
Check out little dudes like leisk and geboers ride open classers wide open in GPs of the day.
Carson is a boss
Most of the open class bikes had a short, punchy powerband.Hence the need to shift them, maybe not as much as a 125,but Alot more than a modern 450.I miss all of the 2 strokes, wish they would bring back at least 1 class at the nationals, and also let the 250 2strokes race in the 250 class, its a fair fight agaunst the newest generation of 250f's.peace.
Check out Neville Bradshaw, racing the CR500 in 2023
Creating a company so if anyone has anything they have they want to remember we’re going to make sure we respect the things we love. Reach out and I will make sure it comes to life
Send pictures to me. I’ll let you create the look and feel. I’ll send the 25 pack to you for friends and family. We sell them on my site. 25 percent goes to you. 25 percent goes to veterans and extreme sport athletes
They definitely need to bring back to 500cc 2bangas to racing. I stopped racing couple years after 4strokes started as it made it too expensive and straightforward aswell as double cc of 2bangas which was bullshit. If people want to ride in straight lines go roadbike racing instead of 4stroke boredom. Avagud1 fella's
Some have put that 500 motor into modern 450 frame & suspension
Yeah honda did.....called the CR500AF
Aluminum frame 500s are bad ass
I had a cr500. Obviously I sold it 3 weeks after I bought it that’s how I’m still here to talk about it lmao. That thing almost killed me
I ride an 01 and never really heard of people bending frames. Maybe carsons hasn't been annealed or treated properly after all the welding thats been done?
01 what?
@@Atomic6851 CR500 01 model
He was talking about bending the steel frame CR 500. He said the aluminum conversion bikes had weird geometry .
There's not alot of riders that can truly push a cr 500 to the limit. When your as fast as he is the limits show. He'd be one hellva R&D guy for any of the OEMs
I’ve heard a lot of people and frame flexing but if that were true the frame would break so it would be a liability. I would talk with Honda about it because that a huge safety issue. I would ask them to send me a dram that won’t flex
There is no Bog on a CR500. Third gear is where it's at everywhere.
KX500s are the same. On a track you'll spend most of your time in 3rd.
@@1320fastback CR500's do it better. Lol
@@dennismillus4581 The CR5 was absolutely the better track bike.
I own a88 cr500 af based off a 2000 250 chassis and I have absolutely no complaints. Sure it’s a beast, definetly not for those short skirt wearing ladies that only like the smooth power from those 450’s
Can't you race it in the 450 class
No.
I thought the ama rule was 500 cc max
I rode the kx 500, they fell apart, I switched to the CR500s , much better it can turn
I wonder if this is the kid who was smoking everyone at S.I.R. on his kx60 in the summer of 1997.
Massive balls high up on the gas tank to try to hold the front down
They should let 500 2 strokes race the 450 class or at least let the 300cc 2 strokes compete in the big boy class .They have become way too comfortable with the modern 4 stroke .I was at the Vegas supercross when Yamaha and Doug Henry changed everything and then when he won the outdoors on that thing I knew then the 2 strokes days where numbered and I was kid who could see it .
Carson needs to get on a kx500. I have both steel and an Alum frame I built.
Ronnie mac
Kx500 is fun to ride, I was lucky enough to get to ride one.
Carson, I have a kx 500 you can ride....😅
IMO the best 500 era was mid to late 70s to mid 80s, after the works bikes were killed off in the US and productions bikes were forced in, rarely did the Japanese make many changes to the class, BNG most of the time, they basically got killed by a thousand cuts by the AMA, really on Ward, Johnson, Lechien, later JMB and Stanton really were the only 500 guys in the US, Europe had deeper 500 class's right up until the MXGP class was implemented and 4 and 2strokes competed against each other without any of the US politics and AMA BS, but 77to 85 was real development in the class, even with Maico issues after 83 the MStar 500s from 85 on were pretty good, US first world Champ was on a 500 in 82. real men rode 500s, I hate this easy to ride , or easy to work psychology of todays era, work hard play hard, race harder, I'm surrounded by snowflakes at work and the tracks and trails, big guys putting around on 450s cant corner, cant hold the right line, no track awareness or other rider awareness, no different on the roads in the daily driver Muppets everywhere with all that technology yet worse than ever, ironic that US is no longer the dominate force in MX, SX doesn't sell bikes MX does, average people that buy bikes don't ride Supercross, wouldn't last 2 seconds on a SX track if they dared or tried. Ironic bikes sales are frankly a joke compared to what they were in the 70s and 80's, that era invented single shocks, water cooling disc brakes, USD forks and many other evolutions ,there would have been more 500s sold then than all the class of 4strokes put together today and then some. So many choices in MX and off road. Dam even Suzuki dominated the class for awhile with some of the greatest names of all time, where are they now the brand that introduced EFI first in 08. Do like CB though have followed his channel for many years and he can ride a 2 stroke better than most in this era. Dig deeper though, the only year ever all 3 class's were won by a brand including the SX title was Yamaha in 78. Burgett 500cc, Hannah 250 cc outdoors cc/ premier SX title, Glover 125cc outdoors, Honda could emulate that this year. Even with all there 2 stoke winning history they never did that in one season. Maybe get Carson to go to the VMX at Farleigh Castle in Britain sometime, it would be cool to see him on a Doc Wobb 500cc built bike, that would be sick!!!
Why does everyone totally forget about David Bailey?? He was the smoothest 500 rider ever!! JMB is lucky he never had to face a prime Bailey!
To my point fuck the AMA they bring back the 500 YIU have my money
All day long 2 strokes for life
Who doesn’t wanna see it
Jett and Hunter short shifted the video they ripped nothing !!
Bring them back
4 strokes are fun but I’m the end I do t think how expensive they are and made a already expensive sport even more expensive for the average dirt bike rider .2strokes where killed because of POLITICAL ECO REASONS and the sport has never been the same .2 strokes are easier to work on and way way cheaper to maintain and to be honest I think more skill is required to learn and ride them .All you 4 stroke die hard fans who prefer them over 2 strokes beware guys cause the E-MOTO people are coming for you guys now and while I have no problem with E Dirt Bikes I think they should stay in there lane and have there own class .Make no mistake they are coming for the 4 stroke and having lived through the death of 2 stroke o don’t want to see that happen again now .We Moto guys need to stick together
Mr. Ronald McDonald
#fuckcalifornia
Bring them BACK ALREADY
Had a couple cr 500 stock n built. Blown up a couple 450s lol.
Cr 500 will pull a 450 "if you got traction" till around 70mph. 450 will walk right past it after that. With stock gearing anyways. 500 puts down way more peak torque! Not to be confused with the 450s linear flat torque curve with torque everywere. But like he Said big bore ... no power valve. Just zero over Rev from the 500. Like 7000 rpm vs like 10 to 12 from the 450. You can port the 500 but it's never hitting 12000 rpm. I don't think even lightning n balancing flywheel would get you there. I rode a fully built and balanced kx 500 .. garauntee it did tripple digits on dirt. But handled closer to a xr 500 than a cr
Why are there the same intros for all these clips? It’s very annoying. Just some feedback. Thanks.
2 strokes are slow af
Yeah right 😂
who is this WOMAN?
The Secret to Riding a Honda CR500...? Don't. Ride a KX-500.
