    You’re definitely way too hard on the story. Roger Craig Smith in the Shadow Generations portion sounded cheesy but not too cheesy in order for me to still take him seriously, which is why his voice acting suffered in Sonic Generations, Sonic Colors, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Forces. Honestly, it might be just as good as it was in Frontiers, maybe even better. In Frontiers, they made Sonic’s voice a little too deep and serious, but in that specific cutscene for Shadow Generations, it’s a great mix of the cheesy voice Roger has given in the previous Sonic games and the more serious voice from Frontiers. Rouge’s voice definitely suffers more, but it’s getting better from how it was in Dream Team. Gerald isn’t angry and psychotic because this version of the character hasn’t experienced the loss yet. The story for Shadow Generations is simple and small but very effective because it’s a character-driven story for Shadow. Not the best story, but you’re making it out to be like it’s one of the worst.

      What? When did I ever make it out to be the WORSE Snic story lmao 😅. I just said it was the weakest ASPECT in an already phenomenal game. For the aforementioned dialogue and voice acting reasons. I even limited to just Rouge and Sonic, but overall, I thought the story was a step forward, and better than Frontiers.

      I get that, but it makes her a more one-dimensional character. It would've been cooler to say, see a more immature or maybe ven darker side to her. Ya know, something to make us think Shadow would see her disgust for humanity for something. But as it is now, she does just kinda feel like the generic damsel in distress ATM. Which I guess is fine for some.

      @@Plexi.T she's not a damsel in distress? She's literally the one rock that especially in the Gerald's diary notes state keep shadow grounded. She is the light of what the human race could be. She's emotionally strong willed and caring for others even to her own detriment. She's supposed to be a light that shows shadow the way out of his darkness. She's got far more agency especially in dark beginnings than you give her credit for lmao. Omg you wouldn't know media literacy if it bit you in the ass.

    Counter point for Cyberspace in Frontiers, you say the environmental design felt inorganic and manufactured, which is true, but you could argue that that’s the point because Cyberspace is both of those things

    I personally think Sonic Gens perfected the boost formula, while this one is trying to perfect the Open Zone formula. These two are going for mostly different things, and it shows when most of it's praise comes from people liking the fact that Shadow barely is a boost game anymore, it just has the boost as an ability.

      I get what you mean, but I would say the open zones were more of a level design idea rather than the main mechanic, like how the boost is. This is why I say Shadow improved upon it because its level design is like a mix of open zone AND linear boost Sonic stage progression.

      I prefer the generations/unleashed boost formula. These games have a great build up and conversation of momentum. Meanwhile, games like forces, frontiers, and Shadow generations have characters lose excessive speed, feel *relatively** slow in comparison. Not to mention my gripe with how clunky rail switching feels

      @-A-M yeah, speed alone ain't cutting it for me. It comes to a point where the OG Gens and Unleashed stages don't really reward any creative use of the character moveset or movement tech (that aren't glitches), while in Shadow Gens you can use your moveset to access routes and skips you wouldn't just by knowing thr moveset's capabilities and pushing for skillful skips that don't break the game too much yet are still satisfying to pull off after a lot of playthroughs. Ofc. Not every OG boost level is like that, but most Shadow Gens and even frontiers levels reward more the movement aspect of things so...

    You nailed the point about the 2D especially! The dynamic camera perspectives and cool 2D setpieces make it actually pretty fun. Most of the time, you can ACTUALLY SEE ahead of you in 2D while still going semi-fast (which are both upgrades from Forces LMAO) because of the tilted camera angle. Sunset Heights Act 2 is my personal favourite 2D stage in the game, and it has so many cool setpieces tightly knitted together, plus the paths on different background layers like in Classic Seaside Hill.
    I think really the important thing is that they recognised how 2D can be designed well here by using the benefit of being 2.5D as an advantage.

      You get it, man. That's why I felt like the classic Sonic stages are OG gens were so fun. That camera was constantly shifting, with 3d elements constantly intercepting and crossing over into your pathway. Even if the gameplay was still technically "2d" the world, you were in sure as hell wasn't.

    I don’t think they can really be compared. Unleashed/Gens is quite different from Shadow/Frontiers. I would say Generations perfected the original boost, while Shadow perfected the new boost gameplay that was introduced in Forces and Frontiers.
    Unleashed/Gens Sonic is much faster, which made him quite slippery and stiff when he wasn’t going fast, hence the lack of platforming sections. And also why the quick step, drift, and slide are used more frequently. It was more about speed and reaction time.
    Shadow/Frontiers made it much easier and funner to platform, but at the cost of speed, and also why they essentially got rid of the other moves, and gave him a double jump.
    I also think Unleashed/Gens is just a more pleasant to look at from a visual standpoint. Something about the models and animations in the newer games just feels inferior to Unleashed/Gens. I think the animations also use less frames which is why Unleashed/Gens look much smoother. I also don’t like Shadow’s animations that much, they just look stiff. I especially don’t like the hover boost, not just because it looks lazy, but because he looks frozen in midair. His skating also looks pretty stiff. I didn’t like the hover in original Gens either, but at least it looked like he was moving instead of being frozen.
    But either way I don’t think they can be definitively compared. It’s just a matter of which one you prefer.

    Honestly Shadow Gens is personal favorite rn, i really had fun playing through the game despite some hiccups (doom morph slippery). The mix of the boost formula and limited open world worked great, i have mixed feelings on Frontiers bcs i love the boss fights and overworld activities, the open world can feel empty and slippery.
    Ngl i wish the game was longer, I would've love to see portions of Gerald's journal animated such as Gerald convincing his son to send Maria to the ark with him, his thoughts on double crossing Black Doom or showing that Emerald is technically the reason GUN went aboard the Ark after going on a rampage.

    9:43 Umm Unleashed? Even if you disregard the hub world and Werehog that are entirely 3D, the boost stages are at least 2/3 3D overall

    Sonic feels slippery by design. Every platform section in the og boost games mainly Unleashed and Gens was made to precisely skip them with well timed boost, slides and stomps you also have to aim Sonic's direction and it makes you think but you also have to be quick about it, pretty brutal if you're trying to speed run but super rewarding to finally master an entire level. Shadow is much more smooth and his controls are tight but that's because the level design is huge and much more platform focused you also have abilities so you have to have those in mind, old gens controls wouldn't work at all. I think both games are equally good just very different mechanically. The only thing I would give to Shadow gens is that the story is waaay better. I'm pretty satisfied with the package.

      I don't think the slippery physics were done purposefully (since they pretty removed them in this game) but it did encourage the player to never slow down in the boost levels, which I felt was a unhealthy design choice, even if uninterested.
      I never quite agreed with the whole "punish the player for messing up" approach to Sonic level design. It feels archaic and not in line with modern game design philosophies, in my opinion.

    Shadow Generations definitely has me really excited for what Sonic Team does next, if they can pull off such an amazing game with a short length, imagine what can be done with a game the length of Frontiers!

    I don't like Sonic Generations at all unfortunately. I never have. For lots of reasons but mainly because it controls like ass. But Shadow Generations is practically perfect. Probably my favorite game in the series.

    What level in this game "has only one level and then just ends"? From all I saw all six main zones have two levels, with the second being a 2D boost level, except in Radical Highway which has two 3D boost levels (so in total five in 2D and seven in 3D).

      Sorry, my wording was bad here. What I meant to say was that one game segment, the one where you go to Chaos Island, has only 1 stage to play through, and then you IMEMEDIATELY go on to fight Mephiles, instead of say, getting a second level, like the rest of the segments.

      Black Comet would've been an excellent level for Shadow Gens. Doom Morph and Doom Surf to swim through the purple goopy waters and Doom Wing + Doom Blast to fly through the portions where you originally needed to ride the birds.

    This game remind me that the only part of frontiers I found fun are the super sonic boss fights, the regular gameplay wasn’t fun, this how every future sonic game should play, instead of a frontier stage that made no sense a shadow the headgehog level should have been there, I play with Japanese audio so voice acting was great

    I hope to see two rankings for Shadow Generations: ranking all of the levels without the Doom Wings and ranking all of the levels with the Doom Wings. After practicing a lot, Radical Highway Acts 1 and 2 are not only my favorite levels in this game (yes, a final level in a Sonic game is the best level; what an incredible feat), but they’re also my favorite final levels in this entire franchise. Usually, final levels in Sonic games are either my least favorite or not my favorite. But Radical Highway Acts 1 and 2, specifically with the Doom Wings, are so much fun and satisfying to play. Without the Doom Wings, Radical Highway suffers the curse of a final level not being my favorite in a Sonic game, but it’s still not my least favorite level in the game.

      While I do plan to rank the music and stages of this game individually. I know there was such a vast difference in the level design, depending on if you use the doom wings or not. I have to play each level again to check that out I guess

    Great video! I just disagree in saying that it was only from now on that Sonic Team got it right in creating a cohesive gameplay for the hedgehog, since since Sonic Frontiers it has been possible to control Sonic going much faster than the speed he normally reached in Sonic Adventure. He is still slower than in Sonic Unleashed, but it makes up for it with the ability to play with Sonic (Tails, Knuckles and Amy) in a responsive way, since the only error that Sonic Unleashed had was in the sections where Sonic lost all speed or when he needed to move in a circular fashion (which was very rare in the game).
    I think it was only after Sonic Frontiers that there was a game that really used the boost formula well (especially in the open zone), after Sonic Unleashed, because all the others, Colors, Generations and Force had the speed reduced in the boost and that greatly diminished the sensation of speed that the 2D Sonic games and Sonic Unleashed and Adventure had. As much as I like Sonic Generations from 2011, controlling Sonic using the boost is much less enjoyable and rewarding than playing with Sonic in Sonic Unleashed. Even running without the boost, after using it for a while, it already gives a sensation of high speed, like in the sections where Sonic and Shadow were much faster than in the original gameplay section of Sonic 2006 (like in the stage of the Train to rescue Elisa). I'm not saying that Sonic X Shadow didn't have better gameplay than the Cyber ​​Space stages, but since Sonic Frontiers in the open Zone it's been perfect to play with Sonic and his friends without the boost speed getting in the way of making turns and the way in which Sonic acquires all the rings of the ability only makes it better to play. Just one observation in the original Sonic Generations Sonic loses all Momentum when doing an air boost and this made it very difficult to run again, this didn't happen in Unleashed and he only regained Momentum in Sonic Frontiers (or maybe even in Forces), but changing the mechanics in the settings.

    Great review! I have to disagree with you on the story tho I feel like if you look into the story especially keeping the events of Shadow 05 in mind there’s a lot to appreciate in the story in terms of Shadow as a character and showcasing the bond he has with Maria

      Thanks for your honest opinion man. I wasn't trying to say that the stor was bad by any means. In fact, I think its better than Frontiers. I was just explaining why I think it's the weakest aspect compared to all of the OTHER things this game does awesomely, as well as just give some of my critiques.

    Even though the 2d levels are pretty good in this game, I think they should finally have a fully 3D boost game. It feels slightly dated to still have to rely on 2D for the boost formula. I also hope going forward they keep incorporating similar powers to chaos spear and chaos control into future Sonic games. I would also like less or no gimmicks in a future boost game. The doom powers were definitely a good gimmick but not perfect such as doom morph being really awkward to control.

    If I had some complains for this game, I would say:
    -that some mechanic are badly intuitive despite their interesting depth like the ability to jump with Doom morph and the sidesteps when Black Doom send us to Radical highway the third time: the game show us we can slide inside a tube but the explaination was bad (especially at the end of this part).
    -too bad that GUN isn't involved as much in this game because Dark beginnings (which is available in the actual game) shows us they knew about Time eater but even at the end, we don't have more about it.
    -the conclusion is a little abrupt. I appreaciate how Black Doom is used (he doesn't shine for his writting but is a credible threat and a good manipulative villain for Shadow) and Maria was there to prevent Shadow to be overwhelmed by his feelings and explaining the meaning of his name. The story is good: clearly not in best in the franchise (Sonic adventure 2 and Sonic battle are much better) but the story would have been much more good if it is was a little longer and if we had more cutscenes after the defeat of Time eater, showing how Shadow reacts at Sonic's birthday party (because he was reluctant to join them)
    -and as you said, too bad we didn't get a level from Shadow 2005 (and no, Colony ark doesn't count)

      I agree. In Shadow 2005, he hates Shadow because he saw Gerald working with Black Doom and considered him as a monster until Shadow defeated Black Doom and the black comet. Now, Abraham respects him much more after he did for Earth and it would be nice to him a little more.

      @marguya4643 true, but I don't think Sonic Gens and Unleashed have THAT worse of boost stages from Shadow Gens. Unlike Forces, colors, and cyberspace.
