Rv flooring change (problem solving flush floor slide-out)

  • I ran into a small roadblock while remodeling/updating our Class A rv. After removing the carpet I realized that my flush floor slide-out actually slid on the carpeting and once the carpet was removed, the flange on the slide-out would hit and push my new vinyl flooring. I couldn’t find any specific tips for the problem I ran into so I used a couple tips from fellow rv’ers and came up with a solution. I decided to record my experience and pass on any tips that might possibly help someone with a similar problem. My wife and I are currently in the process of making changes to our rv. I will be following up with a general remodel video as well as area specific videos. Give us a Like, comment and subscribe,

i had exact same problem, those screws that you screwed back will get loose again due to a a movement of the rig when you will be traveling. the best way is to remove those complete since they are no longer needed as they were holding carpet down. or at least put some epoxy glue so screws will stay in place. raising that plank will help, but flush slideout moves in and out in waive shape so when you pull the slide in it will start leaning down and put marks or even scratch the floor. we ended up using slideout sliders to prevent the damage to the new floor

Thank you for this video! I'm currently trying to install plank flooring on a Fleetwood Bounder with a flush slide, and I'm having the same issues - the slide pushing or bowing the flooring. I do not have a transition piece, but now I'm thinking I should install one.

What a pain in the ass!!!! I want to replace the flooring in my 2009 Winnebago View. But I'm starting to think it has that classic original look 😂

It was a pain in the ass but worth it in the long run. We got the look we wanted. The hardest part was actually finding tips on how to access the termination strip. I was able to put others ideas from a couple videos to use. That’s why I decided to post the video, I figure it may help others. Good luck. It has now been a year and everything is still holding up.

Thank you for making this video. I have the same type of slide and trying to put in LVP and could not find anyone except you that has figured out the level slide issue. Two questions: Why did you use a thin strip of flooring as a shim instead of using a full plank? Why did you drill holes through the black transition trim on the edge of the slide flooring?

I hope this video was helpful. I had the same issue, I couldn’t find any videos for tips and thought I would record my process. Answer to your first question , I really wasn’t sure at that point where I was going to start my floors. I suppose running a full plank would work. I drilled holes in the black transition because the screws were not straight in and I couldn’t get proper leverage with the angle attachment. Good luck with your project,

I am try to do this exact floor, with the same slide as you have. How has this held up? And before installing the floor did your slider sink down?

Hello Ryan. Our slider did drop down and became virtually flush. Before starting, I didn’t realize that the slide actually slid on the carpet and then dropped into the transition trim. I put down a couple rows of flooring to test the slide and saw that the slide pushed the flooring. That’s when I decided to jack and block up the slide and shim up the transition piece so the new plank floor would tuck under it. The floor has now been in it for 1-1/2 yr and it’s holding up great. We use a couple pieces of thin FRP ( 1 @ the front edge 1@ the back edge of the slide) as floor protection when closing the slide. It was well worth the time invested. Good luck on your project.

I realize that this is an older vid but, I'll bet the slide scratched the new flooring when retracted. And, the change of the height in the slide "ramp" can cause other problems with the Store More type of slide. The Author of the video only did half of the flooring work by not telling or demonstrating the replacement of the "glide shoe" which is mounted on the bottom of the slide and can scratch the flooring when retracting. When changing from original carpet to vinyl or laminate, you have to remove the plastic and metal "shoe" and replace it with a carpeted one to center the slide and prevent scratches. You have to compensate for the spacing difference between the carpet and planks.

I appreciate your input KD. I wish I could have found some information like this when I did the project. However, I didn’t, so I chose to take my chances and do what I did. I do have to clarify that I did not mislead anyone in this video. I did not replace the glide shoe on the underside of the slide because I didn’t know it was an option. The thickness of our flooring compared to the old carpet didn’t seem to be enough to worry about. Secondly, by shimming the interior slide trim, I believe it helped compensate any height differences. Lastly, I chose to put 1 piece of FRP (solid plastic sheeting) as a glide.strip, at either end of the slide when we close the slide to protect the floor. It’s been about 1-1/2 yr since we’ve done this and have used the slide a few dozen times and haven’t had any problems. Keeping my fingers crossed. I chose to post this video to possibly help others with ideas for their projects. As I said earlier, I searched high and low for videos to help me when I ran into this roadblock and I couldn’t find any that directly worked for my situation. I did find a few that triggered ideas for me and that’s what helped . That is why I posted my video , just as a possible aide for others.

I have a solution for getting the slide to clear the new vinyl plank flooring. How can I share some pictures of what I did.

Good Morning. How has the floor worked out. Would you do it again. Jack

It has worked out very well, and yes, I would do it again. We spend a lot of time camping by the beach. It makes it so much easier to clean the floors.

I have a flush slide on one side and a raised on the opposite side of my Motor Home. for the flush slid it looks to be very similar to yours. How did you know where to place the bottle jacks so it didnt tweak the slide?

I had seen a video of someone who did something similar to their camper slide. I kept the jacks a little inside the center of the slide and on the outside edge where the walls intersect. I put 2x4’s on the underside of the slide to protect it and to disperse the pressure of the jack. By putting the jacks in thar spot , the top of the slide would still be resting against the inside. I then jacked up each side about 1/4” at a time. My thought was , the slide rails are fastened to the the slide so the slide won’t shift in or out. Good luck with your project.

I placed them at the outside corner where the floor and walls come together.

Do you have an update on how it is after a few months. We just took out carpet and having the same problem. But our plastic pieces have broke off.

Honestly, I don’t. We finished remodeling our Rv late in the fall and winterized it before being able to take it out. My plan is to review it after a full season of use.

    • @beginthervdream4535
      @beginthervdream4535  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, i used blocks and bottle jacks @ each end to give myself a little working room to tighten the screws which were holding the carpet trim. The carpet was terminated in a trim and when i pulled the carpet out, the screws became loose.
