My new favorite thing as an old man is skipping the launch, waiting a year, then picking up the launch games for like five bucks each. This worked so well for PS3 and 360
That strategy has less success with Nintendo platforms. I think the Switch is the first Nintendo Console I’ve seen in 30 years which the 1st party games I’ve seen on any type of sale till multiple years later (usually for their respective Best Sellers Program).
@@MungkaeX This is true. Nintendo first-party games don't devalue nearly as quickly.
PS5 launch games don't seem to be getting discounts. Sony loves their new $70 price point.
The difference between generations is so minimal these days, I now wait until they release the revised version of the console, lol. By then, there's a great library to choose from, better storage and performance, cheaper prices, win win win, lol.
@@Jesse__H the "value" of games generally doesn't change. Nintendo specifically keeps prices high because they want to appear as a premium brand like Apple.
So I kinda messed up the delivery of the Jaguar "joke". At first I say Jaguar as I normally do (Jag-whar) but of course Brits pick that apart because how dare anyone pronounce anything differently than they do... so I rub it in by saying JAG-WIRE which is even worse. But instead it comes off as me thinking Brits pronounce it as Jag Wire which isn't what I intended. Oh well. I just wanted to trigger some Brits, but instead it's just comes off as confusing. I'll get y'all next time though!

I'm so upset that Greendog wasn't a launch title. It would have sold a million units within the console's first hour of release.
One note about Raiden Project: you actually can get proper TATE mode with controls properly rotated as well, it just requires a gameshark/action replay code to be used, but once you make a save after using that code it will retain the option as long as you don't go into the options menu and change it back until you use the code again
Thank you! I just put an old tv rotated sideways in an empty arcade cabinet and I hope this solves my control issue.
Raiden DX also has a proper TATE mode built-in.
Is their a fix for thumb fatigue from having to use the D pad for a shooter?
3:23 I... can kinda get the dialogue there. I believe that that's where Bat and Kenshiro first meet up after the time skip that leads to Hokuto no Ken 2. in Kenshiro's absence, he founded a group called the North Star army and, in a teary eyed reunion with the man who inspired him to be better, Bat tells Kenshiro that he can't wait for Lin to see that he's back, while Kenshiro comments that Bat has bulked up and become a real man, that he has the look of a hero about him.
Man I really need to read Fist of the north star.

Yeah, it kind of makes sense only if you're familiar with the source material. In "The Last Battle" the player wouldn't have that context, though.
The Dreamcast launch was my favorite. Stood in line at midnight and stayed up all night playing. It had awesome launch games.
I still love the end skits! They always make me smile. I especially loved this one, in particular the little slide he did after walking down the hallway. Keep 'em coming, Joe!
My favorite launch game would be Panzer Dragoon for the Saturn. One hell of a game for what eventually would become my favorite system ever.
So many titles, so many consoles. What a journey. From cartridge to CD. No matter which system you love, there are games to enjoy.
The British guy on the radio commercials for the car says "Jag-You-Are".
Yeah this is how English people say it. Jag-Wire I've never heard in my 35 years here.
They might do that as it's a brand name, like the "Zed-X" Spectrum.

Gradius III has one of my all time favorite soundtracks. One of the few times the home version beat out the arcade.

Haa. You’ve definitely put time into choplifter. Bouncing so the tank doesn’t show up. Shooting aa guns from the ground and flying backwards through the stage 3 cave. Love it.
On the N64 - didn't need much of a launch lineup mostly because you couldn't get a console :). I remember it being in very short supply for at least 8 months to a year after launch. By the time we found one for my brother there were already a few more games out like Star Wars, Wave Race, etc.
Sony took inspiration for that with the PS5. Still waiting for a killer app…and a console available to purchase in my area
Only console I've ever lined up to get on day one (at like 1 in the morning no less), and it was extremely amazing to experiene Mario 64 when I got home and popped it in for the first time, especially given the dedication and energy I'd put into actually getting the console the moment it was available. I even sold my PlayStation just so I could afford to get the N64, and although I did actually really enjoy the PlayStation and some of its games (WipEout and Doom were real highlights for me), I don't regret that decision. Man, the joy I got out of my N64....
I wanted a N64, my mother Couldn't get one for a year so when I got my N64 I had *Bomber Man* The one he fought different enemies during the Adventure mode..
I got *extremely* lucky on launch day. I walked into a Lechmere Home Goods store, and there was ONE console left. I (of course) snagged that-- along with Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64.
I did manage to get the N64 as launch. Other than Mario 64 though, there wasn't much else to buy it for. Honestly, you were better off getting it later as games were very slow to come out in the first months of the system.

For me the Snes was the best launch console, I played Mario literally for weeks, it was that much fun. Also loved Pilot wings! Can't wait for the next episode!
That Hang On/Astro Warrior bundle will always be a good memory for me. Astro Warrior is basically the game that got me into shmups.
Also, I can never forget playing Hang On at home, only to be blown away by Super Hang On when going to playland in Manhattan.
Man, I completely forgot about those original PlayStation games coming in the huge Sega CD style plastic cases.

I remember when I found snail maze. I was amazed! Choplifter was my first ever game after the built in hang on and safari hunt...oh also me too fir the parallax... when you mention this I nerd out.

Another fantastic episode from one of the best channels on TH-cam! Honestly, Game Sack was one of the biggest inspirations for me to do my GameCube Galaxy channel. So, on that note, thank you Joe (and Dave) for being a big inspiration!

I remember playing the Battle Arena Toshinden demo with my friend and yelling "Susan!" at each other when we did that one dude's move.

Although not a big commercial hit, I actually remember the Wii U having a great launch line up. Although it was mainly releases of existing titles for other systems, they had something for everyone: fighting, rpg, platformer, sports, fps, party game.
The next video game sack needs to work on is a whole video of hidden gems and he must do the whole video as metal jesus. You know the titular youtube personality that has a lot of hidden gems in his collection
I somehow entirely scrubbed Kileak from my memory banks. That first mech shot as well as the spinning pickup threw me right back to childhood.
We got the Master System version with Safari Hunt but i absolutely fell in love with Astro Warrior when i played it at my friends place.

I paused grading projects for work so I could watch this... and seeing your extended focus on the PlayStation launch was *awesome*. Although I only bought two launch games on September 9th-- Ridge Racer (of course) and NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, it wasn't long before I bought Air Combat and ESPN Extreme Games. Namco sure had PlayStation development dialed in (thanks, System 11!).
I still give the nod for my favorite console launch lineup to the Dreamcast. I dropped well over $700 on launch day, between the console, games, and accessories. I was working for FuncoLand at the time, so I didn't get to personally enjoy the launch at home like I wanted to... but the flip side of that was that I had the chance to play through (and beat!) Sonic Adventure and Blue Stinger at the store before the games came out!
Thanks, as always, for your hard work. I've been binge-watching a lot of these videos and it's been a blast revisiting them while staying current when new content comes. You've helped to make these last 15 months (and counting) more bearable.

The guy who did those early voices on the Neo Geo went by BJ Love. Best pen name ever. Whenever they needed voicework with an American accent, he was their man.
He also voiced Krauser in the Fatal Fury games and KOF 96.

I had chill throughout the PlayStation segment. I have so many fond memories of the grey console that I got for Christmas of '95. Rayman was my first game along with of course Demo 1 and my version had Loaded, NBA Jam, Destruction Derby, Battle Arena Toshinden and videos for, among others, JumpingFlash.
I love the Snes Launch lineup so much, So many fantastic games were released.
My Saturday night pre-bed ritual wouldn't be complete without a fresh 'Sack. 🤍

Memory cards were genius and I loved them. It meant you could have as many saves as you liked and it made it easy to bring your save to a friend's house and vice versa. Much better than network cloud save garbage of today
I remember spending countless hours to unlock everything in tekken 3. Went to a friends house so we can play with everything unlocked. Just to find out that i have forgotten my memory card at home lol. The frustration was real lol.

Ridge Racer must have inspired custom soundtracks in later games with the popping the CD out to have your own tunes
When Dreamcast launched, I had reserved mine with a copy of Soul Calibur. That game got so much play from me and my friends that I don't think the disc was ever actually stored in the jewel case for the first 2 months.
My favorite launch was the GameCube's in Europe/Germany.
I had Sonic Adventure 2, Super Smash Bros Melee and Luigi's Mansion.
Great stuff.
PS4 had the worst launch lineup of any mainstream console.

Maybe I was a little too young or maybe we were a little too poor in my district, but I can't remember anyone in my school talking about the playstation at its launch. We didn't notice it until the likes of Tomb Raider or Crash Bandicoot were released. Most of us still played the SNES or the Megadrive in 1997.
I was an adolescent in the USA at the time. I was practically totally unaware of the PlayStation until Fall 1997. That's pretty bad when you consider that I knew about the 3DO, the Saturn and even the Jaguar at the time. But when a friend of a friend showed us his PSX, I was really impressed. And the marketing for FFVII was huge.
Growing up I didn't even know the Neo Geo was a thing. I was completely unaware of it, until later on in life when I finally heard about it on the internet. I never recalled seeing it in any stores, and honestly don't remember seeing it in any game mags. Guess I just always overlooked it 🤷♂️

I'm also an easy lay for parallax scrolling, and the opening scene to SimCity on the SNES (11:55) had me gushing from withers to brisket back in the day.
N64 was my personal favorite. Launched a few days before my birthday and everyone at school somehow knew i had one.

I didn't know the neo geo was technically 16 bit until this video. I remember thinking, "so many bits..." when the arcade machines had that "24 bit" intro.
I would love to know more about where the ASCII pad from the intro came from. I had one exactly like that a long time ago

28:52 I knew I’ve heard that voice somewhere else...YEAH the B52’s guy. That was GOLD! Also among my first PSone games: Wipeout and Mortal Kombat 3. For the N64 Goldeneye and Star Wars Shadow of the Empire. For the SEGA GENESIS Streets of Rage 2 was and still is my favorite game of that console. Such an amazing era that was!
