The CPU is quite on par with the NES one. The 6502 basically works like "DDR" memory, operating twice per clock cycle and it's instructions take less cycles than the DMG ones, however as the DMG is clocked a bit higher than 2x, it kinda compensates for it.

And the best part is that it wasn't even the device HE wanted to make, but he knew his team had cooked up something good and wasn't going to let it die. Yokoi was incredible.
And from Okada saying "Fuck Yokoi, we're doing an actual console anyway". Yeah, this thing really had all the odds against it and still came to be, and succeeded!

I wouldn't be the gamer I am today if not for the GameBoy. I _always_ preferred playing games on my own, wherever I was. Many of my fondest gaming memories are car trips where the hours would widdle away playing Tetris, Mario Land, Operation C and much later, Zelda and Pokemon. I might honestly consider the GameBoy Color to be my favorite gaming device, ever. The minimal colorization of the pre-set pallets the GameBoy Color had that made sprites a different color than the background seemed like voodoo to me, as this was something even the Super GameBoy couldn't do. It made games that I had played in green monochrome come alive in the way watching rare color film of WWII makes that time in history come alive.
Hiroshi Yamauchi was a really smart businessman. Instead of accepting the initial Game Boy screen that may not have been good enough for consumers, he waited until Yokoi and R&D1 were able to solve the problem. He was not afraid to go back on his own decision to cancel the product once he saw a prototype closer to how he envisioned it. His foresight was especially remarkable given his unfamiliarity with games and lack of any programming/ engineering experience.
I was lucky enough to have a Gameboy Pocket back in the day. The screen was super nice, as the image was sharper and the screen size was actually a bit larger than the original Gameboy screen.
Great to see another video! It's crazy to see how rocky of a history the development of this was. It definitely put a lot of things into perspective. On a somewhat related note, this video put me over the edge on getting another classic DMG model. I had been thinking about one for a while, but bit the bullet today and am having a backlit mod done to it as well. Thanks! Haha.
The Gameboy Camera is what got me into taking pictures and messing around with stop motion. You only got 30 frames but I could make some cool shit with those 30 frames lol. It also had effects like mirroring so you could be in one side of the frame and then in the other at the same time. It was a neat thing to have.

Thanks! Yeah, it's definitely much better know. After I finished the perfect dark video I was in a ton of pain. It's nothing like that now but it was pretty bad for a few years.

So happy you're back! I hope you're recovering from your injury! I've been recovering from a tendinosis injury for some years now myself. Excellent video. This is one of the few channels where I will go back and watch a video twice. This will be one of them. Amazing work! Always worth the wait. ❤️

Your storytelling and renders are out of this world!! I'm shocked to see you back, but so happy you are! I was going through my subscriptions a few weeks back and thought I hadn't seen anything from you in years, and you come back with this absolute gem. Your time and effort on this is so appreciated!
Thanks for sticking around, like you said, it's been a while since I posted. I was basically dealing with some bad tendinitis in both arms for years and finally doctors said I had to limit excessive clicking and typing as best I could so that it'd get better. 33:18 Had atleast two third party magnifying glasses with lamps for my old GBC. Always felt like they just got in the way, made the picture worse, and just created even more screen glare.
Man, every time I watch one of your videos I'm blown away at the production value. They are truly pieces of art! Glad you're back and so looking forward to your next video!
This is an EXCELLENT history of the GameBoy. I’ll never forget getting mine in 1989. It was incredible! I loved it and this retrospective gave me a great flashback of that wonderful time in my life. Thank you.
I was eagerly awaiting this video to get your take on this book. It is so much better than I expected!. I hope you would do the same for the Game Boy Color some day!
Thanks! I'd probably STILL be working on this video if it wasn't for you. I'm sure I'll cover the Game Boy Color at some point... I don't want to let that GBC 3D model go to waste 😆
If there's one take away from this video I'll try to remember, it is to not try and chalk up a console or device's success to one man. Like, just look at the design process here: two head designers butting heads to the point where they more or less "broke up" forever, and the management poisoning the boss's outlook to te point where it gets shut down, followed by their development partners at long last fixing the issue with a better screen AND the SNES being delayed so the boss felt he HAD to have some new tech to sell... so much chance and happenstance behind this wonderful invention coming to life. This is not the question of one lone brilliant visionary, but a bunch of people butting heads, stumbling, and having sheer luck and chance on their side COMBINED with ard work and determination. A wonder. No surrpise I keep hearing so much about how "every game released is a miracle" from people who work inside the business.
I video on the making of the wonderswan would be great the story of that device is more obscure and imagine how the industry would be toda y if gunpei dont have that accident, really sad.
Like everyone has previously stated, it’s really good to see new content on this channel. Also, you knocked it outta the park on this video. I love the use of 3D animation and using the gameboy onscreen graphics to tell the story. Great job Yahel.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it. It was a bit tedious to put the visuals for this one together but I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Glad people are digging it. Thank you again for the kind words.
The top subject WITHOUT A DOUBT who conspired against the GameBoy with Yamauchi was Shigeru F. Miyamoto, since he was the one who continued fighting against it even after release, one of those instances was by "not blessing" the first Mario Land. Miyamoto has and will always be jealous of Yokoi's and other people's capabilities, and it's been shown through the decades every time he cancels games and stuff that is not Mario or Zelda.
@@nappeywappey Just check any other Gameboy history documentaries, check history of cancelled Nintendo games by division and by whom, check which teams and people have brought the most innovative and original series within Nintendo and despite such creativity and even success these games have been sent back to the drawer while the Mario and Zelda have always been pushed first and foremost even when some of them have sucked balls. Don't trust what I say, do your own research and you will understand.
@@Herghhh I don't deny that, Zelda is great, it's even its own genre, but not thanks to Miyamoto, it's thanks to other talented teams and he receives the credit. He's overglorified.

If the Gameboy would have had a color screen, i would have wanted one back then.. my first system was the NES, but since the game gear had a color screen, that's the one i got.. I went back to Nintendo when the SNES came out.. that was an amazing system when it came out
The bit about "twice the CPU performance" in the GBC was simply that it had control bit that doubled the CPU clock - so it could run at the standard 4.19MHz for compatibility and games that didn't need the performance, and 8.38MHz for CGB only games that did.
Great doc! TH-cam recommended this vid and got hooked immediately. Got the gameboy and TMNT fall of the foot clan for Christmas in 1990 playing on it endlessly for days. Got the itch recently and re-bought another Gameboy and games to relive the nostalgia. Subscribed!

I got my gameboy for my 10th birthday in 1996. Came with Tetris and my mom got Centipede\Millipede as well. Eventually got the Camera and Printer. Good times.
Been a while, glad to see you back.

"I know I haven't posted a video in a while"
Bro, I hope your Tendonitis is getting better. Your channel is good, and knowing you are well, is awesome. Also, thanks for replying to the previous messages in your other videos. *007*
I actually skipped to this section of the video by accident。
I was nervous when you said , ”unfortunately".. Thanks again for all you put into these videos.
Thanks! Yeah, it's definitely much better know. After I finished the perfect dark video I was in a ton of pain. It's nothing like that now but it was pretty bad for a few years.
So happy you’re back you make some of the best retro gaming documentaries in the entire TH-cam industry!
Thanks so much. Glad to be back!
Duuuuude, great work! Really, really good stuff. I especially dig all the great quality modeling. You've been on a roll for a while. I still recommend your X-Band video to people all the time.
Thanks! I really tried to make this one stand out visually so I really appreciate the kind words about the 3D modeling and animation!
I was getting worried. Wondering where you've been. Kept checking in. I thought my notifications were off or something. Great vid! Quality as always.
Thanks! I'll definitely be posting regularly again now
You are back, can't wait to watch. I also took a hiatus on my much smaller channel. Feels great to be back. Cant wait to see this channel grow.
Thanks. Glad to be back
I just rewatched your X-Band doc last night and now this. Good timing.
Thanks for watching it again. And for sticking around. I do plan on uploading regularly again now
You were missed! Awesome creator back on the turf!
Thanks a bunch! Definitely plan on posting regularly again.
Good to see you back! I came across your channel a few years ago (before Covid) and have always been impressed with your production value!
Much appreciated! Very happy to be back
Good stuff! Filled in some interesting gaps in the story for me. Top notch editing too
Much appreciated!
So happy you're back! I hope you're recovering from your injury! I've been recovering from a tendinosis injury for some years now myself.
Excellent video. This is one of the few channels where I will go back and watch a video twice. This will be one of them. Amazing work! Always worth the wait. ❤️
Thanks. I've been dealing with it for years myself. It's finally gotten significantly better. Good luck with your recovery. It's a marathon but it gets better eventually
Well, I typed a lot at my job so unfortunately the videos and even gaming, had to go by the wayside. But I'm better and back now. I'll be posting regularly again.
Excellent video! It's like a late Christmas with you and @HistoricNerd releasing new videos!
Haha thanks. Just kind of worked out that we finished at the same time
I can't wait to finish this tonight! I'm happy to see a new video on your channel!
Hope you enjoy it!
You knocked this one out of the park, man. Great stuff!
Thanks!
We ALL missed you! I was actually looking up your videos and social media the other day to see if you were back yet. So happy to see it was right around the corner!
Thanks for being patient. Very happy to be back
I love this channel. What a treat to get a video before work
Thanks for watching. Hope you have a good day at work!

Had atleast two third party magnifying glasses with lamps for my old GBC. Always felt like they just got in the way, made the picture worse, and just created even more screen glare.
He’s back ! So excited to watch this !!!! 🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️🙇🏻♂️
I love so many of your Shots in this. So damn creative
Thanks man. Like I said earlier, high praise coming from you
Long time, no see! Had to do a double-take when I saw this in my notifications!
haha I only post when there's a solar eclipse
Awesome to see the channel back. Above and beyond with the animations and editing. Incredible skills
Thanks. Happy to be back!
Ello ello! Creator of Deadeus here, Thank you for including my game in your video. Really amazing stuff here and an easy subscribe for sure
So glad you came across the video! Fan of your work as well
Yay! I’m glad you’re making videos again
Thanks, happy to be back
Man, every time I watch one of your videos I'm blown away at the production value. They are truly pieces of art! Glad you're back and so looking forward to your next video!
Wow, thank you! More to come soon
This is an EXCELLENT history of the GameBoy. I’ll never forget getting mine in 1989. It was incredible! I loved it and this retrospective gave me a great flashback of that wonderful time in my life. Thank you.
World class as always. Great job.
Aww thanks. I try
Dude, you have a gift. Legit most underrated gaming channel on YT. Keep it up man!
Thanks so much!
It's really a rollercoaster of a story. So many things had to both go right and wrong for the Game Boy even to exist.
great video, the story telling and edition is top notch :D
Thanks for the kind words! Glad you liked it
I video on the making of the wonderswan would be great the story of that device is more obscure and imagine how the industry would be toda y if gunpei dont have that accident, really sad.
Return of the king! Glad I stuck around, well worth the wait!
Thanks for sticking around!
Man, what a great production. Attention to detail, tlhe sound, the background music, the narrative, everything. Love it!
Thanks a lot, I spent a ton of time working on this one so I appreciate it.
Thank you for coming back.
And thank you for waiting
The top subject WITHOUT A DOUBT who conspired against the GameBoy with Yamauchi was Shigeru F. Miyamoto, since he was the one who continued fighting against it even after release, one of those instances was by "not blessing" the first Mario Land. Miyamoto has and will always be jealous of Yokoi's and other people's capabilities, and it's been shown through the decades every time he cancels games and stuff that is not Mario or Zelda.
WHAAA our beloved miyamoto!??
where did you get this info from? it wouldnt be the first time that misinformation about miyamoto is spread (like the whole "hating rare" thing)
@@Dangnilo I know Mario has some stinkers but Zelda has been very consistent in quality gameplay and story.
@@Herghhh I don't deny that, Zelda is great, it's even its own genre, but not thanks to Miyamoto, it's thanks to other talented teams and he receives the credit. He's overglorified.
Great to have you back. Glad your healthy and making videos again. You and Low Spec Gamer need to do a tagteam
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. It's great to be back. And lowspec gamer saved me so much time. Great guy and great content creator
Just checked your channel the other day for new content. One of the best NeoGeo history videos ever. Can't wait to watch!
Thanks. I'm really happy with how that Neo Geo video turned. I was fortunate to have so many other great TH-camrs add their own experiences.
hey man, not sure if you remember me, but I was one of your first like 1000 subs back in the day. Just noticed you hit 100k! and I came here to say: Told you so!
Haha wow, that's going really far back. Thanks! Couldn't have made it without support from people like you, so thank you!
Amazing video dude! So happy to see you back!
Thanks a ton!
Great to have you back. The production quality on your videos is awesome. Really enjoyed this one and remember getting a Gameboy for my 11th birthday the year it came out.
Thanks so much. Very happy to be back
Welcome back! I’ve been hoping for some time for more great content from your channel. Amazing stuff!
More to come!
@@WrestlingWithGaming That’s great news! Top notch production quality in every aspect on your content. Love it!
This was so entertaining and interesting. I've heard the story before as I am a glutton for these kind of things. Still found it interesting and loved seeing your renders, nice work on those btw that's more my wheel house. Really can appreciate your hard work!
Thanks
Hell yeah, I’m always stoked to see you in my feed Yahel. This was a beautifully produced video and as always it was very informative. Looking forward to more content from you.
I appreciate that! Gotta you liked it and I do to upload regularly again now
SO glad you are uploading again, I really enjoy some of your work the most!
Thanks! I posted another video after this one in may too. I didn't post in June but I'm currently editing my next two videos and they should both be released this month. So definitely more on the way.
First video Ive seen but lovely work, the production quality and love the low spec gamer collaboration too I was immediately hooked . I apperciate how you didnt sugar coat anything either like how dark it got for gameboy creator when the president rejected it
Glad you enjoyed it! Lowspec was a big help. I'd probably just now be finishing the French version of the book with how long it was taking me to translate it lol. Thank you for the kind words about the video, I appreciate
@@WrestlingWithGaming Absolutely, I know english and french enough to be dangerous but my history thesis about germany in the 1920's-30's suffered because I didn't know german so I totally understand haha. C's get degrees at least haha but I am encouraged by the collobration we see now to translate works
Great video. So much care goes into these and it’s amazing. I got my gameboy when I was 5 years old and still have it.
It's amazing how a lot of the library still holds up. Thanks for the kind words and for watching
This is awesome Yahel! 100% worth the wait. It’s probably my second favorite after the Xband video which is my favorite YT video of all time. Can’t wait for the next project.
Thanks so much. And I promise, it won't be two years before the next video this time
I was so worried this channel was dead. I found it a year ago and loved the videos but noticed nothing had been added for a year. As time went by I thought, oh well easy come easy go I guess. So happy you are still making such great content.
Sorry about the delay in getting content out. Had some health issue I was dealing with but thankfully those are behind me now and I'll be posting regularly again. These videos still take a while to put together due to the editing but the plan is to try to get 2 out a month, but at least one.
Good content always takes time, pace yourself and concentrate on making them fun, unlike most gaming publishers today lol.
The renders on this are outrageous- the time you spent on it definitely paid off! Another great video Yahel!
Thanks, Laney 😊. I've definitely gotten a wee bit better from when I first started learning to do 3D modeling and animation lol
@@WrestlingWithGaming you seriously should be getting paid for this at this point!
Thanks for your hard work and dedication to quality
My pleasure. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it
thank you so much for the amazing vid, happy you're back!
Thanks and there's more to come!
Thank you again for mentioning Florent Gorges and giving him credit for his fantastic work. I can't recommend enough to read his books!
My pleasure!
As someone who hasn't seen your videos before, you have definitely earned a sub! Had just gone through 3 hours of math papers and sat down to watch this, massively entertaining, informative and relaxing, will be excited for more upcoming videos keep up the good work
Thanks so much and glad you liked the video. 3 hours of going through math papers does not sound fun. Hopefully the rest of your weekend is more relaxing and thank you again for the kind words.
Subscribed!
Thanks so much for the kind words. Spent a ton of time on this one so I appreciate it. And thanks for subscribing. I only post about one video a month but should have my next one out in a couple of weeks. Thanks again!
Such an enjoyable and informative watch!
Thanks!
Where have you been? So glad you’re back !!!!
As always: Awesome retrospective, Yahel. Keep up the good work! :)
Thank you! Will do!
This was so informing and well put together, normally I can hardly finish a 5 min video yet I watched this til the end. Also in part of chiptune composers or anybody that uses handhelds for music, props to the guy who designed the audio system for the gameboy 🖤
Thanks so much for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome back! Welcome back! Welcome back!
Thanks! Happy to be back
You're one of my favorite TH-camrs and it's great to see you back making videos again.
Thanks! I've got more videos coming and it won't take two years this time lol
@@WrestlingWithGaming Can't wait! 😀
Very glad you are back, you make some of the best video game related content on youtube! Know this!
Thank you!
Glad to see you again Yahel. Was already worried there. Hope everything is alright. Also these videos are the most calming thing. Feels a bit cheesy to say, but feels like everything is alright here.
Hey, long time no see. Glad you liked it! Things are good and I'll be posting regularly again.
Absolute top tier video! Quality over quantity. Glad to see you back :D
Thanks a lot! Means a lot coming from you
Nintendo sure liked betraying their business partners back then!
Great to see you again, btw! One of my favorite channels coming back is much welcomed news especially since one of my other favorites just ended. Only about 1/3 through the vid as of this comment but its as great as I would hope for and expect. Welcome back!
Pendarr! Great to see you in the comments again. And thank you for the kind words.
Good to hear you're doing better - this video was great and the graphics fantastic!
Thanks so much!
Welcome back sir! Great video to see!
