Yeah...that screen was ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. LCD's in general did not become halfway decent until the mid 2000's. If you replace the screen on a GG with a modern one, you get MUCH better battery life, and most of the games still hold up today. 2D pixel art holds up much better than 3D. You can get quite a lot of GG games on the 3DS Virtual Console too. I have Defenders of Oasis on my 3DS...used to have it for the Game Gear back in the day and had fond memories of it.
I just want to say thank you for continuing to make videos. Your lengthy videos give me tons of enjoyment, and nostalgia, and i really hope you keep it up. You're one of the few that make me forget the hardships i'm currently dealing with in life, and it's awesome to just forget and watch a relaxing hour of your show. Thank you once again Dave and Joe.
Looked cool and all, but these drone shots are getting a little over done on youtube. Everybody and their grandmother has a drone these days, it seems.
The fact that you guys have not only been working together for many years but that you have a real, meaningful friendship comes through on every video. It must be fun working with a close friend. Makes work much more enjoyable.
I'm watching the whole series in order and I'm surprised about Joe's *apparent* (we all know Joe and Dave are the Sultans of Sarcasm) evolution (not a change: just an evolution) on his opinion about the GG over the course of these 7 years. I had mine back in 1992, enjoyed, loved caressed and finally destroyed it (confound those shitty capacitors!). Bought it back last year (with brand new capacitors... Or so they say) with a nice Everdrive. Never been happier. This channel has everything one can ask for about gaming. Keep on truckin', dudes!
I grew up playing grindy RPG in Japan. It's normal for me and in fact, when I play modern Western RPG, I tend to overshoot the level requirements and I ruin the game.
Grinding is so relaxing to me. I have many personal stories where I couldn't sleep or couldn't sleep for days, and would grind in whatever portable RPG I was playing to help me sleep.
When I was about 3, Everyone I knew back in the day had a gameboy, I had a game gear. Besides the battery life, I loved it. Sonic, Power Rangers, Lion King, Looney Tunes, Shinning Force. All so fun on this system.
I think that if there was one episode of Game Sack that I would say is representative of Game Sack, it would be this episode. Long, in depth, high quality, funny, and a total tour that makes you feel like you know about Game Gear even if you didn't own one.
This video makes me want to start collecting for the Game Gear again. Just hearing all of those sounds and seeing all of those games really brought me back. I got a launch unit back in my Junior year in high school and played the hell out of it until my Senior year. I haven't touched it since then.
Defenders of Oasis is one of favorite old school RPGs, mostly because of how simple it is. While very cookie cutter, it does have some unique elements, such as how you level up the Genie, which is done fully by items, and each character having a special move. It’s easy and simple but the music and the grindy gameplay do something for me.
On the Z80: I helped dismantle one of Zilog's two Nampa, Idaho fabrication plants. I wish I would of held on to the wafers we were able to take home but I had no idea what the Z80 was all about, hell I have no idea if the wafers I had were even related to Z80 designs. We had people from Canon come in to help us dismantle and package the 'chip printers' for shipping. I think most of it was headed to Asia. I want to say Korea, perhaps Taiwan- it was some years ago. Anyways the project was ran by some Italians, and they were super awesome, we drank a bunch of Grappa as the project winded down. Again had I know what I know today... I just wish I could of documented what happened. It was local guys like me from Nampa and an outfit that specialized in dismantling industrial places like a Zilog plant and they were out of Texas but brought in people from across the country. The Canon guys we're really nice, I used to talk to them in my ignorance and they at one point told me that the machines being shipped out of country could of been tooled to make "something" like a 386 or so. I dunno, all I know is a Z80 was mentioned and I'm rambling!
Freezetusk More like PS3/4 and the Vita with the Master System/Genesis and the Game Gear. I'm pretty sure there was more PS3 games on the Vita than PS4. But the Vita was an amazing piece of hardware (and the Game Gear, well, wasn't), it's too bad that Sony fucked it up.
@Marc Carran And most Game Gear games are the same as the Master System versions but at a lower resolution, while almost every non 2D Vita game that was on PS3, let alone PS4, is severily downgraded, so I don't think it's the same case at all for the 2 consoles.
I saved my Game Gear. The sound had turned to garbage. I ended up opening it up, and taking the sound capacitor off, and replacing it with a brand new one, and presto, she sings again!
The Game Gear never deserved the heat it got. Sure its backlight was pathetic and yea it drained batteries way too hard, but nowadays I think it should be clear to everyone that it had an incredibly library of games and was absolutely amazing!
Had one of these badboys back in the day. Swapped it for a GameBoy. Not because it was crap (the battery life was atrocious) but because it was so hard to get games in Australia. I'd read about cool new games all the time in magazines & I couldn't even find a copy of Sonic 1. It was like being a Vita owner, only now it's so easy to import.
The Game Gear was the first system I ever actually owned when I was a kid, so this review was great. I miss my old Game Gear (traded it away years ago), and especially a game that wasn't actually shown on here, which kinda surprised me. No Shining Force 2: Sword of Hajya? I played the hell out of that game. I'm really glad it's one of the ones that got a 3DS E-shop port. Otherwise, I didn't even realize there were so many good games on the GG (I was especially surprised by Sylvan Tale and Batman Returns)! Goes to show how little I had in the way of access to magazines of the time (other than Sega Visions) that reviewed many of the games on it. Great work guys.
While I loved my GameBoy just like everyone else, I have many fond memories of playing my Game Gear on long car rides. Sonic 2 and Sonic Chaos were some of my favorite games.
Given it's entirely based on the Master System from just a few years prior, and is even slightly better tech-wise, it's actually impressive how much they were able to shrink it down to even that form factor. But that plus the backlit LCD screen is why it's power consumption on batteries is so rotten. That about sums up nearly all laptops from the time also.
Re: the outro. I remember back when Nintendo decided they needed more 'tude and their "Play It Loud" campaign with different colored GameBoys and commercials with songs by the Butthole Surfers
Such an underrated handheld. I had to get the capacitors replaced but the games that I have were all fun! Some of my favs are Streets of Rage 1/2, Arena: Maze of Death, Dragon Crystal, Aladdin, Ax Battler, Tails Adventure, Land of Illusion, Shinobi I/II, Sonic the Hedgehog 1/2, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, and Vampire: Master of Darkness.
Perfect timing. I found a set that included two Game Gears, 13 games (including two on this episode), a case and a link cable, all for $7.99 at a local thrift on Friday. Of course the Game Gears need capacitors replaced but still was pretty surprised to find them like that.
Thanks to the 3DS VC introducing me to several GG games, I really enjoyed the tiny library available on the system. Happy to see Defenders of Oasis get a mention as that's a hidden RPG gem IMO, but I was a bit sad to see that the SRPGs of the system like Royal Stone, Crystal Warriors and the Shining Trio were all skipped. Oh well, maybe in a SRPG episode
That introduction shot for the Game Gear and the games was EPIC! Very well done. I miss my old Game Gear and appreciated the TV antenna add on mostly when I was stuck in church. XD
Game Sack Sonic 1 and 2 are the two Games I played the most on the GG never played TrippleTrouble though. Played the Sonic Chaos Game back then on the Master. Its generic but the first Games that come to mind for me thinking of the Gamegear.
Actually never mind - you know whats good - i get that you want to focus on the grat lesser known titels - do it exactly the way you think it should be done
Game Sack, technically not Sonic, but Tails Adventure would be interesting. It's a slower-paced Metroidvania than trying to be a Sonic when the Game Gear doesn't have dat blast processing. :P
I'm not very well-versed on the Game Gear, but some of the games you've shown in this video look pretty interesting! I should probably give some of them a shot, I was particularly interested in SiIvan Tale and GG Doraemon, they look amazing! Batman Returns looks pretty good too... Also 19:31 Karnov!
It looks as though he's finally realizing how bad Sonic games actually are and how much he has wasted his life being bent over and ploughed with bad games from Sega over the years
Long time viewer/First time commenter - Oh man... I had the hand-me-down Gamegear from my step brother a long with the RCA version of the Sega-CD. So many memories.... So weird why the Gamegear doesn’t get more props. Even Dave was giving it some criticism for not sounding as good as the Genesis. Would the Gameboy EVER even be compared to the SNES? Nope I don’t think so. The Gamegear was far superior to the Gameboy.
So was the Atari Lynx version 2. I had all 3. The Gameboy was more like a fun toy. It has some very good games but it doesn't wow you. The PC Engine was also far better. Shame about the batteries.
Great episode. I have minimal experience with the game gear, but the shining force game I played for it was excellent. Thanks for the hard work, Game Sack.
Awesome episode. I always wished to own a GG back then but only ever got the Gameboy. Now I have my own GG, changed all the capacitors and it's now collecting dust on the shelf. Still love it, though. As I did the ending skid of this one - soooooooooooo cool! keep up the good work guys
One major drawback of the GG is that the game library isn't very exciting overall. And the best games are pretty costly at this point. But man, it was a beast of a system for its time.
Very nice episode. I was just playing around with Ristar on the GG(Game Gear) a few days ago. It's pretty impressive to see what they pulled off with it, at least in terms of presentation. I didn't play it long, but may go back to it. Both Shinobi games on the machine are really good.
'A back-lit screen that, in many situations, was almost visible.'
Brutal.

Same here. I've bee watching these episodes over and over since around 2014. They really help to make me forget about other things in life.
That opening mountain shot though was pretty incredible!
Looked cool and all, but these drone shots are getting a little over done on youtube. Everybody and their grandmother has a drone these days, it seems.
As was Joe's open mouth shot. What was with that anyway?
Clone malfunction.

Did Joe bought a drone?
Joe's perfect game is all parallax scroling and sound tests.
Sounds like an Amiga demo.

Most definitely, that was half the game - grinding through a great battle system.
Phantasy Star 1, 2, and 3 were very grindy. I love that series but the grind when you start a new save was brutal.
@@robintst Phantasy star 2 is BRUTAL whit the grinding, but it's fun

Nothing like watching footage of Coca-Cola Kid while sipping on a nice, cold Pepsi.
Hell yeah, I'm a rebel.
OMG, the hours I spent tethered to a wall socket playing Krusty's Fun House. Nostalgia.
19:20 I pictured Joe sneezing out a cloud of white powder when he yelled, "I just freaking love coke!"

One major drawback of the GG is that the game library isn't very exciting overall. And the best games are pretty costly at this point. But man, it was a beast of a system for its time.
So, when is the Green Dog Game Sack special?
It's going to be a actual motion picture instead of a 30 min TH-cam video and it be filmed in Imax 3. Scheduled Release Date is 2019
Hot dog! I can't wait! ....Wait, I mean GAH-REEN DAWG.
the rechargeable battery dildo really caught me off guard, that was awesome!
You needed a few sets of rechargable batteries for this or you would have become a poor man ...
Very nice episode. I was just playing around with Ristar on the GG(Game Gear) a few days ago. It's pretty impressive to see what they pulled off with it, at least in terms of presentation. I didn't play it long, but may go back to it. Both Shinobi games on the machine are really good.
