I live in Barcelona. The tourism model is nost sustainable. We dont want it. You may disagree with the forms or strategies of protesting, but one thing is clear, we are being affected by this model, it is a nuisance to those of us who live here and people need to get some rest and not travel as much. There is an existential anxiety in this empty life that apparently drives people for an endless search of the new. It is pathological and when you consider that as a visitor you have an impact on the place that you visit, it should become clear that you are not only affecting positively your life by rtraveling but that your leisure has negative effects on our daily lives. We would rather have less people come and visit and develop an economic model that does not depend on tourism and that impoves tourism. In order to improve tourism, we have to balance the interests of certain social classes who are benefitted by the moneis tourists leave in the territory and the economic interests of businesses and of the city to maintain a proper permanent residents. The type of tourists who come here are cheap, mostly uneducated, do not have any visitor ethics, leave a huge amount of externalities (costs which are not taken into account and for WE the permanent residents have to pay for through our taxes), and are not even respectful of the local residents. We have this same problem in Puerto Rico, my place of origin, and over there we do not depend on tourism quite as much as in Spain. Spain needs to change its tourism model and stop marketing its tourism as a cheap destination for people to get drunk and eat subpar food bereft completely of all of its authenticity.

With that came more crime and violence, more drugs, higher prices, foreign investment and I don't recognize the city anymore. It looks like a themed park. That's the problem of most tourists that travel here. They come because now it's "cool" to come to Portugal and take pictures to post on social media, they don't know anything about the culture and prefer to go to Starbucks than local business, they are too loud, they go on little trains, tuk tuk's, bikes and normal people that need to work, take a long time to get to places, because of so much people here. This is the current situation in Lisbon as well, people are done! Our governments are indeed who we should protest agains't primarily, but this is still good though to bring awareness to the tourists themselves as well. People are desperate! Responsible travel is a thing, Barcelona has been knowingly plagued by over-tourism for decades now, which is why people like me stay away from it. So the question is what's wrong with the people who, in also knowing that, continue to go? You can't keep telling us to be mad only at our governments when there is also an obvious lack of responsibility and accountability on your side. Just why do people keep visiting places that are known to be exhausted of over-tourism? What is the point exactly of walking through crowded streets and staying in over-priced accommodation?! To a sane person doing that is senseless. So don't jerk off your own lack of common sense and accountability just because the governments of these countries are also to blame, 'cause facts are that it all starts and ends with you, and the fact that you are the ones who keep choosing to travel to over-crowded places where you are no longer wanted by the locals. It's very easy to put everything on governments and not look at our own behavior and how it creates and contributes to most of the evils of this world. It's time to grow up, and stop looking for escape goats for our own reckless, selfish, self-serving, immature behavior.

Selfish and shameless people speak to u r government or protest giving warning, how can citizens spill water on customers and there food. Shame
How uncouth, disgraceful, disrespectful.??
Allow their wish to come true. Let’s see how long they can last without tourism!
La Unión Europea nos obligó a cerrar mucha industria y agricultura y solo nos dejan el turismo y USA nos obligó a entrar en la OTAN sin pedir nada a cambio .
You are right, we all know very well that Barcelona has only existed for the last 100 years exclusively because of tourists..
Nah I'm going to Spain in September
Tour to barcelona cancelled 🎉
@@maddogsenglishmen8020And they don't want you there.
What a joke these people because without tourists your city will die under high taxes
?????????? Taxes in Europe are national. I live in Italy. People that live in non-turistic citisies can affort a lot more than who live in a touristic one. Nobody here can afford for exemple to live in the center of Florence or Rome...If you walk in Florence you will met only tourists!
Reminds me of when Uber was introduced to London and black cab drivers went protesting for something they couldn’t provide. Barcelona lives on 90% tourist income. About €10billion a year and the locals instead of heading to their local government they are attacking actual tourists. Catalans never cease to amaze!
It seems they always find a reason to embarrass themselves...
These are same people who vacation to other countries qnd stays in an airbnb. Bunch of hypocrites
Indeed. I ran an AirBnB biz in Marrakech and most of my guests were from Spain.
Can't believe they are allowing those stupid people to attack the tourists.... And Catalunya wants to be an independent country with this kind of behavior ? Uh, yeah, right!
Seems as if the ethos of Catalunya has turned collectively demented. They seem to hate everything and everybody.
Am sure they would love it if Catalans were treated the same elsewhere.
Yeah, lock up the poor that protest and protect the foreign elites traveling. This is what’s best. Pfffft
This could seems extreme but when you cannot find anymore a flat because there is so much airbnb instead of long term rent, when the cost of water and water treatment is multiplied by 5 because of the volume of water used by thousands of of tourists in your town which needs new system of water treatment, when you have noises night and day because tourist are there for having fun, when international companies are running the hotels so the money will not be for your own country, when everyday you have tourists spoiling your town sometimes you can be fed up with that…..
That's a local government problem not a tourism problem. Your problem is the government doesn't care about you. The tourists aren't causing the issue
I'm okay with spending my money in another country or in my own country. Tourists should have a census to respect their wishes and see what happens.
These people are digging their own graves : the city of Barcelona lives from tourism !!!
🤦♀️ yes! Please keep saying that, and let us be.
@@SpanishHag Will then the population of Barcelona stay at home, and not visit other cities/countries..🤔😳😉
There is Hanok village in SKorea. Hanok is traditional old Korea house. The tourists visit the residential area and walk around the sub division while residents live there. Residents have to live with nuisances, no privacy. The shopping stores nearby make all the money, not the residents who own the houses. Some tourists pee, poop, trash all kinds. How about that..
@@OctPSfever Are you saying that the tourists who come from all over the world poop, pee etc in the streets of Barcelona ???
Of course they do not ! Let’s keep to the subject, and not bring in issues that perhaps happen on the other side of side of the globe!
Again my question : will the Barcelona population in return not visit other cities, if tourists now avoid Barcelona ??? I think NOT !!! 😉
@@OctPSfeverif they go to the bathroom in the streets then it’s I’m pretty sure it’s the Chinese.
Wow,I work in a casino spa in Las Vegas, without tourists we are toast..
Spanish Government is to be blamed here, not the tourists. Their government should have safeguards so that the prices of housing will still be affordable for the locals even though there are lots of tourists.
Law of supply and demand at work, with greedy landlords taking advantage of. It's just a case of overtourism and the dangers thereof.
You right. But there is always a bunch of cavemen livin in every country who somehow cant see the obvious and end up taking it out on the nextbest target..... Most spanish folks should be smart enough to realize the problem gets fixed by simply addressing the government directly + harshly, instead of harassing people who show genuine interest in their country and leave their holiday money there. I cant imagine taking my issues out on random folks on the streets in such a childish way on top. It is a matter of basic respect.
@@ronnelacido1711Tourism is very important in the economy. It was not a problem. The problem is the lack of Gov't regulations and safeguards.
Good. Speaking as an American, protect your nation, protect your way of life, nevermind how the press makes you look. Keep it up.
"Tourists: Go Home" is the exact DEFINITION of "tourist." We, in fact, will go home. After we finish the vacation we paid for!

@@saregama-r8td then they need to tell their government not the tourist
@@snehalganvir They are going straight to the source of the problem. Over tourism is killing off a lot of small islands, the climate and wildlife. Since when do governments listen. Perhaps tourists can grow a brain and stop being so selfish and support the locals.
@@saregama-r8td Then their government shouldn't be giving out visas and charging tourists for it. This is just a country failing to maintain order among its residents.
Well said😂
I hope people in Spain don’t travel to other countries.
Why spray water on tourist?
They need to take their complaint to their government, so their government can refuse VISA to tourists when a cap is reached 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Exactly, if your gonna be rude to tourists in your country, what makes you think that you visiting their country, they won’t do the same to you.
Well many tourists don't need a visa to visit. Many are from other European countries
Most Spaniards stay within their own country. A good tourist would know that ?

Ironic.... European countries don't like being invaded lmao
Throughout all this talk of immigration and boarder control I’ve been fascinated by the hypocrisy of Europeans. After going around the entire world and colonising it, now they don’t want anyone on their “precious” continent.

Perhaps the citizens need to protest the governments for not sharing the profits and overcharging citizens.
How is this the tourists fault?
Shame! Tourists should be warned before they make travel arrangement to go there. The US & other famous travel destinations will be happy to welcome tourists.
And even if they did, it wouldn't still make a difference. Such ethical changes are unexpected and unpredictable no matter.
Come to Colorado where you're not a tourist you're a welcome guest
I live in Maine and I feel exactly the same.
They are saying that this is new, but as an American, I traveled for a month with a Spanish family throughout Spain. Valencia, Madrid and Badajoz. On the way home we stopped in Barcelona only because my German aunt and uncle happened to be there on vacation. I was shocked. Barcelona was NOTHING like the rest of Spain. This was in 1979, when I was 19 years old and really ignorant. One big tourist trap.. and they are only protesting now? Even then I thought.. this is not the real Spain... I lived in Europe for 13 years, traveled quite a bit and learned that the poorest people were the most generous and kind. Now that I am old.. I would say that visiting Barcelona is like a visit to Vegas and thinking that is America. 😢
Great analogy!
They even want independence from Spain.
Thanks for the good insight
True.poorest are the most generous
Spanish is a language. The people are called Spaniards.
Their beef should be with the government policies and real estate investors. Now, say goodbye to tourists and jobs.
All tourists should leave Barcelona now without paying their bills!
I’m from Ireland, tourism is a massive income for my country and we see all nationalities come and go all of the time including Spanish people.
Imagine if I complained about too many tourists 🤣🤣 it’s what makes the city come alive.
Europe should show this attitude to the immigrants
I understand their inconvenience but that can’t justify them spitting water to “tourists”.?!
What inconvenience u can have by the tourism industry? They're paying for everything. Besides Barcelona is on world map because of tourism

I must say... I went to Paris last summer and was TERRIBLE! I felt so bad for the locals. We could see how bad the massive tourism was harming their lives and routine. I promised to myself that I wouldn't go back there.
I experienced this as a tourist several years back. Spain is not a welcoming place whatsoever and i was thrilled when we left. Too much hostility and overt racism, just craziness. Portugal was amazing and the people so warm and welcoming.

totally agree. The Portuguese are so lovely. Spaniards ? not so much.
I know what you mean about the negativity in Spain. I visited there some years ago and was glad to leave to go to Portugal, which was a joy and where I spent a considerable amount of my vacation money.
They’re just mad they’ll never be able to leave the city. Residents are miserable and unhappy no matter what. So upset at the tourists but they won’t go after those responsible.
I totally agree, indigenous people r often too laid back imo
I dont know ive heard the Spanish just like the French arent very welcoming to tourists. Even though they recieve so many tourists. Maybe tourism is just increasing?
@@1988vikable then they should make more tourist places in their countries so they can divert foot traffic. but this is not the way. weird people.
the whole point is that they're being forced out of the city due to tourism raising rent prices wtf are you talking about😭
Ae you stupid?!
Would they like us to do this to them in the USA?
