Can I just say, the way you display the rotating Gameboy screens at the start, with the game slowly coming into view as the light reflects off it, looks absolutely amazing. It really makes me appreciate the beauty of these old systems. Nothing can hold a candle to the original way to play these games imo. Oh and the rest of the video is cool too. :)
Gotta correct you Joe, the Gameboy Color did NOT sell close to 120 million units. If you look carefully that number includes all the Gameboys that can play original games of which the GB Color is the 4th and last version.
One of my favorites from this system was DeJa Vu I and II. Namely because for the longest time it was the best way to get the two most interesting Macventure games.
Still got my old purple Game Boy Color from 1999, still works too. I got a lot of great memories playing Pokemon Red and Silver, Wario Land 2, Links Awakening DX and all my older Game Boy games on it. The only thing was i never had the rechargeable battery pack for it so i was always looking for batteries to play the bloody thing lol. Great episode :)
Am really glad they decided to greatly expand the included RAM, as you can really tell that this CPU had a lot of untapped potential that was held back by the lack of RAM on the original Gameboy. Theres quite a bit more performance being squeezed out of this chip w the extra RAM. The music is also more detailed now as a result 😊
Keep in mind that they did increase the CPU speed for the Game Boy Color. Joe was mistaken on that part of the specs. But your point is still valid as you can see a lot of improvement along with some interesting ideas from those later games. Add to that some really clever developers like Crawfish and Wayforward. The screen is worth mentioning as well. While the small resolution was a big limitation, the GBC's screen handled motion better than the originals and even the Pockets so that also let developers push things further. I never had a GBC, but I remember when it was new and I liked seeing developers do interesting things with it.
@@ravagingwolverine I'd say the GBA is an even more interesting case. Everyone compares it to the SNES but in actuality it was far more powerful than the SNES, and you could clearly see that in some of the 3D titles. There was some truly impressive games for that little ARM chip. Was just a matter of time before ARM CPU's took over the mobile market.
@@skins4thewin Yeah, the GBA is also interesting in a similar way. I really loved seeing the attempts at 3D games and demakes of console games. I remember Max Payne being really interesting. GBA had a Tomb Raider game that I remember enjoying. And Tekken Advance was surprisingly good, so I heard. When the GBA was current, it was my favorite platform over the consoles of the time. Not only was it more powerful than the SNES, but the games were larger, which helped. But it did lose some of that power advantage, in terms of what was on screen, from having to run the audio in software.
@@ravagingwolverine Totally agree, I spent copious amounts of time playing my GBA, specially once the SP came out & FINALLY got that backlit screen it so desperately needed! The main thing that made it great was not only the power it had for 2D games, but just the game library in general. It had a TON of truly amazing games for it! The GBA still to this day probably has the best overall game library of any portable!
The Game Boy Color is one of my favorite game ststems ever, there's so much hidden on that platform, especially if you look into imports, unreleased prototypes and even the bootleg scene is amazing.
oracle of ages/seasons are among the best gbc games glad they got mentioned. nothing the zelda series has done since has felt as interesting and compelling. their worlds are really cool and i wish they had been developed more almost as a spinoff series or something
Thanks for highlighting the must play GBC games, i was all about PS1 when this came out so I missed out on the Game Boy Color, I did come back for the GBA though and every Nintendo handheld that came after it
The GBC is the perfect kind of retro look and feel. There's also a rather active indie game scene releasing games to the system to this day, physical cartridges and all.
The GBC is sorely underrated and always seems to get lost between the original Gameboy and the GBA. Amazing what developers were able to pull off on such modest hardware. I had NO IDEA there were over 900 games for this thing.
Which is pretty crazy when you think about it, they had like what, 2 years between gbc and gba releases? They were practically pumping out games for this thing
I've always thought the Gameboy was a cool system, having the power of the NES in your pocket and whatnot. Top-shelf quality video is always, and still looking forward to hearing the story about how you got that SNES ASCII pad in the intro
The subtle, straightman delivery of the humor in this channel is becoming one of my favorite parts. I just stumbled on this channel a week or two ago, and I like it, the guy is informative, friendly, easy to listen to and pleasantly humorous without trying too hard.
You should have mentioned the GBC version of Donkey Kong Country. When the original trilogy hit the SNES the portable GameBoy got adapted games (the DK Land ones) that were way inferior to the SNES games. When they released the GBC port of Donkey Kong Country I was very impressed because it was fairly close to the SNES games, all the stages, nice music conversion, way better gameplay than DK Land and very good graphics all things considered. Coming from the DK Land that were "as good as portable DK gets", it was amazing.
My favorite Bomberman game on the Color is Pocket Bomberman. Another great ones Wario Land 3, Links Awakening Dx, Harvest Moon 3, Pokémon Puzzle Challenge and Ghosts and Goblins
Please tell me, how do you get footage with filters/grids to not look like complete ass once uploaded to youtube? Whenever I do it youtube compresses it and ruins my entire image, especially when there is a lot of quick motion. The GBC game look so much better with that effect.
Probably did it through a specific capture card, and then upscaled it on the GPU and uploaded it 4K but it's been upscaled there so all the lines are perfect :) Costs a fortune though, I didn't bother I just use a £60 capture card and put up with blurry lines. The Joe-Pro setup probably costs closer to £250-300 (or even £2500-3000 if you include the GPU). What are you running and what's your setup?
@@DailyCorvid He did respond to me on Twitter and told me, "I upload with a very high bitrate and resolution. So a 4K upload with a bitrate of about 69mbps." For older consoles I generally use Emulators through Retroarch played at 1080p then recorded in OBS. My GPU is an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1080... Definitely beginning to show its age.

That game has two actual roms in the cartridge, one for GBC and one for GB. There is also an Asteroids game that does something similar, the game will have different graphics if played in a SNES through a Super Game Boy.
Happy to see some love for Return of the Ninja and Motocross Maniacs 2. Legend of the River King 2 is probably one of my favorite game on the console. Otherwise these titles worth to be played: The Mummy, Woody Woodpecker Racing, Driver, Action Man : Search for Base X, Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue.
Quick correction: the GB had an effective CPU speed of about 1MHz. However, the GBC had a mode that allowed the speed to be doubled to about 2MHz. Therefore, there were games that needed twice the CPU power that could only run on the GBC.
@@guspaz I had always wondered why the Game Boy seemed so slow compared to the SNES or even NES, despite having a higher clock speed (yes, I know clock speed isn't everything, but the discrepancy was pretty extreme). So in a worst case scenario, it's similar to a 1 MHz CPU, but then, it could do better if it's running mostly instructions that take four cycles already?
@@3dmarth the best case is that it can execute around one million instructions per second (since it runs at 4.19 MHz), the worst case is less since there are instructions that take 8/12/etc cycles. I’m not super familiar with the NES architecture, I know that the NTSC one runs at 1.79 MHz and that the shortest instruction takes 2 cycles, and they’re not aligned by any multiple (there are instructions that take 2 cycles, 3 cycles, etc). The SNES is a whole other beast, being a 16-bit processor.
The “check points” in Mega Man Xtreme are what made the game possible on the original Game Boy. It was basically away to page out the level data and load new level data since the original Game Boy didn’t have enough RAM otherwise to replicate Mega Man X levels. It’s a technical limitation hidden as a gameplay element.
I was excited to find the Hunter x Hunter game, but I got stuck on the first boss... maybe I need to grind for more levels. Also speaking about Konami, too bad you didn't show their Goemon game, Seikuushi Dynamites Arawaru. It's one of the good ones, not nearly as frustrating as most Goemon games tend to be. Another semi-notable Color game is the Moomin game by Sunsoft
With the explosion of retro handhelds, it's crazy to remember some of us paid $30 for THAT version of Street Fighter Alpha 1, while nowadays, you can get the entire CPS2 AND Neo Geo libraries on the go for nearly the same price. That said, I enjoyed every minute of it (although I can't say I liked the GBC Dpad for fighters!) Edit: I'm glad you saved Shantae for last. The game looks like it was made on a completely separate, more powerful system. VERY impressive, and an aspect that might be lost if you didn't see the rest of the stuff on the GBC.
THE POWER QUEST MUSIC AT THE START??? fantastic choice, great taste in music! that music still kicks butt! glad im not the only one who played that game, definitely one of my favourite gbc games back in the day!
the best thing about Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons is that there's a bit of Crossplay tied to them, what seems like double dipping is more of an interesting idea to get around the limitations. in any case, the GBC was a decent upgrade from the OG, it was lighter, nicer to look like, and it came in a ton of different colors, allowing your handheld to stand out at school or public hangouts.
Anyone who doesn't think the Game Boy Color is it's own system only need to look at the 145 games that only work on the GBC. That's a longer list that many other systems have that people don't argue about whether they're their own system or not.
I remember getting my GBC back in Christmas ‘99. I got the Pokémon Yellow bundle for Christmas, and it came with the Pikachu GBC. I played the heck out of my GBC, and I still have it to this day!
Joe, I know you aren't even reading this but still thank you for such a cool presentation! No blocky mess, just a beautiful big-ass lcd matrix screen! Game boy never looked better and you're a real shader pro!
GBC had a weird lifecycle - the og GB had been out forever, GBC comes out in late '98, then bam GBA comes out in early 2001. Weirdest part is Nintendo lumps GBC sales with og GB sales, shrouding how well the product actually did, or didn't.
I love this episode! Please make more of this amazing console. Could you also make an episode about the rom hacks that add color and new features to the original gameboy games (Super Mario Land 1 & 2, Megaman 5, etc)?
I think my most played GBC game is port of "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2". Developers got incredible amount of style and vibe of original areas and mechanics into portable size. Port of first game "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" also exists but it's bit weirder with topdown perspective instead of sideview used in second one.
The very best Game Boy Color games IMO are : - Pokemon Red & Blue + Yellow - Pokemon Gold & Silver + Crystal - Wario Land II - Wario Land III - The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons - The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages - The Legend of Zelda: A Link's Awakening DX - Mario Tennis - Mario Golf - Snoopy Tennis - Shantae - Conker's Pocket Tales - Mickey's Racing Adventure - R-Type DX - Game & Watch Gallery 2 - Game & Watch Gallery 3 - Resident Evil Gaiden - Bomberman Quest - Bomberman Max: Blue Champion & Bomberman Max: Red Challenger - Bugs Bunny: Crazy Castle 3 - Bugs Bunny: Crazy Castle 4 - Spy vs. Spy - Konami GB Collection Vol.1 - Vol. 4 - Bugs Bunny & Lola Bunny: Operation Carrot Patch - Looney Tunes Racing
Elevator Action EX did come out in the US... kinda. Its graphics were altered and it was released as Dexter's Laboratory: Robot Rampage for the American market.
I liked the Mission Impossible game on gbc. It has some spy gimmick features like using your gba as a tv remote. The Rayman games on GBC are excellent as well.
the nintendo hardware. especially the original GB, was so much behind its competitors but the marketing, the amount of games and the fun factor are still untouchable imo!

Yeah I thought that sounded way too high
Yep Nintendo consider the Color a upgrade like DSi or New 3DS why counted with GameBoy
There's videos about the OG Gameboy that uses the same sale numbers. so yeah, Gameboy is a Gameboy is a Gameboy.
I was in the middle of a very interesting video and I interrupted everything to watch gamesack
porn
me too
Same. Yes potential world war 3 is very interesting but... There's a new gamesack video!
I stopped doing CPR on an orphan to watch this!
@@mrdeatheli priorities
I appreciate all the hardwork, editing, stop motion, and playing these games that went into making this video! Keep 'em coming
*hard work
Loved the Game Boy Color! It was my first gaming hardware ever, such fond memories! Great video as always! love the angled scan-line shots!
Kudos to Joe for slipping that 6 million dollar man reference into today's episode.
The Game Boy Color is one of my favorite game ststems ever, there's so much hidden on that platform, especially if you look into imports, unreleased prototypes and even the bootleg scene is amazing.
no its not you big liar
your favorite system is the Mattel Hyperscan you big noob
dont you ever lie to me again tough man
A rare treat, a handheld-focused episode! Thanks, sack!
This is your best video in a while, so many cool games to check out. More videos like this please.
My favorite part of this video is the stop motion animation at 1:00
Love a good game sack episode great way to end a Saturday night
Still coming up with great themes after all this time. Thanks Joe!
I've seen a fair amount of sacks in my time, but Joe definitely has the best one around! Sacktastic as always!
oracle of ages/seasons are among the best gbc games glad they got mentioned. nothing the zelda series has done since has felt as interesting and compelling. their worlds are really cool and i wish they had been developed more almost as a spinoff series or something
Thanks for highlighting the must play GBC games, i was all about PS1 when this came out so I missed out on the Game Boy Color, I did come back for the GBA though and every Nintendo handheld that came after it
I just updated my Analogue Pocket with to run all kinds of cores and you upload this video. Absolute god tier timing.
14:45 "Ryu Feels empty, and very upset!"
Lol we have all been there Ryu, we have all been there.......
Probably did it through a specific capture card, and then upscaled it on the GPU and uploaded it 4K but it's been upscaled there so all the lines are perfect :)
Costs a fortune though, I didn't bother I just use a £60 capture card and put up with blurry lines. The Joe-Pro setup probably costs closer to £250-300 (or even £2500-3000 if you include the GPU).
What are you running and what's your setup?
@@DailyCorvid He did respond to me on Twitter and told me, "I upload with a very high bitrate and resolution. So a 4K upload with a bitrate of about 69mbps."
For me it all depends on what I'm recording. For PS1 Era and up I play through a Retrotink Upscaler (1080P) or direct HDMI and record with an Elgato HD 60 Pro. For older consoles I generally use Emulators through Retroarch played at 1080p then recorded in OBS.
My GPU is an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1080... Definitely beginning to show its age.
"I upload with a very high bitrate and resolution. So a 4K upload with a bitrate of about 69mbps."
OMG that is mental!! :D Joe overkills like a Palestinian.... 69MB/s?!? My upload bit rate is 12MB/s and that's the highest it will go on my 8GB GPU lolol. Joe uploads at 7 times the rate I do!
Elgato is what I have but it sucks I am replacing it! Also have a Loupedeck and a copy of OBS. You're doing better than I bud; I completed failed to record anything below 720p :( I'm a lvl 1 noob lol.
@@StilesReviews
@@DailyCorvid I'm just always trying to improve things haha. What kind of capture card are you trying to get in place of an elgato out of curiosity?
The stop motion animation made this an instant sub for me. Cant wait to see the rest of your videos!
Oh you'll be glad you did.
Fun fact; if you play Conker's Pocket Tales on the original Game Boy, the level design itself becomes different.
so its one of the few GBC games that will work on the original Gameboy?
oh hey that WAS a fun fact! im gonna look up some comparison videos if those exist :)
That game has two actual roms in the cartridge, one for GBC and one for GB.
There is also an Asteroids game that does something similar, the game will have different graphics if played in a SNES through a Super Game Boy.
@@GeomancerHT that would be Space Invaders
Basically all instructions took multiples of four cycles to complete.
Thanks!
Thank you!
I was at work and I quit my job because a new gamesack video came out and I couldn’t wait to watch. That is how devoted I am to this channel!
“Does the ps5 have a printer?!…. Yeah, didn’t think so” was such a great line and gave me a good chuckle. Great video! :)
Holy crap that new animation you guys are using looks so cool. Seriously I love that close-up angle it just looks immersive
If Joe was around in the 30's I'm positive that he would get color TV's made faster than when they were actually released
Instant classic episode! I hope you can revisit the console again in the future cause GBC games are so nostalgic.
Ages>Season
I liked Seasons a bit more
With the explosion of retro handhelds, it's crazy to remember some of us paid $30 for THAT version of Street Fighter Alpha 1, while nowadays, you can get the entire CPS2 AND Neo Geo libraries on the go for nearly the same price. That said, I enjoyed every minute of it (although I can't say I liked the GBC Dpad for fighters!)
Edit: I'm glad you saved Shantae for last.
Perfect timing on this episode, Joe! I just got an Anbernic RG35XX and needed some help focusing on the best GBC games to try out.
the best thing about Zelda Oracle of Ages/Seasons is that there's a bit of Crossplay tied to them, what seems like double dipping is more of an interesting idea to get around the limitations.
in any case, the GBC was a decent upgrade from the OG, it was lighter, nicer to look like, and it came in a ton of different colors, allowing your handheld to stand out at school or public hangouts.
Anyone who doesn't think the Game Boy Color is it's own system only need to look at the 145 games that only work on the GBC. That's a longer list that many other systems have that people don't argue about whether they're their own system or not.
A great night tonight when there is a new episode of gamesack!
I remember getting my GBC back in Christmas ‘99. I got the Pokémon Yellow bundle for Christmas, and it came with the Pikachu GBC. I played the heck out of my GBC, and I still have it to this day!
I believe the Game Boy Color CPU runs as twice the original Game Boy clock speed. Over 8 MHz, not 4 MHz.
What a nice surprise to start this new day out. Thank you sir, I was getting really freaking bored and couldn’t pick out a video game to play.
Can't say this system was ahead of it's time, but boy did it have some incredible games.
*its time (possessive pronoun)
it's = contraction of "it is" or "it has"
All contractions have apostrophes, but possessive pronouns never do.
@@alvallac2171 I bet you pulled a lot of girls with that line
I love this episode! Please make more of this amazing console. Could you also make an episode about the rom hacks that add color and new features to the original gameboy games (Super Mario Land 1 & 2, Megaman 5, etc)?
2:37 "Does the PlayStation 5 have a printer?" 😂
The $6M man sound effect is art. Perfect.
The very best Game Boy Color games IMO are
:
- Pokemon Red & Blue + Yellow
- Pokemon Gold & Silver + Crystal
- Wario Land II
- Wario Land III
- The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
- The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link's Awakening DX
- Mario Tennis
- Mario Golf
- Snoopy Tennis
- Shantae
- Conker's Pocket Tales
- Mickey's Racing Adventure
- R-Type DX
- Game & Watch Gallery 2
- Game & Watch Gallery 3
- Resident Evil Gaiden
- Bomberman Quest
- Bomberman Max: Blue Champion & Bomberman Max: Red Challenger
- Bugs Bunny: Crazy Castle 3
- Bugs Bunny: Crazy Castle 4
- Spy vs. Spy
- Konami GB Collection Vol.1 - Vol. 4
- Bugs Bunny & Lola Bunny: Operation Carrot Patch
- Looney Tunes Racing
The video didnt even start and it already made my day!Pure love for your sack!
Love falling asleep to your videos 😊
Loved hearing you bring up Power Quest, that game has been a hidden gem in the GBC library for near 2 and a half decades!
Fun Fact:
The letters that spell COLOR are colored as the original colors initially released.
C= Berry
O= Grape
L= Kiwi
O= Dandelion
R= Teal
That's how I display mine! 😎👍
fun fact
i dont care
bring it on tough man if you disagree
Elevator Action EX did come out in the US... kinda. Its graphics were altered and it was released as Dexter's Laboratory: Robot Rampage for the American market.
I liked the Mission Impossible game on gbc.
It has some spy gimmick features like using your gba as a tv remote.
The Rayman games on GBC are excellent as well.
Great video, not sure why this didn’t pop up in my TH-cam feed 12 days ago. I’ve been waiting for the game boy color video forever!
Thank God, what a wonderful day! I've been dying for this episode! Gonna watch this 50+ times
A great video, love your screen filter here. Hoping for a part two with some shmups.
I still have my gameboy color and love to play it from time to time. It was such a good system
Crazy to think, it is still the best selling handheld console ever, beating the Switch about 30 times over.
I love these console showcase videos. Always find something new to check out.
So glad you did this video. Gameboy color really maximized the capabilities of 8 bit gaming.
the nintendo hardware. especially the original GB, was so much behind its competitors but the marketing, the amount of games and the fun factor are still untouchable imo!
Woah, that Power Quest music at the start was a surprise nostalgia hit. Loved that game.
Metal gear solid is awesome on GBC. My friend and I actually played multiplayer via two Gameboy players on two TV's with a link cable 👍
Wow there are so many games you forgot to mention.
Magical Chase, Azure Dreams, Alone in the dark, Warlocked. Also there is an unfinished version of the original Resident Evil!
You forgot to mention Dexter Lab: Robot Rampage released in North America only which is the re-skinned of Elevator Action EX.
I didn't even realize that Game Boy Color didn't have an episode yet. Thank you!
Oh boy 11PM time for Game Sack
