      @nbarealtalker If could be a mistake, wrong address or whatever, it is still a civil issue unless done with malice. That is something that would have to be proven. Regardless, if the equipment in question is rented, the owner can recover it. It can't arbitarily be siezed by the house occupant, it is not their property and they have no authority to do so.

    In Ontario it is easier to sue the police in small claims court. Although the damages are only up to $35,000.
    Still it will pay for the man's driveway.

    If the police didn't have such fragile ego's and there was oversight over law enforcement as a whole, maybe jurisdictions would communicate more and things like wouldn't happen with more information being dispersed to various law enforcement agencies. Criminals have exploited the regional nature and 'respect-my-authority' ego's of policing for far too long'. All you have to do as a criminal is cross a regional boundary and suddenly your crimes aren't worth the police's time because it would require co-ordination, paper-work and for them to humble themselves enough to approach another division.
    This is how auto theft proliferated, and when police temporarily swallowed their pride, they were able to save 598 stolen cars from being exported.

    So we where is the update on any charges for the scammer? And why was their truck and trailer not towed away if it's coming back unknown? That means they have an inside person who works for a car dealership or ministry, how exactly do you have a vehicle w no attachment to an owner on the road? And when they reported the roller stolen they should have been arrested, 50% chance they are from Brampton.

    It's everywhere not just there. In my city the police won't even come out to help a stalking victim living in our apartment building. Had another issue with a fraud case, and the police wanted me to deliver the evidence to the police station..
    Yet if if it don't stop for 3 seconds at a stop sign i get a $230.00 ticket..
    We have a new $65,000,000 police station a fleet of new police vehicles and we get no policing....

    A dispute between a home owner and a construction/paving company is a civil matter, not a criminal matter, so the police have no business being involved. Homeowner should hire a lawyer and sue the police.

      The homeowner holding the roller as collateral is a crime though. It's not a civil matter. What if that roller was rented and the rental company was the one picking it up? Most fraudulent construction companies use rented machinery.

      The criminals called the cops on the homeowner and had him arrested. Because he'd called the cops, the homeowner had evidence that he was the victim of fraud. Lucky that he had already called them and was listed on the fraud case as a victim.

    This happened in Perth Ontario last year - you couldn't even talk to them. I don't know what company it was but I said no but they came anyway. I stood at my driveway and wouldn't budge. They asked again and I told them to hit the road. Neighbours who got work done - their driveway looked like hell.
