I think it also comes down to black coloring and speed. In the games I play there are a lot.of darks. It's important to see a player in dark setting and if it's washed it's harder to differentiate. I love these monitor reviews. I think it would be great if you did a lot more of them and started including gaming televisions like the LG's to compare them with gaming monitors. Gaming monitors are stagnating pretty hard and a lot of people are starting to look at the televisions because of it.
@@janmichaelsuarez2996 I stick to my choice. Still totally happy with my choice on the long term. Won't look for a monitor for at least 2 years till I upgrade if necessary.

I’m surprised to see this channels review conflicting with Rting website review (which are the best in the industry in my opinion). RTING has this listed as all around better than the LG850B model. You commented on HDR gaming not being great although Rting mentioned this is one of the best 1440p IPS 144/165hz monitors they have reviewed. I would love to learn why that is. They provide their testing methodology but I don’t see that explanation here.
Yes I think people rate the LG better because of maintaining FPS over 100, with the new GPUs, I think this will be better then the LG, higher refresh rate, ELMB, BFI, and better contrast.
@@Hecbertgg it's fantastic. With elmb sync with gsync, the motion is crisp! I don't notice any flicker and it's pretty colour accurate. My only gripe is that it's not a perfect panel so IPS glow is something I noticed in dark loading screens. Unnoticeable in normal use. The HDR is a bit meh and just a gimmick Overall, a high performance screen at an entry-level price. If you want a better panel with less glow and more features and ports, the you buy the strix/rig range.
@@Hecbertgg :( sorry to hear. Perhaps you have a problem with the monitor? Or is the VA panel known to have ghosting? With elmb sync, there is going to be a lot of overshoot. Without it, trace free 80 will have motion blur but there shouldn't be that much ghosting unless you are looking for it.
I bought one last year and I now I'm replacing it with a BenQ EX2510 because I was a bit too optimistic and overlooked that parameter at 6:05. If your computer is capable of 1440P and 144FPS at all times then this monitor is amazing. If you can't and settle on 1440P 60Hz then it feels off and sluggish, as explained in the video. And settling for 1080P just look bad, much worth than a native 1080P monitor. All of this be obvious for some of you but it wasn't for me. My GTX 1080 is far from being enough to run this monitor smoothly. So in conclusion, this is a somewhat affordable monitor but it requires nothing less than a beast of a computer, it's not a good all-rounder.
*The LG 27GL83A-B* REALLY needs to be talked about when being value. It's a $380 version of the $500 27GL850 (without wide gamut and fake hdr)and it's NEVER mentioned here lol
It also lacks a nano IPS screen (just IPS), so I’d imagine response times to be worse. But if you’re shorter on cash, it does seem to be a good option.
As an owner of this monitor myself I have noticed one other drawback which is mostly noticable in a multi monitor setup. When the screen is turned off it disconnects the displayport cable as well causing some noticable flickering / delay every time the system wakes up from sleep.
I agree and they also forgot to test for g-sync compatibility actual game play as well they didn't test 160 and 155 HZ like they can definitely show a lot more
o lo because it's a feature people care about, and if they dont, it's cause they haven't seen it in action. The photos here show that there can be artifacts, but its the lclosest we get to the response time of CRTs, getting a sharp instead of blurry image. All those response time numbers all change when back light strobing is on, so it's relevant to test for every monitor that supports it
@@wile123456 agreed that's a huge selling point on this monitor also current and new video cards and most games you can hit above 100 FPS so obviously this monitor is better the higher you go
I tried BenQ implementation of Motion Blur Reduction (DyAc) and the difference is night and day, I absolutely love it It's a shame they didn't test MBR for this monitor, being QHD + IPS I'd love to try it myself
I had this monitor .the both are not working in sync with each other like they should .they still need to work on it. I like the monitor but unfortunately being so blurry I had to send it back. Eye strain and headaches.having the monitor properly spaced from me,when you're looking out at the distance at your enemies when playing FPS and all you see his little blurry objects moving across the screen. I really hope they fix this that was the deal-breaker for me
Hey hey. I bought this monitor last week. I was highly disappointed with it when I started using it, but it then grew on me. Having lots of motion issues though. Moving the mouse around quickly and you see about 10 pointers. Might be exaggerating. But when moving fast in game, so pillars and stuff replicate many times. Colour is absolutely stunning. Since moving from 1080p to 1440p Final Fantasy XIV I’ve gone from about 120/130fps I’ve dropped to about 90fps I’m sure that’s fine.
Weird, I have this monitor and used it for a year now with no issues and nothing like you speak of. I did find it ran really great at 144hz. The blooming on dark screens sucks but to be expected sadly
It would be great if with the graphs we could also get a visual example of what those numbers mean. Even though arguing that the numbers are worse, the actual visual artifacts may or may not be as bad as I believe it might be a much more subjective thing. Having visualizations of these artifacts allows people to decide by themselves and helps us better understand what those numbers translate to in practice. Nice review.
I agree. Because it's funny if you go read customer reviews on several monitors you'll see very happy customers. I hadn't really watched this yet but I wonder how the colors compare to the LG nano's and gigabytes. Also I never see these guys review the more budget monitors like sceptre, viotek, or koowiu.

They use the TUF brand to give a appearance of value, its a trash brand, it means absolutely nothing, they just slap it on stuff and put some yellow on it.
I always watch your monitor reviews before I get one. Can you guys also review the newer model of this monitor which is the Asus TUF VG27AQL1? Thanks for the great reviews
Thanks for this review! Been waiting for this one from you guys. I was deciding between the VG27AQ and the PG278QR last month, since the PG was discounted to almost the same price as the VG. But reading some reviews in articles, I had to go with the PG, since it has fast response times, no ghosting and g-sync. Your review further supports my decision, thanks!
But this has Gsync compatibility. What's the difference? Also isn't PG278QR TN? I have the PG278Q. Gsync 144hz 1ms 1440p TN panel. Don't know what's the difference between than and QR.
@@SlayerSeraph The QR is a slightly better refresh of the Q, offers 100% srgb coverage & more inputs. That's really about it. A good monitor nonetheless & I'm very happy with mine.
I mostly preferred the better response times over anything really. Im picky when it comes to it because I can definitely tell the difference. Thats why I didnt go with the IPS varient or the VG. And for a TN, it has great colours imo. It was basically the same price. Whether or not there's any difference between gsync and gsync comp, this one had the actual module so oh well
@@skigz5360 Theoretically Freesync can be worse then G-sync, however when freesync is validated by Nvidia for the G-sync compatible sticker both implementations should be on par with each other. Other then that these TN's do indeed look good.
I can't find it anywhere. I have no idea what monitor to buy next, coming from Asus RoG Swift PG278Q 1ms 144hz 1440p Gsync TN panel. And wants a serious upgrade. All these models from asus, ViewSonic, aoc abd lg are super hard to find , an their namings and specs are super confusing and misleading.
Personally I was having hard time choosing what to buy, but in the end went with VG27AQ. Other options were FI27Q-P and 27GL850. The main feature which won me over was ELMB sync. The unfortunate thing is I didn't get to see monitors side by side, as often buyers won't get such a chance. But have to say, ELMB sync is pretty awesome, the clarity in fast paced games is so game changing and I'd dare to say edge giving in certain situations. I truly hope other manufacturers try implement similar technology to their panels as well. But Asus could have ditched the speakers out of the display, they are abysmal and complete waste of effort for their part. Didn't buy the monitor for those and didn't even realize it had those, so there you go. What also would be lovely if there would be more customization for the buttons. I'd rather program those three for 3 different profiles for my liking or at least one button so I could cycle my preferences. Otherwise I have no problem recommending this monitor.
Me too I am between this one and 27gl850. I kinda want The LG before this since It Will get me a smooth handling between VRR and i dont know If BLS Will be to my liking, though its obvious that The moving image has a much sharper alien (despite its artifacts and image darkening) on vg27aq Plus this one gets better contrast. Still i would get myself a VA pannel for single player games and whichever one of these to play competitive games
@Hardware Unboxed I'd love to see a review of the newer Asus VG27AQL1A, now with the V-shaped stand, 170hz, USB 3.0 w/ passthrough and "better(?)", updated ELMB Sync. I am starting to see a few Filipino reviewers review it, and based on those it makes me wonder why I haven't seen more reviews. I mean you'd need to check it out with each combination of ELMB, Adaptive, and V-Sync on/off in-game to get a full picture but the monitor seems solid to me, although I think there will be a difference in performance for certain sync features paired with a mid-range GPU compared to a top-range GPU. Rather specifically, difference in performance when optimal frames *aren't* being achieved with various features on/off, compared to when optimal frames *are* being achieved with various features on/off.
Ended up getting a new not renewed model. Monitors great so far had for 2 days ofc it's not perfect and there is that yellow/orange bleed on the bottom left corner of the panel. But besides that panel seems great coming from a 60hz so this seem like. Bigg upgrade to me that is well worth it, besides the light bleeding, not worth returning just for that I will have to deal w/it' Speakers are not worth reviewing why even add them? 4/5 8/10 Good colors/blacks better than my LG which was also an IPS panel. But that panel didn't suffer from yellow light bleed but my new monitor does.
And according to the sticker on the back of the monitor/panel this montior was made April 2020. So it's pretty new but still has glow problem only noticable in dark scenes I imagine if you play a lot of dark scene scary games or watch a movie with a lot of dark scenes it's becomes increasingly obvious which might annoy some ppl seeing as paid over 400 and this is something you would be using for the next couple of years. What do y'all think is it worth keeping or should I try to return?
I was really excited for this monitor. Got it today and has the 2 dead pixels in the upper left corner. lower corners have a bit worse ips glow than i would have liked. A bit disappointed.
Excellent review as always!! Fantastic review. The ELMB+VRefresh is a big improvement. Too bad about the slow refresh and/or overshoot. The LG34GK950f is still king and worth 2X the price for those spending a lot of time at the screen, imo.
Great review as always Tim! Could you review the AOC AG273QX in the near future as this is pretty much the only non-curved 27 inch 1440p 144 Hz Freesync VA monitor available in the Netherlands at the moment? So far I'm impressed by it's design and specs so I wonder how it matches up in your tests.
Seems like every IPS/VA monitor has issues, i'm keeping my dell S2716DG for now, perfect motion handling from 60 to 144hz, i've tested an IPS AOC 24G2 and a VA XG32VQ and both of them don't come near close to the Dell in terms of motion clarity, it's not worth ditching TN if you are a gamer.
I think this channel produces the best monitor reviews. After watching these monitor reviews, I am ready to make an informed purchase decision which is something I cannot say for most other monitor review channels
Yes, but i would recommend the lg monitor as with the series x u will never go up to the 165hz so the 144 of the lg wouldnt be a bad thing, and it is better in almost every other way
I bought this monitor for series x also, I think it will do just fine. I didn't watch this til after purchase or I'd have bought the LG 🤣. Owell I'm just pumped for cod at 120
This is great thanks! Would you be able to review the VG27WQ as well? There are very few reviews out there but it seems like a great option, maybe slightly edging out the AQ even.
I'm alright with my Samsung C32HG70, if you find one at a good price, it's really a sweet monitor even 2 years after (1440p 144 hz VA panel, pretty good HDR)
i got mine last year. i have had a few problems with it but when i swaped to my radeon 7 the artifacts that i got using freesync where gone. i wish HDR where for all games and that it had HDR10 or better.
@@mercurio822 HDR10 is nothing special since it just means being capable to interpret a HDR signal, nothing about actually displaying it properly, for that we have the VESA HDR 400/600/1000 spec.
I've gone through two of these monitors. The first one was nearly perfect with little IPS glow and no backlight bleed. But, it had an inverted pixel in the upper lefthand corner. The second one I bought has worse glow and backlight bleed. I just purchased a pixio px7 prime and am awaiting its arrival from Amazon.
I was torn between the Asus and the Pixio Prime. I went with the Asus and have bleed in the lower left and lower right. Still trying to figure out if it is bleed or "IPS Glow". I'd be interested in hearing how you like the Pixio compared to the Asus.
Does anyone know when he was talking about the monitor not performing as well at lower framerates could anyone put this into perspective for someone coming from a bog standard 1080p 60fps monitor. Like If I got this monitor and on some games I was only hitting say like 60-80fps would I really notice much or is it more for people used to high end monitors. As I was thinking of getting this one but I think like fairly often my system would only hit around 60-80fps on most games on ultra 1440p and then higher on others so I get get the high refresh rate benefit... Basically if my system might be running games at 60-80fps most of the time should I not get this one?
HI.. when i install this monitor, my max refresh rate is only 120hz on the Nvidia control panel AFTER enabling overclock on the monitor OSD. How to make it 144hz or 165hz?
Just got the updated version of this monitor, the VG27AQA1A. It has AMD Freesync premium which I wanted for my new AMD graphic card. Coming from a 60Hz 24" 1080p monitor I couldn't be more happier. I got it at 229€ brand new. Amazing monitor for the price and what a difference in gaming.
@@thorngriffith9132 I couldn't find the model in this video anywhere in my country, not sure if it's because it's a 4 yo monitor. Could only find the VG27AQA1A which came out last year and yes it's VA. But this VA panel is excellent, great contrast ratio, the blacks are deep and there's no smearing. The older model has Nvidia Gsync, mine is AMD Freesync premium, new design with slim bezels, goes up until 170Hz. I don't mind not having height adjustment either as my desk is already high and the monitor sits perfectly for me, otherwise nothing adding a couple books beneath wouldn't solve.
So you come off quite bit harder on this monitor than RTings, which rather strongly recommends this monitor as the purchase for 27 1440p and considers it somewhat better than the LG 27GL850-B. Any venture as to why this is? A lot of your criticism seems to hinge on it's lesser performance at 60hz, but I'm trying to figure out: what would I even need to use 60hz for with this monitor? Just trying to understand because I was all set to buy this monitor until I saw this video.
If he does that, OLED will be far far ahead in all charts, and people will start asking questions like why are there no 24/27/29/32/34 inch OLED gaming monitors still after so many years, or why are these outdated TN/IPS/VA panels still going for $400+, and even $1000 when they're already technologically obsolete. The panel cartel will be furious with anyone who starts showing that their gig is up, and that will include Tim. So shut up about OLEDs peasant, know your place and stop asking about stuff you're not supposed to be buying yet.
Have a look at Rtings's review of the LG C9: www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/c9-oled To see their comment on how it is as a monitor, hover your mouse over the "PC Monitor" portion under "Our Verdict" near the beginning of the page.
an LG C9 OLED is very, very good as a tv Monitor and has far superior picture quality to any PC-Monitor! It also supports 1440p resolution with 120hz, if your card can not drive 4k with high fps. with new cards supporting HDMI 2.1 (or consoles), you will be able to drive 4k@120Hz on an LGC9. the latency is very low, makes this good for gaming. The "problem" of burn in is over represented by those, who can not produce OLED and who want to sell produkts that are bad (like TN, IPS and VMA). It is not a problem at all. you can easily further reduce any chance of burn in by using dark themes for the desktop and selecting a dark screensaver or stand by with low time setting (like 5 Min or so). also reduce the brightness prevents any bur in. the only real problem is that it is BIG. if you are sitting very near in front of it, it can be a a little to big for some people.
OLED screens suffer from the "Burn in" effect like Plasma TVs did in the past. Static PC Screen usage with many bright never changing pixels on screen is especially harmful! This of course, could easily be negated by the manufacturers by simply including either a Software or Hardware solution. That activates a Screensaver function over bright pixels that are lit over a certain amount of time. Think of it this way. At the bottom of your Desktop is the Task bar. After a certain use time, the taskbar alone starts changing colors, like a rainbow wave. It would look like those crazy RGB keyboards if you seen one of those. That would bring movement into the crystals of the screen. And the Taskbar at the bottom would not burn in. A krude, but shockingly effective solution.

I just bought this a few weeks ago and I love it! I did the UFO ghosting test with ELMB test and I was shocked at the difference. The colors are poor out of the box so you'll need to adjust that, but I'm getting way better specs than all my friends I paid $150-300 less than they did.

They provide their testing methodology but I don’t see that explanation here.
rting definitely commented on its lackluster hdr colors
@Chenath Wanniarachchi with the new 30 rtx cards and dssl 2.0 i think 165hz 1440p is now very achievable with less budget
Yes I think people rate the LG better because of maintaining FPS over 100, with the new GPUs, I think this will be better then the LG, higher refresh rate, ELMB, BFI, and better contrast.

@@Pepingco how good is it?
@@Hecbertgg it's fantastic. With elmb sync with gsync, the motion is crisp! I don't notice any flicker and it's pretty colour accurate.
My only gripe is that it's not a perfect panel so IPS glow is something I noticed in dark loading screens. Unnoticeable in normal use.
The HDR is a bit meh and just a gimmick
Overall, a high performance screen at an entry-level price. If you want a better panel with less glow and more features and ports, the you buy the strix/rig range.
@@Pepingco 2 weeks ago I bought the same version but with VA and curved, TUF VG27WQ, but it has a lot of ghosting and i don't know what to buy now
@@Hecbertgg :( sorry to hear.
I have a i7-10700 , RTX 2060 6GB, you think I can run this monitor ?
*The LG 27GL83A-B*
REALLY needs to be talked about when being value.

Been rocking this monitor for 3 years its been great, but finally looking to upgrade to the Gen2 OLED when it starts arriving.
Please stop skipping over backlight strobing with other reviews, it's sorely lacking from your otherwise completly in depth reviews
I agree and they also forgot to test for g-sync compatibility actual game play as well they didn't test 160 and 155 HZ like they can definitely show a lot more
why?
o lo because it's a feature people care about, and if they dont, it's cause they haven't seen it in action.

It would be great if with the graphs we could also get a visual example of what those numbers mean.
Me too
I am between this one and 27gl850. I kinda want The LG before this since It Will get me a smooth handling between VRR and i dont know If BLS Will be to my liking, though its obvious that The moving image has a much sharper alien (despite its artifacts and image darkening) on vg27aq
Plus this one gets better contrast. Still i would get myself a VA pannel for single player games and whichever one of these to play competitive games
thanks for your comment, I'm planning on buying this monitor and the speakers/ ELMB sync is all I wanted to confirm on.

Monitors great so far had for 2 days ofc it's not perfect and there is that yellow/orange bleed on the bottom left corner of the panel.

Speakers are not worth reviewing why even add them?
4/5
8/10
Good colors/blacks better than my LG which was also an IPS panel.

Have a look at Rtings's review of the LG C9: www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/c9-oled
To see their comment on how it is as a monitor, hover your mouse over the "PC Monitor" portion under "Our Verdict" near the beginning of the page.
an LG C9 OLED is very, very good as a tv Monitor and has far superior picture quality to any PC-Monitor!
@@filipealves6602 but I want it tho 😔
Someday I would like to see you review the AOC 24G2U, but I know that availability can be a serious problem. Even here it's difficult to find one. I hope you can review it one day. Very good work guys, keep going, I only trust you in monitor reviews.
PD: I've already got this monitor one month ago. For what I was looking for in terms of panel-type, inches, Hertz with full Freesync and resolution it was perfect for me, and there wasn't really other options here in Spain
can I turn on both overdrive mode and ELMB Sync (backlight strobing and Free Sync) the same time?
Yes
Outstanding review, thank you so much!
