BMW X7 M60i vs Range Rover P530: battle of the V8s | PistonHeads

  • Both have 530hp. Both are gigantic SUVs. But there can only be one winner.
We’ll start with the BMW. Not much of a looker, but it’s packing a punch. It’s arguably the sportier of the two, with some mild hybrid assistance giving it some extra low down punch over the Range Rover despite matching it on power. But, when it comes to outright luxury, look no further than the almighty Rangie. We can’t choose, so we’re leaving this up to John to decide.

My P530 is as quiet as my Continental GT and S8 (more quiet than the Bentley) before, as you can expect it from a Range Rover. I've heard about that issue a few times. Maybe pre-series vehicles used as demo cars? I've had Range Rovers since 2007, 322s and 405s, no problems at all, always the petrol V8.

X7 is the sportier drive. Has an updated engine and is better suited for the 99% of the time used for on-road driving rather than off - road 😁
IDrive 8 needs some time for accommodation, but the interior is looking a little bit more premium with it... of course, depending on the personal taste and needs, can't go wrong with either... ✌

To summarise, comparing these two is like a comparison between a strong cheddar and Parmesan, both are great but for different reasons, the Range Rover is surely the best overall vehicle. Ps Third row of seats is a nonsense, too many compromises and often total destruction of practicality and space! Three rows of seats was invented for motor manufacturers to increase vehicle appeal so they could make more money, smart folk realise the very idea is flawed, really want your kids sat in the rearmost seats when you’re rear ended by another vehicle, I don’t think so! Despite the mismatch of vehicles, I enjoyed the review, cheers 👍

Interior of Range indeed screams luxury and minimalist, better than the X7 - I have the old X7 in Le Mans blue (very rare) and thought I should have bought the Range (but wait for it for 9 months) - after i saw the back I knew the choice was right. I went for the X7 because it can do both calm wafty driving and somewhat sporty/engaging driving. The 7-seat implementation is the best there is... an actually usable 3rd row! The S68 engine is an absolute force of nature, it will do 4.3's 0-60 all day. They've improved most of the unintuitive iDrive features with v8.5 so thankfully its much more user-friendly now. Although I will still NEVER understand why BMW removed the cruise control distance setting buttons from the steering wheel and replaced them with NOTHING... could understand if they put something more important there, but to leave them blank is just STUPID

@@dnice362 the 4.4 from bmw is the engine option causing the most issues out of all the engine options available on the new Range Rover, and the chassis’s are brilliant? The suspension components claim is nonsense, air suspension is something that’s bound to wear out on any vehicle, it becomes a known thing to look out for on majority of vehicles with it, and we wont get into why the L322 was the most unreliable Land Rover, even Ford was able to improve upon what BMW had left behind.

Modern BMWs are literally THE least reliable cars you can buy, especially ones with turbo V8s and air suspensions. I mean even a Durango or Trackhawk is more reliable than the X5/X7. As for the Range Rover, yes it's no Toyota but it has an exquisite interior, great ride quality and infotainment. Not to mention the unbeatable off-road ability.

Everyone needs a safari ready 7500 lb school bus with room for 8 and a height to make America’s housewives feel powerful. And because their time is so valuable, it must make it to 60 in 5 seconds. I'm sure there are people who think that way but it can't be many.
Range Rover up to very recently made the Defender, cool to some, but crude, agricultural and ancient. Also the Evoque, a small, cheaper SUV. Let's not forget owned by an Indian company. With almost the worst reputation for reliability in the motor industry.
Mercedes-Benz make cars like the S-Class, SLS, SLR with McLaren, AMG One, there is an F1 team.
BMW made the engine for McLaren' F1 car. Infact Range Rover used BMW engines for many years.
This argument that buyers of Range Rover wouldn't consider Mercedes or BMW is ......... I'll be kind and just say flawed.
