    Don’t mistake the sound as it’s bad on cold days. The fluid has to get warm and on cold starts could make some noise as long as it’s silent when turning the wheel it should be okay. Also sometimes the fluid gets dirty or you could have a leak and dirty or low fluid can cause noise too. So before you buy a new pump try changing the fluid first or check for leaks.

      How refreshing... I just asked my wife to sit in the car and turn the wheel to left and then right lock so I could hear if the steering was faulty. She said "That's men's stuff" and refused ! It's HER car too ! She is so un-mechanical; she struggles with house door locks and screams when she sees a mouse too... Decent chubbies though...

    Good video. Quick note: You can't hear outside noise in any Lexus they're really sealed tight. And also if your power steering fluid reservoir keeps disappearing and or if you smell burning outside the car the pump is bad.

    • @DaylyDriverDayly
      @DaylyDriverDayly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      true they are very quiet from inside. doesnt mean the pump is bad, the burning smell can be from multiple things leaking and being burned on the exhaust or other hot areas of the engine. there would more than likely be a bad leak which would starve the pump of fluid causing it to overheat and wear out over time

      could be the fluid type you are using during the winter months. especially living in a cold area you should use specific power steering fluid made for the cold weather. what's happening is the fluid isn't flowing through the system because the car is soo cold. when it heats up the fluid is able to flow through the system

    I've heard if the steering wheel is crooked significantly, it is certainly a problem w/power steering rack (as far as I understand the problem can't be fixed then just by simply moving in and out Outer Tie Rods in corresponding directions). Mine is crooked ~45 degrees to the right, no steering fluid leeks observed (I saw some fluid inside of the boot ~ 8 months ago, when changed Inner TR (on driver side only, on passenger it was dry), but I think it is very small, since the fluid level doesn't change). I don't remember when that problem w/crooked wheel developed, I don't drive that car a lot, but I hit a limiting concrete bar which they conveniently locate at some parking lot 4-5 days ago, and noticed 45 degrees after that event. So what can happen to a steering rack, what can be wrong, if no leak observed?
    The car is 2003 Chevy Cavalier. Thank you very much for the informative film.

      @@DaylyDriverDayly Thank you. I recently noticed that the wider part of the boot got disconnected fm the Rack, there was a damaged and crooked over a metal clamp inside of the Rack opening. Since the boot was turned ~180 degrees, I suspect that the mechanic didn't remove the small ring-clamp on the boot during alignment and the boot was torn and he didn't noticed it. Anyway I replaced the boot via disconnecting the Inner and Outer TRs with the original firm boot. The one I has before was soft ACDelco boot. Probably I didn't attached the clamp tight enough and all that happened during alignment. I'll go to dealer anyway for another alignment (since put new tires) and double check w/them. • @DaylyDriverDayly
      @DaylyDriverDayly  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      nothing usually unless there isn't enough steering fluid going through it that can cause it to wear out to wear out fast. the problem is more than likely a bad power steering hose, a seal or the reservoir. they dont go bad in the morning, it's the fact that if the fluid isn't heated up when you start it on a cold morning it takes a minute for the fluid to get flowing through the system. that's why you may hear a whining sound on some mornings when you start the car. dowsnt mean the pump is bad

    My car whines when I first start it up when the engine is cold. As soon as the gauge reaches the middle it stops whining but still whines when I turn the wheel. Wheel turns easily though as long as I keep fluid in the car (has a leak causing me to have to put in about 3 ounces every few days).

    • @DaylyDriverDayly
      @DaylyDriverDayly  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you probably have a bad power steering line or hose that needs to be replaced. It could be that the pump is being starved of fluid due to the leak causing it to whine. Ive had this stuttering noise in an e36 which eventually became a whine then a growling noise, same thing in a daughters Ford Festiva.
      after swapping out the front wheel bearings in the festiva the noises were gone and the front end felt much better.
      Im about to do this on the e36, before that though I'll replace the fluid (pump out and re-fill 3 times with turning of the wheel lock to lock between each refill to flush out old fluid) first to see if that makes a difference and check the steering knuckle for excessive wear or seizure.

    Question: I definitely have a steering issue with my BMW e30, but I can't yet determine where the problem is. So I'm trying to figure whether it is or isn't the pump.
    Thanks for the video...very helpful.
    In my case, there's no strange or noticeable noise coming from the front at all. Fluid in the reservoir seems full and clean (but I can't recall ever servicing or have changed the fluid...).
    A garage dude who is supposed to know these cars intimately, feels certain that my pump is bad...that it does run, but doesn't circulate any fluid. He said he knows that because he took the lid off the fluid reservoir with the engine running, and it should be easy to see the fluid circulating...he says that in mine, there's no visible fluid movement at all, so case closed.
    But is this a valid explanation ? You do not mention this alleged symptom in the video.
    There's no pump noise, no signs of leaking, no whining when turning the wheel, reservoir is full and clean.
    I'm thinking its something other than the pump....??

    • @DaylyDriverDayly
      @DaylyDriverDayly  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if the power steering belt is turning than the pump should be working. if not, the reservoir can get clogged and not allow fluid to flow through which can then starve the pump of fluid and cause it to fail. if there is no pressure in the system like you say is seemingly the case I would check the power steering lines as well. it could just be the pump that needs replacing. it doesnt always leak when bad. I believe it could just be a bad pump or reservoir

My question is if I need to replace the rack too. I know it would be a good idea, but I don’t have the money to replace the rack too unless it won’t solve the initial problem (no power steering at very low speed, constant whine, jittery steering). Im thinking maybe air and debris is getting into the PS rack, which might cause the pump to go bad?

So while I'm waiting my turn in line a light on the dashboard turns on and the steering wheel stiffens up. So of course I go into a panic and get through the wash and everything managed to drive it back home ok. Although, turning and trying to shift gears was a little interesting. So I got home checked and the fluid level was fine. I ran my hand down the hose and it was quite filthy so I assume a leak is coming from somewhere. This is a 2011 Mazda 3. The steering is never hard to turn and the reservoir is never low. I have a 2015 Infiniti Q70L that requires an ATF fluid. My power steering pump randomly makes noise at idle. The ATF fluid is clean and is replaced every 50,000 miles. Currently my Infiniti has 156,000 miles. I performed a vacuum test at 20 pounds of mercury and it passed the test for five minutes. Even though it’s been vacuum tested is there anyway an air pocket could be present in the system? Or is my power steering pump simply need to be replaced? Thankfully I can purchase a brand new Hitachi Power steering pump which happens to be the OEM provider for a reasonable price.

    My power steering fluid exploded all over the top of my engine (gs300) I put more ps fluid and it disappeared.. I can’t see any noticeable leaks.. where and how would it erupt like that? Does that mean pump is bad? Or a hose… or something I’m not seeing?

    Great video. My steering is very stiff but there is no whining and the fluid reservoir is full of fluid. Do you think it's the pump? Thanks.

      it could be that the reservoir is clogged and wearing out the pump. you could need a new reservoir and pump. I would have it verified by a mechanic first

    Do you have any tips for electronic power steering do you know if the 2009 vw cc has electric power steering? I have never really messed with any electric power steering units what’s a common cause of a electric power steering system with a hard to turn steering wheel ?

      It is cold here in Dallas Texas but not all THAT cold really.
      My 2009 Impala takes generic Power Steering fluid.
      Whenever I take the cap off there is a puff of pressured air that comes out.
      Today I ran it with the cap off and then added some fluid even though it looked like it didn’t need any. I haven’t driven it yet after I added the fluid, but I did turn the wheel a few times to try to cycle it through, but it still has that same whine.
      Thank you for any advice or insight you have. 🙏🏻

      You probably have a bad pump and reservoir. What happens is the filter inside the reservoir can get clogged causing the pump to wear out. I would say the pump and reservoir need to be replaced.

    Thanks for clearing this up for me. People are telling me that my pump is done but I don't have these symptoms. The only thing is there's a leak somewhere. My guess its a simple job and these liars are trying to take my money. I'm not stupid; I know if I have a bad pump my steering will be hard to turn. My check engine light goes on and off. One mechanic did a diagnostic test on it and found nothing. He reset it and said if it goes back on to see him. What do you think it might be?

    Informative... But I didn't hear you mention anything about powersteering fluid, I think when diagnosing an issue you should start with the basic things first.. Fluid level in this case, before deeming the pump defective... Just my 2 cents.. Great video tho.

    Ok, so I own a slk 350. And I can’t tell if my power steering pump is going bad and need a replacement or is it because I have low fluid on the reservoir that needs to be change. Sometime the fluid goes to the top of the reservoir cap. When I refill it sometime it turns smoothly again until it leaks again. But the leakage only coming from the bottom of the pump not sure if it’s between the reservoir and the pump. I was told that it may be a leakage/crack O-ring between that needs to be replace? I don’t mind switching the O-ring myself. But I’m not sure it’s the pump itself that’s failing... help :/

    • @DaylyDriverDayly
      @DaylyDriverDayly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would first check the lines from the reservoir and the reservoir itself. if there is fresh fluid coming from the bottom of the reservoir it may just be a hose or the clamp isn't on the hose tight. I would have someone turn the wheel back and forth while the car is running to see if you can visibly see any fluid leaking from any of the lines or from the reservoir itself. generally the lines will go bad before the pump does. what happens is the reservoir can leak due to bad lines or it can get clogged which will cause the pump to be starved of fluid which causes a whining noise when the engine is running especially when the wheel is turned. I have a video on diagnosing bad power steering hose. check it out. let me know if this helps. I am more than happy to answer any further questions you may have about the issue you are facing. thanks for reaching out👌

    • @DaylyDriverDayly
      @DaylyDriverDayly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also highly recommend having the power steering system pressure tested to accurately pin point the issue leak in the power steering system

    • @leflame91
      @leflame91 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daily Driver thank you soo much! Much helped. Here’s an updated so I check the returning hose underneath no sign of leakage after leaving my car on for 5 min turning the wheels back and forth. But I do notice there is still leakage coming from between the reservoir and pump and there’s droplets only on that area. And what you mention above was happening so it might not be tight enough or there might be a crack or clogged reservoir. I’m changing it so I’ll keep you update.

    • @DaylyDriverDayly
      @DaylyDriverDayly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leflame91 at least you are getting the issue pin pointed to the specific location. the hoses will get hard and crack over time. I'd change the hose👌
