  • Dating in Colombia can be risky and dangerous for people who don't know better. Trying to find a Colombian girlfriend without understanding the culture and looking in the wrong places have ended many men's lives, unfortunately. Let's ask local Colombian men their opinion on this topic.

    Lots of victim blaming in Colombia and I get it. We can only watch our own backs and do what's necessary to minimize our risk. Let's not forget though that there are many cases where foreigners (and locals alike) were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people. I've heard cases of foreign dudes thinking they're making local friends and they get scoped and wake up without a kidney. I don't think it's fair to say all victims should've known better.

      Exactly why the criminality keeps growing and is getting worse from simple muggings to kidnappings and now we’re seeing murders !! Colombians just write it off to it being the foreigner/tourists fault and so the police are indifferent !!

    😂😂😂
    Bro, that has to be one of the most absurd statements I’ve heard about Colombia. Respectfully!!
    I’m from Miami, and I’ve dealt with countless Colombians and Venezuelans. Personally speaking, they’re some of the fakest people I’ve met, and I’ve met a lot.
    On the other hand, Haitians and Jamaicans (Black Caribbean folks) keep it real to the fullest. Russians too. I never met a Russian that faked a smile Lol and a lot of them were cutthroat and not friendly.
    Back to the topic though, men going abroad looking for women gotta be careful. Not only in Colombia, but anywhere.
    Tourists in other countries, be advised, you’re the prime targets out there. A Colombian robbing a local probably won’t get much as opposed to a foreigner that probably has money and other valuables.
    If I go to Colombia, I’d go in a group of at least 5 people, and even then there’s still no guarantee of safety. Stay alert. Happy new year.

  • @social5g
    @social5g 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    Yeah, I lived in Medellin for 5 years after having visited at least 20 times. I already speak Spanish fluently, having taken Spanish in school as it was required and I always dated Latina's in the states. Anyways, lived in Provenza in the best part of town, and one day I let my guard down and that's when I got robbed and stabbed. Luckily, I made it to the hospital in time before I bled out, so I was lucky to be alive. But it gets worse, when it was time to get discharged , the hospital administrator was going to have me arrested because I didn't have money to pay my bill (I had just been robbed of everything!!). Luckily the attending ER doctor was nice enough to pay my bill when the police showed up to take me to jail (for not being able to pay my hospital bill after I just got away with my life), and I went back the next day and paid him back.
    The moral of the story is that there is a HATE for foreigners (extranjeros) that did not exist when I first started going there back in 2014. Sure people will smile and want to be your friend, because if you are a good person with a good personality, that is attractive to people now matter where you go. But the tourism and the way it has affected the local population has created a resentment that will come back to bite you in the ass when you least expect it. I will be selling my place in Medellin this year because between the Velezanos and Colombians that work as gangs, they waited to strike when I least expected it. Ask Colombians about how they feel even about the huge influx of Velezanos, they are not happy about what that has done to the country the last seven years.
    This poor guy in the video who just bought a place and is wearing rose colored lenses, be careful man. You seem too trusting and naive, this is not Texas or Hawaii! Keep a low profile, maybe rent your place out so you have the real estate ownership marker down (which is how I'm sure you got a R type Visa, which is what I did, so that's how I know). Rent short term and move around, that is how a foreigner has to operate in Medellin, as eventually something will happen. And it's only going to get worse.
    YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A FOREIGNER IN ANY COUNTRY YOU ARE NOT FROM, and with that comes racism and resentment. Don't shoot the messenger.........
    Good luck to all!

    • @Iamjonlopez
      @Iamjonlopez 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Many westerners are shocked when they find out that medical care is paid for on the spot in most of latam. If you have insurance they figure out how much the insurance will pay and what you're going to pay out of pocket right then and there. Being in a nice part of town means you went to an upscale hospital so the bill was a lot higher. In fact, in some places in latam they even refuse to care for locals if they don't have insurance or if they don't pay first (for example if you go in with a gunshot wound where you can die and the clinic be left holding the bag) so you were probably taken care of because you were a gringo in the first place.

    David, you are not fear mongering. The truth is there's a lot of lonely men in the United States, and they don't know where else to go due to the lack of quality women in America. Bottom line, if you're looking for girls, there are certainly safer countries to try than Colombia. I think the reason this continues to be a point of contention is that Colombian women are known for being exceptionally pretty, and the prepagos are known for having exceptionally low prices. I place more blame on the lack of respectable women in the United States, than I do on a bunch of naturally horny men. My two cents, for what it's worth. Dude great video idea, but I have to say I was severely let down by this one. Why? Because you only interviewed 2 guys and one was an old fart.
    I had a feeling it was gonna be like this with the video being only 8 minutes long but come on man. You could've at least got 6 guys in that barber shop, hung around there alone, and got who knows how many other interviews?
    I already know what's up with the dating dangers there, but for the others to get it through their thick skulls you needed to reinforce the opinions of the locals with 10 or 20 short quick interviews. Only interviewing 2 guys isn't getting it done. You needed to show a lot more.
    And don't make the excuse of I don't want to spend a lot of time editing because I only have so much time before I go back to Mexico and I want to spend as much time as I can with Natty and family/friends. We don't need fancy editing, me and everyone else we don't watch your channel for fancy edits.
    And finally, here's an idea, how about interviewing the "normal" lady down there on this topic? By normal I'm talking about a lady with a job, which isn't a job being a lady of the night. Let's go straight to the source and hear it once and for all from the women what they think about all of this. And from more than 2 please. Did you not notice the woman staring at you at the clothing store while you were interviewing those two randoms? She had a look on her face that clearly said, "hey over here, I have a lot to say on this subject, ask me."

      And another thing, how typical of a Colombian to always first be victim blaming. Sorry, I don't care how naive someone is before they go down there and try and get on some app for a date, they absolutely do not deserve to die. Name another city/country where this (people dying)is so prevalent as in Medellin, Colombia? You would be hard pressed to find one. It's ridiculous the "no dar papaya" don't give papaya mentality. It's as ridiculous as the Asian "saving face" mentality. I understand why it exists, but I don't have to agree with it. It's childish and extremely short sighted. With that kind of thinking, the real true problems never get addressed and so, here we are.
      Another thing a video like this can lead into is a discussion on the CORRUPTION down there. Corruption in the police department, politics, etc.

      What many foreigners don't understand is how much crime has skyrocketed since the pandemic and the influx of 3 million mostly very poor Venezuelans.
      Venezuelan girls are gorgeous also and they can easily trick some sex repressed dude into dropping his guard. This is why these types of crimes are gaining popularity. Not to say there aren't Colombians doing some of them but many are done by girls working for Venezuelan gangs which are notorious for the sheer violence they perpetuate.
      Ask any Peruvian, Ecuadorian or Chilean and they will testify to what I'm saying. In a country of 50 million people, three million is a HUGE number. That's 6% added to it's population in only a few years!

    I have been going to Colombia for more than a decade and have been hearing stories like this since 2009. It has always been a thing. It is really sad. I'm disappointed in Colombian people's attitudes and beliefs about it. They place complete and total blame on the victim, and immediately draw potentially wrong conclusions about the victim. Some of them go as far to even place the blame completely on Venezuelans like the old man did in the video ( lol). I have heard of numerous stories about foreigners who simply thought they were dating normal women (not prostitutes), and did 0 drugs, who were drugged, viciously beaten, and in some cases even sexually assaulted before being killed. Instead of sweeping it under the rug and victim blaming (or being xenophobic), they should face it head on, bring even more awareness to it, and put pressure on the local political and police system to crack down on these low life gangs that are preying on innocent tourists. I am sorry, nobody deserves that. Even if they WERE looking for prostitutes or drugs, they STILL don't deserve to be drugged and killed! Two wrongs don't make a right. Also, to a certain degree, aren't Colombian people kind of resposible for the destintion being known for prostitution? Clean it up!! It's their responsibility, but they refuse to take it. Guess what? Before gringos used to come to Colombia, who was buying the prostitutes? lol. Common sense. The Colombian guys, and they still do! Believe me. It is very common. Nobody seems to mention that. We are made to believe that only foreginers buy prostiututes and Colombian men are saints. Yeah right.

    If those two men are representative of general Colombian opinion, then there's no real sympathy for tourists who become drugged and robbed because picking up girls in bars and taking them to your room is "not part of the culture." This in turn means that there's no political pressure to crack down on the crime. This could explain why there are no sting operations. Personally, I'm not one to pick up women in a bar for sex. But for some reason, I still do not feel like Colombia is safe enough for me to visit. I consider myself a friendly and chatty person. Who's to say that a merely friendly and chatty person cannot be targeted? I'd prefer to be in a place where I'm much more relaxed. 😊

    Regarding "fear mongering," I follow a lot of channels and frankly am seeing little of that. What I do see is a whole lot of people who think they are too smart to get got, and that's troubling. The girls are starting to play the long game, so knowing them beforehand doesn't assure safety. There also seems to be some shift to knives as there's been two recent stabbings, thus it stands to reason that guys have gotten better at watching their drinks. Don't underestimate the ability of the criminals to adapt. Even skipping the girls, one better constantly scan their environment when out and about, though you can still wind up a sitting duck for a robbery in a restaurant. Keep in mind that many of us can't blend in as well as a Hispanic gentleman like David. Yes, watch out for the "fear mongers" but also the over confident and the overly optimistic Yotubers who make a business for themselves promoting migration to Medellin. These are the larger problem.
    There's also something very important that we learned from David's video, and that's not to expect any help from the Colombians. If you are victimized you'll usually be blamed if not laughed at, though once in a while the police will secure an arrest and put on a show. Also many Colombians are very envious of foreigners from wealthier countries and will be glad when you get trouble.

But I think i was one of the few lucky people. She was the nicest most genuine woman ever. She really really looked after me throughout my whole trip. She was telling me what to do and what not to do. And she was always close by to me when we were out in crowded areas. She never let me go out at night and she took me to lots of cultural spots to see. We went to a lot of museums and sights. All in all it was such a wonderful experience. I got to see how beautiful Colombia is. But i do want to say even if you want to do something like this please be careful and never let your guard down. It was only really after a week that i felt like she didn't have any ulterior motives. We are currently organising her Visa to come live with me in Australia. She honestly such a nice woman and she also has aspirations to live outside of colombia and improve her english as well. I'm truly blessed to meet such a wonderful and caring woman. Anybody who's lived in Medellin for an extended period of time knows what you are saying is the truth. It's just a fact of life here, (there , I just moved back to Canada after spending two years there) Unfortunately I think this trend of drugging and robbing, even killing/kidnapping foreigners is not going to end anytime soon. So the best we can do is make people aware of the true dangers that exist in Colombia. In the end people have to make their own decisions based on the information they have.
    My own two cents for what it's worth, if you're looking to party and find beautiful women do NOT go to Medellin, choose another destination , yes it may be more expensive but it's pretty much a guarantee your night is not going to end well if you're using tinder in Medellin.

    Yeah this is exactly why I won’t be going back. Spent several months there, hooked up with some girls, it was a good time 😉. But I was always on edge and treated the whole thing like a military operation. After a while the stress of constantly scanning my environment for threats wasn’t worth it anymore. No plans to return, as there are many countries with beautiful women, no need to go to the most dangerous one you can find

      I'm not sure what you mean, I guess it's lonely men searching for poor and needy girls create a dangerous mix. If you decide to get into the fire you'll get burned. Those unfortunate foreigners that came for cheap sex and drugs and end up mugged or killed were playing with fire, plus they're not the tourists we want at all.

      David leads a wholesome lifestyle in Colombia. He's not there for sexual encounters with strage woman or drugs. He's invested with the culture. It has nothing to do with his Hispanic heritage. He's still seen as a foreigner but one who respects the culture.

    • @EvanFilm
      @EvanFilm 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @LouMedallo lol you don't know what someone's intentions are. Most people that go to medellin participate "in the culture". A big part of the anger from the locals is non-hispanic men coming and stealing there women. It's pretty obvious I've seen them state this in videos. I'm pretty sure Dave is a single guy, not much difference between him and the victims of many of these crimes. Your comment is very naive. As if all the victims are scumbags because they want to meet a woman...but Dave is different....he is a celibate angel that doesn't desire sex

    The problem is not only the foreigners. Colombians don't want to take any responsibility. Unfortunately stealing is not a serious crime in Colombia. Lack of moral discipline is a serious issue

    Hi . I went to Colombia a few times and I met several Colombian women. I don't necessarily speak in a context of escort and client. There is something I don't understand about this country. In Colombia people are paid very little for their work. Salaries are almost like in the third world. Working full time at minimum wage brings in around a hundred pesos. But everything is expensive in this country. how people live and survive. For example an iPhone can cost $1000 but people earn on average $200 per month. how is it possible to make a living from your work in colombia thank you

      You said:
      *”Salaries are almost like in the third world.”*
      It is the 3rd world. Regardless of how much more developed Colombia is these days, it’s still a 3rd world country. I don’t think safety in Colombia is even a major concern for the government.
      The government is like whatever about it, because they know that tourists will keep flocking there regardless. I don’t think any of the murdered tourists cases this year have even been solved.

    R

    I really enjoy your channel and I like how you address safety issues from time to time. I grew up in NYC when it wasn't safe, it's much better now than before. A lot of our friends that grew up in very safe suburbs and even my little cousins (they're from CA), they always think we're being paranoid about safety. They think the world is like how they grew up. I feel like people that grew up in safe bubbles have a hard time understanding the world is very different. When my little cousin moved to NYC for a bit, she didn't listen, was out at all hours all over and admitted she was very scared in some neighborhoods. They were areas we warned her about avoiding especially at night. Nothing happened to her but I don't understand why people put themselves in those situations when warned. Thanks! We'd like to travel throughout Latin America and your channel comes in handy :)

    Thanks for the tour, David. Makes me want to go back to my favorite country. On the subject of your video- why spend your time in a big city? I say spend a few days in Medellin and the bulk of your time exploring the country. There’s so much to see. Other places like the Eje Cafetero, boyaca, Santander, are safer. There are great places to hike and enjoy nature. Dont do stuff after dark, early to bed and early to rise, don’t try to “get lucky” it’s not realistic. However I am a little older and wiser, when younger it would have been a different story;-) Another thing - Colombians were almost always friendly with me because I was interested in their country and culture. I wasn’t trying to get laid or get high. They won’t respect you if that’s your reason for being there. I’ve spent a total of nine months in the country and traveled all over from putumayo and Nariño to Guaviare to chocó to the Caribbean coast and never had a problem.

    The colombian guy says that for foreigner 10 000 dollars is nothing, he is crazy. In France 10 000 dollars is fives months of salary, it is a huge amount of money. Maybe it is because of american people who have a lot of money and waste 10 000 dollas in few days that colombian people think we ae all rich. In Europe, we don't have a lot of money, France, Spain, Italy, the salary is low.

    Here's the thing it's great that you are bringing awareness or what ever you call it, but what Americans need to do anywhere not just Colombia, is have self awareness. Americans tend to go to other countries and think that because the money exchange is high and people seem nice, they get the sense that they run that country, and they let their guard down. Visit the world have self awareness respect everyone everywhere you go do not flash jewelry or money, and if possible link up with a local that knows the ins and outs of where you are so they can keep you out of possible dangers that you may encounter because let's face danger is everywhere, you can be robbed kidnapped killed anywhere. STAY HUMBLE!!

    I think it's just a big mistake for American men to go over there and use any kind of dating apps whatsoever, because you're a Target and you're taking a huge risk. I think if you are an American and you're seriously looking for a Colombian relationship then you need to spend time over there and get to know people and be friendly with people and hopefully meet someone through the right channels and not take a risk on these dating apps where you are considered prey.

    GOD Bless you bro! This is truth telling. “Hookup Culture” is NOT a thing in other parts of the world. Before you trust anyone DO NOT TRUST ANYONE. These people envy your ability to freely come and go into their country as you please. They are stuck and desperate. Be safe and protect yourself at all times.
