    I stand corrected , after more research and learning I was tying the FG knot wrong I’m going back to it. It’s very small and long to go though the guides very well, better than other knots I was disappointed when it kept coming apart when I was trying to break off when a lure would get hung. Thanks for the video. God bless.

    I use the Crazy Alberto knot with my spinning rods 12# Nanofil to whatever leader I’m using for what I’m throwing and I’ve never had the knot break on a fish or snag. The line always breaks not the knot. It’s easier to tie compared to the FG so I’ve never tried to learn the FG. It goes through the guides real smooth. Great vid !

    • @Jojo61973
      @Jojo61973 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alberto does not pass through the guides properly,but for me is the most strong knot as there is no line overlapping and when there is tension it only gets stronger and tighter. Never fails or slips.

      Completely agree! I spent a winter learning to tie the FG. Once proficient I gained confidence by fishing for river sauger and walleye.
      I now have 100% confidence in the FG knot and can tie it in about 3 minutes. I do secure the tag of the braid with a little bit of super glue to stop the knot from unraveling over time.

    I've only read a couple of pages of comments here so apologies if I'm repeating others but it's not just the strength of the knot but it's ability to absorb shock of a big hit. Appreciate that should be absorbed by the line (or should be depending on what is used) but there are plenty of immensely strong knots that will snap at a big shock load.

    • @Stinkybeard
      @Stinkybeard ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not sure that makes sense in this case as both materials (braided and floro) don't really stretch much or absorb any shock really on their own, not sure if the knot when pulled tight with materials that don't absorb shock or stretch very well is going to stretch or absorb shock very well. I can see this being the case if mono is in the mix and the test could be skewed because the mono is going to stretch and the knot may make it stretch even more?

  • @AlexRuiz-vh9zg
    @AlexRuiz-vh9zg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I ONLY use an FG knot followed with a Rizutto Finish (I think half hitches are okay, but don’t like when they fray and may compromise knot). I land tarpon, snook, bull reds, sharks, grouper, amberjacks and FG knot never fails. Tied it so many times now that I can re-tie within a couple of minutes while on the boat. Shortest leader I will tie is about the length of the rod I’m using or longer...so I’m set for a 3-4 day fishing trip and do not need to re-tie unless if I get snagged or hung up on bottom. Lastly, this is the BEST line to leader knot that enables the angler to cast the knot (especially with longer leaders) through the guides without causing any guide damage due to the extremely low profile of the knot.

      @adamb306 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I will say if you're struggling, anchor your braid on your right pinkie finger to control the tension on the mainline. You have to manage a lot of different tensions to get the knot to sit right while you're tying your wraps. Having it there allows you to not only keep it tense, but position that tension at the right angle to snug down the wraps as you go. As with any of these lots of practicing is the answer!

    Depends entirely on what kind of fishing I'm intending on doing, just catching any and every fish on 10-20lb light gear, I'll keep tying the good old double uni, never been broken off at that pound test, anything higher than 40lb, I'll tie the FG knot just because I feel like it doesn't get caught in the guides as much as a big old double uni, but for smaller lines, there's no need for the strongest knot, you're not going out to catch 80lb tarpon on 10lb gear, or at least you probably shouldn't be, and unless you're targeting Bonefish or hard fighting Jacks, you're not gonna find very much in the 20lb class that'll overpower a double uni knot.

    The next big innovation in line will be the elimination of knots between braid and fluorocarbon and use of a bonding agent and/or a small micro sleeve each line end can feed into and be sealed with heat or epoxy to bond the two lines together. People hate tying knots and a good engineer will put an end to the cumbersome knots. I am working on some innovations now to solve this problem.

    In the olden days, they determined the pound test of a line by tying on say 10 pounds and on slack line dropping it 1 foot where slack is gone. If it held at 10lb but broke with 11lb, it was 10 lb test line.
    Is that still how they still do it?
    And, if it is, why did these lines break with only 5 pounds?
    Also, did they break at the knot or somewhere on the line?

      It's kind of like a rope. When you get a knot in a rope it reduces the strength of the rope at that point due to the bends/kinks on the rope by a certain percentage. Just like with tree work. We always use a bowline knot. Out of all the knots, it doesn't reduce the integrity of the rope as much as the other knots, and it can be untied most of the time even after being cinched down to ridiculously tight.
      I would like to see where the lines broke as well.

    That seemed really low for 10# line. I can almost always get over the listed weight on braid fairly easily, and mono is usually pretty close to the listed weight (I’ve had Trilene Big Game hold more than the listed weight, definitely put 55 on 50, I almost think the 40 held just shy of 50 if memory serves).
    Where did they break off at?

    For tuna we use fg or the pr knot exclusively . Pr is a bit of pain and doesn’t pass through the guides well when casting top water stick baits .

    Since all but the FG knot failed under static load, I doubt that the stiffness of the dowels had anything to do with the knot failures.

    Have you tried tie an alberto using a bobin, its pretty easy.

  • @mistertwister1816

    The Uni starts to lose (badly) at lower test. Fishing with 4 Lb braid to 4 Lb or less fluoro (or mono), braid cuts the fluoro within the uni knot rendering it useless. Moving to a knot like the Alberto, where the load-bearing section of braid wraps around 2 sections of mono/fluoro, improves knot strength. I don’t test with buckets. Instead, I just test with a loop made from 1 section of braid and 1 section of fluoro. The ends of each section of line are tied together (braid-to-fluoro) to create a continuous loop containing 2 braid-to-fluoro knots. When this loop is pulled to see which knot wins, Alberto or Uni, the Alberto blows away the useless Uni. It’s great that some like the Uni at higher test, but my experience is that I’ll not waste my time with it for light line. Let me know if you disagree, but please do the test as I describe it prior to doing so. My thoughts…

    I have tied and used all of these knots and the GT is by far the easiest, quickest and smallest of them all. Not sure what you are doing but almost zero GT failure at the knot.

    Hey mate quick question if I'll use 15lb braid what leader ratio should I use? Should I use 15lb florou as well? Or higher?

    • @DishesandFishes
      @DishesandFishes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I try to keep the line diameters close, it should say on the packaging. Typically you’re going to reduce the lb strength from your braid to your flouro, so with a 15 lb braid I’d rock a ~12 lb flouro

    I HATE tying the FG knot, but I can guarantee it’s the strongest knot out there by a mile. I had a goose snag my braid on the way down after a cast, and the goose ended up getting a spook snagged in its wing, where it snapped the line at the double Palomar knot at the lure. I was using 25lbs braid and a 20lbs flouro leader. It didn’t even phase the FG knot. Absolutely blown away.

    I use the double uni all the time and it rarely fails me. I will, however, admit that I cannot tie an FG knot. I’ve tried, but it’s just too hard for me. Probably because I’m old and my vision isn’t the greatest. IDK. Thx

    * The length of the line being used has no bearing on the strength of the knot. If you're testing the strength of a particular brand of line, then you may want to use longer sections of line. A longer section may reveal manufacturing inconsistencies more readily than a short 8 inch section.

  • @--dh--

    3:57 I don't think you gave the Albright knot a fair shake. Just before you added weight to the double uni bucket, it's lip was resting on the Albright bucket, thus adding more weight to the Albright bucket.
    Disclaimer: I'm partial to the Albright.
    Also: I am thinking about switching my leader ties to the FG knot. As for joining 2 lines for a top shot or additional line, what would be the best knot that will not make a mess in the spool?

    The PR is difficult (or should I rather say time consuming)... The FG is a good alternative to the PR when you are on the boat because it's easy and fast. It does require practice though. It's also always informative if you show where the line broke. Thanks.

    I like the FG knot when I'm fishing ultra light with micro guides on my rod, it just goes through easier. On my rods with bigger eyes the double uni is my go to, but my experience is that it tightens up excessively after a fight with a large fish or log, and should probably be retied after that.
