  • The Avro Lancaster became the iconic British Heavy Bomber of the second world war, in part due to it's large bomb capacity and good performance. These two factors made it suitable for a number of unique, difficult and high-profile operations during that conflict.
    Derived from the earlier and unsuccessful Manchester medium bomber, the Lancaster went on to perform with distinction during the war, whilst also finding it's way into a number of different roles including maritime, reconnaissance, cargo transport and civilian use. Finally though, it was replaced by an updated derivative of the aircraft known as the Avro Lincoln in the mid 1950's.
    Join me in this video as I build and review the Avro Lancaster B MkI/III plastic model kit in 1/72 scale from Revell.
    The model and diorama took about 3 weeks to build, the video took a full day to edit and upload too! So this is a big one!
    This first part features the build of the Lancaster, whilst the second part will cover the build of the diorama including the creation of the base, painting the figures & scratch building the scaffold.

    For those of you wondering what an Avro Manchester is, it's a Lancaster but with only two engines. It had a very short production run, and was retired from service in 1942 as the Lancaster was an all round far better aircraft.
    Great review; looks like a fantastic kit and you finished it superbly. What a great model.

      I remember a story of a pair of mechanics watching the first Lancaster their squadron had, on approach. One grumbled 'Another Manchester!' His mate said 'Uh the Manchester has /two/ engines..' May be apocryphal but still funny :)

    • @AnthonyBrown12324
      @AnthonyBrown12324 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Manchester had 4 engines 2 in each cowling . The Vulture was 2 Peregrine engines coupled . The Peregrine engine was troublesome ( powered the Whirlwind ) but coupling them caused even more problems . Rolls Royce abandoned these engines , just not worth the trouble , when the Merlin was becoming increasingly better . Interestingly The Heinkel 177 was a similar idea to the Manchester ; using DB601s ; but the Germans persisted with it ; despite the problems of cooling etc. when adding 4 engines probably would have led to a successful aircraft .

    My first Diorama I build as a kiD was the Revell lancaster Dam Buster G for George with "Secret Bomb" that kit was a late 70's kit and thus to today's standard quite rudimentary.
    I took a shelf out of my dresser and covered it with coloured sawdust and some plaster of Paris as tarmac. Then I added the Airfix RAF figures and the RAF Airfield Rescue and Ambulance models. as well as the Airfix refuelling set. I was so proud. :D Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

    Great build - always love a Lancaster, and your results are very nice. I noticed the same thing with the rear turret falling out when I built mine - makes you realise just how exposed those guys were back there, with the turret more 'stuck on' than being an integral part of the aircraft.

    To solve the silvering problem just brush that area with Tamiya Extra thin cement. WARNING! DO NOT OVERBRUSH IT, if you do it, you it will eat the decal and ruin it,so just a tiny bit, and the silvering will vanish.....
    All in all, its just as I expected, the best kit you posted on your chanel so far: The weathering is moderate, as it should be, paint dryed incredibly well, as I can't see any brush strokes or what so ever, and you nailed the varnish work, as satin coat is the perfect choice, thus making the kit look more realistic, than it would work with a coat of dead matt varnish. I think you might just have a chance to win if you' d send this one out to some competition..... All in all a great kit, great work, worth every penny and time you spent, and diorama is just ideal for this kit... Might suggest some RAF gas truck on the grass, but, its not obligatory.... Well done Mat, you maxed it out!

    Great video of a nice looking Model there. Small point. The seat you referred to as Flight Engineer, is actually the Wireless Operator. The warmest seat on the aircraft due to it being next to the only heating outlet!
    The Engineer sat next to the pilot and the decal you applied to the right- hand fuselage is his fuel gauges.

    Great video, I've still not made my old airfix Lancaster!! I bought resin radial engines, bulged bomb bay, etc, to make a mk2 , and lovely to see all hand painting, well mostly. I too use spray cans for primer to give a nice start, and spray varnish for decals. I had the idea to keep the disused Merlin engines to make a mk2 beaufighter, which is still on the horizon...still, I've been thinking of this one for a while, so many thanks, very therapeutic to see it made the old fashioned way, cheers

      @@ModelMinutes BTW it might simplify any future Lancaster models if you leave off the bomb bay doors and make one ginormous bomb as neither Tallboy (5 ton) or Grand Slam (10 ton) would fit with the doors on :) Actually I think they left off the mid upper turret too, to save weight.

    I had one of these, originally produced in dark green plastic. It must have been from one of the very last batches to be made with Revells original moulds, because there was so much warping in the fuselage and wings, and body gaps around the engine nacelles, that it was impossible to produce even a half decent model from it. In the end I threw the whole thing away, the only model that I have ever discarded.
    This one looks to be a retooled version and is a vast improvement on what went before.

    I built the earlier version of this kit when I was a kid and later got the airfix pre-2012 kit was much better than the 60s kit. But it was still fun. I moved away from scale modelling to model railways and have been looking at giving aircraft another go, though storage is a concern for the larger planes like this.
    Great video with some useful tips. I know its a few years old now, but everything should still be relevant i think other than games workshop reformulated nuln oil recently, so anyone getting it may find it more glossy now. Army painter tones are a decent alternative.

    Very nice looking model. I'm 57 & have just finished building three starter kits after being persuaded by an old school mate to give it ago. He is the same age and more experienced at building them but it has given me something to do during lockdown. Just wondering why you hand paint rather than airbrush as your obviously extremely experienced yourself?

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! At the time of this video I did not own an airbrush - i've recently bought one and increasing my experiences with it, but I find that hand painting can get you good results if you are careful

      As mentioned in the video - the plsatikote spray varnish protects the previous layers

    Sorry for being a bit off topic, but I was using the same green paint as you and noticed that it turns into a lighter (almost yellow-green!) shade as the pot runs low. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't say I've noticed this - if you mix the paint well each time you use it it should have the same consistent colour the whole time . . .

    I built the Dambuster version. Not to this high standard but added solar lights and have suspended it 10 inches above my pond. There’s a couple of Spitfires hanging there too.

    FYI, the 2 chairs behind the pilot are for the Navigator and Wireless Operator NOT the Flight Engineer. He didn't have a permanent seat, just a folding canvas seat to the right of the pilot where he could access the fuel cocks etc. The Flight Engineer often stood for the majority of the flight.

      An airbrush was not a tool that I owned at the time I built this, plus I think it is important to show people that you don’t always need an airbrush to build models

    What paints acrylic paints would you recommend for this?

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do add a list of paints that I used at the beginning of the video around 01:17 but you can get various acrylics from different companies. Although I used Humbrol paints in this one, I have heard good things of the Tamiya, Revell, Vallejo (among others) acrylic ranges

      not really, it can happen on occasion but fortunately some places i do my modelling has soft water. I tend to use filtered water in other places that it is harder

    Bought this model today March 17th from Hobbycraft for £16.50, Yes they checked the price but it was correct , so I'm now looking forward to build my first Lancaster bomber since I was a teenager in the early 80s lol (usually build tanks but really wanted a Lanc)

    @dand9495 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great finish. I'm getting the Airfix Battle of Britain gift set for Christmas (Lancaster, two spitfires if you don't know) and I really hope it'll come out as good as this. Just one more thing: whenever I hand paint model aircraft I always struggle with evenly painting the wings as paint always gets onto the other half - can you prevent this and if so how? Thank you

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could always run some masking tape along the edge to make it neater, but I think that I mostly use the edge of the brush instead of the tip when i get to those areas so that the paint doesn't "wrap" around the edge

    Comes with Merlins. Said you used just one and kept the other for some later project. So when you didn't use the Merlin(s), what holds the exhaust stacks in place??
    Good job! I viewed this after the Airfix build vid; the detail differences are staggering. Love the the Airfix new tooling kits (esp. the B-17g. I am a Fortress nut).

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The exhausts simply glue into the nacelle - to install the engine you have to cut the sides of the cowling away so it can be seen, otherwise you just glue the exhaust to the outside as there is a moulded mounting point

    I would’ve gone for a misty clear coat before decals as decals do not adhere to matte surfaces well it needs to be smooth and glossy for a great bond and finish then you can always go over the top with satin afterwards 👌🏼, pro tip

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      satin isn't matt though . . .
