    Small update to this one, as it turns out if you use the Extreme overdrive mode with adaptive sync (FreeSync, G-Sync) disabled, you will get WAY WORSE results. We always test with adaptive sync enabled and it looks like when you enable this feature, it will switch to using a more modest set of overdrive settings. That might be important for you if you plan on using this monitor without adaptive sync (use the Super Fast or Fast mode)

      @Tr0nism 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think you dont mean "without Overdrive" but "without an adaptive sync technology"?

    • @MataGyula
      @MataGyula 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you for the update. For added clarity, to prevent overshoot "AMD FreeSync Premium Pro" should be left enabled in the OSD - but does FreeSync have to be then also enabled for the game we are running? In my case, I have FreeSync enabled in the OSD, but in Radeon Settings I have FreeSync set to disabled when launching CS:GO (motivated by a brief online search with the results saying that having FreeSync enabled introduces input lag in CS:GO).

    • @Hardwareunboxed
      @Hardwareunboxed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      Based on my testing with an Nvidia GPU it needs both the AMD FreeSync Premium Pro setting enabled, AND G-Sync to be enabled in the Nvidia Control Panel. However, it also looks like if you override the G-Sync setting on an individual game basis (while keeping the global setting enabled) that it will retain the 'better' overdrive settings

      I know right. I even bought on sale for 350 dollars. I was so hesitant to buy it because i was wondering why it was so cheap when it was just out.
      Eventually I trusted my own research and bought it. The glow is a bit of a problem when i tested it in the dark, but i play in bright room most of the time.

    • @WCIIIReiniger
      @WCIIIReiniger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Steps The problem is, that it is difficult to determine if a monitor is good and when it is worth upgrading. It is easy to understand the difference between 60hz and 144 hz and 1080p to 1440p.
      But I have no idea when new monitors are better than my current one and by how much? If Tim would have tested it, I could simply compare the numbers with any new monitor that he is testing.
      I have an OLED C9 in my living room and I can clearly see a difference in colours, but I cannot measure the difference. At this point I probably stick with it, until I want to switch the resolution to ultrawide or 4k.
      Lastly if I would find out that there are better options for similar money I would try to sell my old one used and get a new one.

    • @WCIIIReiniger
      @WCIIIReiniger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Steps You do not get my point. Maybe I can tell the difference, but I am simply missing the physical access to all monitors out there. I do not have a monitor testing factory, in which I can check every monitor and stare at them for free. This is what reviews are for.
      For example when I bought this monitor I did not know Hardware Unboxed and I bought two different monitors. I compared them side by side and I went for the smaller and cheaper one (worse colours, but better response time and 100€ cheaper).
      I cannot order a new monitor every now and then and set it up to compare it one by one and send it back.
      That would be timeconsuming and a dick move for the reseller. Also I do not know for how much I can sell my old monitor at this point.
      I hope you understand my "problem" better now.

    If you are using the Dell S2721DGF, I highly recommend using the Super Fast mode. Extreme has significant overshoot for many users (more than showed here on avg) and can cause noticeable ghosting/Overshoot in games and even in web browsing. Games that struggle seem to be esport titles, like; Overwatch, APEX, Rocket League, Valorant etc. More demanding titles still have overshoot, but do not seem to cause the same noticeable ghosting while playing. However, to keep everything as smooth as possible (Frame-time/latency/ghosting/overshoot) super fast is the ideal setting.

    I have this monitor. One feature that doesn't get discussed much is its "ComfortView" option for when you aren't gaming. I get eye-strain looking at blazing white backgrounds with black text all day, so I usually enable dark mode whenever it's an option, with mixed results. The ComfortView setting isn't dark mode, but it achieves (for me) the desired effect of reducing eye-strain by muting the blue colors which are the main culprits in causing the eyestrain. The effect gives whites on the screen a kind of very muted rust color - not too much though, it still looks "white" - which is great when I'm reading web pages or running apps with otherwise blinding white backgrounds, but I don't want to turn the brightness down. The Dell Display Manager lets you turn this feature on or off on automatically on a per-program basis, so I have Edge (for example) and Excel, and MS Word with ComfortView on, and Chrome and most everything else at standard mode. It switches modes dynamically depending on which app currently has context.
    Oh yeah, and it's a great gaming monitor too.

    I'm finally researching a new monitor, and I have to say, I am absolutely underwhelmed with the industry. Every option is a massive tradeoff in price, image quality and speed. I haven't looked at monitors in 6 years, and really expected them to be further along for professionals. From my basic research, which is certainly incomplete, I don't understand why a 27" OLED with perfect contrast ~120Hz refresh and software correction for burn in, doesn't exist at around $750 or less. That LG 42" OLED slated for spring 2022 isn't going to cut it either. I really don't want to pay $4k for a reasonably accurate monitor. I could buy two massive beautiful TV's for that price and just sit 8ft away from them 😂😂

      I have heard that apparently the margin of profit in the monitor industry is a lot smaller than it is in the phone and tv market, which is why the market has been so slow to adopt expensive tech such as OLED and Mini LED. I guess you also have to remember that, for whatever reason, we the consumers have largely only cared about response time and refresh rate for a while now, taking "HDR Certified" to be good enough, so that is also what the manufacturers prioritize.
      It sucks, and I cannot tell if this is a good time to buy a monitor or not lol, like on one hand I want to wait to see if 4k OLED/Mini LED monitors are around the corner, but on the other hand it has been like 5 years since I upgraded my monitor and the only big change that has happened is 144hz IPS is a thing, which is cool, but like...dang the prices really haven't changed much either lol

    I picked up one of these about a year ago and fell in love with it. I've purchased and returned a few monitors since but Best buy occasionally has these on sale for $299 and I couldn't pass up buying another, then another today. All 3 had minimal backlight bleed, amazing speed and no blur. I don't use any gsync or anything as I run a 3080ti and am always over 165hz so I can't speak to that, but it's seems Dell took LGs panel and just did better with it in every way. the LG 27gp850? I bought went right back as it has bad light bleed, and all 3 Dells have none worth mentioning. I even bought the newer more expensive MSI mag274qrf-qd and I was not as impressed, yet it cost $150 more. The contrast wasn't better, although both were fine, but the Dell has better colors. Maybe I just enjoy the heavy saturation even if it's not accurate. I run on Extreme and I'm always blown away by how great this monitor is. We have a Samsung g7 I got on sale for 450($250 off) and It's very nice but the Dell has better colors and the Dell wins in motion blur as the G7 does have slight, buy not bothersome smearing and I prefer the flat Dell vs the ridiculous curve of the G7. Still the G7 is the only one I kept aside from the Dells. The Dell has very slim bezels which is a must for me in a triple monitor setup as I plan to install them on a sim racing rig. I had a gigabyte m27Q as well and it's definitely a step behind the Dell in every way that matters to me and really just didn't compare.

    This monitor has been the perfect blend of gaming and work productivity for me. I have it connected to a laptop docking station via HDMI for work and the S2721DGF 60hz response time makes for a smooth experience when switching back and forth from my desktop PC at 165hz over displayport. I had trouble getting this to work right with the ASUS TUF VG27AQL1A as the 60hz signal from the docking station would sometimes initiate at 59hz which the ASUS VG27AQL1A did not like and I would manually have to change it to 60hz. Not ideal. I experienced none of this with the S2721DGF. Smooth sailing from the get go.
    I also want to give a shout out to the convenient Display Manager software from DELL that works with the S2721DGF. It allows you to switch display modes form your desktop and also "auto" switch based on the application. For instance, I have mine setup to auto switch to FPS mode for Direct3D full-screen games and Standard mode for everything else. Once you have your modes calibrated the way you like via the monitors OSD, then the Display Manager can take over and cut down significantly the need to engage the OSD. I don't know about you, but the less I have to reach behind the monitor to fiddle with buttons the better!

      The legion y27q-20 (same panel) has an atrocious stand that sticks out over 11", with an ugly design theme of circle cutouts on the legion line up of 2020. The dell is only 8" deep. Possibly better panel QC as the monitor that I received is completely free of dead pixels, no backlight bleed, and very minimal glow. The monitor actually shows black with just the backlight on.

      @@Ben-ld1qi The dell. After using the dell for a little, the only gripe I have with it is the monitor is a little more shaky and sensitive to movements on your desk. My desk is on a carpet though so the desk could be shaking more than it should. But otherwise yeah, I have some IPS glow in the lower left corner but very minimal, I consider this a lottery winner so your monitor will likely differ. The lenovo is the same monitor, I just couldnt stand the stand, really ugly imo and the extra 3" it sticks out really takes up a lot of desk room, especially if you just have a 24" deep desk. I received 2 legion monitors, both which had imperfections and dead pixels/subpixels. Thankfully my first try with the dell was a winner.

      @@sleekismboyz605 honestly, 27" monitor on a stand is a bit close for only a 24 inch desk, I feel that my eyes are a little more strained as I have to move my eyes around more. 30 inch deep desk is ideal. The distance from the front edge of the desk to the monitor is about 18-20 inches, and having that extra 6" on a deeper desk would really help reduce eye strain. You could wall mount/arm mount the monitor and get some further clearance too.

    Just bought this today for $309 at best buy. They're on sale. Had a few 1440 144-180hz panels and returned em. Kept the m27Q, my son uses it. I'm using the s2721dgf. I didn't expect to like it so much but it's actually impressive. Backlight bleed is less than the m27Q on my model and I cannot measure contrast levels but my s2721dgf appears to have superior contrast to the m27Q. The Dell is just nicer all around. The gigabyte was only $259 and it's solid for that price & he's used it alot for many months now. I wasn't impressed with the m27Q but I found no major issues either, it's just ok. My son's happy with it and his 3060ti Ftw3 has no issues with 1440/180hz. That's another thing, the gigabyte is 180 vs 165hz on the Dell. That's minor but the gigabyte cost $50 less. The Dell wins in every other way, seems faster, image has more pop/depth, stand/appearance is nicer. Both are good and cheap, should be good monitors for a couple years

The Dell isn't in its extreme mode in sRGB unfortuntely, it's a big drawback. I still dont understand why manufacturers lock the response time mode in sRGB...

Got it for 370€ and I really love it. It also suprised me that it actually has 4 USB 3.0 ports, two with the DP and HDMI and two right at the front on the left. Plugged my keyboard and mouse dongle in there, works great!
    You can also easily turn the LED strip of via the OSD (on screen display). Just don't forget to set your Windows screen settings to the actual refresh rate, you will notice if you done it right, it will be buttery smooth even just scrolling websites.
    Such an improvement over my 24" 1080p 60 Hz monitor before. I just wish there was a 27" 1080p version available too, to replace my other monitor and be able to wall mount them nicely together, now I gotta find something else. This is an excellent monitor. It's not perfect, but damn near. I've had it for 5 months, and it's been good to me. This is the type of monitor to get if you want texture over FPS. I run everything at max setting in 1440p. Most games I get about 150fps or more so this is a match for a 3070 with a 5800x. If you want to esport. Do not buy this. Get a 1080p monitor with 240hz .5 response time. This monitor is for those who play RPG, casual shooters, or racing games. But games like valorant, COD, apex and you want every frame. Don't get this.

      @Froy the 1080p 240hz version of this monitor. 1080p is the resolution to go for competitive gaming. 1440p if you're playing mmo or large scale maps unless you got a 3080ti you can competitive play on 1440p. I think this monitor for 1080p 240hz is like 250 bucks. Paired with a 3060ti you can get 200fps or more on games like fortnite or warzone or other first person shooters.

    had this monitor for a couple of weeks now. I can confirm everything in this review. I too am a bit disappointed with uniformity, it's even slightly worse than my 7 years old dell u2414h and there are, in fact, some issues around the edges. I'm still not sure if it's worth sending it back. I think backlight bleed and ips glow are acceptable in my case (here too, slightly worse than my old dell), but I never use it in a dark room, and neither should you, it's bad for your eyes.
    Overall it's a very good monitor as the review said, I can live with the average contrast, I would like better uniformity though.

      @SerFezz to be more precise, it's not really that uniformity is bad, it's just that the shadows that screen borders cast on the panel are slightly more noticeable than the monitors I'm used to. The issue is worsened by the fact that this monitor is bigger than my previous 24", so the angle towards the edges is steeper. It's nothing serious, but it's a bit annoying. I've owned this monitor for about 8 months and love it, I think it's an amazing monitor for the price considering I got it for ~$450USD winter 2021. Here's my favorite settings and tips for the S2721DGF in video and games:
    Smart HDR - DisplayHDR. Make sure to enable HDR in Windows Settings and adjust the HDR-SDR balance setting between 10-50, mine is at 25.
    Sharpness - 70 adjust to taste.
    Contrast - 100% (Lower the contrast to taste when your game/video is too bright.)
    Brightness - 90% (Only does anything for SDR content, doesnt affect HDR. Adjust to taste and leave it alone, use contrast setting when adjusting brightness on the fly.)
    Response Time - Super Fast, almost all the time. ('Fast' if game fps250 without synced frame rate) If you get overshoot/your mouse feels weird in a game adjust this setting.
    FreeSync - Enabled. Nvidia GPU users: Manually enable GSync in [Nvidia Control Panel->Manage 3D settings->Monitor Technology->G-SYNC Compatible].
    Preset Modes - Custom Color. Gain [R98 G94 B96], Offset [R50 G48 B48], Hue [default], Saturation [default]. Ideal settings vary a bit monitor-to-monitor and based on your eyes, so adjust with a color chart image. I borrowed calibrated color settings from a good written review and adjusted 1-2% to my taste.
    Dark Stabilizer - Extremely useful control for increasing dark clarity, especially in fast moving pictures. I use it often. In most games I turn this up to 2 or 3, for video usually 0 or 1. This is the first control I adjust when the image seems a bit off.
    165 Hz tip - You need to use DisplayPort to reach 165 Hz. If you use HDMI it can't go higher than 144 Hz. This is normal for all 1440p monitors afaik.
    So yeah there's all of my tips, I hope you get good performance out of this monitor! This thing is a beast for FPS games but you gotta learn for yourself what the settings do. My only gripes with this monitor is that the default color was a bit green-orangey and the dark levels in video media sometimes need the Dark Stabilizer. Credit to Dell for providing very useful settings to overcome the weaknesses of this high performance, affordable 1440p 165hz display. The only settings I adjust on the fly are Dark Stabilizer and Contrast. Some people disable Smart HDR entirely because Windows 10 HDR support is a bit jank, but with these settings I use DisplayHDR mode for everything. I think I've included all the info needed to enjoy this monitor to the fullest. Oh yeah, thank you video creator, your review helped convince me to buy this monitor last year :)

      @@unskeptable Vibrant colors doesn't mean accurate colors. Nano-IPS uses wider DCI-P3 color space, the standard is sRGB. If you measure color accuracy in DCI-P3 color space then yes it's accurate but it oversaturates sRGB colors and almost everything is designed on sRGB displays for sRGB color space. sRGB is for SDR and DCI-P3 is for HDR. Wide gamut displays usually have sRGB modes that clamp the gamut to sRGB and 27GL850 also has it but this monitor doesn't. But even if you use it there's something wrong with the red phosphor that makes red color still too vibrant and it causes eye strain in some people.

    - Contrast is definitely less on the dell compared to the m27q which is kind of a bummer
    - Backlight bleed is MUCH BETTER, my m27q has some really bright spots on all corners and makes watching any kind of content with black bars annoying
    - the 165 HZ refresh rate on the Dell vs the 170 HZ on the m27q is indistinguishable
    - Build quality is slightly better on the Dell but they're both great in that aspect. I definitely like the design of the Dell's stand because its much smaller but thats because I have a pretty tiny desk
    - the Dell doesn't have any crosshairs or extra gamer features like the m27q but its black equalizer or what Dell calls dark stabilizer is much better on the S2721DGF. Having a feature like that in games like Tarkov where it can get really dark helps a ton.
    overall I'm going to go with the Dell and return the m27q. fingers crossed the backlight bleed doesn't worsen. that's really the only reason I'm going with the Dell as the m27q is just as good of a monitor and is usually cheaper

      Gigabyte has terrible quality control and those monitors take a shxt after a few months with issues. You're lucky if you got a good one.

    What monitor companies don't understand apparently is that because of your reviews we the people are very high likely of buying the reviewed monitor. I am going to buy this Dell S2721DGF, because of this good review and recommendation. If this review didn't exist I'd probably go with some other monitor I was planning on getting.

    Nice review, as always. Well done.
    Would love to see a comparison of this Dell S2721DGF, LG 27GL850 and the Omen by HP 27i monitors.
    All 3 use the same nanoIPS panel from LG but they all have different performance results and build quality.
