How to Prevent a Wet RV Slide Out Floor - UPDATED

  • How to install an RV Slide Out Ski. I accidentally discovered that slide out floor was soggy. I looked on the roof and the sides for bad sealant but it wasn't the problem. The water was wicking up into the floor from the sides of the slide out because there isn't a properly engineered drip edge on this type of slide out. This is apparently a industry-wide problem. Nearly every RV I walked by today has this same design; regardless of the initial cost of the RV. Shame on the RV Manufacturers for designing a product to FAIL! This is Engineered to Fail!. There can't be another explanation. Two pieces of plastic that likely cost pennies could prevent Hundreds of dollars in repairs and down-time. How about installing the slide skis when you manufacture the RV or design a better product in the first place. Again, this is not a Forest River or Prime Time problem alone; IT IS INDUSTRY-WIDE!
    I was unable to locate the slide out skis or skids online. You can call my dealer direct and possibly order the parts. You will need a left and right side. They are different!

    Worked on hundreds of rvs in my job. Biggest thing to prevent rot/water damage is keep any rv under shelter like a carport if you want longevity. This video will help but won't stop water altogether. I would add that you should put sealant on the threads of EVERY screw before reinstalling the trim piece. Nearly every rv I've taken apart, the exterior screws were rusted and nearly gone from water wicking in. Starts off small and then causes huge problems. Your marker lights and every screw outside is prob not sealed. Water seeks the path of least resistance and ANY small hole created by a screw of staple is an opportunity

    Thank you SO much. We are currently replacing our SECOND slide out floor due to rot and mold. This time it is in our bedroom. Tore it apart yesterday. ALL of our slides are like this. I will have to order skis for all of them. This should be an upgrade option at the dealer when you purchase a $70K unit. I have lost all respect for the dealers and the service people. Something this simple, and even a $1000 upgrade if they wanted to be jerks about it, could save so much time and money and inconvenience. Thank you, again.

      I have a 2016 forest river that has come with these slide skis. But they installed them with sheet metal screws into the wood flooring. The screws pulled through and created mold in all 4 of my slides. Complete remodel in progress now due to manufacture not knowing the difference between sheet metal screws and wood screws

    I called Bayou Outdoor and left a message with the parts department about the skis. It took a couple of days but Jeff Luithle called me back. He said Part numbers 10F16045A AND 10F16050A
    are no longer good numbers but he knew what I wanted. Got them ordered over the phone and had them the next day. I ordered 3 sets. A friend of mine (another lady) helped me install them. Very easy to install thanks to your video. Already got one set installed two more sets to go after the holiday. The new part number on my reciept is 20X53357A at $25.90 a set. So lucky to have found this. Also own a Prime Time Mfg. LaCrosse with the exact same slide setup. I’ve had water leakage that caused staining to the interior carpet but thankfully no subfloor softness. For 2018 models, PTM installed the skis. But after watching your video I inspected closer and noticed the rear slide ski had a 1/2 inch horizontal crack where water was getting in, running along the inside of the ski base, and touching either a staple or screw, causing the rust colored leak on the carpet. I used a rubber sealant to seal the crack and will see whether it stops the water; but if not I know exactly what to order and how to replace on this model. Thanks!!!

    I just bought a '06 Four Winds Express and found that the slide-out was constructed the exact same way. My slide out didn't even have polymax over the edge like yours does. The OSB had soaked up so much water on the edges that the floor would have eventually given out. I ultimately decided to replace the floor after cutting out the damaged edges and realizing I couldn't patch the floor but had to replace the entire thing. My fiancee, two jacks, and I were not able to get it into place by ourselves. We successfully set the replacement floor in yesterday with the help of some family and friends. Now I just need to buy the proper trim for these edges!

    Boy what a great heads up. Ill check my Rig tomorrow for this detail. You kind of wonder with all the RV sales out there this industry has their heads where the sun doesn"t shine. It just takes slowing down a little and doing the job correctly. I have a new Rockwood and boy does it have a job quality issue, this isnt rocket science and rv's have been around a long time...just do it correctly. Had a 95 Airstream and that rig was a pretty darn good unit, but it had a few OOPS, the bulkhead was installed and they crushed the heater vent to the bathroom (chilly) so I had to remove the oven, climb in the opening and recut the bulkhead larger for the vent....wah - la heat. Frustrating. Thanks for the video JPCS, big help

    There is another way to protect that area: get a tube of Geocel ProFlex clear sealant. It’s available on Amazon. Get a cup of water and add a squirt of dish soap. Now, apply the ProFlex to the bottom inch of the slide out, extending to one inch under the slide out. Dip your fingers in the soapy water and smooth the ProFlex so it forms a continuous thin layer over the slide out edge. Let dry. You now have a hard protective coating that the water will run off, straight down, and that will last for many years.

    I was an RVTech for 30 years, I'm now retired. All RV's leak from the day they roll off the assembly line, some more than others. The slide ski will keep most of the water from collecting in the underpinning of the slide-out, but the water that has collected in there will never completely dry out, and will continue to rot the bottom of the slide-out. I have removed and replaced the floors on hundreds of slide-out rooms. Keep in mind and beware... that black mold grows on rotting wood.

About a week after the first bad rain storm, something had fallen behind the couch. When I pulled the couch out, to my horror was a drenched and moldy carpet! My first thought was worrying that my brother would be disappointed in me and that I was ungratefully tearing up his RV. I got a wet/dry shop vac and have diligently cleaned this area after every storm, all the while trying to find out where the water is entering. The second you pointed out the design flaw, my jaw dropped! 🤬🤬 It looks EXACTLY LIKE the slide out I’m dealing with! I’m getting the skis ASAP to finish the slide out like it should have been done by the manufacturer! 🚋🎿 Thank you so so much for posting this video! I know there is water damage. To secure the ski; The ski came with a good 3m two sided tape attached to the floor side of the ski. However not thinking that was enough I put a bead of RV caulking on the skis floors outer edge and in the inner corner to make stay and to prevent any moisture travel. I would reframe from adding Gorilla Tape to the outer edge as it may get ripped off as you bring in the slide on the slides inner skid plates.

    Wat happens when ur slide out can't slide out?

    • @JustPlainCommonSense
      @JustPlainCommonSense  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't had that problem. It could be a number of things such as an electrical fault or an obstruction, tracks misaligned... If you are pushing the button and nothing happens (no noise at all) you can put it in bypass mode and get it moving. You have to look around and find the slide controller and follow the instructions on it. The controllers are hidden well! I have one on the floor under the kitchen sink and one under the floor of the closet. Find the manual for your brand of slide out system and it should help.Good luck!

    A cheap way to prevent this is to buy some 3m low residue tape for long stays or painters tape for week or less stays and apply it along the bottom it not noticeable and I do this and it make a good drip edge so water doesn’t run under slide floor, just place a note on your slide control button to remove before sliding it in

    I know this is quite late. But our Slide out had a similar leak. Thinking it must be the windows. I removed the side window.. and nothing, I made the decision to remove the inner side panels. and immediately seen the issue. when the mfd assembled the slideout. they used drill tip screws. not only along the bottom but al the way up the sides too. I would guess 50% of them leaked. (having done several leak tests before and after) I replaced every #10 black headed drill tip screw with #12SS wood screws. also inserted a little liquid butyl in each hole. I did this on all 5 of my slideouts. Now? I can rest at night. YMMV. -Sam

      Yet another way for water to slip in! Great info. You need to do a video about that!!

  • @retiredandrollin

    Pardon my ignorance, buuut let me see if I have this correct. So they have a part to correct a problem, obviously acknowledging that a problem exist, but they don't go ahead and instal it from factory or correct the design flaw? Are you serious, and I mean that rhetorically. What industry does that? This is incredible. Thank you so much for bringing awareness.
    While I'm shopping for my rig to hit the road almost full time, how can I tell by just looking, if the rig I'm considering will experience such an issue?

    • @JustPlainCommonSense
      @JustPlainCommonSense  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Retired and ROLLIN' take a spray bottle and perform the test I did on the video. If water droplets collect on the bottom of the floor then you can bet the water will wick into the floor

      That is really unbelievable. I know these things are kind of thrown together but to just leave a problem that would be SO easy to fix as they're building is just ridiculous. And nobody knows for 2 years til the floor is almost ruined? I think they like making money on the repairs.
      Super glad to see the quick, cheap fix.

      katphyre if I only knew about it earlier I’d have been ok. It is just plain wrong to build in a “programmed failure” like this.

      I have been a full-timer for years now and been through several manufacturers. From an engineering and build standpoint, almost the entire RV industry is a bad joke. I was up in the Elkhart region last year just looking around since I had been hearing excitement about some newer brands and plans, etc., but I came away unwilling to spend a dime on the ridiculous garbage they are pumping out up there as fast as they can go. Those poor Amish / Mennonite workers that the manufacturers champion aren't able to do a stitch of work in the manner they normally do for themselves and others--they are purely servants of the big manufacturers' determinations, demands, and margins. It cracked me up to see the "extreme thermal" package sticker on the side of the coach in this video and then for the slide floor to not even be sealed on the outside by design. That's exactly the kind of thing that fills the industry top to bottom, especially the claims about R values from reflective foil that defy physics, etc. The only exceptions are at the very high end and the commercial / cargo trailer units that are customized for industrial use in Alaska and Canada, etc., but those are built elsewhere. Both consumers and workers can only end up disgusted like this.

      So what do we do? Wed love to full time but we'd need to buy a rig and a truck. Our current unit is a pop-up trailer so we have no experience and will probably need a toy hauler for accommodations (4-5 adults plus office space for 2). Do we just buy the one that meets the majority of our needs knowing that we'll have to stay on top of upgrades and maintenence? Is there any brand that seems better than another. Heartland has a great Floorplan, but do they just build garbage? Feeling discouraged.

      Chris Martinez I didn’t post the window insulation video I made a few years ago. Can’t recall why. Go to Lowe’s or order from Amazon double bubble reflective foil insulation. I rarely take it off because it is so effective at blocking the outside temperature!
      Double Bubble Reflective Foil Insulation: (48 in X 10 Ft Roll) Industrial Strength, Commercial Grade, No Tear, Radiant Barrier Wrap for Weatherproofing Attics, Windows, Garages, RV's, Ducts & More! … www.amazon.com/dp/B07G63TCQM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_W5B9Cb7BT6YJZ
      Note: this is only a 10’ roll. Don’t order this one! I get mine from Lowe’s because a large roll is way cheaper than off Amazon but the same type product.

      Chris Martinez the window insulation panels are cut with scissors the size that would make them stay in place inside the window frame. Just shove the edges into the gap around the window. The 24” roll is likely the correct width already so you just need to cut them the correct length
