David in 2018 I did this very route, and being the curious traveler I was, I did a little desvio like yourself and I just remember from the moment I was traveling in those very alleyways en el barrio, that I wanted to travel and live from traveling. Medellin and Comuna 13 alone with Costa Rica were two major inspirations in my life choices and seeing this video brings me back.. Thanks for the video and a huge shoutout to the hard working Colombians who DO care about their tourism and promoting real and responsible tourism

David that was a great tour and much safer that you went with someone from the neighborhood. I love the people there they are so warm and inviting. We just booked our flight for two weeks in May. I will definitely reach out to them for a tour and I will mention I saw it on your channel. Thanks David great video!

David, thank you!!! What I like is that you are showing the great people who actually live there. I am going back soon. I have been there a couple of times last year. A lot changed in the last year. I will leave it at that. I was blessed to travel there to meet a friend and meet their family the first trip. I would not recommend going, if you just want to be a normal gringo. I wish the bad gringos would stop going. You can tell if they are good or bad on the flight back based on what they are talking about. But I keep going back because, if you go for the right reasons, find a local that will help keep you safe. It is amazing!!! Please do not go there to give us a bad reputation. David does a great job of showing the real situation. It is not easy for the people who live there respect them, they will respect you. Thank you!!!

Great video. I wish more people would do video tours like this in more areas of Colombia. I have really enjoyed your channel and I'm sad you have left Colombia as I really have no interest in Europe. Wish you the best, thanks for what you contributed on your channel about Colombia. I will watch you again if you return.

Excellent video !!! Thanks for taking your viewers along. Your friend or guide mentioned the police rarely go there. I was there in 2019 and there were few police. However, when we came back down from there there were Military people lining the streets all in body armor, helmets and automatic weapons. I figured obviously someone very important was coming. Later we saw a 4x4 pickup truck with a passenger in back. It was also escorted with motorcycles. It was very interesting to see that.

I’m Colombian but been living in the states for 21 years; now I’m foreseen owning property in Colombia in the maybe near future. I have family in Medellin and my mom lives in Loma de los Bernal, but for some crazy reason you explain things so much better than they do.

I got a little different explanation about why there's no police presence in Comuna 13 that makes more sense. First, the area is divided up and controlled by various gangs. Second, the gangs have an agreement with police for them to keep out. During the day a least I felt very safe there... definitely I get the sense that tourism is a huge business there and the gangs want to protect their clients.

I got caught in the middle of a shooting there on a Monday at 3pm while doing a tour with my family. After the shooting some of the locals were breaking down the politics to me of how comuna 13 run (I speak Spanish) I’ll leave it at that

I would love to visit Columbia... It looks very interesting and people seem chill. Problem is... As of late, tourists seem to be getting kidnapped left and right, ransomed as well as some never making it back home. As a white dude, I don't think I would do well over there if all that is becoming a norm, which is a real bummer. Maybe, I got it all wrong. David... What's the deal with all that? You know... You live there.
