  • Building the Airfix WWII RAF Bomber Resupply Set 1/72 scale kit. This kit features a Tilly utility vehicle, a Bedford truck (with options for two different designs), a tractor, three bomb trolleys, a range of bombs, and other airfield items including scaffolding and a motorbike. You can find the kit here: amzn.to/370Fk7H
    This set is suitable for most World War 2 British airfield dioramas - I'll be using it with some of Airfix's excellent Lancaster kits in a future video.
    Just as I was finishing filming this video I received a very nice BenQ e-Reading desk lamp to review. The final part of this video wasn't enough to get a fair test of the light, so I'll be reviewing it in more detail in a future video. However, you can find out more about the lamp at the links below:

    Impressive kits for 1:72.....good old Airfix.....such an icon and still going strong after eighty years! Will be great to see them painted and a diorama forthcoming in the the future. Totally agree....I've had the BenQ for a year now and absolutely love it (a bit more expensive but worth every cent!).

    A nice set, indeed. A bit retro, I know, but the old Airfix Refuelling Set had some nice ground crew figures that could be used, and similarly, the seated figures from the old 'Recovery Set' could be used. Then there is the Revell RAF Pilots And Ground Crew set, which I understand can be hard to find. That had some great figures, in hard styrene, with separate arms, torsos, legs and heads, so you could really vary the figures. I have also, in the past, used the hard styrene figures from DAPOL - the workmen and passenger sets, swapping heads with some of the seated passenger figures, to give them 'Battle Bowlers', to use as drivers in softskin vehicles.

    my days of 1/72 are sadly over, still have a few past aircraft and helicopter builds suspended in the workshop though. mainly WW2 carrier types.. But my appreciation will never wane for those who can and do.!! So, i am really looking forward to these "mini" diorama's and the magic you dust each one with... ATVB2U Scott Somerset

      Thank you Scott. I was never really interested in 1:72, except for large subjects like the Lancaster. But now, having just this kit and a 1:72 Nashorn (video soon), I must say I've really enjoyed it. I suspect part of it is also that my new place is much smaller than my old one, so 1:72 is very useful in that regard :)

    Geckos new 1.35 scale Bedfords are amazingly nice! First time I've seen a kit done without injecting pin marks! Think they have slide Moulded the whole kit honestly there's not 1 injecting pin hole on the new Bedfords! The areo screen one's the nicest because cab do it in Africa marking and counter! Mines come out lovely! They also have a water truck like this that's my next one to do!

    Nice kit ! Looking forward too you painting the vehicles and bombs . Agree its a shame airfix don't include a few figures which would enhance a diorama , yet they do in the RAF recovery set .
    Regards nick

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the recovery set looks interesting. I've seen it in HO (1:76) and 1:72 boxings, but I'm not clear if Airfix have scaled up the molds or just said "pah, it's close enough" and change the label.

    • @bionicgeekgrrl
      @bionicgeekgrrl ปีที่แล้ว

      Iirc they labelled it ho/oo at one point so unless it has been upgraded since, it is likely to be 1:76 scale, though it could be 1:87 too! (Ho/oo being a common label in the 90s and earlier as they share the same gauge track for model railway, but are 3.5mm and 4mm to the foot respectively).
      However, if your diorama is big enough and you put the vehicles at the back no one is likely to notice and you may get a bit of perspective.

  • @EMTBAFV
    @EMTBAFV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Zvezda are really the ones for 1.72nd figures now as not much call for them in that scale.
    And honestly never noticed the difference with the lighting it was good all way through watching on my TV! I've got one them lights myself so I do know what you mean compared to my other led ones from ebay you don't get that black spot!

    This is a nice set, of course I was put off by the background noise.....which is non existant; so no worries there. I was thinking about getting this kit myself for a battle of Britain scene?? Anyway good build nice models worth considering 🤔.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Guy. For a Battle of Britain scene I'm not sure how well this set would work - it's more bomber oriented than fighter oriented. I think Airfix do a Battle of Britain set featuring appropriate ground vehicles though.

  • @kevinhale9400
    @kevinhale9400 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Why don’t Airfix issue vehicle kits featuring these trucks as they did in the Bedford QLD/QLT packs. We would then have a larger range of transport vehicles for the ground forces and we would also have a greater range of vehicles available for conversions to other vehicles that were used in the war, unless Airfix wants to issue a series of these vehicles themselves. Airfix magazine had a wonderful series of conversion articles which gave modellers endless hours of fun and building skill.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, that would be cool

  • @bionicgeekgrrl
    @bionicgeekgrrl ปีที่แล้ว

    A nice little set,along with that usaaf one. One interesting thing is colours. I had the recovery set many years ago and it was blue, i didn't think the raf stuff got green in the war, though I have been out of the loop for ages now. Perhaps airfix got confused with a naval air station for the blue? Another couple of kits that would compliment this is the aec matador as they were seemingly everywhere and there was a separate ambulance i thi.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there has been a lot of progress with research into camo colours in recent years. I believe (but could easily be wrong) that RAF blue schemes were used post war rather than during WW2. You're right about the other Airfix kits - that rescue ones would be a great candidate for a Vintage Classics release or, even better, a new tool.

    • @bionicgeekgrrl
      @bionicgeekgrrl ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ModelNerd I suspect you're right about the colours, those cheap kits back then were more concerned with being cheap and relatively easy to build rather than completely accurate, though some of them were, though often basic compared to what we'd accept today.
      The Matador and gun trailer are in the classics range I believe already. I don't think the control tower or rescue set has reappeared yet, I agree both getting a new tooling would be nice, I remember them fondly from about 30 years ago. So much more available today than there ever was!
      the problem is more where to put them when done these days though, which does somewhat atm, put me off getting back into building aircraft kits again for the time being, though the small fighters in 1/72 are probably about right size wise for my current constraints, though I always preferred 1:48 back then.

    Nice kit and as others have commented it is a shame they didn't include figures to really bring it to life. I have the 1/72 "Dora" railgun kit in my stash and have searched everywhere for a crew to go with it.

      @@ModelNerd It will certainly make for an impressive display. The plan is to mount it on a board with some scenery. I have two locomotives to build as well to go with it. I just wish I could find a crew to man the gun.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi James. It depends on the subject. In general I prefer 1:35 for military vehicles and 1:48 for aircraft. However, for large bombers like the Lancaster that this set will go with, 1:48 is too big really (and more expensive).

    i think airfix have got it wrong, that bedford mw is too small to fill up a lancaster, i am sure a Bedford ql 4x4 tanker or an AEC 6x6 tanker used to do this job.pity Guy Gibson is not around to find out, years ago airfix used to do a refueling set with an AEC in it

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm honestly not sure mate. The standalone bowser is marked as 450 gallons, and the Bedford is obviously smaller than that. Could they be for water or oil rather than fuel maybe?
